Chapter Three: Fear
That afternoon Harry saw his children off with their mother, they went by car. Once they were gone he sighed, went upstairs to wash and change before apparating straight back to work. He traipsed through the Atrium, ignoring all the others until he felt a hand on his arm. He spun around, wand in hand before he had even considered what he was doing. He found himself staring into a pale, very freckled face. "Maybe you should point that somewhere else, mate?" Ron said nervously.
"Sorry..." Harry murmured, stowing his wand back in his robes. "Long night."
"I can understand, heard you're working with Malfoy?" Ron gave him a sympathetic look. "Sorry to hear that." He said in a tone that one would use if someone had recently lost a family member.
Harry smiled and shook his head. "He's not as bad as you make him out to be, Ron."
The red head shrugged. "He's a git." They made their way up to the office together. "So..." Ron said, rubbing his hands together. "What you got for us today?"
"A meeting. Now." Harry said firmly. "We have to discuss a possible breach in security..."
"A...spy?" Ron's eyes widened.
"Not so loud!" Harry hushed him as they stepped into the room where the other Auror's worked. They were greeted by friendly waves and muttered greetings. "Right! Everyone listen up!" Harry said in a voice that held a soft note of command, yet everyone was immediately silent and attentive. "Yesterday I noticed that there have been some serious mistakes made in Record Keeping, now, I don't want to sound like I'm blaming anyone but..." He sighed. "Well, alright...I will not tolerate laziness! Someone has been flunking out on their duties! This is a serious case of Misconduct and if the person is not found out soon we could all lose our jobs!"
A small, bespectacled man stood up. "Uh, sir, what happened?"
"When I went to find a certain file I noticed that his name had been taken off of our most watched list...he's a known Death Eater!"
"Who?" Someone gasped.
"Avitus Brock..." Harry replied.
"But sir...Brock was cleared by the Wizengamot." Another said with a confused frown.
Harry's jaw dropped. "What?"
"That's right...What's his name...er...MacDougal from W.A.S said it...Why, sir? Is there a problem?"
Harry was too stunned to speak. "The W.A.S? What the hell are they doing getting involved in our department?"
Wizengamot Administration Services usually only dealt with paper work for the Wizengamot...so Harry was at a total loss of what to do. "Mate, this is...bizarre..." Ron said, clearly as stumped as Harry was.
"Shit!" Harry swore in frustration and spun on his heel. "I'm going to the Minister."
"Language, Potter." Harry froze to see Malfoy lounging against the door way with a small smirk. "I overheard your...conversation." he said with a raised eyebrow. "And I think I can answer for the Minister..."
"Well?" Harry demanded, not in any mood to be played with.
"Come with me." He jerked his head in the direction of Harry's own office and Harry followed, with Ron at his heels. "Really Weasley, is there any need for you to follow Harry around like a lost lamb?"
"Who are you calling a lamb?" Ron snapped.
"Ron, shut up." Harry muttered. His office opened as he reached the door and the lights flickered on as he stepped inside. He froze.
"Merlin's beard, Harry! You don't keep your office very tidy, do you?" Ron exclaimed.
"Ron...This isn't my mess..." Harry turned around. "Someone's searched my office."
Malfoy leaned forward, peering around. "Well, let's see if they took anything."
They all stepped over the threshold slowly, careful not to step on anything that might be a clue. Harry's eyes raked the place, searching for anything out of place...then he gasped. He ran to his desk, snatching a photograph frame from it and staring with wide eyes. "Harry?" Ron asked cautiously as he moved forward.
Harry couldn't speak. His whole world seemed to have been turned upside down and inside out. His insides had evaporated. He stood perfectly still, gazing at the photo in his hand. It was a picture of himself, arms wrapped around Ginny who was heavily pregnant. Both of them were grinning broadly, and there was a young boy gripping Harry's robes with one hand and holding an even younger boys hand in the other. Finally he choked out a strangled noise as he turned it to face Ron. On the glass was a giant cross...it was done in blood. "M-My...Family..." He gasped.
"Harry..." Ron stared at him, unable to speak.
"Snap out of it!" Draco snapped, not liking the way Harry's face went white. "Both of you, start searching for clues!"
Harry seemed to hear him and he blinked before shaking his head. "Y-Yeah...you're right..." He muttered, pushing hair back from his face as he replaced the defaced picture. "Right..." He straightened himself and Draco saw a very, very dark look enter his green eyes. "If they've touched my family I'll make sure they'll never live to see the inside of Azkaban." He hissed softly before he began searching the office.
It was Ron who discovered something, just as he was pulling the door shut. "Oy! Harry!"
