Harry Potter and The Equitum SolisSurgentes
(Order of the Rising Sun)
Prologue
Harry sighed heavily as he placed his quill back in the ink pot and gazed down at what he had written. Yes, that seemed about right. When finished he tipped his chair back on its back legs and ran fingers through his hair, his green eyes landed on a small photograph on his desk. It pictured several, rather happy looking people, each one grinning broadly and waving at him. He smiled in response.
"Mr. Potter?"
"Ah, yes?" He turned at the sound of his name to find himself confronted by a rather lanky man, his head was a mess of tangled brown hair, his eyes pretty non-descript. Harry recognised him as a man from the Department of Magical Education, he looked slightly nervous as he approached Harry.
"Uh...we've just been handed this...everyone thought it would be best to hand straight to you." He held out an official bit of parchment, Harry took it and gazed at the name on the front.
"Teddy? Again?" He shook his head. "How does he do it?"
The man shrugged slightly, tugging on his robes nervously. Harry was used to this kind of treatment, after all, he had managed to kill the most feared Wizard of all time. "We thought it best if you handled this case, sir...We weren't sure if this warranted such extreme actions...so we've kept it quiet."
"Yeah, thanks...I'll talk to him." Harry muttered, opening the parchment and reading it quickly, his eyes little more than a green blur.
The man left silently, sending the strange young man an odd look over his shoulder. Everyone knew about his accomplishments, everyone knew what he had done...he had freed the Wizarding world. But he was treated with a nervous respect, many of the older Wizards in the Ministry had reservations about Minister Shaklebolt's appointment of such young Wizards, Potter and his friends had been given preferential treatment and in many people's eyes this was unfair. However, the young man never bragged, he was quiet and devoted to his job.
"Harry! Harry! Harry James Potter!"
"Huh? Wha...?" Harry jumped, ink spraying from his quill and messing up the parchment before him. He blinked and rubbed his eyes beneath his glasses before turning to find himself face to face with a witch with overly bushy hair, tied up in a knot. She had her hands on her hips and was looking at him with a stern expression. "Hermione? What are you doing here?"
"I should ask you the same thing, you do know what time it is, don't you?"
Harry looked down at the golden watch, given to him by Molly Weasley on his seventeenth birthday. His eyes widened and he jumped to his feet. "Ginny's going to kill me!" He exclaimed, gathering his stuff as fast as he could.
"Why are you falling asleep in your office?" Hermione asked as she helped him clean up the ink.
Harry shot her a wary glance, even at Thirty years old he knew he couldn't hide things from his best friend. "I...It doesn't matter...honestly."
Hermione simply looked at him. "Ginny's worried about you, you know."
"I'm fine, Hermione." He insisted as he reached for the papers in her hands, she drew away.
"No, you're not. Listen...if you need to talk..."
Harry snatched his work back and shoved it into a draw. "I told you, there's nothing wrong with me. You coming to dinner?" He changed the subject, turning his back on her to end the conversation.
He heard Hermione huff irritably. "Molly's invited us to the Burrow." She said, accepting that her friend obviously didn't want to talk about it. "Will Ted be coming?"
Harry turned back around. "I think so, he usually does..." he frowned in concern at the letter that still lay on his desk. "But...I don't know what's got into him, Hermione." He said finally. He looked at her, hoping that perhaps she could shed some light on the issue.
She rolled her eyes and sat down in Harry's vacated seat. "You, better than anyone, should be able to understand." She said.
"But I don't! He's been in trouble more times than Ron's had hot dinners! I keep having to go into the school and talk to his teachers about him, because god forbid if he tells his grandmother what he's been doing! It's like he's trying to get himself expelled!"
Hermione snorted loudly. "And you were never in trouble at school were you?" She chuckled as he glared at her. "Look, you have to understand that while he's at that school he will always be haunted by the memory of his father...a man he never even knew, a man he is convinced abandoned him..."
"Abandoned? Remus didn't..."
"I know, Harry." Hermione said in a placating tone. "But he will see it that way, he is shadowed by his father...everyone saying how brave he was, how wonderful...It's hard on him."
Harry raised an eyebrow, leaning against the desk as he folded his arms. "Yeah, because I never had that at school, did I?" He muttered sarcastically.
