Draco threw his packed bag onto his bed and zipped it shut. Well, Weasley took the news just as well as he had anticipated, by completely freaking out. Draco was surprised at how quiet Harry had been throughout the whole thing, and was quite surprised when he didn't put up an argument about his joining them for the Christmas break. He had been even more surprised when Harry and agreed with Dumbledore's choice of sending Draco with them.
He wasn't fooled however, Draco knew that Harry didn't trust him, regardless of what he had said to Dumbledore. Harry wanted Dumbledore's approval and he looked up to the man, there was no way he was going to say anything that would register disappointment. Draco knew that his time at the Burrow was going to be horrible, there was no denying it. Both him and his father had treated the Weasley family like complete garbage, and now they had the perfect opportunity to return the favour because there was nothing he could do about it.
He didn't know how many Weasley children there were, but he knew that he was going to be seriously outnumbered. Draco knew there were a few older brothers that had left Hogwarts before they had arrived, but he couldn't be certain of the exact amount of siblings Ron had. Ginny however, seemed to have a somewhat understanding and mutual respect of his presence, and Draco was hoping that he could at least count on her and Hermione to keep him somewhat safe.
Draco snorted. Who was he kidding? He was screwed.
He didn't understand why Dumbledore felt the need to send him to the Burrow. The Weasley's had more than enough family members to keep Hermione safe. The only thing his presence was going to do was to start trouble, something Dumbledore was sure to know. Besides, he didn't even know what was going on between him and Hermione, and at the moment she was ignoring him anyways, so what good was that going to do? She had completely ignored him since last night, besides when she was sticking up for him to Ron, but even then she had refused to look at him. He knew it was because of what she had said last night, but he didn't even fully understand the meaning of her words anyways.
The next two weeks were going to be the worst weeks of his life. Losing to Potter in Quidditch every year wasn't even as bad as having to be in the continuous presence of all of these people.
He looked at the clock and sneered. The carriages were going to be here in twenty minutes. Awesome.
He grabbed his trunk and dragged it into the living quarters he was sharing with Hermione, and watched as her door swung open, and she came out carrying her trunk, and an animal cage. He could hear hissing coming out of the animal carrier than she had slung under her arm.
"Crookshanks, it's okay sweetie, we're going to the Burrow! Just be patient and you'll be out of this thing soon enough."
"I seriously doubt that your pet can understand you Granger," Draco stated amused.
"Actually, Crooky is a very intelligent and does know what I'm saying. Don't you baby," Hermione said affectionately, sticking her face up against the cage.
"You've lost it Granger."
Hermione looked over at him and stuck out her tongue. Draco smirked, dropped his trunk, and made his way over towards her. Her eyes widened as she watched him approach her.
She felt him remove her trunk and cat carrier from her hands and heard him place them on the floor, and before she could say anything his lips crashed on hers. She closed her eyes, and enjoyed the sweet taste that she associated with him, and the feeling of butterflies exploding in her stomach as he wrapped his arms around her waist and drew her closer to his body. She kissed him back, savoring the moment.
They were interrupted by a knock on the door. Draco unwillingly pulled back, and took a deep breath, composing himself.
He went and answered the door as Hermione tried to get herself under control.
"Granger, the Weaselette is here, wants to know if we're ready to go."
Ginny walked inside and looked at Hermione. She raised an eyebrow and smirked at her friends flushed face.
"I have everything right here ready to go. Are you ready Malfoy?" Hermione asked.
"As ready as I can be," Draco drawled.
"Alright you two, then lets go. Harry and Ron are already downstairs waiting for us."
"Oh goody," Draco said.
"Play nice Draco," Hermione said softly. "Or you're just going to make matters worse."
Draco rolled his eyes.
They grabbed their trunks and followed Ginny out of the portrait hole and downstairs to the front entrance. Hermione spotted Harry and Ron standing near the doors, and felt her stomach turn.
"Okay, we're all here, let's go," Ginny said as they approached Harry and Ron.
Harry and Ron grabbed their trunks and lead the way through the front doors and towards the carriages. Draco noticed that Hermione stayed close to him instead of running to catch up with Harry and Ron, who had put some distance between them. Draco didn't mind the distance, in fact he was enjoying every second of it, because in a few hours distance was going to be hard to come by.
They threw their trunks onto the carriage, and climbed inside. Draco tried to keep his face indifferent as he sat beside Hermione, and across from Harry and Ron. He did not want them to know how their close proximity was affecting him.
Draco could feel Ron glaring daggers at him, but he kept his gaze focused out the window.
"So, how great is it that we get an extra week off from school?" Ginny asked breaking the awkward silence.
