Draco couldn't sit still. He was currently pacing around the room, and had been for about the last hour. Patience wasn't one of his virtues, and he hated himself for telling everyone to wait until tomorrow until they went to rescue Hermione. The only reason he didn't take off right now, was because he knew it would be too obvious, and he wanted what was best for Hermione in the situation. Running after her as soon as she got captured was not the right tactic, and Draco knew it. It would be way too much of a coincidence, and that would cause questions that he did not want to answer in the lair of Voldemort and his followers. He let out a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. He knew he couldn't get all worked up, he needed to keep a level head. He needed to be able to think and process information accordingly. So, in that mindset, he walked over to his bed and lay down, closing his eyes and breathing deeply, keeping himself under control.
Harry on the other hand, was just finishing up his letter to Dumbledore. He re-read his letter, and deciding it would have to do, rolled it up.
"Hedwig!"
Hedwig flew down from her perch up near the rafters, hooting her appreciation for her master.
Harry smiled at his lifelong pal and scratched her head affectionately. She closed her eyes and leaned into her masters hand, and Harry couldn't help the love that flowed from him for this creature in front of him. She had been there for him through everything, and they loved one another unconditionally.
"I need you to take this to Dumbledore," Harry stated as he attached the letter to her leg. "And be safe."
Hedwig perched onto Harry's outstretched arm, and Harry walked over to the window and threw it open.
Hedwig hooted, and took off.
Harry watched Hedwig until she disappeared, and then went and lay down on his bed, knowing that it would take Hedwig a few hours to reach Hogwarts. He closed his eyes, trying to get some rest, knowing that it was pointless. But, he had told everyone else to try and relax, and he couldn't just go downstairs and not follow his own instructions.
Harry didn't know how long he lay there wide awake, but he couldn't lay there any longer. He got up and headed downstairs, and found all the Weasley's sitting in the kitchen.
"Couldn't sleep either?" Ron asked as Harry pulled out a chair and sat down.
"Not at all."
"Neither could we."
"Where's Malfoy?" Harry asked.
"I'm guessing he's still upstairs. I haven't seen him," Ron stated.
"I wonder how he's doing," Ginny said suddenly.
"What?"
"Well this can't exactly be easy for him. He finally admits his feelings for Hermione and then she ends up being kidnapped? Not to mention that his father is the one that kidnaps her."
Before anyone could respond, Dumbledore apparated into the kitchen.
"Sorry to pop in without warning Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, I hope you don't mind my intrusion."
"It's not an intrusion Albus, we were expecting you," Molly stated.
"I would like to know what happened. Harry?"
"Well, you'd be best to ask Ginny since she was in the room with Hermione when she was captured."
"Alright, Miss. Weasley."
"Well we were sleeping, and then I remember hearing something and I woke up and saw a dark figure in the room. I tried to fend him off, but he disappeared with Hermione before I could really do anything."
"Did you get a look at his face?" Dumbledore asked.
"I didn't need to, I knew who it was without looking at his face. The Malfoy platinum blonde hair isn't a popular trait."
"And Draco is aware that it was his father who kidnapped Miss. Granger?"
"He is."
"And where is the young Mr. Malfoy right now?" Dumbledore asked.
"Upstairs."
"And you're certain of this? People tend to act out irrationally in dire situations such as these, especially when it concerns a loved one."
"Malfoy came up with the entire plan of how we are going to get Hermione back, I don't think he would be stupid enough to try and cross us after making us promise not to go straight after her like we all want to do," Ginny stated.
"Very well, I trust that he will make a wise decision."
"Dumbledore sir, have you contacted-"
Draco heard a loud crash come from downstairs and he froze for a second, then took off running. He was not going to let anything happen to anyone in the house if it was the last thing he did. He ran down the stairs two at a time, and threw open the kitchen door with a loud bang, his wand at the ready.
He looked around wildly, looking for what had caused the commotion and saw someone with hot pink hair sprawled out on the floor, a mess of different dishes surrounding her. His eyes scanned the rest of the room, and he saw all the Weasley's along with Harry and Dumbledore present in the room, the latter whom was looking at him, a small smile on his face.
"Nice of you to come and join us Draco," Dumbledore said.
"Well, I guess that answers my question as to whether or not you contacted anyone," Harry stated amused as he held out his hand to the lady who was still sprawled out on the floor. "Hey Tonks!"
"Thanks Harry," Tonks said taking his hand, pulling herself up off of the ground. "Sorry Mrs. Weasley, I'm awfully clumsy sometimes."
