Hermione looked over at Ginny and saw that she was fast asleep. She let out a deep, frustrated sigh. She already knew that she was getting no sleep tonight, and for good reason. Regardless of what she said to Draco, she was worried about what was going to happen with Harry, Ron, Draco, Ginny and herself under the same roof, and for two weeks! She knew that Ginny wasn't going to be a problem, as Ginny had already made it clear to Draco that she was okay with whatever was going on between the two of them. Harry and Ron however, were not going to be so understanding, Ron especially. Hermione knew that Ron wouldn't be happy regardless of who she was with, but having feelings for someone that both of her best friends hated more than anything, she knew she was in for some supreme shit.
Although her and Draco weren't exactly official, they had some form of relationship shared between them. Yes, she liked him, and if she was being honest with herself she could say that she loved him. Would she ever tell Draco that? Probably not, because she knew that once those words slipped out of her mouth, any form of relationship between the two of them would be done for good.
Even though Ginny was confident that Draco had feelings for her also, Hermione knew that if she expressed how deep her feelings for him ran, he himself would run away. Draco was not a person who was comfortable with feelings, that much Hermione knew. Although she didn't know Draco's entire life story, she knew that he grew up with a rough childhood, one that was pretty much void of any type of love. From what Hermione could tell from the brief meetings that they had shared, Draco's father felt no affection towards his son whatsoever. She didn't understand how a father could treat his son that way.
Hermione sat up, being careful not to stir Ginny, and slipped out of bed. She quietly made her way across her room, and opened the door. She shut the door quietly behind her, and headed towards the kitchenette that her and Draco shared. She never understood why a kitchenette was supplied to them, but she was currently thankful for it, as she was hoping a hot mug of tea would sooth her nerves.
"Can't sleep either?"
Hermione jumped, and almost dropped the mug from her hands.
"Malfoy!"
"My bad. I thought you saw me sitting here when you came out of your room."
Hermione took a few deep breaths, calming her racing heart.
"Well I didn't."
"What are you making?" Draco asked.
"Tea. Do you want some?"
"Sure."
Hermione grabbed a second mug, and placed a tea bag in each. She grabbed a kettle from one of the cupboards, filled it up with water, plugged it in and waited for water to heat up.
"Why are you doing it the muggle way?" Draco questioned.
"Huh?"
"We have wands for a reason Granger," Draco stated.
"Oh. I don't know. Habit I guess. I always make tea this way."
"It's so.. inconvenient."
Hermione laughed at him over her shoulder.
"And it's so time consuming. I do not know how muggle's survive without the use of magic. I mean seriously."
"Well, it's not like they know about magic so they aren't really missing out on anything. Besides, technology has greatly advanced in order to speed things up and make things easier and more convenient."
"If you say so."
"Well obviously you wouldn't understand, you've grown up with magic around you your whole life so you wouldn't know any differently. Me, coming from a muggle family, understands and appreciates just how many things have been invented or created in order to help people get things done."
The kettle started whistling, and Hermione poured hot water in to each of their mugs.
"How do you like your tea?"
"One milk, two sugar."
Hermione nodded, and made both of their teas, and then made her way over to the couches, where Draco was currently residing. She handed him his mug and then took a tentative sip out of her own drink.
Draco watched as Hermione sighed contently after taking a deep drink from her tea, and smirked at the flush that appeared on her cheeks.
"I love tea," Hermione said turning to him.
"I can see that," Draco said smirking.
"What? It's so calming."
Draco shrugged.
"Why are you still up?" Hermione asked.
"Couldn't sleep. Why are you still up?"
"For the same reason."
"Well, what's bothering you Granger?"
"I guess I'm just overwhelmed with everything that's happening," Hermione said truthfully, but also keeping some of her thoughts hidden.
"Well, you have nothing to worry about."
"What makes you say that?" Hermione asked.
"Dumbledore is doing everything he can in order to ensure your safety."
"I know that, but I hate how it's of an inconvenience to everyone else."
"I'm sure everyone is going to be ecstatic that we have an extra week added on to the Christmas break."
"And how do you feel about that?" Hermione asked looking at him.
"Indifferent."
