Chapter 43
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Lounging in one of the chairs in front of his godfather's sofa, Harry was listening to what Sirius had to say, liking what he was hearing. Nodding vigorously, he told his godfather, “I think you should do it! I mean, we can either use a glamour like I do to disguise who you are or like Tom said; a mask. It'll give you something to do, Sirius. Besides, that way you know I'm protected.”
“That's the part I like,” Sirius admitted. “I'm going to say right now that I probably won't like much of what I see you do, I know that, but it beats sitting around here all the time with nothing to do. Shite, I’m already starting to go a bit barmy from doing that!”
“Very true,” Harry said honestly. “It's not generally bad. Most know not to cross me anymore and don't try anything stupid, but once in a while they decide to get moronic. It'll be nice to have someone watch my back though. I know there are plenty, especially some in the upper circles that have been around for a long time, that don't like my position. They haven't done anything as most of them know better, but you can tell they aren't happy with me and some, if they get the chance, I wouldn't put it past them to try. They'll fail, of course.”
Taking that in, not having thought about it that way, Sirius said, “Yeah, I think it's something I need to do. I know you can pretty much handle yourself, no doubt there, or your other half can, but I'd feel better knowing I'm doing so as well. After all, one can't always predict when someone goes off their nut and decides who their target is.”
“Exactly!” Harry said pointedly. “We've had a few get huffy with me because of frustration during training sessions. I tend to shut them down quickly, or Tom does, but one never knows. Besides, if you're under a glamour or mask, you can help out a bit with the one group. They are bloody pathetic. No one would know who you are, but you could get to do what you're bloody brilliant at. Besides, even with all of us working with them, they are a nightmare. That leads to frustration on our end. You might know a better way to go about this than we do that would make it easier on all involved.”
“I could, I suppose,” Sirius told him thoughtfully. “I mean, I actually like doing that kind of thing. As it's not really helping to further some goals from this side, I could manage. And it would keep me busy.”
“Busy will be good,” Harry told him firmly. “If nothing else, don't make it anything formal, just help when you see someone have a problem. And, between Tom and I, we'll make sure that Wormtail stays the hell always from you. He's wary of me anyway and tends to avoid being around me. Nor is he in the greatest favor with Tom, something he knows well. He won't be a problem. I'll get with Barty to make sure he knows he has to take on dealing with him completely.”
“Alright,” Sirius agreed. “Him—one more attempt to hex me like he did when I came in and I won't guarantee that I won't do something nasty.”
“Wouldn't break my heart,” Harry snorted, sneering. “I doubt it would disturb Tom too much, either. He's a problem and we both know it. We just don't know what to do with him. There's no way to Obliviate what he knows and turn him over to the Ministry. That's what I wanted to do. Right now--” Harry trailed off, shrugging. Then he grinned, “He does get to make a good lab rat though. I got to use him for that more than once when I was working on some things. Not to mention Tom's nailed him more than once for pissing him off.”
Not really wanting to know what Harry practiced on his old 'friend', Sirius couldn't help but grin. “That's about all he's really good for, honestly. He was pathetic in school and after that. All there is to it.”
“That hasn't changed,” Harry snorted. “Look, I'll get with Tom this morning before we go out and get something worked out as to how to go about this. Then you can start. The meetings, well, we don't need you there and you probably don't want to attend those anyway. The rest? We can work from there. You can even come along when I do some other things. It's nothing big, but it'll give you something to do.”
“Alright,” Sirius told him, looking at Harry. “Might not be the most exciting thing in the world, but it's better than being out here all alone most times. At least I can be around people. I definitely like that idea.” Leaning back, he draped his arm over the back of the sofa and looked at Harry, “Just let me know from there.” Shifting topics, he asked, “So, what are you up to today? You said you were going out. Isn't that dangerous?”
Grinning, Harry said, “We're safe, trust me. It'll be in glamour, of course. We're going to see about finding some books that Narcissa needs for research then I'm going to hire a solicitor. I need it for my estate, no doubt there, but there's something coming up that I'm going to need him for.”
“Do I want to ask what that last part means? Or is it something that I don't want to know?” Sirius inquired, not sure if it was an answer that he would want. With Harry, you never knew anymore.
Lowering his head, Harry thought the question over, not sure what to say on it or even if he should. After a minute or so, he said, quietly, “Let's say I’m going for emancipation and leave it there. I'll get it in the end. That's not going to be a problem. I just need to start the forms now so nothing looks odd.”