Draco looked at the lady more closely. Tonks… It sounded familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
"Draco, I would like you to meet Nymphadora Tonks, your cousin on your mothers side. Nymphadora, this is Draco."
Tonks looked over at Draco cautiously.
"You're a spitting image of your father when he was your age," she said finally.
Draco bit back a nasty response, and instead said, "Unfortunately I have no control over that."
Tonks continued to study him before shooting him a small smirk. "Call me Nymphadora and it will be the last thing you'll ever do. I go by Tonks."
"Duly noted."
"Albus, are you sure that we can trust him?" Tonks asked referring to Draco.
Draco refrained from rolling his eyes.
"I can assure you that Mr. Malfoy is of no worries to you, and I trust him completely."
"You do know who his parents are, do you not?" Tonks questioned.
"I'm standing right here and can hear you.." Draco snapped.
"I am aware that you are there Draco, but excuse me for having problems trusting someone of your upbringing and family background. As you are well aware, I was shunned from our 'family' for who I chose to associate myself with, and as Lucius and Narcissa's only child, and prized one at that, I find it hard to believe that you're standing here in front of me with no ulterior motives."
Draco saw Ron smirk at Tonks and he wanted to punch him in the face.
"I was just as leery about the whole thing at first like you were," Harry stated stepping in front of Draco, much this his surprise, "but I am standing here in front of you right now saying that I too trust Malfoy, especially when it concerns Hermione."
"Hermione? What…."
Tonks looked at back and forth between Draco and Harry, and then she burst out laughing.
"Oh this is priceless."
"What's priceless?" Ginny questioned.
"Looks like I'm not the only one to fall in love with people we aren't supposed to. Is that why you're here? Did your family shun you too?"
"Not exactly."
"They don't know, do they?" Tonks asked.
"Not exactly."
Tonks laughed again. "Well that is going to make for one interesting conversation, one that I wish I was present to see. Serves them right you know, for shunning me for choosing Remus, and now their own son is doing the exact same thing I did."
"Tonks.."
"Sorry," Tonks said apologetically. "That really was insensitive of me, but as you can tell I'm still a bit bitter about the entire situation."
"I remember," Draco stated suddenly.
"What?"
"I remember the day it happened, your choosing love over your family. Your mom was pissed."
"Well of course she was, she is very strict in her ways, as I am sure you know considering our parents beliefs are one in the same."
"I specifically remember that day because I remember thinking to myself that you were crazy for choosing the love of a, and excuse me for saying this now, a half breed over your family and inheritance that comes with it. I couldn't understand how a Pureblood could even look at someone like that as their equal, or worse yet choose to marry one."
"Yes, well, I choose happiness and love over a life of despair, and I don't regret my decision for a second, and would do it all over again."
"And I can honestly say that I don't blame you for it. Before, I only knew of the life that our families drew out for us, I didn't realize that there was another way. I was taught that there was no such thing as love, that you marry for power, and that anyone without a pure blood line was beneath me. So I came to school with those thoughts planted in my head, and honestly believed them for as long as I can remember. Imagine my disappointment and anger when I went to school and came second best to that of a Muggleborn, someone my father had always drilled into my head was worthless and beneath me. The only thing I was ever better at her at was flying, which was nothing when you think about it. When father found out, he was absolutely furious, and you can imagine the kind of punishments I used to receive. So, I ended up resenting Granger even more, and promised myself that I would make her life a living hell, taking out all the anger and disappointment my father bestowed on me, on her and her friends. Didn't help that she befriended Potter, the boy that I was also brought up to hate, and Weasley, whom, no offense, I always found utterly annoying and a nuisance. And then this year, things started happening and I ended up having to share my Heads dorm with the one girl I resented more than anything, and I started seeing her in a different light. She treated me as her equal, even when I was treating her like absolute shit. And that's when I realized, that even though I had been a complete git to this girl all through our years at school, she was a better person than me. She was able to be civil towards me, and show me a kindness that I had never experienced or been victim to in my entire life, and it had come from the one person that I least deserved it from. Although it took some pushing from my best friend, I openly realized that what I had been brought up to believe was absolute bullshit, and now here I stand in front of all you, fighting for the same side, something that I never dreamed would ever happen, and it's all thanks to one girl. One girl who changed not only me, but my entire life, and made me realize that there is more to life than what I had been brought up to believe, and that there is such a thing as love."
Draco had been looking at Tonks the entire time, and had lost himself in his declaration. He realized what he had just said in front of everyone, and he looked around quickly to see everyone staring at him, a few with their mouths hanging open, others amused, and a few happy.
He caught Dumbledore patting his eye with a handkerchief and he looked down, avoiding eye contact.
