Draco hated his father. Absolutely despised him. He couldn't believe that at one point in his life he had wished to grow up to be just like him. His father was not a man, he was a coward. A coward who thought tormenting muggleborns was fun. There was nothing fun about tormenting someone who had no way of defending themselves, no way of fighting back. Yes, Hermione had made him mad and angry over the years, but that was only because his father had such high expectations of him and believed that coming second best was not acceptable in anything, and he was punished for it. Even back when he did still hate Hermione, he didn't think he would have ever been able to use an unforgiveable curse on her. He enjoyed tormenting her and pissing her off, yes. But intentionally hurting her like he was now, for pleasure according to his father, was not something Draco had ever really been into. Especially when it came to hurting girls. That was something that him and his father never agreed on.
Draco knew that his father was enjoying the display that he was creating, and he had to do everything in his power not to turn and use the curse on him instead. He made himself think about how what he was doing was going to be saving Hermione's life, and that he had a part to play in the whole thing. If he messed it up now, then there was no telling what would happen.
"Okay, that's enough," Lucius stated finally.
Draco felt relief come over his whole body, but when he turned to face his father, his face was a hard mask.
"Now, did that not make you feel so much better? Causing her to hurt for what she's done to you over all of these years?"
"You're right father, I do feel better."
Lucius smirked. "I knew you would. Here," he said as he grabbed the keys out of his pocket.
"What's that for?"
"Well, this is a gift for you after all, but it also has to do with a master plan for the Dark Lord. We know that by capturing her, Potter will not be too far behind when it comes to saving her. So, I want you to keep an eye on her, make sure that no funny business is happening down here. And also make sure that Potter doesn't somehow get past the security measures that we have and rescues her. If he does, it will be your head Draco, not mine."
"So you want me to play babysitter?" Draco asked making sure to lace his words with disgust.
"If that's how you want to interpret what I said to you, then yes."
"You do realize that I am heading back to school tomorrow right?"
"Exactly. Which means that Potter will be coming here sometime today in order to get his friend back. So stay alert, and if you see or hear anything you deem as suspicious, make sure to notify me immediately. We cannot screw this up Draco, this is our chance."
"Yes father. But you do realize that Potter has the Order on his side, they probably know ways to get around your security measures," Draco said trying to pry information out of his father.
"Which is why we made sure to be efficient when it came to our security. We have used the best dark magic that we could find in order to protect the perimeters, and have our men guarding every entrance onto the property. If they come anywhere near the manor, we will know."
"Protect the perimeters? How?"
"Not only will alarms be set off when anyone who is not part of this family or one of the Dark Lords men come onto the property, but there are also some spells set up that will permanently damage or even potentially kill those who pass over a certain distance."
"Then how do you expect to be able to fight Potter when he comes?" Draco questioned.
"Oh, the Dark Lord has that one figured out," Lucius said proudly. "He has made sure to modify all of the spells used around the manor to allow him access. All of the Death Eaters are aware of this, and are not to harm Potter."
"So it's a trap."
"Of course it is. Potter is the only one that the Dark Lord is interested in."
"What are we going to do with her once Potter is captured?" Draco asked nodding in Hermione's direction.
"She won't be of any use to us anymore, so that will be up to the Dark Lord and what he decides to do with her. Now, enough questions. If you need anything I will be in my office. Do not disturb me unless it is news about Potter."
Draco watched as Lucius made his way back up the stairs, leaving him alone with Hermione in the dungeon.
Draco walked over to Hermione, and gently placed his hand on her face.
"Granger, I am so sorry."
Hermione shifted and opened her eyes. "I'm okay."
"I didn't want to do anything to hurt you, I didn't have a choice I needed to make sure that my father had no idea with what was actually going on-"
"Draco stop, I'm okay"
"God Granger, that was seriously the hardest thing I ever had to do. Standing there knowing that I was the one who was causing you pain and wasn't able to do anything to stop it was killing me inside. I didn't know if I was going to be able to do it much longer."
"Draco," Hermione said softly as she reached up and cupped his cheek, "I know you didn't do it on purpose. And honestly I'm okay."
"You're not okay Granger, I just used an unforgiveable curse on you, and that is not okay, not even for a minute. I can't believe I did it, I should have just hexed my father instead."
Hermione put a finger over his lips, quieting him down. "I'm okay, honestly. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it didn't hurt, because it did. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The pain was bearable, because I knew that you were doing it because you love me, not because you wanted to. I know why you did it Draco, and I am not mad at you for it. I understand how dangerous it is for you, and that you are doing what you need to do in order to stay alive."
