“You look very nice, Harry,” Remus told the young man as he sat at the table, smiling. Harry was dressed in some of his new clothes, the jeans, boots and one of the nice shirts. He laid the dragon-hide jacket Sirius got him down on the bench beside him as he sat down.
Taking his breakfast, Harry gave a bit of a sheepish grin then said, “Thanks.”After taking a couple of bracing sips of his coffee, Sirius said, poking at his food, “The jacket might look a bit out of place, what with it being summer and all, but I thought it best for him to wear it because of the spells on it. Besides, he won't get hot as it has built-in cooling charms for the summer.”“Good idea,” Snape nodded as he sipped at his own coffee.“Alright, what's the plan for this trip?” Sirius asked after taking a few bites of his food.“When Harry's done eating, we're going to head to the Alley. Molly and the brood are going to meet us there in about an hour or so. We're going to take Harry to Gringotts to get what he needs and wait out front while Molly gets their money. After that, we get what's needed then come home. It shouldn't be too horribly bad.”“We've decided that I'm the one that's going to stick closest to Harry while Lupin keeps an eye out for shenanigans from three of them,” Snape explained, looking between the two. “If there's an issue, Remus will take Harry elsewhere and I'll handle it.”“It was our thought that the mere threat of Severus stepping in should be enough to curb tendencies,” Remus told them with a small smile.“It should,” Sirius grinned, chuckling a little. “Hopefully the three of them will back off and get a clue. If not, it should be memorable to see what you say to them.”“If they dance even close, I'm going to let them have it,” Severus said truthfully. “Molly and Arthur talked to them. That should have been more than enough to stifle anything. If it's not, I have no problem driving the point home another way. One way or another, they're going to learn the lesson to not be nosy and that certain things needs left alone.”“Whatever Mr. and Mrs. Weasley said to them won't be enough to back Ron and Hermione off,” Harry snorted as he ate. “Those two feel they have a right to know what I'm doing and the why behind it. Being lectured by someone isn't going to put them off. They'll just be more covert about it is all.”“If it takes more than once or Black and I teaming up to do it, we will,” Severus told him firmly, though he knew Harry was right about that. He had dealt with the two before enough times to know what they were like. “I don't care. They're about to learn that there are certain areas that are not within their purview to know. It matters not what it takes to make them learn the lesson.”“I say if it takes more than one lecture on the topic then we take it up with Molly and Arthur to ensure that they aren't allowed around Harry,” Remus said looking around. “They've been talked to by the two of them and if we have to do it as well, it's proving that they aren't listening, thus they don't deserve any more chances to prove they can.”Nodding slowly, Severus said, “Agreed. Let's see how today goes and we'll decide from there.”“Works for me because if they keep it up, I'm taking a shot at them,” Sirius said bluntly. “And I won't be nice about it. Then I'm going to make it very clear they aren't allowed in this house ever again.”“We'll see how this trip goes and judge from there what needs done,” Severus said with a nod. “However, I do agree with Harry in that I don't think they'll stop. Not until we finally do something that drives the point home that everyone is done with them.”Nodding to that, Remus changed the subject, “Do we have the list of everything we need? We had some off things to get for other areas and I want to be sure that we have it all written down so we don't forget something.”Producing the list, Severus handed it over so Lupin could double-check it.
Standing outside Gringotts while Harry and Severus were getting the money, Remus was waiting for Molly and the rest of the brood. Seeing her bustle up finally, trying to keep track of her gaggle with the help of Bill, he was relieved. When she stepped up to him, he said, “Go get what you need. Harry's in there with Severus. They should be out shortly. We'll wait for you here.”
