The next morning when he woke, Harry's head still ached slightly but it wasn't something a simple pain killing draught didn't take care of quickly. Along with that, there was still a slight queasiness but, again, it was easily handled. He was less than thrilled, however, when talking over their meal, Tom told him that he was going to to have to leave slightly earlier than when he appeared because he would get to re-experience the whole episode when he went back in time. Yes, it was true but he wasn't looking forward to doing that either. On the upside, though, they were going to work out how to handle the thing before hand so he would know just what to do. Though there was one odd thing he was noticing; a rage at Dumbledore.
Now, really, a hatred of Dumbledore was something that was part and parcel anymore. It was always there, no matter what. This, though, didn't feel the same. It was as though it were something that wasn't coming from him but from something else. Though he had plenty of reasons to hate the old goat, and did, the rage that came from this felt as though it wasn’t his. He knew rage and what it felt like but this didn't feel the same. There was even an urge to attack the man, to hunt him out and do that. In all he felt about the man, that didn't come into play. He was too cautious to even think about that, knowing it could derail any plans he and Tom had for him, not to mention expose what they were doing. More than anything, that unnerved him. And, it was one of the things he brought up to Tom over their morning meal.
Sitting there, staring down at his plate, Tom frowned as he mulled that over. Drumming his fingers on the table, he shook his head then said, “Best I can come up with is that it does have to do with that false vision. It may well have been implanted like that to make it appear as though it's coming from me. How I feel about Dumbledore is well known to him. In his mind, this is something that would fit with what he knows of me so, if it is his doing, something I’m sure of, he would include that. So, it would also be something that he'd use to persuade you to do what it is he wants you to do, showing how 'rotten' I am.”
Sneering, Harry shook his head but said nothing while he worked on devouring his breakfast.
Picking at his food, Tom's brow was puckered as he tried to think over all the possible ways that the old coot could have managed what he did and how it might affect Harry. He was sure now that it was how his partner said; this was something that was an attempt to toss them together once more. Along with that, he was certain that Dumbledore was going to try to convince his lover that there was something horrific behind it that was going to put him in all kinds of danger. That he didn't like. In fact, his first instinct was to bump up some plans and get Harry the hell out of Hogwarts before Dumbledore could even try. But he couldn't do that. He needed Harry to stay right where he was. Snape was good at what he did but Harry had more of an inside track when it came to things because there was no doubt about his loyalties. For Severus, that would always be the case, thus people not being as free and open about such things. No, Harry needed to stay right where he was for the time being. He would consider after Dumbledore was gone, pulling him out and having someone teach him so they could further their agenda. Starting to eat once more, he said, “I, or we, need to research this but I don't think either of us have the time. You have an overload of what you need to do and we both have meetings most of the day. Not to mention that Lucius will be here and we both need to talk to him to start the ball rolling on what we need done to get you emancipated. Wormtail is around but he wouldn't know where to start. Barty, though good at many things, isn't the best at research. Plus, he will be taking on those that are needing some retraining so time for this won't be something he has.”
Knowing the healer was going to start bring some of those in a coma out today, Harry nodded then began to think. His first thought went to Narcissa Malfoy. She sat by her sister's bedside every day, doing nothing but reading or other quiet things. Bella and her husband weren't going to be brought out for a while yet, along with some of the other known Death Eaters, as the damage to them was worse than the others. Quietly, after taking a couple more bites, he asked, “How good is Narcissa Malfoy at such things? I know she's not a Death Eater but she is here every day and it would give her something to do.”
Thinking that over, Tom said, slowly, “She is no vapid fool the way so many of her standing are. If I remember correctly, she did fairly well in school. As we can get the books for her or she can look them up in the Malfoy library, I would say that it comes down to just reading and taking some notes for us as well as marking passages. That is something that she should have no issue with. I say that you approach her with the proposal this morning when she comes in. I'll gather what books might be related then give them to her.”
“I'm betting the Black family library has something we could use but we have no way of getting to that,” Harry said, tone slightly wistful.
“I agree, it would. But, as you said, there is no way to get to it. This, for now, will have to do. If it fails, we can see about finding a way to get to some of what is there,” Tom told him.
Nodding in agreement, Harry went back to his breakfast while Tom switched to the topic of just what they had to do that day and who was coming when.