Draco felt a tear roll down his cheek, and Hermione brushed it away with her thumb.
"You are the strongest woman I have ever known. And I don't know what I did to deserve you, but I sure as hell will do everything I can to make sure that I keep you."
"And you're the strongest man that I have ever known Draco Malfoy."
"I love you," Draco said softly.
"I love you too."
Draco leaned in and brushed his lips softly against hers.
"I'm sorry, but I have to go. I have some things I need to figure out."
"You're getting Harry and everyone here aren't you?"
"What? No"
"I know you Draco Malfoy, and I also heard the entire exchange between you and your father. You were questioning him nonchalantly as to try and gain information about what sort of spells and things they have used as a means of protection. Which can only mean that you were doing it in order to figure out how to get Harry and whoever else through it. Am I right?"
"You're too smart for your own good, do you know that?"
Hermione smiled. "Well if it helps at all, I did overhear the Death Eaters talking about the barriers and stuff that are being used. They used an intruder charm, which is what will set off the alarm when unwanted guests come onto the perimeters, and a cursed barrier, which is what I believe your father was referring to when he was talking about people being injured if they cross over it."
"You're amazing."
"It's always good to know who your enemies are and what tricks they have up their sleeves. It's not my fault they weren't exactly quiet about it all."
"And I am thankful that they weren't, because now I have something to go off of. Now all I needed to do is figure out how to drop the barriers."
"Well all cursed barriers are based off of the same spell, but they branch out depending on the type. However, I believe that the counter curse for them all should be the same. As for an intruder charm, that's pretty generic and the counter charm should be a lot easier to identify. If I had a book I could probably find it for you."
"Granger, you've already helped immensely."
"It's the least I can do."
Draco stood up. "Well now that I know what to base all my information off of, all I have to is go and find the counter curses and not get caught."
"Don't take this as me not having any confidence in you succeeding, but are you sure you're going to be able to do this Draco? I don't know what I would do if anything happened to you."
"Don't worry Granger, I'll be fine. I just need to send a message to Potter informing him of what they're dealing with in case something does end up happening to me, not that it will."
"Just be careful, please."
Draco kissed her on the forehead reassuringly before standing up. "You be careful Granger," he said as he locked her cell back up before heading back up the stairs.
Draco inhaled a deep breath before stepping through the door that would lead him into the foyer. This was the biggest part of the whole plan, and it was the part that relied strictly on him. He needed to determine the counter curses that could be used in order to get everyone over the barriers safety. He didn't have the option of making a mistake, as lives were at stake. No pressure.
He let out the breath, and masked his face to one of bored indifference, the same face that he had been brought up to display. A Malfoy never wanted people to know what they were thinking or feeling, according to his father. This was one thing that he could thank his father for, as it was going to be his weapon right now.
"Draco, how lovely it is to see you."
Draco tried not to wince at the snakelike voice of his father's commander.
Draco bowed his head respectfully, and responded accordingly. "The pleasure is mine."
"I wasn't aware that you would be joining us for the holidays," Voldemort stated, studying him closely.
Draco made sure the shield his memories and thoughts. He knew that Voldemort was one of the best when it came to diving in to peoples minds and extracting what they are thinking, or memories that they wished to remain hidden. Draco thankfully, had started learning how to shield his mind from such attacks from Snape at a young age, and had mastered the talent.
"Mum would never forgive me if I missed Christmas."
Voldemort smiled a cold smile, and Draco felt his insides shiver. "Indeed."
Draco waited to see if Voldemort was done talking, unfortunately, he wasn't.
"So I assume your father has shown you, what does he refer to it as, oh yes, your present downstairs."
"He has."
"And I also assume that you made good use of it?"
"I wouldn't have had it any other way."
Voldemort smirked.
"I am sure that he has also informed you on why Miss Granger is present in your Manor?"
Draco could see Voldemort studying him carefully, skeptically.
"He didn't really say much besides you were using her to get to Potter."
"And do you think it will work?"
"It will. She's one of his best friends, he will do anything to save her."
Voldemort looked his face over carefully. "My thoughts exactly. Let's hope that Mr. Potter decides to grace us with his presence sooner rather than later. My patience towards the boy has started to grow thin."
Draco kept quiet, his face neutral.
"I have some things I need to discuss with my men, we'll chat further later," Voldemort said, dismissing him as he walked away.
Draco waited until Voldemort rounded the corner, and he let out a deep breath. So far, so good. He made his way up the stairs towards the library. He wished he could show it to Hermione. He pictured the look that would appear on her face when she walked into the room, and he couldn't help but smile. She would absolutely love it.