Pleased that she didn't have to do both vaults with everyone along, Molly nodded. “We'll do that.”“We'll stay out here, mum,” George said.“And wait so you don't have to worry about us,” Fred continued.“And we promise--” George started“We won't move from this spot,” Fred assured her, taking the spot by Remus on one side while his brother took the one on the other.Chuckling, Remus said, “I'll keep an eye on them. Severus and Harry shouldn't be long, so we'll be fine.”“Alright,” Molly nodded. Glaring at the two, she warned, pointing between them, “Stay put and don't cause problems!”“We won't, mum,” both assured her at the same time.Waiting until she hustled the rest into Gringotts, Fred said, voice lowered, “Actually, we needed to talk to you alone.”“There's something we thought you should know,” George continued.“While, normally, we wouldn't say anything,” Fred pressed on.“What with how we like mayhem and causing it,” George added.“This is something we thought you should know ahead of time,” Fred told him seriously then imparted what they overheard from the conversation with Ron, Ginny and Hermione. In a hushed tone, looking around, Fred told Remus, “Look, this is personal, we get that.”“So it needs left alone,” George added with a firm nod.Taking that in and sighing, Remus nodded, “I'm glad you mentioned something. Thank you. Severus and I will handle it if they step close to the line of mentioning any of it. We'll also keep our eyes and ears peeled for anything even going in that direction.”“Harry's a good bloke,” George sighed.“If he has problems, he doesn't need those three nosing about them,” Fred finished.“He doesn't and he'll appreciate this,” Remus assured them.“Now that us being stool pigeons is out of the way,” Fred started.“We have a couple of questions about your nickname,” George finished.Chuckling at that and smiling, Remus waited, having known this was coming.
Standing in Flourish and Blotts, Harry was looking through some books of the same genre Remus had given him for his birthday. He had already started one and liked it, so he thought he might enjoy some more of them. Severus was gathering his books for the term and talking to the clerk about ordering a couple of others for himself in a topic he needed for research. As everyone else was off getting fitted for new robes, they were pretty much alone so Severus didn't have to stick as close to him as he had before. Plus, he could relax slightly.
So far, the trip had been stressful. As promised, Remus and Severus were sticking close. So were Fred and George, joking around with him. That he didn't mind, honestly. He liked the twins and they weren't apt to delve into areas with him that he didn't want to talk about. However, Ron and Hermione were trying their damnedest to get him alone. So far, he had avoided that and Severus had been there giving one of his glares when they did, something that backed them off, but he knew that wasn't the end of it and they wouldn't give up. Which meant he had to stay on his toes for anything they might try. As the trip was almost over, thankfully, so he didn't have much longer to put up with it.Sliding down a little after putting the book back he had looked at, deciding he wasn't interested, he glanced up to see where Severus was. The deal was he was supposed to stay in the line of sight at all times to Severus, something he agreed to easily, and he could look all he wanted. He wanted to make sure he did. Seeing the Potions Master look at him, he gave a short wave to make sure the man saw him and pulled another book out to read the blurb in it after Severus gave him a short nod. However, neither of them saw Hermione and Ron slide up from the opposite direction.Keeping an eye out where Snape was, Hermione slipped closer to Harry, motioning Ron to follow. Molly was busy with Ginny, so she had let them come to the bookstore and would meet them here. It was perfect. Fred and George were busy elsewhere. Professor Lupin was grabbing something in the store next door and Professor Snape was busy at the counter. This was good. Making sure she kept her voice down, she slipped up by Harry with Ron right behind her. Quietly, she said, “Harry, we just want to talk to you.”Stiffening up when he heard Hermione's voice, Harry snarled, not looking at her but glancing towards Severus, hoping to get his attention. “Get lost, Hermione. I don't want to talk to either you or Ron.” Putting the book back on the shelf, he fully planned to go stand by Severus so he didn't have to deal with the two.Putting a hand on Harry's arm to keep him from walking off, Hermione told him, “We just want to say we're sorry about not writing and that. I mean, we get why you're angry, but Professor Dumbledore only has your best interests at heart, Harry. You need to understand that! We understand he made some mistakes with you and something really awful happened with the Dursleys, but you can't keep blaming him, or us, for that! We all make mistakes, Harry. That's what this was. If you would just talk to us and explain what's going on, we'll understand better then we can help. I mean, I’ve figured part of it out and it's not nice. Just sit down with us and talk. I'm sure you'll feel better if you do that.”That was all Harry could take. Rounding on her, he snarled, not bothering to keep his voice down, “You have no idea what's going on, Hermione. And it's none of your business! It's personal. You were told that! I don't need to talk to you about it and nothing you'll say will change my mind. As for Dumbledore? Don't even go there