Sitting in the Room of Requirement with all the things they needed for finishing the tapestry, Harry was in a good mood. He had the ring and it was stowed in his trunk in a compartment no one but him could get into. Tonight it would be in a safe place and in no danger of being destroyed. Perfect! One more thing that needed taken care of out of the way. That he liked. Less stress to deal with.
Sighing, Harry checked the blank tapestry. It was already soaking in the vat with the potion they had made for it and had to do so for another half an hour before some of Hermione's blood had to be added. That was fine, he didn't have anything else to do tonight, he just wondered what they were going to do to kill time until it was done, well, when Hermione got there that was.
As if she heard his thoughts, Hermione bustled in, apologizing, saying she had been studying. Dropping her bag and books, she bustled over and sat by him. Peering into the vat, she asked, “Everything is ready and added?”
“I have it all started,” Harry nodded. “In a half an hour all we have to do is add your blood. Once that's in, it'll start creating itself.”
Nodding, Hermione fidgeted around in an excited way. She couldn't wait to see this and what family she was related to! Settling in by him, she asked all kinds of questions about what he had done and how he went about getting it to soaking.
Filling her in, Harry summoned some tea and biscuits for them while they waited.
After the questions ran out, Hermione just stared into the vat. There was something she wanted to talk to Harry about, something that had been bothering her for a while, but wasn't sure how to bring it up to him, what with all he had gone though in the past. Sighing, she looked down and tried to think of a way to go about it.
After fidgeting around a little, she all but blurted out, “Harry, I know you and Professor Rowle have been teaching spells that are considered Dark in the Defense Club! Why are you teaching those and didn't tell anyone?”
Though slightly taken aback by the way it came out, Harry wasn't at all fazed by what was said. Shrugging, he told her, “I know some are Dark. Some are Light and Neutral as well. We're covering all of them.”
“Why though? You know people don't like that!” She told him, looking into his eyes.
“Flitwick teaches us Cheering Charms and other things that are very clearly geared towards the Light affinity without telling anyone it is. Nor are such things mentioned in the books we learn out of. Professor Lupin taught me the Patronus my third year. That was most assuredly a Light spell. Nor was I told what it was or how it might affect me when it came to my affinity. I don't see how teaching some of these other spells, no matter their affinity, is going to harm anything. Some people, especially when they get to our age, already lean one way or another because of their family. How is it wrong to teach them to defend themselves with spells that work for them rather than force their affinity to change to something else than won't be suited towards them? I don't see where that's productive. You do the Dark affinity ones very well yet you aren't evil, right?”
“Of course not!” Hermione huffed.
“Then why is teaching you something you will be better at wrong? You're not apt to use them to go take over the world. It just means you won't struggle with being able to perform something to defend yourself the way you would if it goes against your affinity,” Harry explained softly. Shaking his head, Harry told her, “Even the Wingardium Leviosa, the first spell we learned, can be used to kill someone, Hermione. Think about it... if Ron had dropped that troll's club on your head with that spell, you would be dead. Instead, it just knocked the troll out. Yet it's considered a neutral spell. It depends on how you use it! Most so-called Dark spells don't harm anything. It just does something opposite of what the Light ones do, nothing more. That doesn't mean they are evil in any way.”
Sitting there, looking down at her hands, Hermione nodded, thinking it over. From what she knew so far, he was right. That simple spell they learned to lift a feather with, the first thing they did in Charms, could easily be used to kill someone if that was the intent. Nor did it lean one way or another. All it had to do was be used by someone who wanted to cause harm and they could. She also saw the same thing from some of the so-called Dark spells they were learning. Melding all that with things she was talking to Viktor about and she was confused. However, she wasn't sure that she should talk to Harry about this either, what with his run in with the Dark side of things for so long, not to mention what it had cost him. Of all her friends, he was the only one she could think of that she could go to and discuss it.
Sitting there, Harry waited. Knowing Hermione the way he did, he was sure there was more coming along that line in some way, that it was leading somewhere else, and wanted to see where it was going. Now, though, he was assuming that Viktor was doing his job very well. In the past, she would have been horrified by what he admitted, arguing with him over it. Now, well, she wasn't. Instead, she was thinking it over and not just taking the 'party' line put out there by Dumbledore. That was a huge step in the right direction as far as he was concerned.