Tonks walked over to Draco and put an arm around his shoulder.
"I'm so proud of you," she said smiling. "I know how hard it is to be in your position, and it's not going to be easy when your parents find out, so if you need anyone to talk to about the whole thing, I'm here for you."
Draco looked over at Tonks, a shocked look on his face.
"Really?"
"Of course."
"Why? I don't deserve it. I was never there for you when it happened, and I shunned you along with my family."
"You were young, you didn't know any better. And besides, I can't blame you for what happened. But what I can do is be there for you when the same thing happens to you."
"Wow, well thank you. That's extremely kind of you."
"I'm just glad to see that you have chosen your own path in life instead of the one that your family chose for you. I just wish that more people were like you and me, the world would be a better place."
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, my best friend Blaise who is a Pureblood is also best friends with Granger"
"Blaise.. as in Blaise Zabini?"
"Yes ma'am."
"I heard about that through the grapevine, that the Zabini's son turned on his family."
"That would be him."
"Well good for both of you!"
"If only everyone was as happy about us betraying our families as you are."
"Who cares what everyone else thinks. As long as you are happy, that's all that matters."
"I'm happy that you've decided to stop being a git," Ginny stated.
Draco smirked and rolled his eyes, "Thanks Weaslette."
"You're welcome!"
"See, there you go. Just give people time and they will come around."
"I am both proud and happy that you have decided to see the error of your families ways," Dumbledore said.
Draco looked over at Dumbledore.
"I always saw the potential in you. I knew that there was a light side to you underneath that dark exterior that your father bred into you. I hoped that Miss. Granger would somehow help you see that light when I convinced her to move into your dorm, and I am happy to see that it worked."
Draco quirked an eyebrow. "So you're the reason Granger moved into my dorm room?"
Dumbledore's eyes were twinkling, and Draco couldn't help but laugh.
"I told you the man sees everything," Ron stated.
"You would not be incorrect Mr. Weasley," Dumbledore said.
"How do you even have time to play matchmaker on top of everything else that you have going on?" Ron asked.
"Because there is always time for love Mr. Weasley."
"So are you saying that you knew that Hermione and Malfoy would fall in love?" Ron asked appalled.
"I must say that I did see the potential of it happening, but that both sides needed a push, as they aren't all that different from one another when it comes down to it."
"Huh."
"Anyways, now that we have all of that sorted out it is time to deal with the problem on hand. Harry, I came as soon as I got your letter, and made sure to contact the members from the Order, who should all be showing up soon I suspect."
"I had a few other people in mind that I would like to contact if that is alright with you sir," Harry stated.
"Do what you feel you must."
"Malfoy, can you contact Zabini and ask him to come to the Burrow, we will inform him of everything that happened once he gets here, I don't any information getting into the wrong hands."
"I sent a patronus to Blaise before I came down here, he should be here any-"
There was a loud pop, and Blaise apparated into the kitchen.
"I'm here Drake, now what's going on?"
"Hello Mr. Zabini, and thanks for joining us. We will inform you of everything as soon as everyone else gets here," Dumbledore stated.
Blaise looked around the room and nodded.
After Neville Longbottom apparated into the room, Harry looked over at Dumbledore and nodded.
"Now, I am sure that all of you are wondering why you have been summoned here today, as it is Christmas, but there are matters that need to be discussed. Last night, Miss Granger was kidnapped by one of the Death Eaters."
There were gasps around the room.
"We know where Miss Granger has been taken to, and Mr. Malfoy has come up with a plan as to how we are going to save her, so I would appreciate if you all give him your full undivided attention and listen."
"Why are we listening to him?" Neville asked.
"I had a feeling that this was going to be asked, so I am going to address all of your concerns on this matter right now, so listen carefully. Mr. Malfoy is now fighting on our side, and is here to help. I trust him fully, and I expect all of you to trust him too. If any of you has a problem with this, then I will not blame you for wanting to leave. This is your opportunity."
Dumbledore looked around the room, waiting.
"Very good. I am glad that all of you have decided to stay. Now, if you would please listen to what he has planned."
"Like I told Potter and the Weasley's yesterday, it would have looked too obvious if I showed up at home right after Grangers kidnapping, so we all decided to wait until today to take action, as hard as it was. I am going to apparate near my manor and act as though I am home for Christmas. I show up for Christmas at my house every year, so this shouldn't be overly obvious and it will seem natural. We already know why Granger has been captured, because Voldemort knows that Potter would be coming after her. What he doesn't know is that I am working on your side, and that I will be assisting you all entry to the manor. There are wards up all over the property, different spells that are triggered to go off when an unwanted guests come within a certain proximity of the perimeters, so I will be disabling these to allow all of you access without alerting the people inside of your presence. Once I figure out what time is best to drop the wards, I will be communicating with Potter to let you all know when it is safe to apparate onto the property. If you do not hear from me at all, then you will know that something has happened, and you are free to charge the manor as you wish."