He pushed open the doors, and headed towards the section of his at home library that contained information about spells and counter curses. Thankfully, everything in this library was organized alphabetically, thanks to his mother. He picked up a volume, and scanned the appendix, and placed the book back on its place on the shelf after determining nothing of need in its pages. He did this a few times until he happened upon a book that spoke of barrier charms. He placed it under his arm, and continued scanning through books to find one that contained information on an intruder charm. He found this book quicker, and after grabbing it off the shelf, made his way to the back of the library where he would not be disturbed. He chose his spot carefully, making sure he was able to see anyone enter from all angles, giving him the time to use a spell to hide what books he was looking at if need be.
He threw open the first book, scanning the appendix to find which page talked about curse barriers. He felt his frustration rise when the appendix named about 100 different types. He opened the book to the beginning of the chapter, scanning through each and every type of cursed barrier spell. He wished he had gotten more information out of his father in regards to which type of cursed barrier they had chosen as a security measure, but he knew that he needed to be careful with his questions. He didn't want to raise suspicion on himself. And normally, Draco didn't ask much questions when it came to what the Death Eaters did, he just sort of went with it, which is why he now found himself losing his patience and temper while looking through the books. There were too many types of barrier spells for him to even begin to pick which one they would have chosen. He let out a frustrated breath and ran his hands through his hair. He needed to stay calm, to think. Losing his temper and patience wasn't going to help anyone. He tried to think like Voldemort. He had been around the man and his followers enough to get an idea as to how his thought processing worked. Draco flipped back a few pages, remembering one barrier that stuck out in his mind. He re-read the page.
The inferno of death: This barrier is invisible to the human eye, which makes it that much more difficult to determine and recognize. Even some of the most skilled wizards will often find themselves dead before realizing what has happened to them. The inferno of death is activated once an unwanted visitor or guest steps on the invisible line, causing the barrier to ignite in a deathly fire that will kill someone in a matter of seconds. Once the intruder has perished, the barrier will become invisible again, waiting for its next victim.
Draco couldn't help the disgust he felt upon reading the words. The more he thought about it, the more he was sure that this was the one that they had chosen to use. It just sounded like something that Voldemort and his followers would get a kick out of.
He continued reading.
This spell can easily be lifted, if one knows the counter curse. However, most casualties are usually lost before the curse is even determined, leaving one side easily overpowering the other. This spell can be altered to allow entry of selected persons, ensuring that those selected persons are free of harm. Follow these instructions to modify the spell-
Draco skipped past that section, skipping down to the part that ne needed.
Counter curse: "Eveseky"
In order to destroy the barrier curse, point your wand surrounding the area that is being protected and use the counter curse. The barrier charm surrounding the area should immediately be deactivated, allowing everyone entry onto the property. In order to improve outcomes, use the spell outside of the protected area.
Draco studied the wand movements needed in order to complete the spell. He waited until he was absolutely certain that he had perfected it before closing the book and opening the second one.
He flipped through to the page indicating intruder charms.
Intruder charms are non-verbal spells that are used to sound an alarm when unwanted people enter an area. Intruder charms are a basic spell that will cause no harm to the persons who are responsible for sounding the alarm, but will give the spell caster a warning, making the user aware of the unwanted persons presence within the perimeter. There is no specific counter curse for an intruder charm. The general counter spell 'Finite Incantatem' can be used to reverse the effects of the intruder charm.
Draco shut the book, letting out a sigh of relief. He did it. He figured out how to reverse the spells that Voldemort put up as a means of protection. Now all he had to do was take down the barriers and send a message to Harry and everyone who was waiting for his word.
Draco grabbed the books off the desk, and put them back in their place. If anyone came in the library they wouldn't even have known there was a disturbance. He slipped through the library doors, and closed them quietly behind him.
"Draco!"
Draco stopped in his tracks.
"What were you doing in the library sweetheart?"
Draco let out a sigh of relief when he realized it was only his mother. He turned around, and sent her a small smile.
"Was just doing some light reading mum."
Narcissa smiled a bright smile at her son. "You're such a bright boy. Don't know where you got that from, definitely not from me."
"You're a very intelligent woman mother."
"My intelligence does not even come close to that of my son."
"Well I'm glad you're proud of me," Draco stated.
Narcissa caught his hidden meaning. "Your father is a difficult man. He expects only the best from his heir. I know he has been rather difficult on you, and I am sorry for that, but it is how he was brought up. His father was the same way with him, so it's all he knows."
Draco swallowed the harsh words he wanted to say.
"I know you don't like when I defend him, but he is doing the best that he can considering who he is."
