When Hermione turned around after shutting her bedroom door, Ginny was smirking at her with an amused look on her face.
"What?" Hermione asked innocently.
"You were totally trying to get a reaction out of Malfoy."
"I was not," Hermione said smirking.
Ginny pushed her playfully. "Yeah, okay Hermione."
"Well, whatever. I can have a little fun if I want to, no?"
"Hey, I never said anything against it. I actually found it rather amusing. And I also noticed he never once referred to you as a Mudblood. He addressed you by your last name only."
Hermione shrugged.
"He's totally into you," Ginny stated.
"You can never be sure with him. He is too good at masking what he is feeling."
"Trust me on this one."
"I guess we'll see."
"For the smartest witch at this school, you have no idea how to read people."
"I do too!"
Ginny laughed rolling her eyes.
"Can I paint your nails?" Ginny asked.
"Ginny, you know I don't have anything like that here.."
Ginny walked over to Hermione's window opened it and pointed her wand out the window saying, "Accio nail polish."
Before Hermione could say anything, Ginny moved away from the window and used her wand to direct the bottles of nail polish that were now flying through the window to land on Hermione's desk.
"Now, what were you saying about not having anything here?" Ginny asked triumphantly.
Hermione rolled her eyes smiling at her friend.
"And you are not choosing the colour either. Last time I listened to you and painted your nails the colour you wanted, so this time I'm choosing the colours."
Hermione went to protest but Ginny held up her hand, cutting her off.
"Ugh, fine."
Ginny smiled and grabbed a bottle of nail polish and sat on Hermione's bed, patting the place beside her.
Hermione sat down obediently, holding out her hands for Ginny to start her attack.
Ginny didn't allow Hermione to see what colour she was painting her nails, so Hermione had busied herself with looking around the room.
"Done!"
Hermione looked down at her nails and laughed.
"Really Gin?"
"What?" Ginny asked innocently.
"That's the colour you chose to paint my nails, really?"
"I think the colour suits you," Ginny stated simply.
"And what is the rest of Gryffindor going to think when I show up with my nails painted the colour of our rival house?"
"Tell them to shove it up their ass."
Hermione laughed and shook her head. Of course her friend had chosen to paint her nails emerald green. She should have known better than to let Ginny choose the colour, she always had some form of trick up her sleeve.
"You know Malfoy is probably going to ask why my nails are the colour of his house."
"I doubt he will ask. But if he does, just tell him you like the colour or something.. I wanna be around when he does see the colour of your nails. I wonder what his reaction will be."
"I have no idea.."
Hermione's head snapped to her door as she heard a loud crash come from the common room. She grabbed her wand, and threw her bedroom door open, shielding Ginny behind her.
Hermione knew something was wrong immediately, the room was completely dark.
She felt Ginny come up beside her and Hermione moved to step in front of her when Ginny said, "Hermione, don't. Two is better than one."
Hermione had to agree, and her and Ginny quietly scanned the room, waiting for their eyes to adjust.
Hermione saw a figure running towards the door and she sent a spell flying in that direction. Ginny must had spotted the person at the same moment that she had, because Hermione saw another spell fly past her towards the door.
They watched as light flitted into the sitting room as the door opened, and then they were back in darkness as the door slammed shut.
"Lumos," Both Hermione and Ginny said.
Hermione heard a moan, and she stopped dead in her tracks, Ginny following suit.
Hermione shone her light in the direction that the sound had come from and found Draco laying on the ground, and slash across his forehead.
Without thinking, she ran over to him.
"Draco?" Hermione asked urgently.
Draco let out another moan.
Ginny came up behind her, using her wand to help illuminate Draco's figure.
"Is he okay?" Ginny asked, as her eyes kept scanning the room.
Hermione felt his pulse, and found that is was beating at a normal pace.
"He seems alright, besides this gash on his head."
Hermione used some healing spells to fix the cut on his head.