"Yes, but you had been convinced that your father was a no good drunk who got his wife murdered in a car accident...so really, you expected a lot worse. Teddy has grown up with people telling him stories about his father and mother, stories he is expected to live up to...I think it's getting to him. He's acting out to try and get attention...to try and distance himself from his father by trying to prove he is different."
Harry frowned as he considered this. "That's all well and good...but I think he may have pushed that little too far this time..." He gestured to the letter and Hermione sent him a worried look before picking it up and reading.
"Dear Mr. Lupin, We have been regrettably informed that on the sixteenth of August you performed the Impediment Jinx upon no less than six muggle's. You have, unfortunately, been warned about underage magic outside of school, and so we must sadly inform you that you must attend a hearing before the Heads of the Department of Magical Law enforcement and the Improper use of Magic Office on the Twenty seventh of this month.
Yours faithfully,
Mildred Artichoke.
Head of the Improper use of Magic Office."
Hermione looked up at Harry who ran fingers through his eternally messy hair once again. "You see? He...he's out of control...Obviously I can't tell his Grandmother about this...I'm pretty sure she'd kill him."
"I'm going to assume you'll want to preside over this?" Hermione asked warily.
"Yes. I don't want him going there alone..."
"You still don't trust them, do you?" Hermione smiled slightly. "Even after working here for years."
Harry smiled. "What do you expect? The way they treated..." he shook his head. "And then there's the fact that his father was..." He didn't need to finish, Hermione understood that the poor boy had been through hell in his first few years of school. He had been bullied all because of his parentage. Not only was his father a known werewolf, but his mother and even his grandmother had connections to a feared family. The two looked at each other in silence for a while before Harry sighed. "I've got to get going...I'm sure Ginny's going to be furious that I'm late...again."
"I'll walk with you to the entrance...Ron's looking after the children." She grimaced slightly and stood.
Harry chuckled and followed his friend out of his office. "I think Ginny's losing it." He said with a small smirk. "James is over excited about starting school, he's already nearly set fire to the carpet..."
Hermione failed to hide her smile. "Yes, I can see who he takes after."
"Ginny's had to put unbreakable charms on all our valuables, especially since Al nearly blew up the oven...I honestly don't know how he does it..." They both moved towards the golden lifts that would take them to the atrium, Harry's long robes swept across the floor as they walked, speaking about their children.
XXX
Ted stood outside the door to his Godfather's house. He vaguely knew that Harry had inherited it from his own Godfather, and he also knew there were some pretty horrible portraits in there that would hiss insults at him. He didn't care about what a bunch of old paintings thought about him anyway, even if the old house was connected with his Mother's family. With a small sigh he lifted his hand and knocked firmly on the knocker, it had been the shape of a serpent but now it was golden with the head of a lion. Ted much preferred that over the creepy snakes. The door was opened by a woman with a fall of gorgeous red hair, it was tied back from her face in a pony tail, her cheeks were flushed and the boy was greeted by the warm scent of cooking and the sound of laughter. "Teddy!" Ginny Potter exclaimed happily, she drew him into a tight hug before holding him at arm's length and eyeing him. "You look good...come in, come in." She pulled him into the house, glancing distractedly at the huge portrait of a woman who watched him with narrowed eyes as he passed. "James! Give that back to your brother, now!" Ginny's voice rose above the laughter and Ted peered around her to see a small boy of eleven holding up what appeared to be a small toy, it was emitting little squeaks as it protested his rough treatment of it. Another boy was leaping up trying to grab it and crying. James looked sideways at his mother before huffing and dropping the toy on the floor.
"Teddy!" He cried as he noticed the teenager, he ran over hopping up and down slightly. "Guess what? Guess what? You'll never guess!" He said quickly.
"You're going to Hogwarts this year?" Teddy said, his voice low.
"Yes!" James jumped up and down. "I'm gunna be in Gryffindor...just like Dad!" He grinned. "And you know what I got today? Huh? Guess!"
Teddy moved further into the house, dropping into a chair in the large kitchen. "Your wand?"
"Yeah!" James turned to his mother. "Can I show him? Pleeeeeaaaase?"