Around noon, Harry and Tom were in their study, waiting for Lucius Malfoy, while going over some other things. The meeting with Lucius was going to take some time so they were ensuring that they were caught up with other things so as not to end up behind because of it. On the upside, though, Narcissa had readily agreed to do the reading for them as well as ensuring that she told no one, other than Lucius. The two of them planned to impress upon her husband the need for secrecy in this. As Lucius knew that Voldemort still wasn't happy with him over the destruction of the diary, it was a sure bet that he would do that. Coupled with that, what they needed to talk to him about was something he was going to have to keep to himself as it was foreshadowing of what was coming. Knowing the blond the way he did, Voldemort was certain that he would do that, seeing it as a way to work towards gaining favor back.
Just as they were putting things away, waiting for Malfoy to show up, there was a knock on the door. Knowing that was Lucius, Voldemort beckoned him in then motioned for him to take a seat in front of the desk. Once that was handled, he launched right in, “Luciussss, I have a rather delicate job for you that requiressss your sssspecial sssskills to handle.”
Looking solemn but eyes alight at the prospect of something he alone could handle, he replied, “Anything you wish, milord.”
“Before we begin, I wissssh to impressss upon you that thisss issss to go no further. It issss sssssomething that we are planning right now that no one knowssss about. Because you will have the foresssshadowing, you will, of coursssse, take part,” Voldemort told him, shooting him a glare to imply that if word of what he was about to say leaked out there would be a great deal of pain involved.
Taking that as the warning it was intended to be, the elder Malfoy nodded then said, “Of course. It goes no further than this room.”
Figuring that was all the warning that needed to be given on the topic, Voldemort launched in, “Thissss must be done with the utmosssst sssssecrecy, ussssing our people if at all posssssible. I need you to obtain the proper formssss for the emancipation of a minor. I alsssso asssssume that your assssisssstance will be needed in filling them out as well.”
Nodding, mind already going a mile a minute as to how he would go about this, Lucius replied, “I will do that. However, as this is a part of the Ministry I don't have much influence in, let alone visit, it may take me some time to get them without it raising eyebrows. Do I have a time frame to work with?”
“I would like them in a couple weeksssss if at all posssssible, Luciussss,” Voldemort told him, shooting a sidelong glance to Evan who was paying close attention. “I need for thingsssss to be in place when I sssset my plan in motion.”
Once more, the blond nodded, “I believe that I have a contact that I can get the forms from easily enough as he doesn't ask too many questions. It will just take a donation on my part to him to get him to slip them out to me. As for the filling out part... whatever you need when you need it is not an issue. I do have to ask, though; is this just filling them out or will you need me to have them file them as well? That part will be trickier as such things are closely monitored because they deal with children's welfare.”
Thinking that over, Voldemort rubbed his chin in a thoughtful manner as that was going to be the tricky part. “No, I don't believe sssso. However, once the eventssss take place I will need your vaulted connection to Fudge to sssset up a meeting with him and the party that will be in need of the formssss. It may involve him having to sssshow up at Hogwartssss to have it. Alsssso, it will need to be done in the utmosssst sssswiftnessss after the event before Dumbledore can pussssh through his own agenda on the matter.”
Though he nodded, Lucius was curious about just who could be so important as to warrant such a thing. There was, really, only one name that came to mind. If that were the case then this was going to be big and his footsteps through it were going to have to be extra light in the matter so as not to be detected. As what he did anyway was a tricky dance, he felt he needed to know whom he was dealing with so he could prepare how he was going to go about it. “I don't wish to overstep my bounds with this question but, as it will determine how I go about things and to protect myself from any suspicion or that being thrown on anyone else...”
Knowing what Lucius was going for, Voldemort waved a dismissive hand, “It will be for Harry Potter.”
Eyes widening fractionally, Lucius' mind began to race as to how he could even manage to do this without drawing suspicion to himself. That was going to be about the trickiest bit of maneuvering that he had ever pulled off since anything dealing with Potter was scrutinized to the utmost degree. Unable to stop himself, he all but whispered, “Potter? You want him to be emancipated?”
Unable to stop himself, Voldemort smirked when he nodded. “Indeed, Luciusssss, that is the idea. With what I have planned, it will be a casssse of a delicate sssshuffle to get him emancipated before Dumbledore can sssstep in and try to manipulate the sssssituation. I want to be asssssured that everything is ready to go when it happensssss.”
