Draco's head snapped up as he heard the kitchen door open, and he felt his heart rate immediately take off wildly upon watching her enter. He had been hoping that she would come downstairs eventually, seeing as when he tried to make his way upstairs to try and talk to her, Ron was standing at the edge of the stairs protectively, his arms crossed, as if he had anticipated that Draco was going to go and try and make things right with Hermione. A smaller part of him had hoped that she would skip dinner, as he didn't know how she was going to act, or what to say to her while they were surrounded by people who loved her and cared about her. He watched as she made her way towards the table, stopping to talk to Charlie and Molly who were standing by the counters arranging everything. He didn't know what they were talking about, but he noted that Hermione seemed… normal?
He saw her smile at them, and then continue her way towards the table. She must have felt his eyes on her, because next thing he knew, her brown eyes were on him. Before he could fathom what to do, she had turned her attention away from him. He was even more surprised when she took the seat directly across from him. Ron swooped in immediately, taking the seat on her immediate left. Draco had to refrain from rolling his eyes.
He wanted to say something to her, to gauge her reaction, but he didn't know what to say or how to start up a conversation. He could start off by saying sorry? But he wanted to apologize to her without everyone else around. So instead, he sat there silently debating on what to say to her. It didn't help that Ron would keep looking at him every few minutes with a warning look on his face, not that Draco cared. He wasn't afraid of the bloke. But, he knew that starting a scene with Ron wouldn't help matters, so instead he ignored Ron and his annoying looks he kept sending in his direction.
Draco really wished that Blaise was still there. Having a mutual friend with Hermione helped, especially when said friend liked to play the peacekeeper between them. Draco knew he was being a coward, and he scolded himself for it. It was his fault that they were in this mess in the first place, and he needed to man up and fix it.
"Granger," Draco said quietly, not wanting to draw attention from anyone around the table. Thankfully they were all indulging in Mrs. Weasley's food and conversing amongst themselves to notice him, at least for the moment.
Hermione looked up at him, and Draco immediately felt his chest tighten. Yes, she was looking at him, but the way she was looking at him was off.
"What can I do for you Malfoy?" Hermione asked, her tone even.
Draco's eyebrows drew together. She was acknowledging him, yes. But her voice was flat of emotion.
"Can we talk?" He questioned.
"Is that not what we're doing right now?"
Draco had to bite back his angry retort. Getting mad at her and being an arse would get them nowhere.
"You know what I mean," he said, his voice pleading.
He saw a flash of emotion flicker in her eyes, but the next moment it was gone.
"There's nothing to talk about."
"Granger, look-"
"Is he bugging you Hermione?" Ron asked, cutting Draco off midsentence.
"Not at all," Hermione stated.
Draco could feel his temper rising.
"Do you want me to tell him to leave you alone?" Ron asked.
"I'm sitting right here Weasley," Draco stated.
"I'm aware of your unwanted presence Malfoy," Ron snapped.
"Could the two of you refrain from bantering? Honestly, I've had enough of it. I just want to enjoy my meal, is that too much to ask? Or should I take my supper outside so I don't have to listen to the two of you bickering any longer?"
Draco recoiled from Hermione's words. He had expected her to ignore him, but this? This was worse. She was acting completely indifferent to him. She was talking to him yes, but she wasn't treating him as someone who mattered to her. In fact, she was treating him the way he used to treat her.
"Granger, look I'm sorry. I'll leave," Draco said standing up. He wasn't in the mood to eat anyways, and sitting here with this robotic Hermione wasn't helping his appetite.
"About damn time," Ron muttered.
Draco's hands clenched into fists. Instead of beating the life out of Ron like he wanted to do, he decided to be the bigger man and walk away.
Hermione let out a deep breath as Draco left the kitchen. Being around him was a lot harder than she had expected, especially with him pleading with her to talk to him. She wanted to give in, damn right she did, but she knew she shouldn't. Yes, she should talk to him and listen to hear what he had to say, but she wasn't going to give into him right away. If he sincerely wanted to talk to her, then he could keep making an effort. If he gave up, well then that clearly showed how he felt.
