Golden Hearts: Chapter 3: The Long Awaited Letter
Arumus walked back to the Manor after returning the books. He hadn't felt up to browsing the titles because his memories kept him preoccupied, so he had bid the aged muggle librarian goodbye and left rather hurriedly.
He decided to head for his uncle's study and peruse the history books. He always found history pleasantly distracting, as it only required time to read and a bit of imagination. Arumus entered the study and was surprised to discover Uncle Lucius behind the dark, sleek mahogany desk.
"Good morning, Uncle Lucius," He greeted. "You've returned from London." Arumus gazed steadily at his uncle, and he smiled a slight, satisfied smile.
"Ah, Arumus, I'm pleased to see you so early. I assumed you had gone out into the grounds when I didn't find you in your room." Lucius glanced up, his eyes smiling, though his face remained formally expressionless.
"I did walk for a while in the forest, sir," Arumus said, partially answering the unasked question.
Lucius did smile, then, the corners of his mouth twitching. "I see. Well, Nephew, today is an important day. A letter has arrived for you." He removed the letter from a pocket in his robes and set it upon the desk. "Take it."
Arumus picked up the letter, which was in a thick vellum envelope and addressed to him in emerald green ink.
Mr. A. C. M. Lestrange
Main Study
The Malfoy Mannor
Wiltshire, England
Mouth dry, he turned the envelope over and examined the crest that sealed the envelope. The golden seal displayed the snake, lion, raven, and badger of the four houses and an ornate letter "H." The long awaited day had finally arrived. He had recieved his letter. Fingers shaking, he broke the seal and removed the thick parchment, unfolding it to read.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

(Order of Merlin, First Class; Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock, Supreme Mugwamp, International Confederation of Wizards)

Arumus' heart seemed to be fluttering in his chest. He would finally be allowed to learn freely about magic and practice it with his very own wand. He glanced up from the parchment in his hands and caught his uncle's pleased expression.
"Thank you, Uncle."
Uncle Lucius nodded and gestured for Arumus to have a seat across from him. Lucius waited until he was seated to begin.
"Now that you will be attending Hogwarts, there are a few things I must tell you." Lucius paused, considering his nephew. "You will be studying under the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. You know that this family, among others, has often found ourselves opposing Dumbledore both politically and regarding personal matters."
Arumus nodded, thinking of several accounts he had read about the First Wizarding War, which had ended abruptly roughly twelve years ago when the Dark Lord had mysteriously disappeared after encountering Harry Potter. Truly, Arumus wanted to meet Potter, if only to see the truth behind the glaring inaccuracies Draco spouted about him. Dumbledore had headed the opposition against the Dark Lord, he recalled, and his family had supported the dark wizard’s rise to power.
Lucius continued. "Dumbledore and I have disagreed on many issues while I have served as school governor. However, I have laid plans to ensure that this year is the last Dumbledore serves as Headmaster. I cannot inform you of the details, but I do not want you to be alarmed if strange things begin to occur at Hogwarts." He seemed to be weighing his words carefully.
"Sir, may I ask the nature of these strange occurrences?" Arumus ventured tentatively, wondering how much his uncle would divulge.
Lucius regarded Arumus and seemed to come to a decision. "You have read Hogwarts, A History?" Arumus nodded assent. "Then you know of the Chamber of Secrets. Well, I have reason to believe that someone will try to open the Chamber once again and release the monster within."
Arumus nodded. "I see." He silently wondered how his uncle could know such a thing. He was sure, however, that his uncle's ambition and pride were weighty enough for him to disregard others' safety, even their lives. He cared for Lucius, but he, like all people Arumus had met, had terrifying flaws.
"Simply keep your head down, behave, and learn all you can outside class about Defense Against the Dark Arts, as I doubt you will learn much in that subject. The new teacher is a complete fool, though he was accepted because he was the only one to apply." Uncle Lucius sounded rather disgusted about this.
"Yes, sir." Arumus knew from the look in his uncle's eyes, a kind of coldness he rarely saw directed his way, that he would not reveal any further information about the details he had so carefully avoided mentioning. The subject seemed to border on one of those secrets Lucius kept locked somewhere deep within his soul.
"We will go to Diagon Alley later today. I will be accompanying both you and Draco. Be ready to leave at 11 am. I will meet you both in the entrance hall." Lucius stood and walked to the window, gazing out over the grounds unseeingly.
Arumus knew he had been dismissed.