Jumping in before the blond could say anymore, Evan added, “There is already goodwill between the two with the meetings that took place over the summer so I doubt Minister Fudge will have an issue doing so. It will, after all, only make him look good in the press to help the Boy Who Lived sort out things and ensure that he is taken care of.”
Remembering the meetings over the summer, Lucius nodded. “Indeed, that is true. Helping Potter will only make him look good. It will also tweak Dumbledore, something Fudge takes great pleasure in. I believe I can persuade him to do such a thing if we can come up with some kind of cover story to smooth over why I would be taking it upon myself to aid Potter when we have less than a stellar relationship.” Glancing back at Voldemort, he asked, “Do you have any suggestions, milord?”
“I believe I do have something, yessss,” Voldemort, nodded. “In the aftermath, you will be with him on some menial errand or another when he is notified about what happened. Assss you are a trusted advissssor, I don't ssssee where it would be out of boundsss for you to suggest that Potter needssss to be notified. After all, that would be only proper and in looking out for Fudge's best interesssstssss. Then you can ssssuggest the proper way to deal with it, mentioning that Dumbledore will want to, once more, take charge of the boy for his own meanssss. I alsssso would like it to be you that ssssuggesssstsss that Potter be emancipated. That asssssuressss Potter can't be drawn into anything Dumbledore might want from him or have to be following anything the old man wantssss. He does have a boyfriend that issss of age he can sssstay with and be protected there. Coming from you, Fudge sssshould see it assss a good idea. You can mention that it will look good in the presssss for him to go out of hissss way to help Potter after ssssuch a traumatic event. That sssshould be enough to motivate him to our way of thinking on the matter. If anyone were to quesssstion why you would ssssay or do ssssuch a thing, it would come down to your well known disssslike of Dumbledore and the handling of the ssssituation to circumnavigate around him.”
“Indeed, that should work well,” Lucius replied, filing it all away while trying to work out just how to go about it when the time came. “Not to be forward, but, to ensure I know how to go about it...”
Not letting Lucius finish that thought, Voldemort waved a dismissive hand then said, “We will be burning Privet Drive to the ground, Luciussss. The Dark Mark will be hanging over it, ssssomething that Fudge will be certain to want kept out of the presssss. The Durssssley’ssss, if they hold true to what I know of them, will not want the boy to come back after that. Esssspecially since I plan to make certain they know we are doing it becausssse of Potter.” Stopping, he waited for Lucius' reaction, a smirk playing across his lip-less mouth as he did.
It took Lucius several minutes to process what was being said then he just looked at Voldemort in astonishment. Because of the blood wards, no one, at least from what he heard, with the Dark Mark could even get across the boundaries of the house let alone do it harm. Quickly getting himself under control, he asked the most obvious question that came to mind, “Potter is aware of the plot I assume? You did say that he had switched sides.”
“Potter knowssss the plan,” Voldemort nodded, smirk growing. “He issss completely on board with it.”
Thinking it over, Lucius said, slowly, “I am gathering I am to take part in the burning? And I thought the blood wards would prevent any of us from getting near the place.”
Unable to help himself, Voldemort actually grinned at that. Normally, he didn't tolerate such questions but he knew Lucius was asking to determine how he went about doing what was needed in order to protect himself since he would be the one having to deal with Fudge in the aftermath. Waving a dismissive hand, he stated, unable to keep the smug tone out of his voice, “Yessss, Luciussss, you are to take part. Assss you are one of only a few that know thissss is coming, I want you there. Assss for the wardssss...desssspite what Dumbledore wantssss everyone to think, the wardssss are gone. They fell after the term at Hogwartssss ended over the ssssummer when Potter bassssically abandoned hissss home. I asssssure you it will be no problem for ussss to get accesssss to the housssse.” Casting an askance glance to Evan, he added, almost as an afterthought, “Evan will be the one leading thissss misssssion though I will be along on it.”
Startled, Harry looked up then couldn't help the huge, sadistic grin that spread across his face. Oh, that was going to be sweet! He couldn't wait to torch the damned place and see the looks on the Dursley's faces as he did! It would be the ultimate revenge!
Grin still firmly in place, Voldemort nodded to his lover then focused back on Lucius. “It will be, of coursssse, a cautioussss dance you have to do sssso assss not to reveal detailssss but I want only my mosssst trussssted memberssss to be a part of thissss.”