Regardless of how much she was hurting, all she wanted to do was run back to Draco and feel his arms wrapped around her. But, she knew that she couldn't. She was sick of feeling like she was the only one who was actually serious about the relationship, the only one who was all in. Yes, when they were together things were amazing and Hermione had never felt happier with anyone, but that wasn't enough. She was sick of hiding their relationship, sick of him denying it when people asked him about it. If he was embarrassed to be with her out in public, then he didn't deserve to be with her when the two of them were alone.
No, she hadn't told Harry or Ron about Draco, but that wasn't because she hadn't wanted to. It was because she didn't know where the two of them stood. She loved him, bloody hell she knew she did, but what was the point in telling her two best friends that she was in love with someone, especially if he didn't return the feelings? She would look like a complete fool. As it turned out, she still ended up looking like a fool in front of everyone she cared about, as her little display out in the yard had made it obvious that Draco and her had been more than friends, at least to her.
She had been waiting for the right time to tell her friends about her newfound feelings towards her old worst enemy. She was waiting until she was sure that Draco had felt something even remotely close to what she did, before she dropped the bomb on her friends. She knew that it was going to be a shock, especially to Ron, whom she knew wouldn't take it well regardless. She knew that Harry was the more understanding of her best friends, but she wanted to make sure that it was real before convincing them that she wasn't crazy, that she was actually in love with Draco bloody Malfoy of all people.
However, things never really turn out the way you plan for them to, which is why she found herself in this situation. Harry had surprised her when he came to her to talk to her about it. He had called her out on being in love with Draco, and he hadn't even been mad when she had confessed that she was. Hermione always known that Harry was an understanding person, but for him to sit there and talk to her about what transpired between Draco and herself, and actually want to talk her through it all so he could grasp a better understanding of the entire situation, really showed her how mature and grown up Harry had become throughout the years. It also showed her just how much he loved and trusted her.
Hermione had always known that Ron would be the one who would be the most difficult, and that had proved true also. She loved him as her best friend, but she knew that there were things that she couldn't talk to him about. Ever since the two of them had broken up for good, Hermione had felt that their friendship had also taken a toll. He was still one of her best friends, but she trusted Harry more.
She looked up, and saw that Harry was studying her closely, trying to determine how she was feeling. Whereas Ron, now that Draco was gone, was busy shoveling food into his mouth oblivious to everyone and everything around him. Not once had he asked her if she was okay. In fact, she was surprised that he hadn't even questioned her about what was going on between Draco and herself. That was the thing with Ron, if he didn't want to believe something then he would just ignore it completely instead of facing the facts, even if they were right in front of him.
Hermione felt herself getting angry and annoyed again, this time at Ron. He was supposed to be her best friend, yet he hadn't even checked on her to see how she was doing. Yes, he had sat beside her and pretty much got rid of Draco, but that was more of a possession thing. It was for her benefit yes, but more for his. He liked to exert his power, he always had.
Then there was Harry, who had sat a few seats across from her, and was now looking at her trying to determine whether or not she was okay. There was a reason why her and Harry never fought, and her and Ron did.
Draco had ended up back in his room after his confrontation with Hermione at the dinner table. Seeing Hermione like that really stirred something within him. Hermione wasn't that kind of person, and he hated seeing her like that. He knew that she was acting that way because of him, and it killed him. He hated seeing her so cold and emotionless. Hermione was always radiant and full of energy, wearing her heart on her sleeve and a bright smile on her face. That's what he loved about her. That she was so caring and open with people. He knew that she was acting this way because of him, but he didn't know how he was going to fix things if she just ignored it all.
He had seen a momentary lapse in her façade, which gave him hope. Even though she was acting indifferent to him, that little spark of emotion that had flickered in her eyes showed him that she cared more than she was letting on. He knew that she was stubborn, and that he was really going to have to work at apologizing and getting her to talk to him if he was going to make things right between them. Had anyone told him a few months ago that he was going to be staying at the Burrow, in love with Hermione Granger, and then having to win her over again, he would have laughed in their face at the hysteria of it. Now however, he didn't find the situation funny at all.