"Renneverate!"
Draco's eyes shot open, and he sat up quickly.
Hermione grabbed him as he started to fall over.
"Easy," she said softly.
"Granger? What happened?" Draco asked confused.
"We were about to ask you the same thing," Ginny stated, finally looking at him.
Draco's eyes widened as he remembered.
"Someone came into the common room and the lights went off. I raised my wand to hex them, and that's all I remember."
Draco rubbed his head where the gash used to be.
"Your head might be a little tender, I had to heal you. You had a giant cut across your forehead," Hermione stated.
"You must have fallen down and hit your head off of the table or something, because other than that there didn't seem to be anything wrong with you at all.." Ginny said slowly.
"What are you thinking?" Hermione asked looking at her friend.
"I just think this whole situation is odd.. And that something seems off about it."
"What do you mean?" Draco asked.
"I don't know.. I just find it odd that someone is breaking into your guys' dorm after curfew. And that no harm came to you Malfoy besides a cut on your forehead, no offense. I mean, if you're breaking into someone's dorm in the middle of the night you would want to make sure to take out whoever is in your way so there is no victims left, yet here you stand good as new."
"Well clearly I wasn't completely unharmed Weaslette, as I was knocked out," Draco snapped.
"I know that Malfoy, but I mean it's just weird how that's all that happened to you. I don't know. Why would this person risk getting caught by only knocking you out? It doesn't make any sense to me."
"No, Ginny you're right.. The situation is weird."
"Well what I want to know is how this person was able to get into our dorm so easily. Did you tell anyone else the password Granger?"
"Of course I didn't!" Hermione exclaimed.
"Well did your little gossipy friend accidentally let it slip?" Draco asked looking accusingly at Ginny.
"For your information Malfoy, I literally just found out that the two of you were living together tonight, and I didn't have the time to say anything to anyone about it from the walk to the library where I was accompanied with Hermione I might add, back to your dorm here. Nor would I say anything to anyone as I value my friends safety," Ginny stated.
"Malfoy, Ginny didn't say anything," Hermione stated, backing up her friend.
Draco let out a frustrated sigh. "Well then how the hell did the person get in here?"
"I don't know…" Hermione said softly.
"We need to go and talk to Dumbledore," Ginny stated.
"We do not," Draco snapped.
"Malfoy, think logically. This is clearly the same person who has been after Hermione all year, and they now have access to your dorm room. If they are able to break through a door with a password, what is going to keep them from breaking in again and this time actually getting to Hermione? We were lucky this time because you were sitting in the living area and I was here, but what if next time you're not around?"
Draco scowled. "Fine, let's go."
The three of them walked to Dumbledore's office, keeping a eye out for anyone who was lingering around the hallways. Hermione said the password to Dumbledore's office, and knocked on the door.
"Enter."
Dumbledore's eyes widened in surprise when he saw who was at his door, but covered his surprise quickly with a smile at their presence.
"Ms. Granger, Ms. Weasley, Mr. Malfoy, what a pleasant surprise."
"I wouldn't call it pleasant," Draco stated.
"It is always a pleasure to be visited by the students. An old man often gets bored sitting around in his office late at night. Now, what can I do for you three?"
Hermione looked at the other two, and then said, "Someone broke into our dorm."
Dumbledore leaned forward. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know what happened exactly, I was in my room with Ginny and we heard a loud noise and then went to investigate. When I opened my door, the living area was completely dark, and then we saw someone running towards the exit and both Ginny and I sent spells at the man, but he got away. And then we found Malfoy unconscious on the floor."
"Is this true Draco?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yes."
Dumbledore stood up, and walked around the desk so he was standing directly in front of the three students.
"I do not know how he is getting around the security that has been placed around the castle, and I also do not know how he knew that the two of you were sharing a dorm. As to how he entered your dorm without a password, I may have a theory, but I will need to check in order to make sure. Whoever this man is, he knows his way around the school, and is exceptional at concealing himself. He has gotten around the security measures on more than one occasion, and I now fear for the safety of both of you, as well as the rest of my students."