"And how do we know that this isn't a set up?"
"You'll just have to trust me," Draco stated.
"Why do you even care what happens to Hermione?" Neville questioned.
"Because I am in love with her," Draco said, looking directly at him.
"You believe this Harry?" Neville asked.
"As unbelievable as it sounds, I do Neville."
Neville sized Draco up, and then nodded at Harry.
Draco rolled his eyes.
"Does everybody understand the plan?" Dumbledore asked looking around at everyone they gathered for the final battle. "Do we have any questions?"
When nobody said anything, Dumbledore nodded. "Well, that's that. Mr. Malfoy, Mr. Potter if you would please come with me for a second in the hallway."
Draco followed Harry and Dumbledore into the hallway.
"Now, Mr. Malfoy, I want to tell you how much I appreciate what you are planning on doing. I realize the danger that you are putting yourself in, and I want you to know that I am proud of you for what you are doing. Now Harry, I know you are going to be very impatient with this whole thing, but you must wait until you get the okay from Mr. Malfoy in order to ensure as much safety for everyone as possible."
"I understand sir," Harry stated.
"Mr. Malfoy, is there anything you need before you leave?"
"No."
"Alright. Well, then I wish you good luck. We will all be here awaiting your okay to leave," Dumbledore said as he made his way back into the kitchen.
"Malfoy," Harry said, getting Draco's attention.
"Yes Potter?"
"Be careful."
Draco quirked an eyebrow. "Don't get all sentimental on me there Potter. I will not hug you goodbye."
Harry laughed. "Don't worry Malfoy, I would never hug you, even if you were the last person on this earth."
"Glad to know the feeling is mutual."
"But seriously, do be careful Malfoy. I know how much you mean to Hermione, and I know she would be devastated if anything happened to you. You're risking your life in order to help save hers, and for that you have earned my respect."
"It's the least I can do," Draco said. "Well, I guess I should go and inform everybody that I'm leaving."
Harry nodded, and followed Draco back into the kitchen.
Everyone turned to look at them.
"Alright, well I'm heading over to the manor now. I will try and get as much information as I can while I'm over there and will be contacting Potter as soon as I know when the best time to drop the barriers is."
"Be safe," Ginny stated suddenly.
Draco looked over at Ginny and smirked. "I'll be fine Weaslette."
"Make sure you are, for Hermione's sake."
"I will."
"I'll walk you out mate," Blaise said coming up beside Draco.
Draco nodded, and the two of them made their way out of the kitchen, and into the backyard.
"You could have let me know that Hermione was kidnapped in your patronus you sent you git."
"I didn't want to take the chance of somebody else hearing the message."
"Do you know who took her?"
Draco nodded.
"Who Drake?"
"My father."
Blaise stopped walking. "Are you sure?"
"Ginny said she saw the blonde hair, and we both know that my hair colour isn't exactly popular."
"You're going off of a hair colour?"
"It's not just that. I just know it was him. I'm surprised I didn't figure it out sooner. It's been him going after her this entire time. That's how he knew about my powers, not a lot of people know. And honestly, I can feel that it's true."
"Drake, I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault."
"And it's not yours either, so don't blame yourself for what has happened. He would have went after Hermione if you weren't involved with her mate."
Draco let out a deep breath. "I know, but that doesn't make it any easier. I swear if he or any of them laid a hand on her.."
"Drake, you need to keep it together for her sake. Losing your shit when you see her or hear about something involving her is going to get both of you in more trouble then you're already in. You need to stay calm and level headed. Be the old you, the one who doesn't show emotions. Mask it all, you've had a lot of practice over the years mate, I know you can do it."
"Thanks."
"You can do this Drake, just keep your head in the game."
Draco nodded. He kept walking, leaving Blaise behind him.
"Oh, and mate!" Blaise exclaimed, making Draco stop and turn around.
"Good luck."
Blaise watched as his best friend disappeared in front of him. He knew that Draco was freaking out inside, he had a lot riding on his shoulders. But, Blaise also knew that Draco was one of the best when it came to masking his emotions, so he hoped that Draco could pull out the old him and pretend indifference to the whole situation. He was going to have to pretend to hate Hermione if he wanted to keep her safe. Blaise knew that Draco knew this, and that it was going to be extremely hard for his best friend to do. He just hoped Hermione understood that it was all a part of an act to keep her safe, and that whatever Draco said or how he acted, was just that, an act.