"So you're telling me it's not bothering you that you have to spend the next two weeks with me and everyone at the Burrow?"
"Obviously it's bothering me Granger, but there's not really anything I can do about it now is there?"
"Do you want me to go and talk to Dumbledore?"
"And say what? He's made it pretty clear that I can't get out of this arrangement."
"I don't know!" Hermione exclaimed.
"Is that's what's really bothering you, me ruining your holiday?" Draco asked slowly.
"What? No." Hermione said confused.
"Well then why would you offer to go and talk to Dumbledore and try and get me out of having to go with you? Do you not want me around or something?"
"What? I never said that!"
"Am I not good enough to come and hang out with you and your friends over the holidays?" Draco asked angrily.
"Draco, what are you talking about?!"
"Or is it because you were looking to rekindle your relationship with Weasley and now I'm getting in the way of it? Because if that's the case then don't let me interrupt," Draco said standing up and stalking off.
"Draco stop!" Hermione snapped.
Draco stopped walking and turned to look at her.
"What Granger?"
Hermione stood up and walked angrily towards him.
"You want to know what's bothering me Malfoy? I'm worried about what is going to happen with all of us under the same roof. It's no secret that Harry and Ron hate you, and it's going to be a shit show when they realize that I no longer share those feelings! I'm worried that I'm going to lose my best friends because I've been keeping secrets from them about pretty much everything this year! Not only that, but they're probably never going to forgive me when they realize that not only do I not hate you, but that I have strong feelings for you that even I can't explain! It has nothing to do with wanting to get back together with Ron, because there is no way in hell that that is going to happen when I've given my heart to someone else!"
Hermione's eyes widened when she realized what she had just said. She clapped her hand to her mouth and turned around and ran back to her room, shutting her door behind her.
Draco stood rooted to the spot, replaying everything she had just said. "It has nothing to do with wanting to get back together with Ron, because there is no way in hell that that is going to happen when I've given my heart to someone else!"
He wanted to storm to her room and ask her what she meant, but he knew that the youngest Weasley was in Hermione's room, more than likely asleep, and he did not want to have the conversation in front of her. Draco's mind was racing. And how did he feel about the whole thing? He honestly did not know. His heart had stopped the minute those words had left her mouth, and then before he even had time to say something or ask her about it, she had disappeared. There was no way he was going to be able to ask her what she meant, because for the next two weeks, they were going to be continuously surrounded. Not only that, but Draco knew that Harry and Ron would most likely do everything they could to make sure him and Hermione kept their distance from him, even without knowing what she had just said to him.
Draco ran his hand through his hair in frustration. Why was he being put through all of this confusion? Life had been so much simpler when him and Hermione had been enemies. It just made sense, and there was no questioning anything. If him and Hermione still hated one another, then he never would have been required to go to the Burrow, whatever the hell that was, and have to spend time with a house full of people who hated his guts. If Dumbledore had chosen somebody else as Head Boy, then he would never have been in this position. But, Draco would have been pissed if Dumbledore had chosen someone else, as he felt he deserved the position, and had loved the look on Harry and Ron's face when they had realized whom the Head Boy was.
Well, tomorrow was going to prove interesting that's for sure. Harry and Ron were being informed of his joining them over the holidays, and that they were to play nice. HA. Like that was going to happen. If anything, they were going to treat him even worse because they were being told to pretty much accept his company, like that would ever happen. At least the Weaselette was okay with him. That gave him some comfort at least, especially considering he was going to be spending two weeks with her family. Maybe if they saw her being nice to him, it would rub off and they would treat him nicely too? Who was he kidding.. he was doomed.
Draco let out a deep breath. Well regardless, he was stuck going to spend the holidays with people who wanted him dead, and there was nothing he could do about it. There was no point staying up and thinking about it, he needed to try and get some sleep, because he knew that sleep would be hard to come by once he was under the same roof as Harry and Ron. They were probably going to try and murder him in his sleep.. oh goody.
Draco fell asleep, a scowl on his face.
He awoke to the sound of the shower running, and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. He looked at the clock; he had an hour until breakfast. He stretched his limbs, loving the feeling of his muscles coming alive. He grabbed a towel off the back of his door, and went and sat in the living room, waiting for the bathroom.