with me.” That's all he got out of his mouth when Severus was right by his side.Having heard what was said, Severus immediately left the counter and strode over towards Harry, thunderous look on his face. Seeing Remus come in from getting what they needed next door, he motioned the man to follow. Putting a hand on Harry's shoulder, he gave it a squeeze then glowered at the two standing there, liking how they went pale. Keeping his voice level as Lupin joined them, looking plenty upset himself, he said, “Harry, go on with Lupin. I'll pay for the books when I'm done here and meet you down by the Owl Emporium. You can grab the owl treats you need.” Seeing the young man nod, though glaring in the direction of his two former friends, Harry then went over to Lupin.Staring, hard, at the two students, an angry look on his face, Remus put a hand on Harry's back and moved him towards the door. “Come on, we'll get treats for Hedwig.”Waiting until he heard the bell over the door as the signal that the two left, Severus folded his arms over his chest and glared at them. “I do believe Molly and Arthur, both, told you that Harry didn't want anything to do with you and you were not to broach certain subjects with him, did they not?”Going pale, looking at Ron, who was white, Hermione began to wring her hands, “Well, yes, but--” then she was cut off.“There is no 'but' in this, Miss Granger,” Severus snarled, face taking on a thunderous look. “You were told not to, plainly, and to leave certain topics alone. It appears that, for all your intelligence, you don't have enough to understand the most basic of instructions. I would suggest that next time you read up on a topic, you pick one about how you should listen when you're told something specifically and how certain areas aren't your business to delve into! Then how doing such things with someone that doesn't want to talk about it will only result in a backlash against you.”Stepping closer to the duo, pleased with how pale they were and how they were shaking, he hissed, “Harry wants nothing to do with you, either of you. He's made that about as clear as he can without drawing pictures to spell it out. What is going on is none of your business. He has the right to keep whatever he feels like from you and it's not within your rights to demand he tell you! Whatever is going on isn't your business either. If Harry wants you to know then he will tell you. He doesn't want you to and has said that plainly. I would suggest that you keep your know-it-all nosy self out of it if you don't want to make things worse than they already are for yourself! You and Mr. Weasley are doing nothing but making an already bad situation all the worse by demanding answers! And trying to change his mind when he feels angry at Albus, and rightfully so, won’t help matters at all!” Hearing the bell over the door tinkle and Molly talking, he snapped, “I will be taking this up with Molly and Arthur when I'm done with both of you. I am also going to tell you, bluntly, that this is your last chance on the matter. One hint of trying a foolish stunt like this again with Harry or if any of us find out you're trying to wiggle around to figure out what's going on, then passing such information to others and you'll be dealing with Black and myself, both, on the matter.”Eyes filling with tears, wringing her hands, Hermione said, softly, “We're only trying to help.”Pale as a ghost, Ron added, “Harry's our friend. We just want to help him.”“He does not want or need your help!” Severus thundered, glaring at the two. “He's made that clear. Molly and Arthur have made that clear. And now I am! That should be more than enough to tell you to stop this! And what is going on isn't your business either! You were told that plainly!”Seeing what was going on with Hermione and Ron, Molly's eyes widened. Looking at Bill, who was also wide-eyed, she grabbed her oldest by the sleeve and tugged him to follow, hurrying Ginny along with them. Getting to where the three were, she asked, glancing between the two teen's pale faces and Severus' thunderous one, “What's going on?”“These two took it upon themselves to try to get out of Harry what is going on and to tell him that he shouldn't keep blaming Albus for this mess. It appears that your talk with them didn't work and they continue to poke at the situation to try to figure it out.”Face reddening, Molly looked at the two, folding her arms over her chest. “I'll deal with both of you when we get home,” she told them, tone lethal. Looking at Severus, she said, “I'm sorry. They wanted to come here while Ginny was being fitted for her robes. I should have known they were up to something.”“You should have,” Severus told her, still glowering at the two. “I believe, as we're done with what we need, I'll grab the books then meet Lupin and Harry at the Owl Emporium. We'll be taking our leave after that.” Voice a low snarl, he said to the two before him, “Leave the situation alone! It's not any of your business! If we wanted you to know what was going on, we would tell you. We haven't and have told you it's not. Take heed; this is your final warning on the matter!” With that, he turned on his heel and stormed over to the counter. Paying for what was there, he then exited the shop in a swirl of dark robes.Hearing the door slam behind the man, Molly continued to glare at the two. Stiffening up, she said, “We'll talk about this when we get home. Let's finish with what we need to get. After another sharp look at the two, she turned to go gather the books they needed for term.