"He has an innocent girl locked up downstairs in a cellar, using her as a toy. I would not say that is him doing the best."
Narcissa eyed her son carefully, and Draco realized what he had said. He needed to keep a handle on his emotions.
"Is that not the girl that you complained about every time you came home?"
"It is."
Narcissa saw something flash in her son's eyes.
"You care for her."
"What?"
"You care for her."
"I do not."
Narcissa looked at him skeptically.
Draco made sure to lace his words with as much hate and disgust as he could as he said, "Mother, listen to what you are saying. She's a Mudblood! In what world would a Malfoy care for someone of that blood status?"
Narcissa studied her son, and nodded her head, accepting his answer.
"I am glad that you decided to come home for Christmas, it is never the same here when you aren't around."
"When have I ever missed a Christmas mother?"
"I always look forward to your visits."
"And that's why I keep coming back."
Narcissa smiled at her son. "Your spare broomstick is in your room if you feel like practicing."
"You know what, I think I will," Draco said, internally thanking his mom for the excuse to head outside. Him riding around on his broom wouldn't be overly suspicious. He often practiced Qudditch when he came home. And, if anyone asked him why he was going outside, he had an excuse now.
"Have fun and be safe," Narcissa said, excusing herself.
Draco headed towards his room, trying to keep his pace normal. He was so close to completing what he had set out to do. He didn't want to draw any extra attention to himself, so he had to make sure to keep a neutral pace while walking, as well as keep his face neutral.
When he entered his room, he immediately spotted his broomstick hanging on the wall. He grabbed it, along with a replica golden snitch, and headed outside.
"Going to practice Drakey?" Bellatrix asked as he passed her in the hallway.
"Gotta make sure to keep on top of my game," Draco stated.
"Yes, we can't have you lose the Quidditch cup again this year thanks to that Potter. Although, I don't think you will have to worry about that," she said cackling with laughter as she skipped down the hallway.
Draco watched her go, and then headed towards the back door. As soon as he was outside, he mounted his broom and took off. He needed to make sure it actually looked like he was practicing, in case wandering eyes looked in his direction.
He threw the snitch up into the air, gave it a couple seconds, and then took off after it. Draco chased it around, waiting for it to take a nose dive and head towards the ground. After a few minutes, the snitch finally did exactly that, and Draco took off, speeding towards the ground in pursuit of the snitch. He reached out, catching it right before he landed on the ground. Draco grabbed his wand out of his pocket.
"Finite Incantatem."
"Eveseky"
He shoved his wand back into his pocket. The back of the house was done, now all he needed to do was go to the front of the Manor and do the same thing, just to be 100% certain that the barriers were all down. He didn't want to chance making any mistakes. He knew that the house had been surrounded by a spell, meaning there was a round like barrier surrounding the house, so technically when he used the counter curse, the barriers should have been dropped completely, but he didn't want there to be the off chance that it wasn't.
He jumped back on his broomstick, and flew to the side of the house. He landed, and placed his broom against the side of the house. This was going to be the hard part. He could see two Death Eaters standing at the gates.
He looked over to his right and saw some hedges, and he dove into them. He peeked out to see if the Death Eaters had seen anything. Thankfully, they hadn't.
He poked his wand out through the hedge.
"Finite Incantatem"
"Epeseky."
He stood up, and walked out from behind the hedge.
"Well, well, well. Look what we have here."
Draco froze.
Standing in front of him, was none other than Voldemort himself.
"Seize him," Voldemort hissed.
Draco grabbed his wand out of his pocket. "Expecto Patronum. NOW"
Draco watched as his patronus took off. He let out a deep breath of relief as he watched it disappear.
He felt two people grab his arms, and he was hit with a spell that made him unable to move.
"Who were you sending that Patronus to?" Voldemort asked.
Draco kept his mouth shut, refusing to answer.
"Answer me."
Draco remained silent.
"Put him down."
The Death Eaters dropped Draco to the ground, and the wind was knocked out of him. Still, he was unable to move.
"If you're not going to tell me, then I am going to get it out of you. Crucio!"
Draco's body felt like it was on fire. The pain he was experiencing was the worst thing he had ever felt before. No wonder this spell drove people mad. Draco didn't know how long the spell had been on him for, but finally it was lifted.
"I am going to ask you one more time. Who were you contacting?"
Draco smirked at Voldemort.
"Crucio!" Voldemort snapped.
The pain the Draco had experienced before, was nothing compared to this. He guessed that smirking at the man had angered him even more, and now he was taking it all out on his body. What made it even worse, was that Draco was still unable to move. He felt himself weakening, but he fought to stay conscious. He needed to stay conscious for Hermione.