Ginny smiled. "Go on then, go get it." She watched her son fondly as he ran off to get his new wand. "He's so excited..." She sat down in the seat opposite Teddy. "How are things with you?" She asked, concern obvious in her brown eyes.
Teddy shrugged, not really wishing to go into details. "Fine, I guess." He muttered vaguely. Hair fell into his eyes, hair that was always changing colour, he got bored easily. Ginny opened her mouth to speak but the door opened again and they all heard a new voice.
"Sorry I'm late!"
"Harry!" Ginny stood, moving towards her husband as he entered the kitchen. "Were you held up with work?" She asked, taking his cloak.
"Yeah...something like that..." His brilliant green eyes landed on Teddy and the boy knew his Godfather knew what had happened. "Teddy...I'd like a word." He said.
Ginny looked from one to the other. "Harry...? What's this about?"
"Nothing for you to worry about...Teddy, now please." He turned and strode from the kitchen just as James ran down the hall.
"Dad!" he grinned, gripping a well worn box in his fingers. "Hey...what's wrong?"
"Nothing, James...go see your mother, I'm sure she could do with some help."
James rolled his eyes. "But it's booooring..." He said. "Why can't we get a house elf? Scorpius said he had one..."
"Because your Aunt Hermione would actually murder us." Harry said with a small grin in Ginny's direction. Ever since Kreacher's untimely death several years ago Harry had never got another, much to Hermione's relief. "And the Malfoy's are...different than us. Now, go do as I say, you can show Ted your wand later."
"Ugh...fine." James ran into the kitchen.
The house was noisy, full of laughter and warmth. Teddy liked it here, he felt at home, even more so than he did with his Grandmother, 'Dromeda. She was nice, treated him well, but she was also formidable...with a strong sense of duty and discipline which got on Teddy's nerves. He followed Harry up a flight of stairs and into the drawing room, even here had been thoroughly transformed. The walls were beige with accents of crimson and gold on the curtains and sofa's. It was comfortable and warm, with the fire crackling in the hearth beneath a mantle-piece full of photographs. Harry stood before the flames and looked at his godson. Teddy was fourteen, his hair fell into his eyes and had become black, the boy had blue eyes today. As he looked, Harry could see his father in him, even though he had inherited his mother's abilities, he had the same gentle mannerisms as Remus had and the thoughts made Harry's heart ache slightly. After a moment he sighed. "Teddy...I received this today..." He withdrew an open letter. "I'm sure you've already received a copy...and I'm sure you know what this means."
Ted shrugged and sat down, hunching over slightly as if he was trying to hide. "So what? Those Muggles were taking the piss." He muttered.
Harry closed his eyes briefly. "You know you can't use magic to hurt muggles!" He said, desperately trying to keep his patience. He kept running over everything Hermione had said to him. "They can't defend themselves and you have broken the Statute of Secrecy! You could be expelled!"
"Yeah, and? It's not like anyone would care..."
"That's not true." Harry said softly. "We care, Your Grandmother cares...Teddy, you're surrounded by people who care..." Harry looked at the boy, desperate for him to understand. "You need to get your act together. The Ministry won't be so lenient next time...you're lucky I managed to get them to see me first. What I want to know is why? Why do you feel the need to keep pushing like this?"
"It doesn't matter! What does anything matter?" Teddy snapped suddenly. His hair went from black to an angry red before turning back again.
"It matters because this is your future." Harry said softly.
"What future?" Teddy glared at his Godfather. "You don't understand what it's like for me! You don't understand..."
Harry snorted. "I don't understand? I understand a lot more than you're giving me credit for." He said sternly. "I grew up without parents, just as you did...except I wasn't as lucky as you. I grew up with an Aunt and Uncle who despised the very sight of me..." he took hold of his anger and pushed it down, taking a quick, calming breath. "Look, I understand better than anyone else. You are overshadowed by your father, you think that he deliberately died and abandoned you but I swear to You Teddy, Remus did it so that you and everyone else would have a better future."
"So everyone keeps saying!" The boy said angrily. "But what proof is there that he ever loved me?"
Harry thought for a moment. "You're surrounded by it." He answered slowly. "When you see all those children, able to attend Hogwarts no matter what their blood status is, when you see people smiling...when you see the good in the world...that's how you'll know your father loved you."