Puffing up slightly at that, Lucius gave a nod then added, “But, of course. I will not disappoint you.”
“Ssssee that you don't, Luciussss,” Voldemort warned. He knew it went without saying that this was a chance for the elder Malfoy to partially redeem himself for what was done to the diary. It wouldn't do for him to mess it up. “When you get the formssss, let me know and we'll sssset to work filling them out. That will, of coursssse, take time, I imagine.”
“It will. Such things are quite complicated. It may be advisable to, afterwards, have one of your followers that is an solicitor, look them over to ensure it's all there. Also, we will need Potter for much of it. His signature will be required for them as well as filling in things only he will know. Though it shouldn't be hard if what was said in the papers over the summer was true.” Stopping, Lucius thought it over for a minute then added, “If I may, it might be advisable for Potter to have his own solicitor in this matter to cover him in case Dumbledore decides to stick his nose into the matter and try to wrest control of the boy away from the Ministry. We know that he's not above doing such a thing and may use his position in the Wizengamot to try to influence the whole situation if it looks as though it's not playing out the way he wants it to.”
Making a dismissive gesture, Voldemort said, “Potter issss not an isssssue. He will be pressssent for ssssuch a thing, of coursssse. I will enssssure that.” Stopping, he then thought over what was just said to him before nodding. “That might be advissssable, Luciussss. I asssssume that you know ssssomeone who could fulfill ssssuch a roll and not assssk uncomfortable questionssss? I would want one that hassss no other sssstake in our affairssss beyond thissss. They sssshould be ssssomeone that hassss a reputation that issss above reproach and no hint of taint or even having been thought to have been assssociated with our causssse in the passsst.”
Quickly thinking that over, several names came to mind but Lucius was unsure which one to pick. “Can I have some time to look into a few people? I want to ensure that I come up with one that will not only fit the need that is there but whom we can trust with such a delicate operation. This will be, after all, a difficult dance to undertake. I would, of course, normally suggest the firm I work with as they are good at toeing that line without having too many questions asked but I don't believe they would be right for such a thing as this.”
Nodding, Voldemort replied, “Of coursssse, Luciussss. Jusssst try to come up with one quickly, before you are able to get the formssss. I, alsssso, want final approval assss to whom issss chossssen. It issss one that I will probably have to work with over the coming monthssss. I alsssso want to enssssure that they will not be ssssusceptible to being sssswayed by the other sssside, no matter the trickssss Dumbledore would employ.”
As that was not unexpected, Lucius nodded, “Of course. I will arrange a complete dossier on them for your perusal so you can have as much background as possible.” Already, Lucius' mind was racing over all he had to do and how to go about it. This was going to be one of those assignments that he relished in many ways. It was, first, going to show Voldemort that the diary, and what happened with it, was an aberration. On the other hand, he always enjoyed the subterfuge of going about and doing things that were hard. It helped to keep his skills at such things in top form.
After covering a couple other minor things, Voldemort dismissed Lucius then leaned back in his chair, a smirk still playing at his lip-less mouth. Glancing over at Evan, he saw he was still grinning slightly. That he could understand. With all he had gone through with the Dursley's over the years, he would definitely want revenge for some of it. This was the perfect way to do that. But, before they could set a definitive date for such a thing, they had to have everything in place. He hoped that Lucius would be able to procure what was needed quickly so he could set the wheels in motion and get this going. The sooner that Dumbledore was thrown off the track, the better they were all going to be.
Drumming his fingers on the arm of the chair he thought things over quickly then reached over and ran his fingers through Evan's hair. “I think, perhaps, Lucius is going to have to be let in on your little secret.”
Leaning into the touch, Evan looked at Voldemort and asked, “Why is that?”
“As intelligent as he is, he's going to find it odd that I can manage to get you here in the middle of the school term to deal with papers for something that isn't needed yet. That will cause him to start questioning things in his mind. That I don't want. Though I also don't want him knowing your identity, I think, this time, it's best he's let in on it so that he doesn't start talking with others about odd things. Everyone knows I frown upon such things but it happens. They are, after all, human.”
Nodding, thinking it over, Evan replied with a sigh, “Whatever you think is best. It might also lean him towards trying harder to make up for his mistake.”
“That it might,” Voldemort said with a nod. After giving Evan's hair a tug, he said, “I believe a break for some food is in order.” Standing, he motioned for Evan to do the same then made his way towards the dining room.