The next couple days, Draco kept reaching out to Hermione, apologizing to her whenever he had a moment alone with her, and asking to talk to her whenever the opportunity would arise. He could see that she was slowly breaking, and that she would eventually come around to talking to him, which is why he kept it all up. He had never tried this hard for something in his life, and he refused to back down now. He looked at a calendar that was in the kitchen and realized that they had a few days until they were returning back to Hogwarts. Draco felt his heart race in anticipation. There would be nothing standing in his way when they got back to the school, no way that she could avoid him forever. The two of them shared a dorm, and were bound to run into each other eventually. This mere thought kept him going vigorously.
There were two nights left until they were returning back to the school, and Draco couldn't wait. He had been counting down the days until their return to school immediately after he had looked at the calendar in the Weasley's kitchen. He looked over at the clock on his nightstand and saw that it was 1am. Normally, he would be annoyed that he couldn't sleep, but right now he was too nervous and wired about returning back to the school, that sleep was the last thing on his mind. He needed to make sure that he didn't screw up again, and was constantly thinking things over in his mind that he was going to say to her.
Draco had ran into her in the hallway earlier that day as she was making her way down to dinner, and had blurted out that there was only a few days left in the holidays, and that soon they would be back to sharing a dorm. She had nodded, telling him that she had realized that. He had then once again asked for her forgiveness, and a chance to explain himself, and he was surprised when she had agreed to hear him out, but when they were back at school. He had agreed immediately, thanking her for allowing him the chance. He had told her he knew how much he had hurt her, and he was thankful that she was going to hear him out, and he promised her she would not regret it.
She had finally caved and agreed to talk to him when they got back to the school, when they were away from everyone else and were able to focus solely on them, and not have distractions such as Ron swooping in to "save the day" every chance that he got.
Draco threw off his covers, and decided to go downstairs and see if Mrs. Weasley had any leftovers in the fridge. His appetite had left him these past few days, and was now catching up to him. He tiptoed down the hallway, not wanting to wake anyone up, and made his way to the kitchen. He opened the door and turned on the lights, and made his way over to the fridge.
Draco sighed as he looked at the leftover ham that was for dinner that night. He took it out of the fridge, and placed it on the countertop. He started looking around the kitchen, trying to find a way to eat this delicious ham that he had found.
"There's bread in the cabinet beside the fridge."
Draco whipped around, his wand raised.
Harry stood in the kitchen doorway, his hands raised in front of him in surrender.
Draco lowered his wand and shoved it into his pocket. "Don't you know not to sneak up on people Potter?"
Harry strode past him, heading to the cabinet that held the bread, and grabbed the loaf, placing it on the counter beside the ham.
"Didn't realize you scared so easily Malfoy."
"I wasn't exactly expecting anyone else to be up at this time of night," Draco stated.
Harry grabbed two slices of bread out, and handed them to Draco, which he took, and then grabbed two slices for himself. He put the loaf back in the cabinet before opening the fridge.
"Mustard or Mayonnaise?"
"What?" Draco asked confused.
"For your sandwich Malfoy."
"Oh. Both. Is there any cheese?"
Harry came back carrying the mustard, mayonnaise, and two slices of cheddar cheese. He piled it all onto the counter, and started making his sandwich. Draco noted that Harry used mayonnaise on his sandwich.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?" Draco asked after a bite of his sandwich.
"Do you love her?"
Draco choked on the piece of sandwich in his mouth. Harry offered him a glass of water, which he accepted. He took a few swigs from it and then looked at Harry.
"What?"
"Hermione. Do you love her?"