Harry ran over to him. "How did we miss that?"
They all found themselves staring up at a large bloody symbol on the door. It was a half circle, rising up out of a squiggly line. "What does it mean?" Harry asked in confusion.
Draco frowned, cocking his head to the side slightly. "I cannot be entirely sure but...It does seem somehow...familiar..." He reached out and ran his fingers over the image, he drew them away, rubbing the tips together before pulling a face. "Blood...it's fresh."
"Nice..." Ron muttered. "Subtle...as always." He sighed and rubbed his hair. "Harry, go check on Mum, make sure Ginny's there."
"Huh? Oh...yeah..." Harry turned and raised his wand. He closed his eyes, easily picturing his happiest moment. He smiled as he remembered holding James for the first time... "Expecto Patronum!" He said and a massive stag erupted from the end of his wand. It cantered off. "Molly should get that and reply as soon as she can..." He said and made his way over to the nearest chair. He collapsed into it, bowing his head. Draco moved away, giving the man time to compose himself. He pretended not to see the way Harry's hands shook, the way his shoulders were tensed. He gazed, instead, at the strange symbol on the door. It was familiar he felt as if he should know what it meant.
"Is it some kind of Rune?" Ron came up behind him, looking pale and anxious.
"Don't be stupid, Weasley." Draco snapped absently.
"Oi, don't talk to me like that!"
"The only reason I'm being nice to you is because the Minister himself has asked that I work with Harry on this case...I have no reason to be polite to the likes of you."
"Oh, so now you're on first name terms? When did that happen?" Ron snarled.
"Last night...or, more like this morning."
Before Ron could express his confusion another silver patronus appeared in the centre of the room. Harry was on his feet so quickly he nearly fell over. A Bear suddenly materialised in the centre of the room, Harry stared at it, his heart beating so rapidly he was worried he would have a heart attack. Mrs. Weasley's voice echoed from the silvery form:
Harry, I haven't seen or heard from Ginny since she told me yesterday that she was brining the children...is everything alright? I was just waiting for them to arrive.
Harry's legs buckled. Ron managed to guide him to a seat where he collapsed just as the bear disappeared. "No..." Harry muttered, covering his face. "It's over...it's supposed to be over!"
"H-Harry...I'll tell my mother..." Ron began and lifted a shaking hand, he stared at the wall for a long time before sighing. "I can't do it."
Draco sighed, removing his own wand. "Expecto Patronum." He muttered, a bright silvery substance grew from the tip, slowly forming into a near solid shape. A long Adder appeared and shot off out the door.
Ron raised an eyebrow. "Not really all that surprised." He muttered.
"The Adder is a symbol of Transformation, Healing, Life Energy, Rebirth, Resurrection, Initiation, Wisdom, Cunning and Reincarnation...do your research Weasley." Draco snapped.
"Stop it, both of you." Harry sighed. He looked up at Draco, his green eyes still wide with fear for his family. "Whoever broke into my office has my wife and my children...I want them found!"
Later Harry found himself storming into the Ministers office, Draco and Ron at his heels. "Kingsley...They have my wife and children!" He said as soon as he swept into the room.
The Minister's eyes widened, they slipped to the side and Harry saw a man he knew very well sitting in the seat opposite the Minsiter. "Brock..." Draco muttered. "Harry..." He reached but Harry's robes slipped through his fingers.
There was a bang, a sharp scream of pain and a bright flash of light. Harry was stood above the man, wand pointed directly at his heart, he was breathing heavily, his eyes narrowed as they flashed dangerously. "What did you do with them?" He demanded through his teeth.
"Harry! Harry...stop..." Kingsley had stood up, gazing at the prone man. "You cannot just..."
"I can do whatever the hell I like to filthy scumbags who kidnap people's family!" He growled. "Now! Talk!"
"M-Mr. P-Potter...I-I...I h-have no i-idea..." Brock stuttered, his eyes glued to the end of Harry's wand.
Harry flicked his wand, the man was thrown flat on his back. "I said; Talk! Where are they?"
"Harry! Listen!" Draco shouted, finally getting through to the enraged Auror. "He doesn't know a thing! How could he? He's been here all this time with the Minister!"
Harry's wand wavered, he seemed to be on the edge and suddenly he took a sharp breath and let it fall to his side. "I..." he began, feeling almost faint as the sudden fury passed over him. He fell sideways into a wall and covered his face with his hands. "I'm sorry." He muttered.
"It's alright Harry, we understand..." Ron said slowly. "Ginny's my sister...and your family is my family..." He stepped over to his friend and grabbed his shoulder. "Come on, we'll get you something for shock."