Teddy was confused, he frowned at Harry. "What? How's that proof?"
Harry stepped forward, crouching down and looking up into the boys face. "Because you know that your father died to help preserve all these things and more, you'll know he died to give you a better world. Isn't that proof enough?"
Teddy thought long and hard on this before nodding slowly. He did understand, of course he did...but why did he feel so...so angry all the time? He couldn't even explain it himself, he resented his father, and he didn't know why! He wanted to make people notice him, he wanted them to look at him and realise that he wasn't his father!
"Look, if it makes you feel any better, for a while I doubted the stories about my own father too." Harry said softly. "When I was your age, I discovered that he wasn't perfect and I had to seek reassurance from his friends. It was Remus, your father, who reassured me...he made me realise that my father was only human after all. He had faults, just like the rest of us...He was a bit of a bully, my mother hated his guts but eventually he grew out of it." He smiled. "So, I understand what it you're going through..." He paused for a moment. "I'll come with you to this hearing, just to keep an eye on you and make sure they let you off with a reprimand. Next time, just think before you jinx people." He smiled and Teddy couldn't help but return it.
"Thanks, Harry." He said.
"No problem, you're always welcome to come to me for help...whenever you need to."
The day of the hearing drew near and Harry found himself the topic of gossip yet again. He was followed by whispers wherever he went, and it was wearing on his nerves. One day he stepped into the golden lift, followed by a little flock of purple paper planes.
"Hold it! Hold the...woah...!"
Harry grabbed the lift door as a red headed man came sliding to a halt, he was gasping slightly as he dived into the lift just in time. "Thanks...oh! Harry!" Ron grinned at his best friend and Harry nodded back. The ginger was wearing dark maroon robes, his hair was messy and he was clutching armfuls of paper work.
"Bureaucracy, huh?" Harry said, nodding towards the pile.
Ron grimaced. "Tell me about it! I mean, mate, they have got me working like a dog and all I'm doing is signing papers all day! Can't you give me something fun to do? Like...Like...I dunno, raiding Malfoy manor?"
Harry shook his head. "Seriously? I would have thought you'd well over that grudge..."
Ron glared darkly at his friend. "He's an arrogant prick." He said.
"He's alright...he's learned his lesson." Harry replied absently.
"Actually...that's a thought...you going to Teddy's hearing right?" Harry nodded. Ron leaned closer. "I'm gunna warn you now, I heard this from Perce, apparently they're gunna be trying really hard to get Ted kicked out of school..."
Harry's eyes widened. "What? But it was a childish prank! They can't..."
Ron looked worried. "Percy told me that he heard the Governors are trying to get the 'filthy werewolf brat' out of the school...It's ever since those horrible attacks on those Muggle-borns last year..."
"Those werewolves knew what they were doing." Harry muttered, slightly distractedly. "It's ridiculous! Teddy isn't even a werewolf!" He said vehemently, he ran fingers through his hair.
"Look, calm down, yeah? You're not going to get anywhere if you get angry...Don't get yourself kicked out of office just because you lose your temper with those gits."
Harry took a steadying breath and nodded. "Thanks for the information, I'll make doubly sure to make them know I won't tolerate this kind of crap!" his green eyes darkened and he held himself straighter, Ron was always impressed when his friend got angry.
"Go get 'em mate." Ron said and pushed Harry out of the lift as it reached the department for underage magic.
Ted sat in a seat, he felt nervous, his grandmother sat at his side as a line of ministry officials gazed imperiously at him over the top of a long desk. The room was too small, almost suffocating and he kept fidgeting, and earning a glare from Andromeda. Suddenly an old witch cleared her throat, her stern gaze on a piece of paper before her. "Now, we are all here to witness the..."
She was interrupted by the door banging open. All eyes turned to it and they saw a man with messy black hair and startling green eyes glaring around at them all. "I see you all decided to begin without me?" Harry said as he strode into the room.
"Mr. Potter...the accused legal guardian is here, we have no need of you." The woman replied imperiously.
"The accused is entitled to a witness, Ms. Artichoke." Harry assured her, matching her gaze.
"You were there when these instances happened?"