"I don't see how that's any of your-"
"I'm not here to play games with you Malfoy, nor am I going to sit back and watch while you play games with Hermione. I understand that she sees something in you, and that you have saved her life on multiple occasions, which I am thankful for, but I am not going to stand there and watch as she gets hurt again. She's an amazing girl with a huge heart, and she deserves someone who will love her wholeheartedly and treat her the way she deserves to be treated. Now I'm not saying that every relationship is perfect or without their fights, but I don't want to watch her waste her time again with someone who is just going to leave her. So I'm asking you again Malfoy, do you or do you not love Hermione?"
Draco studied Harry and realized that there was no way he could bullshit his way out of this one. And if he was being honest, Draco didn't know if he wanted to. Hermione meant a lot to him, and he knew how much her friends meant to her, and it was clear with the way Potter was staring at him intently right now that the wrong answer could make or break what him and Hermione had together permanently.
"I do."
Harry nodded his head, as if he was expecting the answer.
"So where does that leave us Potter?" Draco asked.
"It leaves us at a standstill. I'm not saying that I trust you, because I don't. Which I don't think anyone can blame me for considering everything that has happened between us throughout the years. However, I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if you are serious about being with Hermione, which I am assuming you are since you just admitted to me of all people that you are in love with her. That doesn't mean that I'm giving you a free pass for all of the stuff that you have put us all through, but it means that I am willing to try and put it behind us as long as you treat Hermione the way she deserves to be treated, and you stop hurting her. With that being said, Hermione is a proud individual, and keeping whatever it is that is happening between the two of you a secret will only drive her further and further away. She had a shitty relationship with Ron, she doesn't deserve another one like that. So, if you are serious about her, you need to be open about being with her. She was willing to give you a chance regardless of everything you put her through in the past, along with mine and Ron's feelings about you, which only further shows me how much she cares about you. She went behind Ron's back and mine, in order to try and figure things out with you, knowing that our reaction wouldn't be one of pure joy. Hermione is not a selfish individual, and I know she kept your relationship a secret more than likely for your behalf, as well as Ron's and mine. So you need to figure out whether you're in or out, no more games."
"As much as I hate to admit this to you, and I swear to god I will hex your ass if you repeat this to anyone, but I do truly care for her. I can't explain how it happened or why, it just did. I'm not asking for you to forgive me for everything that I did in the past, I was a complete asshole and I know it. Blaise has been telling me it for years but I was always too proud and stubborn to admit it. But, Hermione made me open my eyes and see that things aren't so black and white. Even though her and I were supposed to be worst enemies, she showed me concern and care, something that even my own family and friends, besides Blaise, never did. At first it annoyed me, but then I realized what a good person she was, and I started enjoying her care and concern, and enjoying her company. And now look where it's got us all. I'm in love with Hermione bloody Granger, best friends with the likes of you."
"Instead of standing here and pouring your heart out to me, you should be saying these things to Hermione."
"I've been trying to talk to her, but it's bloody impossible with Weasley breathing down her neck every fucking second."
"I can try and distract Ron for a while if you want."
Draco arched an eyebrow. "Are you offering to help me Potter?"
"I guess I am. It's funny the things you will do for the people that you care about."
"You can say that again," Draco stated.
"So, tomorrow do you want me to come up with something to get Ron away from Hermione?"
"Well, she actually agreed to talk to me once we get back to the school…"
"It isn't going to make talking about your feelings any easier the longer you wait."
Draco rolled his eyes. "I know that. I just prefer not to be sucker punched or hexed against my will."
"I'll talk to Ginny, and me and her will figure something out. But I'm warning you Malfoy, this is your last chance. Make things right with her, or I'm not going to be as understanding about things like I am now."
"Alright, alright."
"Good."
The two of them finished up their sandwiches, a mutual understanding formed between the two of them. And, even though neither of them would admit it, they hated each other less after talking. Draco now understood Harry and where he was coming from, and realized that all these years Harry had been standing up for the people that he cared about, that it wasn't because he specifically chose Draco to hate. That Draco had given him reasons time and time again to not want to be acquaintances or friends of any type. And honestly, Draco couldn't blame him. He had been a complete asshole to all three of them all through the years, ever since Harry had rejected his handshake on the stairs that one day so many years ago. He had taken it as a person attack against himself, not to mention that he had been embarrassed to be rejected by the kid that everyone in the world was talking about in front of the entire school.