"No." Harry shook his head and straightened. "No, it's fine. Let me deal with this..." He turned to the Minister who was frowning slightly.
"What happened? You said they had your family?"
"My office was searched, when I looked inside someone had covered one of the photographs with b-blood...And there was something painted on the wall...Some kind of symbol."
Kingsley nodded slowly. "I see..." He said slowly. "Right, I suggest you take a group you trust and begin searching...I'll give you time off for this."
"Thank you, Minister." Harry said with relief. He was still shaking slightly but this time allowed Ron to guide him from the room.
Draco shot a glance over his shoulder and saw a very strange look pass over Brock's face, it was almost a smirk. With a small frown he turned and followed Harry, once he had caught up he heard Ron telling him that they would go back to Grimmauld place. "Wait, I don't think that's such a good idea..." Draco said.
"What do you know?" Ron snapped.
"Well, it makes sense for the Death Eaters to go after Harry's family where they are weakest. Everyone knows where the Great Harry Potter, Dark Wizard catcher extraordinaire lives."
Harry let out a tired chuckle at that. "Is that what I am in the underground?"
"No, that's what you are to me." Malfoy said and speeded up so he took over the pair. "Come with me, Malfoy Manor has the tightest security on it. We'll be safe and we have access to a rather extensive library."
"Brilliant, thanks, Draco." Harry sighed.
"We'll go by Floo powder, I think it's safest." Draco paused when he reached the lifts. "You should start thinking more like a Slytherin, Harry, I know you have it in you." He smirked and saw Harry return it.
Ron rolled his eyes as he stood by his friend's side. "I'll call Hermione, she can join us." He muttered.
Malfoy felt a sudden tightening in his gut. "You want to invite the..." he bit his tongue and turned away. "The Granger girl?"
"Weasley." Ron muttered.
"What?"
"She's Weasley now, Malfoy."
"Oh...so she finally tamed you?" Draco smirked. "I guess I underestimated her patience."
"Piss off, you useless..."
"Alright! Stop it you two! Let's just concentrate on making sure my wife and kids come out of this alive, yeah?" Harry said. The two fell silent.
As they neared the fireplaces that lined the walls Harry came to an abrupt halt. "Wait a minute..." He said. "I have to go back to Grimmauld place...I need to make sure there aren't any clues or something..."
Draco looked a little frustrated but conceded. They took the Floo network to Harry's house and ended up sprawled on his kitchen floor. Harry climbed to his feet, brushing himself down. "Sorry, I'll never get used to that." He muttered and looked around the room, everything seemed as it had been when he left...but he was certain there had to be something.
They began searching the house, from top to bottom. Harry worked upstairs, Draco on the first floor and Ron on the ground. Finally Harry opened the door to his Godfathers room, it creaked and all it took was one glance to realise that they'd been there. On one wall, covering all the old Muggle posters, was that bloody symbol. Harry gazed at it, fear tightening his gut. He felt a sudden, painful twinge in the old scar on his forehead. He winced and rubbed it, it was probably his imagination. He moved into the room and saw words etched into the wall, gouged with something sharp so they sliced through the many layers of posters and into the plaster.
Uttuis, si visad locumubieosomniacoepit.
"Ron! Draco!" Harry called. It was a second before he heard feet on the stairs as the two men ran up to him. Draco was first, he stepped into the room, scanning everything with a critical eye before finally looking at the words. He moved forward, his fingers gliding over the scars. "What does it say?"
"It's Latin." Draco murmured. "We have your family, if you want them back come to the place where it all began." He turned to see Harry mouthing the words thoughtfully. His green eyes were dark, Draco could see the pain in them, the terror of losing those he loved.
"Where it all began? What's that supposed to mean?" Ron asked quietly.
Harry's eyes drifted to the photograph on the wall before sliding to the desk where an album sat, open on a page filled with moving pictures of a man and woman. "Godric's Hollow." He said.
"How do you know?" Ron looked at his friend.
"Because that's where it all started...for me anyway. That's where..." He rubbed his scar with his finger tips. "Too predictable." He muttered furiously. "They want to kill me in the same place my parents were murdered!"
"Then...you reckon this is a trap?" Ron looked worried. "You can't go, mate. Let me..."
"No. It has to be me...don't you understand? If you go they'll kill them all! They want me. I'm their target."
"But..." Ron went quiet at the look Harry gave him.
Draco sighed. "I don't think that allowing your Gryfindorish self sacrifice to interfere in this is going to help anyone. I'm sure your children won't wish to see Daddy die right before them...even if it is to protect them."
Harry winced. "What else can we do? They have my children!"