With a sigh, she finally asked her friend, softly, not sure what he will say about it, “Harry? What do you think about Voldemort, the breakout and all that? I mean, normally, before this last year or so, you've been pretty vocal about things. You haven't said anything about it lately. Even when Umbridge made it clear he wasn't, you didn't say a word, though others did. Before now, you would have. Why is that?”
Looking at her, Harry was wary. With Hermione, one never knew why she was fishing for such things. Not wanting to avoid the topic, thus making her more suspicious about things, he knew he had to say something. What that was he didn't know as he wasn't sure what was behind it. Meeting her eyes, he decided that he had to know before he said anything. Slipping into her mind as gently as he could, he went fishing around. What he found relieved him. She was asking because she was questioning things they had been told. It was her thought that he was the only one of her friends that might be open to at least listening. As she didn't know his leanings on the topics, she was wary about doing so, especially with all he had lost to this battle and what it had cost him in other ways. What she wanted was someone she could trust to talk about things and she didn't know who that was. With him being...well, him, she wasn't sure what his reaction would be. She was questioning almost everything now, understanding what so many others knew, and needed someone to talk to besides Viktor. In the end, though, she was terrified of losing him as a friend because of it and didn't know if she could. That pleased him.
Pulling back out of her mind, he looked at her and saw a horrified look on her face. She had felt what he had done. Smiling, he shook his head then said, tone soothing, “Sorry about that. I know it was intruding, but there were some things I had to know before I opened my mouth. You know what things are like anymore, Hermione. I'm not sure who I can trust and who I can't!” Sighing, he looked down and shook his head, “I know I haven't. I'm sure that everyone thinks it's strange I haven't said anything but the truth is I’m questioning all of it. No, I don't like what happened in the past or how things were done, but I think I understand it now. I, too, have been wondering about so much. I mean, everything in the universe is a yin and yang. There is a dark and light, one can't exist without the other. That's self proving. We can't live in the dark and survive like some animals can. What we subsist on needs the light. Other animals can't live in the light and need the dark to survive. Then there is the whole perception thing like we talked about before. Balance is needed for everything, be it magic or nature. That's why there is Light and Dark magic. It doesn't have anything to do with good versus evil the way so many think. I mean, look at Wormtail! He was a Gryffindor! All people tend to see is that it's Slytherins who go bad. He wasn't. He was taught all the same light spells as my parents and Sirius. Yet what happened? Then there is Percy. Look at what a prat he is! He was raised the same way everyone else in that family was, however he's nothing but a big, power hungry git! Remus is a werewolf. Those are called dark creatures, everyone labels them that way from the Ministry on down. He's not the least bit evil. You and I both know he's kind and nice. There is nothing at all evil about him but that label is there.”
Stopping, Harry looked down then said, still not sure what to say and what not to but hoped that he wouldn't go too far, “Look,I don't like what's being done in this school, I admit that. It's like we're all being trained to be a light army of some kind since that's the only way the system is focused. You do better with Dark spells. Though I can do all three, I work better with Dark spells myself! Despite what Dumbledore wants everyone to think, Potters weren't the epitome of Light families. There were both light and dark when it came to them. I think that's the way for most. Some do tend to lean more heavily one way or another but that doesn't mean they are all bad! Nor does it mean anything else. Just that's where their affinity comes in. However, with what's being done and the things taught, they are forcing everyone that goes through this school to work with only Light spells. In younger kids, that can change their affinity forever. That's not right. What needs to be taught is Neutral then do what other countries do and let the family teach for affinity rather than force it on something. Or teach both and be open about what they are doing! I mean, test them and put them in the right place, not force us all into a hole we might not fit in. That's what's being done, though, and it doesn't work.”
Nodding, Hermione looked at him with an open expression and wide eyes. She said nothing though, taking it in and considering it.
“I know that part of the things that happened in the past came from the leaders of the Dark trying to fight back to make this more balanced. They seemed to understand that both were needed and could co-exit together. That's what happens in other countries. We've balked though because of what's happened in the past.” Stopping, he shook his head then said, “If you look at history, you'll see we've had more problems with this kind of thing than others have. Sure, they've had theirs, but not like we have! It's been even worse since the Light controls everything and everyone is being pushed that way then the Dark gets labeled evil. You can't stigmatize one branch of magic because of what some do!”