Hermione stepped out five minutes later, the scent of vanilla engulfing him as the door opened. When she looked at him she sent him a quick smile, and then hurried to her room.
Draco rolled his eyes.
He headed to the bathroom, closed the door behind him, and turned on the shower. He stayed under the warm water as long as he could, not wanting to face the day that he knew as ahead of him. Knowing he couldn't waste any more time, he turned off the shower and went back to his room, dressing quickly. When he left his room, Hermione and Ginny were already in the living room.
"Took you long enough," Ginny stated.
"It takes time to look this good," Draco stated cockily.
Ginny rolled her eyes and stood up, heading to the door.
Draco looked over at Hermione, but she was already following Ginny out of the portrait hole.
He kept a few paces behind them, trying to keep as much of his reputation as was possible. He still got a few odd looks here and there from passerby's, but he ignored the looks and acted indifferent.
Hermione and Ginny took off towards the Gryffindor table as soon as they entered the Great Hall, and Draco headed in the opposite direction towards his own table.
Draco took his seat beside Blaise, and saw that Theo was already sitting across from him.
"Morning beautiful," Theo said smirking.
"Shove off Nott."
"Always so lovely in the mornings," Theo stated.
"Having to look at your ugly face every day, can you blame me?"
"If I didn't know how extremely good looking I am, I might have taken offence to that."
"You're an idiot."
"Yet, you still talk to me."
Draco looked over at Blaise and said, "Why do we talk to him?"
"You tell me mate."
"I can tell you both why, because you love me."
"Will you cover for me if I stab him with my fork?" Draco asked Blaise.
"You bet I will."
"Must you be so morbid at such an early hour?" Theo asked.
"Must you be so annoying at such an early hour?" Draco asked.
"Touché."
"So rumour has it that Dumbledore has an announcement to make this morning," Blaise stated.
"How the hell do you know that?" Draco asked.
"People talk. Why, do you know what it is?"
"Of course I do," Draco stated.
"Well, are you going to tell us or what?" Blaise questioned.
"Nope."
"Git," Theo stated.
"Love you too."
The food appeared in front of them, and Draco loaded up his plate. He didn't know what kind of food he was going to be served while staying at the Burrow, so he was planning on stuffing himself with as much food as possible.
"Hungry?" Blaise asked looking at his plate.
"You could say that."
Blaise quirked an eyebrow, but said nothing.
"So are you going to tell us what the hell this announcement is about or what?" Theo asked.
"If you wait like five minutes you'll find out."
"You really are a git sometimes," Theo stated.
"And had the situation been reversed, you would be doing the exact same thing."
Theo smirked. "True."
After everyone stuffed their remaining food in their mouth, Dumbledore stood up drawing attention to himself.
"Good morning! As you all know, Christmas break is around the corner!"
All the students started shouting and applauding enthusiastically.
"Yes, yes, I know you are all very excited. I have some news that I think will make you even more excited."
The Great Hall went silent.
"I have decided that due to some circumstances that need to be looked into, your Christmas break will be extended, and will be starting tomorrow."
Shouts of enthusiasm and applauding filled the Great Hall.
"Now, I have already sent out a letter to all of your parents explaining the situation, and they will all be expecting you. For those students who were wishing to stay at Hogwarts for the Christmas break, you are still more than welcome to do so. If you decide to go home instead, please let your head of house know so we can keep track of who is staying and going. So everyone who is heading home for the holidays, please go and pack your bags, your transportation will be here at noon. Can I please have Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, and Draco Malfoy come to the front. The rest of you are excused."
Draco let out a deep breath, anticipating what was to come.
"What's going on mate, why does the Headmaster want to talk to you?" Theo asked.
"Probably in regards to Head Duties."
"Oh, well good luck! I still can't believe we have a two-week break! This is awesome!" Theo exclaimed as he stood up and made his way out of the Great Hall.
"Yeah, awesome.." Draco stated.
"So why does he actually want to talk to you?" Blaise asked.
"He doesn't actually want to talk to me. I've already been talked to. He wants to talk to Pothead and Weasel in regards about something to do with me."