"We plan." Draco said with a smirk, reminiscent of his childhood. "We go to the Manor, I must speak to my father..." He swept from the room leaving a stunned silence in his wake.
Ron and Harry shared a look, it was odd for them to be working so closely with Draco. Finally Ron shrugged and gestured to the door, Harry smiled weakly and followed Malfoy.
They arrived at the Manor later that evening, this time bringing Hermione along, much to Draco's displeasure. They were polite to each other, but stiff. As they walked up the long gravelled driveway Ron began complaining. "Why couldn't we just Apparate right in front of the door?"
"Because you cannot Apparate here." Draco snapped irritably. "We have similar protections as Hogwarts."
Ron fell silent, glaring at Malfoy's back petulantly. He seemed to be reverting back to adolescence, even Hermione's acceptance of Draco's help didn't make him feel any better about working with an ex-Death Eater. Finally they stopped before a pair of large double doors, Draco removed his wand and tapped on it once, the doors creaked open revealing an all too familiar entrance hall.
"Ah, Draco, darling...is that you?" A woman stepped into the Hall lights, she was tall with dark hair and dark eyes. Her robes were a soft grey. Her eyes widened as she gazed at the newcomers, she went slightly paler as her eyes flicked to Harry. "What...?"
"Astoria, this is Harry Potter." Draco began slowly. "His friend, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Gra-Weasley."
Astoria nodded politely. "I had no idea we would be having guests...I'll get some tea." She turned and swept off down a corridor, her heels clicking on the marble floors. Draco turned to his guests, "Follow me." He muttered and moved further into the house.
Harry's eyes moved around hungrily, the manor could only have been described as Opulent. The stairs, beautifully carved mahogany, heavy oak doors, polished marble...it wall fitted so perfectly with Draco's image of refinement. It was almost funny. They were led into a smaller, more homely room off the main hall, there was a massive fireplace with golden flames roaring steadily away. The sofas were soft leather in a gentle olive green, Draco offered them seats. "Now, I will be back...we need my father to help us." He said and moved gracefully out of the room.
Harry sat down, nearly jarring his backside on the hard sofa. He winced. Ron perched at his side, looking for all the world like he was sitting on a Knarl. Hermione stayed standing, she kept fidgeting with her sleeves and glancing around nervously, of course she would be nervous, the last time they had been at Malfoy Manor she had been tortured. Harry's thoughts drifted to his friend, the little house elf Dobby and he sighed slightly. They heard a soft creak and looked up at a small boy, about the same age as Al staring at them from the shadows, his grey eyes widened as they landed on Harry and he stepped into the room. He was the spitting image of Draco. "Hey, you're Harry Potter aren't you?" He asked as he walked towards them.
"I am." Harry replied with a small smile. "You must be Scorpius."
The boy nodded. "Yeah, my father said you were Head Auror...and so did your son, James." Harry nodded again. "Is it true? Did you destroy..."
"Scorpius, enough." Draco had entered, followed by his wife and a man Harry knew all too well. "Isn't it time for your bed?"
"But father..."
"Do not question me." Draco put his hand on Scorpius's shoulder. "If you're good, your mother will read you a bed time story...now, off you go." Once the boy had gone off, dragging his mother by the hand, Draco moved and sat in a seat opposite Harry.
Lucius stood by the fire, his hands clasped behind his back. He was rigid, as if someone had poked a rod down his robes, his eyes narrowed every time they landed on Harry. After a tense pause Harry spoke softly. "I'm not here to raid you, Mr. Malfoy." He said.
"I know that, you are here at the invitation of my son." Lucius replied, stiffly.
"Yes, I am also here to ask for advice." Harry looked up at the man that had caused him so much trouble. His long white blond hair was greying, he had a smoothly shaven face but no longer looked quite as haughty as he once had. "Someone has kidnapped my family..." Harry spoke softly, keeping eye contact. "I don't know who they are, I only know that they left me a sign..." he drew out a quill and a spare piece of parchment from his robes and sketched the symbol for Lucius. "This..." He held it out and watched the man's face, he went even paler, making him look almost transparent and took a lurching step backwards.
"Your family will be already dead." He whispered. "I will have nothing more to do with this!" he turned and made to leave but Draco stood.
"Father, I know you know what that sign means...Harry is trying to save his family! Help him!" the gentle, pleading tone in his voice made Lucius freeze.
There was a long moment of silence, broken only by the soft sound of everyone's breathing. Then, in a voice softer than a whisper, Lucius spoke; "Equitum Solis Surgentes." He turned slowly and stared at Harry. "I am sorry for your loss, Mr. Potter...but there can be no way that they are still in the world of the living." With that he left.