“I agree,” Hermione breathed, nodding. “Viktor's parents belong to the Dark party but they aren't evil, neither is he!”
“Sirius was raised in a Dark house, one known for being that, and his affinity is dark but he isn't. The list goes on and on! It get's labeled that way, though. You say Dark magic and people automatically think evil. That's not right.”
“Oh, Harry, I'm so glad you understand! I was worried I would lose you over it! I mean, with all you've lost to the war...” she trailed off, looking at him.
“I'm just keeping most of it to myself after that mess last year,” Harry told her with a shake of his head. “If I even started talking about it we know what would happen. No, no point in that. I'm taking enough heat over some of what I said in that interview. I'd rather not bring more down on myself than I already have.”
“I can understand that,” Hermione empathized. “I just don't get it! Why can't we push for this? I mean, if you understand it, I mean really understand it, and the history behind it, you're more apt to have people not follow the evil way and just see it for what it is. They don't, though! It just gets labeled and stigmatized.”
“Because the Light controls everything. It has for so long that the only thing you hear is from them. They have their hand in so much that what really has happened isn't put out there. Look at Binns and the history class! He doesn't cover anything that would explain our true history. Merlin, the one that almost all of our world sees as the ultimate good was someone that had a Dark affinity. It was his half-sister that had the Light, not him, yet no one sees him as evil. We aren't taught that though. Hell, we aren't taught anything that is really useful about our true history. People have made sure of that over the years.”
Pursing her lips, Hermione thought that over, looking down. Finally, she asked, “Are you sure about that, Harry? I mean, I've not heard of that before. I'm not saying you're wrong it's just that nothing in the library has said anything about it.”
“I'm sure,” Harry nodded confidently. “You have to remember that when Dumbledore took over, he took a lot of books out of the library. What ones I don't know, but he did. What is there now is leaning the way he wants things done and taught, not necessarily everything on topics. It's a form of censorship on his part to get people leaning his direction. There are places you can order some good history books that are neutral and factual. None of those will show in this library though.”
“If you can point me the way, I'll get them,” Hermione nodded enthusiastically. “I want to know the real truth, not what we keep being told. I mean, we learn nothing from our history class! If you know where to find them, I want to read them!”
“Remind me tomorrow and I'll give you some titles,” Harry told her. “I also know a place you can get some catalogs from that will have what you want in them.” That went better than he expected and he hoped that it would push her further down the road away from all the prejudice she had been taught. With what was coming, she needed to know the truth of what was out there rather than the rhetoric spouted by Dumbledore.
Talking a bit longer about the books, they were finally pulled out of it by the alarm that told them the tapestry was done soaking. Standing up, looking nervous and excited, Hermione walked over and looked down into the vat. Letting out a quivering breath, she asked, “Alright, what do I do now?”
Pulling out a sliver dagger he had made sure to bring, Harry handed it to her then said, “Make a small cut in your palm and let some blood drip into it. Five or six drops should do it. Then we wait.”
Nodding, looking determined, Hermione took the dagger with a shaking hand. Taking a deep breath, she made a small cut in her palm then let some of the welling blood drip down into the liquid. When she was sure she had enough, she handed the dagger back to Harry and waited, making sure to heal the cut with her wand.
Looking into the vat, Harry watched the liquid bubble madly, like water on a good rolling boil. That lasted for a couple of minutes until it stopped. When the liquid was once more still, he said, grinning, “It's done. Let's hang it up and see what it says.”
Nodding, Hermione reverently pulled the tapestry out of the vat and walked over, hanging it up on something similar to a clothes line that was nearby. Looking at it, she asked, “Does it have to dry on its own or can we use a spell?”
“A simple drying charm is fine on it,” Harry said with a nod, stepping closer.
Quickly drying the thing, Hermione stepped as close as she could then began to read through it, eyes wide.