Draco was about to say something else to Harry, but the kitchen door slammed open, and Ginny came tumbling through, her sleep clothes tattered and torn, and her hair a complete and utter disaster.
"Ginny!" Harry exclaimed as he ran over to her, engulfing her in his arms. "What happened?"
"Hermione," Ginny said.
Draco took off out the kitchen door, taking the stairs two at a time. He ran into the room that Hermione and Ginny shared, and found that it was a disaster. The tables and dressers were thrown all about the room, clothes and books covered the floor. He scanned the room, but in his heart he had already known the truth, that she was gone.
"What's going on out here?!" Mrs. Weasley asked as she stumbled down the hallway.
Draco turned and headed back down the stairs, hearing Mrs. Weasley's exclamations as she took in the state of her daughters room. He found Harry and Ginny still in the kitchen.
He was about to ask what happened and where Hermione was, until he heard someone barreling through the kitchen, and next thing he knew he was up in the air.
"WHERE THE FUCK IS SHE MALFOY?" Ron snarled angrily, his face red.
"I don't know," Draco snapped.
The rest of the Weasley family crowded into the kitchen, watching the scene before them, not knowing what to do.
"BULLSHIT!"
"Ron," Harry started.
"WHERE THE FUCK IS SHE!"
"I DON'T KNOW!" Draco snapped angrily. He had had enough, he raised his palm, and swiped it through the air, breaking the levitating spell Ron had used on Draco. Draco landed back on his feet, and his palm still out before him threw it up in the air, hoisting Ron up against the ceiling, his eyes glinting dangerously.
"How did he-"
"What the-"
"That's way beyond any wandless magic I have learned-"
"ENOUGH!" Molly snapped.
Draco flinched, which broke his concentration, and Ron came tumbling down.
Ron started charging at Draco, and Ginny threw out her wand, using a shielding spell to protect Draco.
Ron turned his attention towards her, his face showing unmasked rage.
"What the fuck are you doing Ginny?" Ron snapped.
"Calm down Ron," Ginny stated.
"Do not tell me to calm down! Hermione is missing and it's all his fault, and here you are protecting him? What the fuck is wrong with you? What, are you a Death Eater now too and working together with him?"
"RON!" Molly exclaimed.
Ginny waved her wand, and Ron was thrown back against the wall with a loud bang.
She took a step forward towards Ron, her face betraying her anger, her eyes narrowed dangerously at her brother.
"How dare you accuse me of such things," She snapped dangerously. "Maybe if you got your head out of your ass for ONE FUCKING MINUTE you'd be able to figure out what happened. But NO. You can't get over your hate for Malfoy, who by the way HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. Excuse me of being a Death Eater or helping to get one of my best friends kidnapped again and I will seriously hurt you."
"Ginny!" Molly exclaimed.
"No mother, I will not sit here and baby him. Ron needs to grow the fuck up and listen when people say things. Instead of storming in here trying to be the hero for someone, who by the way DOES NOT LOVE YOU, things could have went differently. Nobody stands there and blames me for being a part of my best friends capture, or accuses me of being a Death Eater!"
"Ginny, that's enough," Molly stated.
"No, it's not. You need to get over the fact that Hermione doesn't want you and has moved on. And yes, it was to Malfoy, but you know what, he was there for her when you weren't. You CHEATED on her, what did you expect her to do? Sit around and wait for you? If you did then you are a complete and total idiot. You've been best friends with Hermione longer than I have and you should know that she would never put up with that shit, or allow herself to be mistreated in such a way. You are lucky she decided to put her feelings aside and be friends with you still. You messed up and you need to accept and realize that."
"But…. But it's Malfoy," Ron said softly, defeated. "They hate each other."
"As you and everyone else in this kitchen know, that is not true."