Holding Harry, who was sipping at a milkshake they picked up from Fortescue's before coming home, Sirius listened to Snape tell them about what he said to Hermione and Ron. Shaking his head when the man was finished, he sighed, “You had at them. One more shot is all they have. Next time you and I, both, deal with them then they are banned from the house. I want that made crystal clear to Molly and Arthur. The rest of the brood will be allowed over here, but not those two.”
“I'll go talk to them tomorrow,” Remus said with a firm nod. “And I'll make it as clear as I can. I'm sure Molly had plenty to say when she got them home and Arthur will have more when he's told about it.”“You might want to include Ginny in that as well,” Harry suggested. “She might not have been involved this time, but you can bet if she's allowed around that she's going to pass on anything she hears to them and be involved in whatever they're trying to figure out. Though she's quiet about it, she's no better than either of them.”“He's correct,” Severus nodded, looking around. “There's no sense in banning the two of them when they'll just use her to spy. I can assure you she's no better in what she does.”“I'll make that clear too,” Remus told him firmly. Shaking his head, he sighed, “I had hoped that they wouldn't, but figured they'd try. We should have stuck closer to Harry.”“No, Molly should have kept those two on a leash,” Severus snarled, taking a sip of his coffee. “We counted on her to do that and she didn't. Even the most foolish and naïve of people would know what those two were up to when they asked to go to the bookstore alone. Especially knowing we were in there. I blame her for that part. Harry is allowed to browse through books on his own, especially when I'm close at hand, without being harassed and bombarded. They should know that, as should Molly.”Shaking his head, Sirius held Harry close. “I vote no more forays with them. The twins are fine to go with or Bill and Charlie, but not the rest. Molly just proved that we can't count on her to keep them away and the other two—that speaks for itself. From now on, whatever we need to do, we don't involve them.”“I agree,” Severus told him firmly. “If we have to go somewhere or need to do something, we can easily do it ourselves with, maybe, a couple of people from the Order. Most I say we handle ourselves.”Sighing and shaking his head, Remus silently agreed but said nothing, changing the topic, “What did you accomplish while we were away, Sirius? You said something about the house?”“I went and double-checked around. The elves have plenty done other than what's dangerous. So, come Monday when then twins come over, we can delve into the worst. To keep ourselves busy, we can do some of the smaller rooms ourselves before they get here. Even with so much of it left, everything looks much better. They also made me up a list of what they did, what they found where and what pests are about. I took care of a boggart while you were gone and a couple of other minor pests. I've decided to have them press on to working on the second floor and making the rooms livable. They're going to avoid the one with the painting of Phineas, of course, so we'll have to do that one ourselves, but they should be able to clean out a lot of the obviously damaged crap and repair or replace it.” Looking at Snape, he said, “We're going to need a shite load more doxy-cide than what you gave us. We might, maybe, have enough for two of the rooms down here. From my calculations, almost everything other than the rooms we're using, are infested with them.”“I have plenty more at the house,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “I'll bring it over Monday and make sure I prepare some more.”“I also checked downstairs and the Potions lab. You might want to take a look at it before you go to see if we need anything else but ingredients. They have that all cleaned out and I made sure it was set up right.”“I'll tend to that before I go,” Severus told him. Looking around, he said, “I'm hearing rumblings of a big meeting next week sometime. We may need to prepare for that. Other than that—we're in the clear I think, other than what we know, like the hearing. I think, from what Albus said to me last night when I talked to him, most are going to stay away unless they have specific business here. They want to give Harry some space to settle.”“You get anything out of him?” Sirius asked, knowing he had talked to the man for a while the night before.“Nothing we can use,” Severus snorted, looking dour. “He's upset that his present was returned and was asking how he can get back into Harry's good graces. I bluntly told him I didn't think he could, but gave the advice to give it some time. It won't work, that I know, but it may hold off more overt attempts for awhile. Other than that, I got nothing but his normal ramblings about needing Harry for this. However, the one thing that did come up was he said he would push Arthur and Molly to see what they can do with Harry.” Smirking, he added, an amused expression on his face, “Arthur chewed on him from what he said. He was rather off-kilter about that! And not at all pleased.”“Good,” Sirius grinned. Shaking his head, he said, “We'll work with that end as it presents itself. Let's see what he plans for this and go from there. And we can hope that he takes your advice and stays away.” Seeing nods, he sighed then said, “Let's get some lunch then see what we can find to clean. At least an easy room. Then we'll work on that.” Seeing nods, he called for the elves to bring them lunch.