Standing by her, Harry glanced through the thing but let his eyes focus down on the bottom part. What he saw there pleased him greatly. She was descended from the MacDougal family. They were, most assuredly, a Dark family but not one of the ones that would frighten her off. He knew Morag from the advanced group. She was good at what she did, keeping her leanings from most people. Not to mention she was a Ravenclaw, not a Slytherin, something that might make it easier on Hermione. Pointing to that part, he grinned, “No wonder you are so adept with Dark spells. You're family is descended from one of the old dark pureblood lines.”
Focusing down where he was pointing, Hermione's eyes widened. “Oh! That's interesting! I know Morag quite well! She's one I study with sometimes in the library. Not only is she really smart, I like her! I wonder if I should show her this?”
“I think you should,” Harry told her with a nod. “I'm sure she can explain some of this linage better than I can. After all, her family goes back a long ways. She can probably tell you all kinds of things about them.”
“I will,” she told him with a determined nod. “She talks a lot about her family and her history. I'll have her explain it to me. This is great! Can copies be made of this, do you think? I want to send one to my mother.”
“Sure, we can do that,” Harry nodded. Quickly, he made some copies, keeping one for himself, saying he was interested in looking it over. Actually, that wasn't a lie, he was. What he was hoping to do was peruse it to see who else was on there so he could give an assist in pushing her down the road she was already going. That would only help things later on.
Enthused, Hermione took hers then, grinning slightly, settled down in one of the chairs, taking a closer look at it. “I like this! Mum will as well. She likes this kind of thing. All along she was wondering where the magic came from since she knows things like that don't just appear out of nowhere. This will explain it to her.”
Settling himself down by her, Harry looked it over as well, pointing out some names that they both knew while keeping track himself as all the ones they were seeing were Dark families, many of them with Death Eaters in them. Since he knew some, he hoped that he could talk to the ones that had children in the school to get with her and see what they could work with.
After begging off on a date with Fleur, something he didn't do often, Bill holed up in his small apartment. So far, he had spent the night going through the books Albus had given him. The more he read, the more Aberforth's words came back to him. By the time he closed the last one, he was certain he was being played in some way or that something, somewhere, was being manipulated. Sighing, he shook his head. Nor, really, did he have enough information to go on. What Albus had passed on to him seemed to be woefully insufficient in explaining some things. For example, it mentioned consequences for the system being manipulated but never said what they were. From what he saw, Albus was definitely trying to do that. No, he wasn't going to go for anything if there was a chance at a backlash to himself, especially an unnamed one, because of someone else's manipulations.
Shutting the book he had been reading, Bill put his head in his hands and tried to think. Now, honestly, he could understand why Albus wanted something like this in place before he died, he really could. It wouldn't due to give the other side an advantage they didn't need. However, if Albus was willing to fudge so much to do that, how was it going to help? That he didn't know. From what was said, there were tasks, hard ones, the being had to go through to get the position. If Albus helped him wouldn't that make him weak in ways he shouldn't be to take on someone with the power of the Dark Lord? No, he didn't like that and wanted more information on it before he even discussed it again. Nor did he think he could go to his parents with what he had. They would just say that Albus knew best and to follow him. This time, he didn't think that was a wise idea. It was something he felt that he should figure out on his own before he made a choice.
Sighing, he shook his head then leaned back in his chair. Information... he wanted it, badly, but wasn't sure where to go to get such a thing. This was something he hadn't ever heard of so he wasn't sure that the small libraries he knew about would carry things on it. That meant, normally, with things like that he would have to find a private library to do so. Something like that wasn't easy. He could always order books on it, but that took time to get. Nor was he certain he would want to go into a normal one looking for things on it. As he well knew, information like that tended to get back to people he might not want to know about it. Of course, there was Knockturn Alley. The rub there was he wasn't comfortable going into any of the ones there. His family was too well known for him to be anonymous going down there. No, there had to be another way.
Drumming his fingers on the desk, he tried to think, mind a whirl as he did. Then he hit on it. Eyes widening, he stood up so fast he toppled the chair over. Grabbing his coat from where he had tossed it, he headed out the door. Grimmauld Place had one of the biggest private libraries he had ever seen. From what he knew, no one would be there that night anyway so he should be safe. Maybe, just maybe, they had something that he could use. If nothing else, they might have something that would give him a place to start.