Blaise remained standing outside for a few minutes with his thoughts, before he headed back inside.
Draco felt the familiar sensation of apparition as he appeared just down the street from his home. He could have apparated right onto the property he supposed, but he needed the time to psyche himself up for what he was about to do.
As Draco made his way closer to his house, he felt his heart rate quicken. He composed his face, feeling the familiarity of his usual look of boredom and indifference as he prepared himself. Before he knew it, he was walking up the long driveway to the iron gates that kept unwanted guests off of the property.
He walked up to the gates, and was met by two Death Eaters who were acting as security guards.
"Good morning," Draco said nodding at them both.
"Mr. Malfoy," they greeted as they opened the gates to allow him access.
Draco kept walking, not looking back. So far so good. He threw open the doors of his home, and walked inside.
"Cissy, look who decided to grace us with his presence for the holidays!"
Draco tried not to cringe at his aunt as she made her way over to him lovingly.
"Hello Bellatrix," Draco said pleasantly.
"Always so formal."
"As I have taught him to be," Lucius said as he stepped out of the shadows.
"Father," Draco said nodding his head in his dad's direction, trying to keep his face from betraying the anger and disgust he felt upon being in his presence.
"I was not aware that you were to be joining us today," Lucius stated as he walked forwards.
"I always make it home for Christmas father," Draco stated.
"I am so glad you made it," Narcissa said as she engulfed Draco in a hug.
"You know I wouldn't miss it mother," Draco stated.
"As it happens, I was able to get you a Christmas present that I am certain that you are going to enjoy," Lucius said, excitement etching its way into his voice.
Draco felt unease in his stomach, but answered as expected. "What is it?"
"Well if I told you then that would be running the surprise. Better than telling you what it is, why don't I show you? Follow me."
Bellatrix cackled as Draco followed his father. His stomach dropped as his dad opened the door to the basement that led to the cellar.
"Just through here Draco," Lucius stated as he grabbed the keys for the cells out of his pocket.
Draco got a sick feeling in his stomach, and knew what was coming before it even happened.
"I've been working on this project for a while now, and I can finally say that I have succeeded."
"What project?" Draco asked, trying to seem interested but not let his anger show.
"The one that the Dark Lord assigned me at the beginning of the year."
"What was it?"
Lucius approached a cell and stuck the key in the lock. "Why don't you go in and see for yourself?"
Draco walked into the damp dark cell, and felt his heart racing in his chest. He made sure to keep his breathing even, and his face emotionless as he approached the lump in the corner that he knew before even getting a good look at her face.
"Draco?" Hermione croaked.
"Do not use his first name as though it is your right!" Lucius spat angrily as he raised his wand.
"Father? What is this?" Draco asked trying to catch his father's attention.
Lucius looked over at his son, and lowered his wand. "This is your Christmas present, to do with it as you wish."
"To do with it as I wish?" Draco questioned.
"Yes Draco, to do what you wish."
"But she's a Mudblood," Draco stated, making sure to hiss out the last word in disgust.
"You are aware of who that is, are you not?" Lucius asked studying his son.
"Of course I know who it is father."
"She is the Mudblood who has been beating you at school ever since you started, and the best friend of Potter. I thought you would be a little bit more appreciative of my gift for you."
"I do appreciate the gift father," Draco stated.
"I thought you would enjoy causing her pain, especially after all the embarrassment that she has caused you. All the embarrassment that she caused for the Malfoy name. It is time to extract revenge Draco."
Draco looked over at Hermione, who was looking at him pleadingly.
I'm sorry Draco mouthed at Hermione before turning back to his father, his face set in a hard line.
"You're right," Draco stated looking at his father. He grabbed his wand and pointed it at Hermione, his eyes hard, his face displaying hatred that his father would expect was directed towards Hermione, but was actually intended for him.
"Draco please," Hermione pleaded her voice shaking. Her eyes however, were filled with a fierce fire and understanding, and Draco knew that Hermione was aware that he was acting. He felt his love for her flow through his veins at how strong this woman was in front of him. Here she was, playing the part just as he was, even though she knew that he was going to have to cause her pain in order to satisfy his father.
"Listen to how pathetic she is, begging for you to spare her, like her life even matters, as if she is your equal. Hex her Draco," Lucius snapped.
Draco locked his eyes with Hermione's, hoping that they were displaying the love and emotion that his face was void of. He took a deep breath.
"Crucio," Draco snapped, and he felt his heart break.