Voldemort dropped the spell.
"The Granger girl?" Voldmort hissed in disgust.
Draco looked at Voldemort confusedly.
Lucius came running out of the house. "What's going on out here? What are you doing to my son?"
"Why don't you ask your son?"
Lucius looked at Draco confused. "Draco, what's going on?"
"Nothing."
"Your son isn't who you think he is Lucius. He has been deceiving us all."
Lucius looked at Draco. "What is the meaning of this?"
"Your son is in love with the Mudblood girl that you have locked downstairs."
Lucius's eyes widened in disbelief. "That's not possible."
Voldemort smirked at Lucius, and Draco realized that he loved being the one to break the news about his traitorous son to his father. "Did you not say when you entered Hogwarts that Draco was always around her? Did you also not tell me that one time he even ran you off, protecting the girl?"
Lucius looked over at his son, studying him carefully.
"Draco, is this true?"
Draco looked directly at his father, but said nothing.
"Of course it is true! I was able to see it in his mind Lucius."
Lucius looked at Draco as if he had been slapped.
Draco was angry. He had let his guard down while under the curse, and Hermione had slipped into his thoughts for a minute, and that's all that it had took for Voldemort to figure it all out. And here was his father, looking at him as though it was the end of the word. He watched his father's face and saw something pass through his eyes, and in that moment Draco knew that his father had dismissed him as his son.
Lucius walked forwards, and before Draco knew what had happened, his father had landed a punch right to his face. He tasted blood in his mouth, and he spit it out on the ground at his father's feet.
"How dare you disgrace the Malfoy name. You disgust me. You are no son of mine."
"And you disgust me father, following him around like a lost puppy with your tail between your legs. You could never think for yourself or follow your own path. You've always been a follower. You think you're some courageous man working for him and that you're oh so important, when in reality the only reason why you're even working for him is because you're terrified. You're a coward. Your words are supposed to make me upset? Well they do just the opposite. I am proud to be no son of yours. You think I disgrace the Malfoy name? Sorry to tell you father, but you did that a long ass time ago."
Lucius was furious, and Draco felt satisfaction at pissing off his father.
"Take him down to the dungeons. Let him die down there like the filth that he is. If he wants to love a Mudblood, then he will be treated as such."
Draco was grabbed under his arms, and was being led back in the house. He could hear his father and Voldemort following behind.
"Draco? What's wrong?" Narcissa asked running towards him.
"Do not touch him Cissa," Lucius snapped.
"Lucius, what's going on?"
"Draco is getting what he deserves."
"What?"
"Don't ask questions woman!" Lucius snapped.
Narcissa looked between her husband and her son, and Draco could see the confusion and hurt in her eyes, which only infuriated him further.
He was led down to the dungeons, and he heard Hermione shuffle around in her cell. He shifted his eyes to the right so he could see her, and she was staring at him, her mouth and eyes wide open.
His father stepped in front of them, and he opened the cell next to hers. Draco was tossed in carelessly. The cell door was slammed closed behind him. He heard the lock click into place, and then the sounds of their footsteps as they exited the dungeons, leaving him behind.
He heard the basement door slam shut.
Draco was thankful that when they had thrown him into the cell, he had ended up landing on his left side, so he was facing Hermione's cell. That was how he was able to see her as she ran over to where their cells connected, looking at him with her face full of concern.
"Draco," she whispered softly.
"I'm okay Granger."
"What happened to you?"
"Nothing that you need to worry about love."
"Obviously I'm going to worry about you! Have you seen what you look like?"
"Can't say that I have."
"This is all my fault," Hermione stated, and Draco could hear the hurt and conviction in her words.
"Granger, look at me," Draco said.
Hermione did as instructed.
"What happened is not your fault, and I refuse to let you believe that."
"But you're hurt."
"This, it's only a scratch. Stop worrying about me I'm fine."
"Are you okay? Why aren't you moving?"
"Oh, they used a spell to immobilize me."
He saw Hermione's eyes widen. "Don't worry it's nothing. It doesn't hurt. I just can't move."
"What are we going to do?" Hermione asked.
"We are going to sit here and wait for Potter and everyone to come and save the day."
"Were you able to get all of the barriers down then?"
"Really Granger? Did you have no faith in me? Of course I got them all down, which is how I ended up in this position."
"'I'm so sorry Draco."
"Granger, what did I just tell you? It's not your fault. Now, see if you can reach into my pocket and grab my wand. The gits forgot to check me before throwing me into his place."