"Since he knows where Hermione is staying, maybe we could have a few more people move into the dorm room, that way that someone is always around?" Ginny asked.
"No way!" Draco exclaimed. "Because I already know you're going to request that your brother and your boyfriend move in, and there is no way that I am sharing a dorm room with two people who want to kill me. I'll take my chances against the intruder."
"Malfoy, are you daft?" Ginny snapped. "Have you not once considered the danger that Hermione is in?"
"Of course I have! Why do you think I have allowed us sharing a dorm to go on as long as it has! And why else do you think I make sure to walk her to classes and what not when one of you isn't around!"
"Mr. Malfoy has done a fine job of keeping his eyes on Ms. Granger, that I have noticed and am thankful for. However, it seems that this is not enough, and I fear that no matter how much protection we offer Ms. Granger, there is always going to be the threat of this person until he is caught."
"So what are we going to do?" Hermione asked.
"Well, since Christmas break is a week away, I believe that the best thing would be to send the students home a week earlier."
"Really?!" Ginny exclaimed, her eyes bright.
"Yes Ms. Weasley. The rest of the Professors and I are going to need to do a complete sweep of the school and try and figure out how this person is getting into the school without detection, and it would be easiest for us to do that without all of the students around."
"Sweet!"
"I will be making the announcement tomorrow morning at breakfast, that way all students can pack their bags and be ready for departure by noon."
"You think sending Granger home to her muggle family that she is going to be safe?"
"Oh, Ms. Granger is not going to be going home."
"I'm not?" Hermione asked.
"Oh no, that would be too dangerous. I want you all to go to the Burrow and spend your holiday there. I am going to be sending an owl to Molly as soon as you all leave. I am sure that she will be fine with this arrangement."
"What do you mean by all?" Draco asked darkly.
"Ah, Draco, I see that you are not so easily fooled. By all, I mean the three of you in this room, along with the rest of the Weasley siblings and Harry."
"ARE YOU CRAZY?! There is no way I am going to spend two weeks at a place where I am going to be more at harm than I am here! There is no way that my father would allow it, just as there is no way that I would be welcomed there in that house!"
"Draco, Molly is a very understanding woman and I am sure that once I express how important it is for you to accompany Ms. Granger to her house in order to ensure her safety, she will not have a problem with the arrangement."
"Yeah? And how are Pothead and Weasel going to feel about the news? Throw a bloody party? I think not."
"I will speak to Harry and Ron and make sure that no harm comes to you."
"Like that is going to stop them!"
"Mr. Malfoy, I am more than confident that you will be able to handle the situation in a professional, mature manner, and that both Harry and Ron will do the same."
Draco snorted. "You're bloody insane."
Dumbledore smiled. "Besides, I am not worried. I am sure that both Ms. Granger and Ms. Weasley will ensure that no harm comes to you."
"Oh great, so now I have to put my life in the hands of these two? I'm going to be dead before we even make the destination."
Ginny laughed.
Draco narrowed his eyes at her.
Ginny tried to cough to cover up her outburst, and Dumbledore watched an amused smile on his face.
"I fully trust that these two will be able to keep both Harry and Ron in line if they must. As long as you do nothing to provoke the two of them, then I am sure that you will all get along nicely."
Draco shook his head. He had always thought that Dumbledore was insane, and this further proved his theory. Him, Harry, and Ron getting along nicely? There is no way in hell that is going to happen. He looked over at Hermione, who was watching him closely. He shot her a glare, and then looked away. It was her fault that he was in this position in the first place.
"And what exactly am I supposed to tell my family? The reason I'm not showing up at the Manor for Christmas break."
"I will send them a letter informing them that it is the responsibility of the Head Boy and Girl to stay at the school in order to make sure that the students who stay at the school over the holidays are looked after."