"No, but I can vouch for his character." Harry moved to stand behind Teddy. He made an impressive figure, wearing robes the colour of the sea and framed by the light from many lamps.
"Really, Mr. Potter...we have no need..." A man began but stopped when Harry glared at him.
"If I am not mistaken, Mr. Jones, I believe that the law states that the accused is entitled to as many witnesses as he wishes. I am here to attest to this boy's character."
Ms. Artichoke frowned. "Very well then, shall we begin?"
Harry nodded and took out his wand, with a wave a chair appeared and he sat down at Teddy's side. After a moments silence the hearing began.
"Mr. Lupin here stands accused of casting the Impediment Jinx upon several unsuspecting Muggles, not only breaking several Wizarding laws but also sending one to the hospital after falling and breaking his nose." Artichoke began slowly. "Now then, what do you say for yourself young man?"
Teddy glanced at both Harry and his Grandmother before swallowing hard. "It was an accident." He muttered.
"An accident?"
"Yeah, they were...calling me names and I...I just got angry at them." He glared down at his hands which were clasped in his lap.
There were mutters at this, Harry watched them all warily, he could see several members of the School Governors on the panel and saw them casting Teddy nasty looks. He frowned. "So, you're telling us that because of a few insults you decided to break the law? That's outrageous! How can we allow someone with such anger issues in our school..."
"There is no proof Ted has any anger issues." Harry said quietly from where he sat. "He has not displayed any obvious signs of this before, so, that's irrelevant."
The man glared at Harry, obviously under the impression he was just using his sway within the ministry to get the boy off. "He put a muggle in hospital!" Another man said sharply.
"Yes, and I'm sure he regrets it." Harry replied.
"I have given him suitable punishment, Mr. Sawyer." Andromeda spoke calmly from where she sat. "I think that would be enough to curb his temper again, don't you?"
"Being grounded is hardly suitable punishment for such a crime!"
Harry stood abruptly, drawing all eyes to him. "I have watched Teddy grow up, I've known him since he was born, I am his godfather. In my opinion he was just making a childish mistake, you cannot punish him for something so stupid. This is a waste of the ministry's valuable time."
"Mr. Potter, we know you hold great sway over the minister, but here you have no jurisdiction. Head of the Auror office you may be, but you do not make the laws, nor can you change them. His fate is in our hands." Ms. Artichoke glared at Harry who narrowed his eyes, he knew they all thought he had got his position through his friendship with Kingsley but he wasn't going to stand by and let them condemn a child for a silly mistake.
"I have just as much right to speak as Andromeda Tonks and I believe that Teddy's sentence should be less, taking into account his personal circumstances."
"I hardly think his circumstances are relevant here..."
"They're perfectly relevant! He is a teenager, he's angry and that leads to stupid mistakes...you cannot condemn someone for being human!" Harry argued back furiously. Someone snorted sceptically before he went silent at Harry's furious gaze. "I know what this is all about...It's got nothing to do with underage magic anymore, has it? It's because his father was a werewolf!"
"Mr. Potter! I'd thank you to keep your opinions and unfounded accusations to yourself!" Ms. Artichoke glared across the table at Harry who was feeling his own anger rise rapidly.
"Unfounded? I trust in my skills in gathering Information, Ms. Artichoke, I have reason to believe that you are deliberately trying to get this innocent boy kicked out of school just because his father's condition could taint the reputation of some of the governors! If I didn't know any better I would have thought we'd gone back in time!"
"Outrageous! Absolutely outrageous! How dare you accuse..." One man had stood, his chubby face nearly purple with rage.
"I can accuse if I have enough proof...I'd watch your back if I were you, Brock." Harry hissed softly. "If I wanted I could have you and your family investigated...I have an inkling that you'd hate to find my Auror's on your doorstep..." The man went from purple to white, he sat down with a thump and gazed at Harry with an open mouth.
"Harry, that's enough, really..." Andromeda said calmly. She shook her head. "You can't go throwing your weight around like this...Sit down." She pulled a furious Harry back into his seat where he crossed his arms and glared at the panel.
"Then...we shall adjourn to make our decision." The woman said, her face slightly paler than usual. With that the group stood and marched out, leaving Harry to fume in silence.
