Chapter 4
After a few hours of staring into the fire and contemplating the various things in life, Harry had gotten up from the sofa to grab the text he was currently reading and flop back down on it. The next five hours were spent perusing the incredibly dusty book, and alternately getting up to relieve himself or getting something to eat or drink. At 4:30 he marked the page he was at and got up and stretched, it wouldn't do him any good against Severus’ wrath if he wasn't ready when the older man came to pick him up. The other man wouldn’t use any Dark curses on him for something so trivial as not being prepared, or so he hoped, but he figured it would be better if he started packing anyway. So, grabbing his wand, Harry headed to his bedroom to find one of his backpacks to stuff some books in. Grabbing a stack of books off his desk, he shrunk them and placed them in the front pocket. Turning to the bookshelf, he resumed his actions and soon the bookshelf was empty of everything but dust. He really had nothing else but a few school supplies and clothes; the furniture was what came with the flat.
Deciding that he had time to pack the rest of his belongings later, Harry sprawled onto the couch and turned on the telly. He wouldn't be surprised if there was nothing on, there never was in the hours before dinner. As if agreeing with his thought of dinner, his stomach growled and Harry groaned, but got up to fix himself a sandwich, then returned to the couch to watch the news. As he took a huge bite out of his sandwich, he watched the reporter present the next news segment, a mass murder at a British bank in London. The Muggle news didn't really interest him, but when huge events like this happened, Harry grew curious at the events that lead to the occurrences. The reporter didn't give a lot of information, just the time and place, and the number of casualties. 'It's weird to see what a person or group of people can do when their emotions cloud their judgment and force them to act recklessly, ' Harry thought, watching the reporter talk. After finishing his sandwich, Harry watched the telly some more, and around 9 PM, heaved himself off the couch and into his bedroom. Tomorrow he would go to his boss and hand in his resignation, deciding that he would say that the events of that morning had shown him he couldn't deal with the stress of being a teacher.

He was floating in a peaceful sleep when he felt a ghostly touch on his face. His eyes slowly drifted open, and the hand quickly withdrew, sensing his awareness. Blinking rapidly, trying to focus his sleep blurred eyes, Harry noticed the dark figure leaning over his bed. Yelping, Harry grabbed his wand and faced the dark figure. There, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest and a smirk painted on his face, was none other than Severus Snape.
"I'm sorry Potter, did I scare you?" the man asked. His normal scowl was in place, but Harry saw the amused glint in the normally stoic man's eyes. Scowling at the mocking tone in the man's voice, Harry threw off his covers and climbed out of bed. He tried to ignore the other man's presence as he straightened, but his attention was once again drawn to the figure against the wall as he heard a sharp intake of breath. Severus was staring intently at his boxer clad body. Watching Severus' eyes travel up his body, he was slightly amused when their eyes caught and Severus shifted nervously and looked away, obviously uncomfortable at being caught admiring Harry's body.
Harry turned and grabbed the jeans lying on the floor, giving Severus a full view of his ass. As Harry zipped up and fastened his jeans, Severus roughly cleared his throat and started explaining his sudden appearance.
"Potter, we must return to Hogwarts as soon as possible."
Shaking the hair out of his eyes, Harry turned to look at the older man.
"Why? What's happened?" he asked, growing worried.
Severus didn't want to tell Harry about the attack last night, but he also didn't want to lie to one of his only friends. "There has been an attack on the castle."
Drawing in a sharp breath, Harry's eyes widened in disbelief. ‘There was an attack on the castle? How did the Death Eaters get past the wards?’
"We don't know how they got past the wards. We assume that there might have been a spy who passed on information to the Dark Lord. Also, my position has been compromised and we both have been offered to stay at Hogwarts." Severus said, as if reading Harry's thoughts.
"More like imprisoned in Hogwarts," Harry mumbled, making Severus' eyes twinkle in hidden amusement. "When do we have to return?"
"As soon as we get your affairs in order."
"Well then, it looks like I have to make my way back to the school to resign," he said, rummaging through his closet for a t-shirt. Severus nodded and went to the kitchen to give Harry some time to get ready. When Harry appeared at the kitchen door, he was surprised to see Severus standing in his kitchen wearing a pair of black trousers and black button down shirt.
"I will be accompanying you," Severus replied to the questioning look Harry had sent his way. Shrugging, Harry grabbed his house keys and held the door open for the other man.
After manually locking the door and resetting his wards, Harry turned to see Severus smirking at him.