"I've never not been home for Christmas."
"You're not the only one who is suffering here Malfoy, Hermione can't go home and see her parents either."
"Hmmm. Well, I can make arrangements for you to floo back to the Manor from the Burrow late Christmas Eve if you wish to spend Christmas day with your family."
Draco nodded.
"I'm sorry Ms. Granger, but I cannot do the same for you. I hope that you understand I am not doing this to punish you, but to make sure that you are safe. Sending you home to a muggle neighbourhood under current circumstances would be very unwise."
"No, that's okay I understand," Hermione said smiling.
Dumbledore smiled at her.
"Well then, it is settled. I will send an owl to Molly and make sure that she is prepared for all of your arrivals tomorrow. I will also send an owl to one of the Professors and make sure that they are positioned outside of your form room for the remainder of the night so that nobody will be able to enter."
"Thank you," Hermione stated.
"Were you planning on having Ms. Weasley spend the night?"
"If that is okay with you?"
"A little extra protection couldn't hurt."
"Thanks."
"You are welcome. Now, you three should get to bed, there is lots to do tomorrow!" Dumbledore said clapping his hands together.
The three left, and Hermione and Ginny bid him goodnight before leaving.
"You could be a little nicer to him," Hermione said to Draco as soon as the door to Dumbledore's office shut behind them.
"Be nice to a man who is trying to get me murdered?"
"You know that isn't his intention," Hermione said softly.
"And what exactly does he think is going to happen, sending me to spend two weeks with a family who absolutely despises my very existence, and not to mention the Boy who annoys the fuck out of me."
"Well guess what Malfoy, you're going to have to deal with it," Ginny snapped.
"Guys please, I don't want you two fighting. It's going to be hard enough trying to keep Harry and Ron from picking fights every ten seconds, the least you two can do is get along, or at least pretend to for the sake of this arrangement. If Harry and Ron can see that you're okay with Draco staying at the burrow, then maybe they will lay off."
"You're just as bloody mental as that old git," Draco stated shaking his head.
"Honestly Malfoy, I'm trying my best to try and work out a solution to this whole thing!" Hermione snapped.
Draco let out a deep sigh and ran his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, you're right."
"What I think is going to be interesting is seeing how Harry and Ron act when they realize that the two of you aren't sworn enemies anymore," Ginny stated suddenly.
Draco's head snapped over in her direction, and then at Hermione, who was refusing to look at him.
"What?" Ginny asked innocently.
"Who said we weren't enemies?" Draco questioned slowly.
"Oh come on, are you seriously asking me that? I already knew something was up between the two of you before I got it out of Hermione."
"Ginny!" Hermione squeaked.
"Granger," Draco started darkly.
"Don't blame her Malfoy. You guys weren't exactly inconspicuous about it. I caught you guys looking at each other over breakfast. Anyone could have noticed. Thankfully, no one really pays much attention to things like I do."
"Well this is fan-bloody-tastic!" Draco snapped.
"I'm not going to say anything to Harry or Ron, if that's what you're worried about. What is happening between the two of you is none of my business."
"How honourable of you," Draco stated.
"I may not understand why Hermione is into you, or why she is deciding to give you the time of day, because frankly I think you're a complete arse. Hermione is a smart girl, and if she sees something in you then I trust and respect her decision. I will get along with you for her sake, and will do what I can to keep Harry and Ron under control, but if you do something to hurt her, then I will be right beside Harry and Ron when it comes to kicking your Pureblood ass."
"You know what, we might get along, you and I," Draco said smirking.
Ginny looked over at Hermione, who was looking at the two of them in awe, a smile on her face. Ginny sent Hermione a smile.
"Thank you," Hermione mouthed at her.
"You're welcome," Ginny mouthed back.
They were almost back to the dorm when Draco said, "Granger, why are your nails green?"
Ginny burst out laughing.