"It would be great if we didn't have to spend it in the proximity with a git," Ron said.
"I'm just as happy about the arrangement as you are Weasley," Draco stated, finally turning his attention towards him.
"You're probably ecstatic about it. Everything falling perfectly into place for your plan Malfoy?" Ron snarled.
"And what plan am I supposed to be setting in motion exactly?" Draco questioned, keeping his tone bored.
"One of your Death Eater plans!" Ron snapped.
Draco felt is temper rising, but kept it under control. He was not going to let Ron know how angered he was by his words. Besides, he didn't want to end up getting his ass kicked already.
"I'm not a Death Eater, which has already been proven to you," Draco said slowly.
"Just because you don't bare the mark, it does not mean you're not a Death Eater! You're probably working under cover for them!" Ron hissed angrily.
"You caught me."
"I knew it! I know you're up to something Malfoy, and I am going to figure out what it is and expose you for the git that you are!"
"Feel free," Draco stated, dismissing the conversation.
"Why you little stuck up Pureblood prick!" Ron hissed as he lunged across the carriage at Draco, his fist connecting with Draco's face.
Before Draco could retaliate, Ron was thrown back into his seat by the force of Hermione's shielding charm that she cast.
"Granger, take down the spell," Draco said dangerously.
"Yeah Hermione, drop the spell so I can ruin that ugly face of his some more," Ron hissed.
"That's ENOUGH! Both of you!" Hermione snapped. "You two need to learn how to play nice, because you're stuck in each others company for the next two weeks, and nothing is going to change that. And Ronald, how dare you attack someone who wasn't paying attention! If we were back at the school I would deduct house points and throw you in detention!"
"He started it!" Ron snapped.
"I was here for the entire thing Ron and I know that you're the one who started it, so grow up and take responsibility for your actions! Dumbledore was relying on you and trusted that you would be able to handle the situation in a mature way, and right now you are doing just the opposite!"
"Well I don't trust him Hermione, and neither does Harry! I don't care what kind of lies he's thrown together to get Dumbledore's trust, but he is not fooling us!"
"Dumbledore isn't the only person who trusts him, I do."
"WHAT?!" Ron yelled.
"Yes Ron, I trust him."
"ARE YOU BLOODY MENTAL? DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THE WAY HE'S TREATED US ALL THE PAST COUPLE YEARS, THE THINGS THAT HE'S DONE?!"
"Of course I do."
"THEN HOW CAN YOU SIT HERE AND SAY THAT YOU TRUST HIM?"
"BECAUSE Ron, he's had more than enough opportunities to have me killed this year and he hasn't. He was there and protected me when no one else was, not even you or Harry!"
"Of COURSE he was the one there, he's the one who's behind it all! He's probably working together with whoever it is and the whole plan was to gain your trust and make you vulnerable! I don't care what you say, he has an ulterior motive for everything."
"That's enough Ron!" Hermione snapped.
"How can you stand there and defend him?"
"Who was there when I got attacked in the hallway Ron? Who's been the one to take me to the hospital wing when I desperately needed it?"
Ron grumbled something under his breath.
"It was Malfoy, not Harry or you. That's why I trust him. He could have just left me to die on multiple occasions, yet here I stand in front of you healthy and alive. So why don't you ask me again why I don't trust him?"
"He was only doing it to save his own ass."
Hermione shook her head in disappointment. "Whatever Ron."
The rest of the carriage ride was quiet, as Hermione and Ron were still mad at each other, and no one else knew how to break the tension. Draco kept glancing at Hermione, wondering why she would fight with her own friend defending his honour. He wished she would take down the shielding charm that she still had around Ron and himself, but was also thankful that she didn't, because he didn't want another punch to his face. Speaking of, his face was throbbing, but he wasn't going to give Ron the satisfaction of seeing that it was bothering him.
He could tell from the smirk on Ron's face when he glanced at Draco that he had more than likely already started to bruise. His skin was extremely sensitive and bruised easily.
When the carriages finally came to a halt, Ron scrambled off first, followed by Harry. Hermione waited until Ron was out of the carriage, and then she turned to him and took down her shield charm.
"Do you want me to heal your face?" Hermione asked.
"How bad does it look?" Draco asked.
"Well you don't look like your pretty boy self anymore Malfoy." Ginny said smirking.
Draco smirked.
"Just leave it."
"Are you sure?" Hermione asked.
"If I get it removed I show weakness, and there is no way in hell that I am showing that git that he gets to me. It'll fade eventually."
"Mum's going to be pissed," Ginny said smirking.
"Huh?" Draco stated, confused.