"What?"
Shaking his head, Severus replied, "You're so predictable. Your wards never change and their structure is much like what I taught you."
"Oh," Harry replied, completely taken aback by Severus' answer, he didn't think the man knew him that well. Also, the close proximity of the other man was affecting his head, so he took a deep breath to calm himself and turned away and started descending the stairs. When he reached the bottom of the alley, they both made their way to the hidden Apparition point nearby. Unsure of what to do, Harry tuned to the other man, when he was suddenly wrapped in a loose, but close embrace. Startled, he looked up at the taller man's face, seeing a smirk.
"I don't know where the school is. You must perform a double Apparition. Will you be able to handle it?"
Harry scowled at the condescending tone of his former professor and focused on Apparating to his office without splinching either of them.
With a pop and a sudden bout of disorientation, they appeared in Harry's office in the boys' locker room. Harry quickly let go of the warm body he was entangled with and walked towards the door. Peering out the door, he noticed that the locker room was completely deserted; they had made it before the early birds came to play basketball. Motioning to Severus, Harry walked out to the gym, waving to the other gym teachers he passed. He saw the curious looks directed at his companion, but was not inclined to enlighten them. Severus was walking tall and absorbing everything that they encountered, from the faces of Harry's coworkers to the conversations the early bird students were having at the door leading out of the gym. Walking to the dean's office proved to be an easy affair and the few students they met gave a few furtive glances, but didn't ask any questions. As they reached the dean's office, the secretary motioned for them to go right in. Knocking on the door before entering, they noticed that the dean was talking to a student. As the dean looked up, the student's attention was focused on the pair entering the office; it was none other than the leader of the group that had bashed Kenny Michaels.
"Hello, Max. Mr. Walters, we will discuss your punishment later," the dean said, greeting Harry and dismissing the student in one breath. Harry took the recently vacated seat as Severus stood behind him, looking like a dark guardian angel in all his brooding glory.
"Mr. Deerfield, I formally resign my position as gym teacher," Harry stated, wanting to get this over with.
Deerfield looked momentarily shocked, but then solemnly nodded his head.
"I understand. I'm sure that after yesterday’s incident, a person such as yourself would feel unsafe in this current situation."
Harry heard Severus shift in reaction to the dean's last statement and was sure he was curious and probably worried.
"Will you be able to find a replacement to last the rest of the semester?" Harry asked, concerned at Deerfield's easy acceptance of his resignation.
"Yes, I think I'll just hire a substitute and worry about replacing you over the summer. Well, I have a meeting to attend, would you like me to mail your paycheck or would you rather come and pick it up?"
"I'll pick it up for him," Severus spoke up as Harry rose, causing Deerfield to raise his eyebrow at the dark figure. Severus just responded with a stubborn glare.
"Very well. Mr. Duncan, it was a pleasure working with you," Deerfield said, rising and shaking Harry's hand. "Have a nice day."
Harry followed Severus out the door and walked next to him once they were out in the hall.
"I don't suppose you want to tell me what happened yesterday, do you?" Severus asked, looking over at Harry and raising his eyebrow.
"Not here," Harry replied, walking towards the gym. Severus shrugged internally, willing to wait until Harry was ready to talk, and followed the younger man into the men's locker room. Harry walked towards his office, but stopped when he saw movement in the dark room. He felt Severus step closer and looked at him, a small nod signaling to proceed. Quietly opening the door, Harry slid inside, sensing Severus following, and flipped on the light.
"David?" Harry was surprised to see the other man rummaging in his desk.
"Max? What are you doing here?" The other man asked, he quickly stuffed something in his pocket and straightened.
"I could ask the same of you."
"Uh, I was looking for your whistle. I'm subbing for you today."
"Oh, well there's an extra somewhere in there," Harry said dismissively, studying the other man suspiciously. He jumped when the bell rang and the locker room was filled with noisy students.
"Well I need to go out and supervise. I'll see you sometime?" David asked, making his way towards the door. Harry and Severus let him through, sending each other questioning glances. Shrugging Harry walked turned off the light and closed the door, making his way over to the bathroom. Looking for an open stall, he pulled Severus in with him. It was a tight fit, and they were pressed chest to chest, Harry almost moaned at the heat that radiated from the taller man, but apparently Severus saw something sign on his face and he gave Harry a knowing grin.
Taking a deep breath, Harry counted down for their Apparition and he disappeared with a 'pop'.