Actually, Sirius was relieved about that. His mind had already skipped to the worst case scenarios when it came to what you needed a solicitor for. This—it was understandable. “Alright, good. It's something you need to do.”
“I'm not going back to that place, Sirius. I don't care what Dumbledore says. The blood wards are gone, they fell over the summer when I didn't go back, so there is no reason for me to be there other than to further whatever that old man has planned. No, it's not happening! I'll spend my time out of school right here,” Harry told him firmly, looking at him.
For once, Sirius completely agreed. “I understand, completely. No, this is better. Hell, from the sound of things, anywhere is better than that place.”
“No kidding,” Harry snorted. “And it isn't like anyone is going to step in and do anything to make it stop. No, I'm not going back, no matter what. This will do that. With all that was said over the summer in the paper, I can manage it. Just going to give it a push is all, nothing more. I'm sure it'll be done before Yule. Then I don't have to worry about that anymore.”
Not wanting to know about that part, sure there was plenty there he could easily do without knowing and be happy he didn't, Sirius nodded, “Gotcha. Yeah, that's bad and Dumbledore needs to be hexed for doing it.”
Sneering at the mention of the headmaster's name, Harry sighed and rubbed his eyes then said, “One of many things. He'll get his in the end, no doubt there.” Shaking his head, he changed topics, sure that was a topic Sirius didn't want to get into with him, then asked, “I was wondering—do you know anything about the Hallows Prophecy or where we might find out something about it? We've heard it mentioned in things that were looked up, but haven't come across it yet. That's part of what we're going to see if we can't find. We just don't know what to look for. There are plenty of books on the Hallows, just not the prophecy.”
“Actually, I do!” Sirius grinned. “There were a couple books out there I read in school on it.” Scrambling around, he grabbed a spare chunk of parchment and quill then scribbled down a couple names of books. Then, as an afterthought, added the name Malach HaMavet. Handing it over to Harry, he said, “Those are a start. Ask for those and anything like them. They give a history of the prophecy and spell it out, giving what they think it means. The name is what the Master of Death goes by supposedly. It might yield you something as well. He's the one supposedly associated with the Hallows myth and the prophecy. There were a couple books out there on him I read, though I don't remember the names, that say they trace him through history when it comes to the Hallows.” Stopping, he grinned sheepishly, “It was one of those odd things you get interested in as a kid because it was supposedly a mystery that was real. I liked those for a time.”
Taking the parchment, Harry looked at it, grinning. “This is great! It'll give us somewhere to start hunting. Thanks!”
“Anytime,” Sirius said, smiling. “There was a place down Knockturn Alley, at least there used to be, one of the booksellers, that supposedly had a copy of the Hallows Prophecy you could listen to. I don't think it's real, of course, but they swore it was.”
Filing that away to tell Tom, Harry nodded again. “Alright, we'll see what we can find.”
“Why are you looking, anyway? That's ancient shite. It's not real, of course.” Sirius inquired, curious.
“It's come up a couple times with some other things we were looking into so we were seeing what we could find. Nothing more than that. Not sure if it'll lead to anything anyway. Better safe than sorry, you know,” Harry explained, tucking the parchment into his robe.
Though not understanding why the two would want to look into something that was nothing more than a story, Sirius nodded. He figured they had their reasons. “Sorry, I read several books on the topic long ago, but can't remember the names beyond the two I gave you. Anyone worth their salt in a bookstore will be able to help you find what you need with just those though.”
“Good! We don't have anything and can't find it. It'll give us somewhere to begin,” Harry told him with a firm nod, wondering if someone did have a copy of the prophecy. Like Sirius said; it was probably fake. It would be interesting to listen to though. Leaning back, he moved on to asking if Sirius needed anything and how the elves were doing with him, nothing big, something to just talk about before he had to go.
Letting himself into the study after the visit with his godfather, Harry was pleased to see Tom didn't seem busy. Walking over and sitting down, he pulled out the parchment that Sirius had given him and sat it down. “I think I have a couple leads on the Hallows Prophecy and Lord of Death.”
Shuffling aside what he had been looking at, reports that weren't really that important, Tom leaned back and looked at Harry. “Oh? How did you manage that?”
“Sirius, believe it or not!” Harry grinned, handing over the parchment then explaining what he learned.
Liking that, Tom nodded when he was finished. “Good. We'll stop in a few places while we're gone and see what we can turn up. That name, though—it rings some bells though I don't know where it's from. Maybe I read something about it years ago or it was mentioned once. I don't know. We'll give this to Narcissa as well and let her see what she can come up with. It's a lead though, a good one.”