"I just, I don't get it…"
"Well it's not up for you to "get" or understand. It's up to Hermione and Malfoy."
Ron mumbled something under his breath.
"And the sooner you realize that you and Hermione are going to be nothing more than friends, and that her and Malfoy actually truly care about one another the better. How hard do you think this whole thing has been for Hermione? Having to keep her feelings for someone a secret because she was afraid of what her two best friends would think. How do you think she felt the entire time, knowing that what she felt with Malfoy was something special, but also knowing that her two best friends wouldn't approve, you especially? If you were truly her best friend you would be happy for her, happy that she has finally gotten over having her heart broken, by you of all people, and is finally allowing herself to open up to someone else. Yes, that person happens to be someone that you don't like, but that doesn't matter. Who Hermione chooses to be with is none of your business. And if Malfoy is what makes her happy, then you need to accept that like I have, otherwise you are going to lose her as a friend," Ginny stated.
"I don't want to lose Hermione" Ron stated slowly.
"Then suck up your damn pride and allow Hermione to be happy."
"Look at that, Ginny all grown up. A mature young woman," Charlie stated proudly.
"Yeah, well one of us has to be mature," Ginny said winking at her brother.
"Now, are you going to get over yourself or what Ronald?" Ginny asked expectantly.
Ron stood up and wiped the dust off of his clothes. He walked over to Malfoy, and held out his hand.
Draco looked down at the hand Ron was offering, and wanted more than anything to deny it and shove him away, but Ron's entire family was looking at him expectantly, and he knew that he had to do it for Hermione's sake.
"As much as I hate to say this Malfoy, but I think that I owe you an apology."
"Don't worry about it Weasley," Draco stated, not wanting to get all sentimental with the bloke.
"No I'm serious. I let my feelings and anger at myself for messing things up with Hermione cloud my judgment. Even though I didn't want to notice, I did realize that you and Hermione had become closer, and that you weren't the same git that you used to be. But, I couldn't accept that. I couldn't allow myself to believe that you changed into a better person, that you were there for Hermione in her time of need and caring for her, when it should have been me. And no, I don't mean as a boyfriend," Ron said as Draco tensed. "I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that me, her supposed best friend hurt her so badly, and that her so called worst enemy was there for her picking up the broken pieces and caring for her like I should have been. I was too stubborn and proud to admit that the reason Hermione was turning around and that she was okay again, was because of you."
Draco stood there silently, not knowing what to say.
"Anyways, I guess what I am trying to say is, is that I am sorry. I was being a git and couldn't stand the fact that Hermione was happy because of someone else, especially someone who I had thought we all hated."
"It's fine," Draco said, not knowing what else to say.
"I'm not saying that we are going to be the best of friends, but I want you to know that I am going to try and understand and support yours and Hermione's being together. But if you hurt her, I can assure you that I will be the first person in line to kick your ass."
"Exactly as I expect," Draco stated, as he reached out and shook Ron's hand in a mutual understanding.
"Alright, this is all good and everything. Really, I am glad that you two put your differences aside and everything, but we're still missing the major problem here," Molly stated.
Draco scolded himself for forgetting what had gotten them all into this mess in the first place. Hermione, she was gone, and here they all were being emotional school girls trying to make amends while his girl was god knows where.
"Girl Weasley," Draco said acknowledging her.
"Ginny," Ginny corrected.
"Ginny, whatever. What happened?"
"Someone broke in while we were sleeping. I remember hearing someone mutter a silencing charm, and I woke up and saw a figure standing over Hermione's bed, and I screamed so she would wake up, and then I grabbed my wand and spells were being thrown everywhere. I tried everything I could to catch the son of a bitch, but he was too strong. And before I could do anything he was out the window with Hermione in his arms, and apparated out in the corn field."
"Who was it?" Draco asked angrily. "Did you see his face?"
"I did."
"Who was it?" Draco questioned.
Ginny looked him directly in the eyes, and at that moment he knew who she was going to say before the words even passed her lips.
"Your father."