"What's going on?" Blaise asked.
Draco lowered his voice, ensuring that no one could hear what he was saying.
"That person who's been after the Head Girl ended up breaking into our dorm last night."
"How is that possible?"
"We don't know, that's why the Headmaster has called Christmas break a week earlier, he wants to figure out how this person is getting in and out of the school undetected."
"What does that have to do with Dumbledore talking to Potter and Weasley about you?"
"Oh, that's the fun part. I'm to stay with the lot of them over the Christmas break in order to assure Granger's safety."
Blaise burst out laughing.
"Oh, you're actually serious.."
"Of course I'm serious you git! Do you think I would joke about something like that?"
"How did you get conned into that one?"
"I have absolutely no idea, but it's been made clear that there is no getting out of it."
"Well, at least you get to spend some time with Hermione."
"Oh yeah, because they're definitely going to let her near me.."
"Come on, maybe it won't be that bad.."
Draco glared at him.
"Well alright, it's going to be horrible, but I was trying to lighten up the situation a little bit."
"That's not even possible."
"What are your parents going to say?"
"They don't know where I'm going. Dumbledore has sent them a message saying that I am staying here at the school as part of my Head's duties. And if anyone asks you where I am, tell them the same thing."
"Alright."
"Well, I'll try and send you an owl or something. If you don't hear from me, I'm more than likely dead."
"I don't think you'll be-"
"WHAT?! ARE YOU BLOODY MENTAL?!"
Draco and Blaise looked over at Ron, who was red in the face.
Blaise clapped Draco on the shoulder. "Well, good luck mate."
Blaise walked out of the Great Hall, leaving Draco alone with Harry, Hermione, Ginny, Ron and Dumbledore. Knowing that the situation couldn't be avoided any longer, Draco made his way over towards the group of them, making sure to keep his distance, especially cause Ron was now looking at him with a murderous look.
"THERE IS NO BLOODY WAY THAT GIT IS COMING TO MY HOUSE!"
"Mr. Weasley, I have already discussed this matter with your mother, who approved of the situation."
Draco snorted. He highly doubted that she approved of the situation.
"THERE IS NO BLOODY WAY SHE SAID OKAY. I REFUSE TO LET THAT PUREBLOOD TRASH INTO MY HOUSE!"
"Ron, shut up," Ginny snapped.
Ron looked at Ginny incredulously.
"Thank you Ms. Weasley. Now, Mr. Weasley, the reason that this is happening is to ensure that Ms. Granger has as much protection as possible, as once again our intruder was able to get past the barriers that are around the school last night."
"And you think Malfoy is going to protect her? He's probably the one who lets the guy in every time! How else would he be able to get in past all of the protection spells that are around this school?!" Ron exclaimed.
"I can assure you that Mr. Malfoy plays no part in it."
"HE'S A BLOODY DEATH EATER!" Ron exploded.
Draco stormed forward angrily. He ripped his left sleeve, showing his unmarked arm.
"For your information Weasley, I am not a Death Eater, so you can shove that accusation straight up your ass."
"As you can see, Draco is not a Death Eater," Dumbledore stated simply.
"Just because he doesn't have the mark doesn't prove anything. Look at who his father is."
Draco was about to explode, but he was cut off.
"Ronald, get over it. He is not a Death Eater. A son cannot choose who is father is, and should not be judged because of it. Malfoy is coming with us to the Burrow, whether you like it or not."
"Are you defending him?!"
Draco was just as shocked as Ron was.
"Ms. Granger is right. The plans have been set, and they will not be altered in any way. Regardless of if you believe it or not, Mr. Malfoy is there in order to increase protection."
"Increase protection? He hates her! Why would he want to protect her?!"
"Not everyone holds grudges as strongly as you do Mr. Weasley. Besides, I have full trust in Draco and believe that he will do nothing to purposely harm Ms. Granger."
"Harry, do you hear this?!" Ron exclaimed, looking at his best friend.
Harry had been watching the entire exchange closely, and he had picked up on what Dumbledore had said, and realized that maybe there was some truth behind his words. Hermione had been acting a little different lately, and she didn't seem to be overly upset about the idea of Draco spending the holidays with them at the Burrow, and vice versa. In fact, both seemed quite calm about the arrangement, which Harry found odd.. Not only that, but Hermione had defended him.