"Oh don't get me wrong, she isn't exactly fond of you, but she takes Dumbledore's orders very seriously, and I am sure that he stated that no harm was to come of you while you are staying at our place. In fact, I am sure he definitely made that clear considering, and here you are not even at the house yet and already you're sporting a clear indication that Ron can't obey orders."
"Oh…"
"Don't worry, it will be an interesting show."
Draco shrugged, and got out of the carriage, with Ginny and Hermione following close behind. They boarded the Hogwarts Express, and before Draco knew it, they were at Kings Cross Station.
He let out a deep sigh, and followed Hermione and Ginny out onto the platform to Mr. and Mrs. Weasley. Draco could see Harry and Ron already at their side. When he approached, he noticed Mr. Weasley stiffen.
"Hermione! Ginny dear! Oh how good it is to see you both!" Mrs. Weasley exclaimed as she grabbed them both for a hug.
She pulled back and then looked at Draco. Her eyes widened as she took in his appearance, and she snapped her head over at Ron, who was refusing to meet her eyes.
"Ronald Weasley!" Molly snapped.
"What mum?" Ron asked.
"What happened to this boys face?"
"Why don't you ask him, the slimy git."
Molly swung her purse at Ron, and it ended up hitting him in the side of the head.
"I am sorry for my sons actions," Molly said stiffly.
"Don't apologize to him! He deserves it! He shouldn't even be here in the first place!"
Molly turned to Ron, her eyes narrowed. "That's enough! Dumbledore has requested that he stay with us, and that is that! If you have a problem with it then you can get your ass on that train and head back to Hogwarts!"
Draco caught Ginny smirking from the corner of his eye, and when he looked over at her she winked.
"Do I make myself clear?" Molly asked dangerously, her attention on Ron.
"Yes ma'am," Ron muttered, his face red.
"Good. Oh Harry dear, it is extremely nice to see you again, I am glad that you're staying for the holidays, you know you are always welcome at our home."
Draco felt eyes on him, and he turned to Arthur, who was studying him closely.
As Molly walked away with the group, Arthur held Draco behind.
"I do not know why Dumbledore feels that you need to stay with us over the holidays, but I trust his decision. That does not however mean that I trust you."
Draco just stood there, not knowing what to say.
"If any harm comes to my family due to your presence, you will have me to deal with. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes."
"Good. Now, let's catch up with the rest of them, shall we?"
Draco followed behind Arthur as they made their way to the rest of the group, who was standing around a black car. When he walked up to them, he could feel Hermione looking at him, but he kept his attention elsewhere.
"Alright, everyone throw your luggage in the trunk and we'll set off," Arthur stated.
Draco placed his trunk with everyone else's and they all piled into the vehicle. Draco was surprised that they could all fit, and then realized that the vehicle was more than likely altered by magic. He was impressed, although he would never admit it.
Draco ended up sitting between Hermione and Ginny, which he figured was more than likely their plan, but he didn't mind. He was most comfortable in their presence compared to everyone else, and figured he was better off with someone on his side.
When they arrived at the house, Draco had to keep the disgust off of his face. There should have been no way that the house was standing without some pieces of it falling off, the way rooms were added randomly all over the place. It was obvious that magic was used to add rooms as the family got larger, but he saw the looks of happiness on everyone's faces as they came to a stop in front of the house. Even Hermione's face was lit up in joy.
"We're here," she whispered to him softly.
He nodded, not trusting himself to speak.
Everyone started piling out of the car speaking happily, and Draco followed behind feeling out of place and awkward. Never in his life did he think we was going to be spending any sort of time at the Weasley's house. He watched as they all headed towards the front door, smiling and laughing.
"Come on," Molly said motioning Draco forward.
He swallowed and followed behind Molly.
Draco could hear shouting and laughter coming from inside the house. As he entered the room, it stopped.
Next thing he knew, the Weasley twins were on him.
"Well, what do we have here?"
"It looks like baby Malfoy to me Fred."
"I think you're right George, but what on earth would he be here at our place?"
"That is a good question Fred."
Both of them stared at Draco, waiting for an answer.
"He's here because of Dumbledore," Molly said pressing her hand on Draco's back as she pushed him farther into the room.
"And why on earth would he send him here?" Fred asked.
"Stop asking so many questions Fred," Molly snapped.
"I'm not Fred!"
"Oh, sorry George."
"Just kidding, I am Fred!"
Fred jumped out of the way as Molly swung her purse in his direction.
"Honestly woman, you think you'd learn."
"And I think that if the two of you cause any funny business at all during the holidays here, I'll be sending you to your Uncles!"
Fred and George shared a look.