“I thought so,” Harry nodded. Pressing on, he went over what Sirius agreed to. When he finished, he shrugged, “I like the idea, really. Gives him something to do that he'll be good at. I'll leave it to you, though, to come up with the mask and something for the glamour.”
Again, Tom was pleased with that. “I'll get him something and he can start this week with our training sessions. I think it'll work well for all of us involved, actually. He'll be kept busy with something he wants to do and you'll have protection when I can't keep as close an eye on you as I'd like, though I know you're more than capable of handling yourself.”
“I do as well,” Harry told him. Then, shrugging, he added, “Honestly? As it's Sirius, I feel it's about the best protection I can get aside from you.”
Agreeing with that assessment, Tom nodded. “Alright, I'll finish up here then we can go. That way we have plenty of time to explore if we need to before the appointment.”
Grinning, liking the fact they were going out again, Harry nodded.
Sitting in front of Solicitor Piper's desk, Harry was reading through the contract that was presented to him. It was a standard one of this nature from what he gathered. There were just a couple odd clauses in it he was double checking. As they dealt with Piper being allowed to deal with Tom on some matters when it came to his estate, he was making sure there were no loopholes. Tom was leaning over and explaining some of it quietly to him so he understood all the legal jargon attached to it. That helped. Though he could pretty much figure out what most of it meant, he liked having it clearly laid out for him so he was certain what was there before he put his signature on anything.
After going through it all, making sure to ask questions if he didn't understand something, he signed it and handed it back to the man.
Pleased to be picking up such a wealthy, influential client, not to mention the people Harry was attached to being something that could only aid him in the future, Piper quickly sent the contract off to be filed. Leaning forward, he put his elbows on his desk and clasped his hands then looked at the two. “As that's out of the way, let's discuss what you need me to do aside from managing your estate. From what I was told, you have something specific you need for me to do.”
Liking that the man got right to the nub of the matter, Harry asked, “Did you see my interview in the paper over the summer?” Seeing the man nod, he said, “Then it comes as no stretch of the imagination to understand one of the big things I want is emancipation. I'm more than capable of caring for myself by this point, far better than my so-called family can for sure.” Glancing at Tom, he said, “Besides, I have somewhere to stay with someone that's considered a legal adult. That should smooth the way if there are any doubts.” Producing the forms that Lucius had helped him fill out, he passed them over to the man.
“Yes, that should be easily managed. I don't anticipate a problem with getting such a matter approved. It's just going to take some time. However, we'll start the paperwork on it today and I'll look into the initial filings this week.” Piper told him with a firm nod. Quickly, he summoned the forms needed, aside from the ones Harry had already given him that were filled out. As that was the bulk of them, this wouldn't take long. After he received them, he laid them out in front of the young man and handed him a quill so he could fill out what was needed then sign them.
While Harry was busy filling out the required information, Tom leaned back in his chair and looked at the man. As Piper was well aware who he was dealing with, he said, “At some point soon, you're going to need go to Hogwarts to deal with matters pertaining to this then get with Fudge to press the issue. You're willing to do this?”
Liking that no details were being given to him that could get him in trouble down the line, he nodded then replied, “Of course. That's not a problem. As I'm taking over managing the estate, I'm going to have to turn up at the school several times for various matters. That way before something may happen, people will see me and won't get suspicious. And Minster Fudge and I have a good relationship. As, if what I read is correct, he had a good relationship with Mr. Potter and seemed genuinely concerned about what's happened when it comes to the family situation, it won't seem odd. I'll just ensure I get the forms filed as fast as I can so that they are in play before matters that may take place occur so nothing will seem odd. Then nothing will seem off if there is a need for me to be involved after an event or something like that. No, it would be expected as I'm one that's well known for taking my clients business very seriously. In fact, it would look odd if I didn't show up!”
Liking that the man caught on fast, Tom nodded. “We also want to ensure that Albus Dumbledore keeps his fingers out of the decision. He's had a tendency to try to dictate what Harry can and can't do then where he wants him placed. Harry wants that stopped.”
“I will ensure it,” Piper told him with a firm nod. “Albus has no standing in any of this and if he tries, I will make it clear that he is not to.” Looking between Harry, who was busy filling out the papers and the being introduced as Nick, though he was certain who this really was, he asked, “I'm assuming Mr. Potter has no other living relatives? No one like that where someone could insist that he go?”
“No, there is no one else,” Tom told him.