"I've heard it all Ron, and if Dumbledore thinks that Malfoy can be trusted, then we need to respect his decision."
Ron's mouth hung open in astonishment.
"I am glad to see that you are understanding of the situation Harry, and hope that you can persuade Mr. Weasley here to feel the same way as you do. I assure you that I am doing this as a means of protection to Ms. Granger, as Mr. Malfoy has been doing an excellent job to ensure her safety thus far. I also like knowing that the Head's of the school are sticking together, regardless of the circumstances."
Harry nodded.
"You may all go and back your belongings, the carriages will be arriving at noon, and Mrs. Weasley will be waiting for you all on Platform 9 ¾."
Ginny walked ahead with Hermione, and Draco followed behind them. Ron grabbed Harry's arm angrily.
"Harry, are you bloody mental? How can you agree that Malfoy is to be trusted? It's Malfoy!" Ron hissed.
"Ron, I don't trust him. But what good is that going to do saying it to Dumbledore? There's nothing we can do to change the situation regardless of what we say. The best thing that I could do was to agree with what he said, but that doesn't mean I meant what I was saying. Obviously I am going to do everything I can to make sure that Malfoy stays away from Hermione, and that he doesn't do anything to harm her, or any of your family."
"I don't care what Dumbledore said, Malfoy is not to be trusted. His father is a Death Eater, and we all know that he was just dying to follow in his father's footsteps, and now all of a sudden that has changed? I call bullshit!"
"He's going to be surrounded by people who despise him, so I don't think we have that much to worry about. He would be stupid to try something."
Ron grinned evilly. "That's right. He's not going to have Crabbe and Goyle or the rest of the Slytherin's by his side."
"Exactly. So let's just keep our eye on him."
"And on Hermione. Did you hear her defending that git?" Ron asked.
"I did."
"Don't you find that a bit… odd?"
"I find it extremely odd, which is why I think we should keep an eye on both of them. I feel that there is something going on between them that we don't know about."
"What do you mean something going on between them?" Ron asked angrily.
"I don't know, but they don't seem to hate each other as much as we believed."
"Of course they hate each other Harry!" Ron snapped.
"I'm just saying, don't be surprised if that isn't true, especially after Dumbledore's comment."
"They hate each other, and that's final!" Ron hissed angrily.
"Alright," Harry said refusing to argue with Ron any longer. Harry loved Ron, he was his best friend, but Harry knew that Ron could be extremely thick about things, especially when it related to Hermione. He was sure that Ron was refusing to believe what he was saying because he didn't want to think it was true. Even though Ron had messed up, Harry knew that Ron still loved Hermione, and hoped that with time she would forgive him and give him another chance. Harry seriously doubted that Hermione would, but there was no telling Ron that, he wouldn't listen.
Harry and Ron headed back to the Gryffindor tower to pack up their belongings that they would need for the Christmas break. Harry kept to himself while packing, trying to figure out why Dumbledore had felt the need to send Draco to the Burrow. It was true that he had been there every single time Hermione had been attacked, but did Dumbledore seriously think that he or Ron, or any of the other Weasley's would let something happen to Hermione? Of course he knew that, so why would he send Draco to a place where he knew he was not wanted? To a place where everyone hated him? It didn't make any sense to Harry. He knew Dumbledore had reasoning's behind everything he did, but Harry seriously doubted that sending Malfoy to the Burrow was to ensure Hermione's safety. It had to be for some other reason..
Was Dumbledore hoping that they would all put the past behind them and end up becoming friends? He could see Dumbledore hoping for something like this, he was after all always talking about uniting the houses, but forming a friendship between Malfoy, Ron, Hermione and himself? That was next to impossible.
Unless.. Hermione and Malfoy had already started forming a friendship of sorts? It could explain why she had stuck up for him when Ron was making comments about his family. Hermione never would have stuck up for Draco regardless of what Ron would have said to him before..
There was only way that he was going to be able to get any answers, and that meant going to the source. Harry needed to talk to Hermione.