"Now, all of you go and put your things away in your rooms and then we will gather here for dinner."
Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny started heading towards their rooms, as Draco stood there awkwardly.
"Oh Hermione!" Molly exclaimed.
"Yeah?" Hermione asked as she headed back towards them.
"Can you please show Draco here to his bedroom? I'm having him stay in Bill's old room."
Hermione nodded.
Molly leaned in towards her so only Hermione can hear. "And I'm also giving him that room so he's alone. I don't trust Fred and George."
Hermione smiled.
She looked over at Draco who was looking completely out of place and uncomfortable, and Hermione felt a pang in her chest. She felt guilty because she knew she was the reason that he was here in the first place.
"Come on," Hermione said waving him in the direction of the staircase.
Draco grabbed his trunk and followed obediently behind Hermione.
She showed him the way to Bills room, and opened the door. Draco looked around, taking in the living arrangements. It was a typical bedroom, nothing too fancy or over the top. He found he actually didn't mind it all that much.
He threw his trunk onto his bed, and let out a deep breath.
"Hey, I'm sorry to put you through all this," Hermione said softly.
Draco ran his hand through his hair and shrugged saying, "Don't worry about it."
Hermione walked towards him and sat down on his bed. "I'm serious. I know you don't want to be here, and that this is not exactly your idea of a holiday. I do feel bad that Dumbledore made you come here for the holidays instead of being somewhere you would much rather be."
Draco moved so he was standing over her, and he grabbed Hermione's hands and pulled her up so she was standing up, and then he leaned down and kissed her softly.
Hermione felt her cheeks flush at his gentleness.
He pulled away, and Hermione stood on her tiptoes and pecked him gently back, which made Draco smirk.
"You know, staying here may not be too bad after all," Draco said still smirking.
Hermione shoved him playfully.
"Feisty, I like it."
"Oh stop!"
Draco smirked.
"Hermione!"
Hermione looked towards the door.
"Hermione! Where are you?"
"Go," Draco stated.
"What?"
"Go. Your friends are calling for you. You don't need to stay here with me. I'll be fine."
"We're supposed to head down for dinner anyways so why don't you come with me?"
"I don't know. I was just going to stay up here."
"Oh no you're not. Mrs. Weasley will be offended if you don't come down for dinner. There is no greater insult than avoiding her cooking. Besides, her food is amazing you don't want to miss it."
"I highly doubt that I am invited for dinner."
"Draco, don't be stupid. You're a guest here and she isn't going to let you starve. And neither am I. If you don't go down for dinner then I'm not either," Hermione said sitting down on his bed stubbornly.
Draco quirked an eyebrow.
"That's right!"
"Alright fine Granger, let's go."
Hermione smiled victorious.
She linked her arm through his and headed out into the hallway.
"Oi! There you are," Ron said walking towards her. He stopped as he noticed who Hermione was with.
"Oh.. you're with him."
"We were just heading down to dinner. Was there anything you wanted?" Hermione asked.
"No. Was coming to find you to walk with you down to dinner. But I can see that you're already preoccupied."
Hermione's smile faltered, but she did not unlink her arm from Draco's.
"Well Malfoy doesn't know his way around the house yet, so I wasn't going to leave him to walk around alone in a house where he already feels uncomfortable enough."
"Who cares how he feels."
"I do," Hermione said angrily. "Now if you'll excuse us we're heading down for dinner."
She walked past Ron, dragging Draco with her.
"You don't have to pick fights with your friends because of me."
"Oh honestly, he can be a real prat sometimes."
Draco snorted.
He unlinked his arm from hers as they entered the kitchen, and Draco felt multiple pairs of eyes on him. He kept his eyes cast ahead of him, refusing to acknowledge the stares that were sent in his direction.
"Just choose a seat," Molly said as she rushed around the kitchen.
Draco looked around the table to see where he felt he was safest. Fred and George were staring at him mischievously, so Draco knew that he wanted to be as far away from them as possible. He remembered the twins from school, and there was no stopping them from doing what they wanted to do. They didn't seem to be afraid of authority figures, and Draco knew they were probably just waiting to pull some form of prank on him. His eyes continued down the table, and saw Ginny sitting next to one of the twins, he could never tell which one was which, with Harry on her other side, followed by an empty seat which Draco assumed was for Ron. Next to the empty seat sat Mr. Weasley, who was sitting at the head of the table.
He felt a tug on his arm.
Hermione was steering him towards the seats that were across from Harry, Ginny, and Ron, and Draco followed, not knowing what else to do. As much as he disliked Ron and Harry, he would take his chances with sitting across from them compared to the twins.