“Alright, then I anticipate no problem getting him emancipation. If there were anyone else, there may be some roadblocks we would have to work with. No, this should be easy.”
Nodding, Tom pressed on to some other things while Harry finished, like contact and other such necessities. All in all, he was quite pleased with this choice. He liked not only the professionalism but the ease the man had though he knew who he was dealing with. Yes, he was sure this would work.
Sneezing a couple times, Narcissa shook her head, wrinkling her nose. She and Lucius were in his father's old personal library going through the books there. As no one had been in here since Abraxas passed away, it's was rather dusty. A quick cleaning spell had dispatched most of it, but some still lingered on the books, causing issues when they opened them. As she wasn't used to being around dust, it tended to cause sneezing. However, this was worth it. As the Dark Lord had said, there was a wealth of information on the Hallows here. Much of it wasn't anything they could use, more like dissecting if they were real or not and where to look for them, something so many seemed to still be on a quest for.
Sitting in one the chairs, she was sorting through what was there, trying to eliminate and send to the main library ones they didn't need while setting aside ones that might have information in them. From there, she would take them to her sitting room and read through them to see what she could find. She hoped, with what she was coming across, she would find something. So far, she had found a great deal more than she had up to this point. That was a good sign.
Just as she had sent another stack of books off to the main library where the elf in charge would catalog and put them up, Lucius came over. Looking at her husband, she could see his brow furrowed as he read. When he sat down by her, she asked, softly, “Have you found something?”
“I think so,” he told her distractedly as he read through the passage on a being named Malach HaMavet. As he skimmed through it, he turned the page then his eyes widened. “I found it! The Hallows Prophecy!”
Straightening up, setting her own book aside, she tried to peer at the page he was reading. Excited, she asked, “What does it say?”
Brow furrowing as he read it, his eyes then started to widen before he started to read it aloud,
“Light becomes Dark and Dark prevails over all. The Lord of Death rises.
Youth's face hides him before he joins with the Lord of the Dark.
Death did not win, and failed yet again. Its Lord restores.
Prophecy-wrought, betrayed, from Light's shadows he will emerge.
In the hands of the descendant, once more joined the Hallows three be.
Abandoned, he comes to the Dark. Retribution is delivered.
Salvation comes from a thing loathed.
Once unequal, now is balanced. Nature is restored.
Understanding and peace will reign once more.”
Stopping, Lucius looked at the page then to his wife, something in his brain starting to click, but he wasn't sure what it could be.
Pleased, nodding, a small smile on her face, Narcissa said, “Good! I'll find some more, then take it to our Lord!” Looking at her husband, she held out her hand for the book. “Can I see? I want to read it.”
Distractedly, Lucius handed it to her while replaying the words in his mind. There was something there, something that connected with things he knew but he wasn't sure what it was!
Reading through the prophecy, Narcissa sat it on her lap then sighed, “So murky!”
Shaking his head, Lucius said, tone distracted, “They always are. That leaves them open for so much misinterpretation. I don't think I've ever heard one that is clear.”
“I wonder what it means,” Narcissa said, looking down at the book, brow puckered slightly.
“I don't know, I really don't,” Lucius said, looking at it. Whatever was there that was trying to connect for him wasn't doing so. There was a niggling, a big one, that he could make parts of it fit together with something he knew, but he didn't know which parts or who it would connect to.
Reading through it again, Narcissa shook her head and huffed then flipped back a page and read what was there on Malach HaMavet. Brow furrowing, she said, “Maybe we should find what we can on this being. It seems related. The more information I can give our Lord, the better he'll be with it.”
Focusing back on his wife, Lucius nodded, “I agree. Let's finish this sorting and while you start looking through the books, I'll see what I can find on Malach HaMavet.”
Smiling, Narcissa leaned over and gave Lucius a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for your help, Lucius. It's most appreciated.”
Patting his wife's hand gently, Lucius then gave it a squeeze. “Anytime, Narcissa. Now, let's see what we can find, shall we?”
Putting that book aside, making sure to have marked the page with the prophecy, Narcissa went back to scanning through the books, sorting them.
Walking back over to the shelves, Lucius began to look through what remained. However, as he scanned through what was still on the shelves, he found himself turning and looking at the book a few times, mind dancing over the words he had read. Somehow or other, he was certain this was big, very big. He didn't know how, but he was certain it was. Sighing, shaking his head, he went back to the task at hand but thought, maybe, the two of them should present what they found to their Lord as soon as they were able.
A special thanks to Rogue who helped to reword the prophecy for me so you lot couldn't understand it! LOL!
