Chapter 48
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
As dusk was starting to fall and the plans were pretty much in place, everyone was once more gathered in the room Harry shared with Tom. So far, Harry hadn't come out of it other than what they had seen. The only positive thing was that he had moved in his 'sleep' like you would when you normally slept, such as turning over and shifting around to get comfortable. That was a good indication, of course, something that told them he would come out of it, but it didn't give any kind of timeline as to when he might do so or the shape he would be in when he did.
Sitting by the bedside, Sirius was working on copying the map for the parties that needed it as well as giving Snape, someone he was definitely leery about doing so with, and Barty a crash course in how to use it. They, in turn, would give Draco the same thing, though Voldemort said that Draco had the basics down as he had to use it before at Harry's behest. It rubbed him the wrong way to copy something that all of them had used and give it to the side that they had fought against, and two of his friends had lost their lives to, but understood why it was being done. After all, it had helped keep his godson safe for a very long time. As that was the purpose here, he managed to push the other thoughts aside and do what was needed.
Taking his copy of the map once Sirius was done, Barty nodded, “This will be a big help, that's for damned sure. If anyone takes it in their head to come down, I'll see them coming and can pretend to be asleep. Not to mention give Severus a heads up so he can head them off at the pass before they even try.” Already he and Snape had come up with something to use to send messages; that thing Harry had devised the year before for the two of them, something that no one would think twice about either of them having.
Though astounded with the map, and slightly disgruntled because of the past, Severus nodded. Looking at the Dark Lord, he said, “I'll keep it on me at all times. I will also ensure to watch out for anyone trying to get in to see Potter. There are going to be a few that will try, I'm sure.”
“Who do you think will?” Voldemort asked, curious. “Well, aside from Dumbledore that is. We both know he will. His friends, I assume will, though I'm not overly concerned with them. Barty should be able to handle them with no problem as he has a feel for their personalities from teaching last year.”
“Dumbledore is one I'm concerned with, obviously. His friends—not so much. He's no longer close to Weasley. Granger and the female Weasley are smart enough that they won't try. It's his female fan club I'm worried about,” Severus sneered. “Chances are, despite not wanting it to get out, the ruse we're going to use will and some are going to try. It's them I'm more concerned with.”
Nodding slowly, Voldemort looked at Barty. “Be aware of those kinds and handle them the best you can. Anything that might be 'off' if they get through, can be attributed to the state you'll be in.”
“I'll manage,” Barty told him firmly. “I know last year Harry was plenty fed up with them and I'll use what I saw then. Hopefully, Severus can get to them before I have to deal with them.”
“One of the things I'll push Dumbledore for is a monitoring charm on the room that will alert me as I'm closest. A few times of the idiots dealing with me should stop it, other than Dumbledore. Even with him, I'll ensure I make it clear to leave him alone,” Severus said, looking dour, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I say, going in, tell Dumbledore to leave him alone for a week. Even if he comes out of it in a day or so, it'll give him time to make sure he has his bearings and is rested from this. Once he's 'with it' enough, we'll bring Barty back and send Harry. Then we can go back to our normal routine. Draco will be needed to help with that, or you will, Severus,” Voldemort explained. Though he didn't say it aloud, the reason for that was to ensure that Harry was completely back in control of himself and to give him some rest.
“It'll be done,” Severus nodded.
“The chocolates are ready to go and it can be proven that's what's in them?” Voldemort asked the Potions Master.
“They are ready and it can easily be detected. We also made sure that several of them were removed so it'll appear that Potter ate a more than sufficient portion to cause what will happen. The antidote is something I always have on hand in the castle as, though this doesn't happen often, it does enough that it warrants we keep it.” Severus told him confidently.
“Very good,” Tom nodded. Looking at Lucius, he asked, “You can do the spell to make Barty appear disoriented, but his faculties are completely intact?”
“Easily,” Lucius confirmed with a nod. “It'll last a couple hours at the most, but that should give them plenty of time to get him where they need to go and confirm it for Dumbledore. Once it starts to wear off, he can just pretend to go to sleep. That should be something that would be expected.”
Pleased that everything seemed to be in place, Voldemort looked at the young man sleeping on the bed. Sighing, he said, “Now all we have to do is wait.”
“Which is going to be the hard part here,” Barty sighed, taking a seat by Sirius.
Snorting, Tom nodded, but said nothing. However, he was much more relaxed about the situation than he had been. They had a good plan firmly in place that would be executed by people he trusted so he was confident that they could pull it off with no one the wiser that Harry wasn't there. Just as he was about to go over the plan once more to ensure that everyone had it down, there was a soft knock on the door and Narcissa stepped in. Motioning for her to come closer, he waited to see what she had come up with. Hopefully, it was something good, especially with how long she had been gone.
Giving a respectful nod of her head to Lord Voldemort, Narcissa began to pull shrunken packages out of her pocket and moved to sit them on the table by the bed. “It took me some time, but I was able to find a place that had what we needed. It's a small specialty shop in London, very discreet. They were able to come up with everything I needed when I explained it was for a friend of mine who had burnt her face in a cauldron exploding accident.”
“You were able to find something passable that won't look too odd?” Tom asked. This was an area he was lost with and had no clue about makeup so he didn't know what they were able to do.
“I was,” Narcissa told him, pleased. “It's magical, however it has something to protect the wound. It has to scab over first, but what it happens to be is a form of artificial skin that the makeup goes over to match his skin tone. There is a protective layer of gauze that's laid over the wound that will not only help it heal, but provide a barrier against the magic of the 'skin' that goes over it. It will form itself perfectly to his body and make it not appear that anything is off. Then you put the makeup over it. I had a special one made that will match his skin tone perfectly on its own. Once he's awake, I'll have to show him how to apply it, obviously, though there are instructions, but this will work until it's healed enough he can use a glamour or some other means to cover it.”
To Tom, that sounded about as good as they were going to get and he nodded, pleased. “When he comes around, I'll get you then you can show him what to do.”
“I can do that,” Narcissa smiled, giving a nod of her head.
Looking around, he said, “Let's go through the plan once more to make damned sure we have everything in place.” Looking at Barty, he motioned for the man to start then listened intently.
Standing in the time turner closet with Snape, Barty took the one there and draped it over both their necks. Looking back at their Lord and Lucius, he gave a shaky nod. “We're ready.”
“Be careful,” Voldemort warned. “If there are any problems, get in touch with me. If you can't reach me, get Snape or Thor to help you get out. Don't take any untoward risks with this.”
“I will,” Barty nodded firmly. Clutching tightly to the box of chocolates, he looked at Lucius then said, firmly, “Alright, hit me with it.”
Stepping forward, Lucius shot the spell at Barty. Instantly, the man took on the look of someone that had been hit with a Confundus, though slightly more befuddled than normal.
Pleased with the results, Voldemort looked at Snape and said, “Go. Thor and Draco should be waiting for you. Any problems, don't hesitate to get into contact.”
Giving a firm nod, Snape replied, “I will, my lord.” Taking the time turner, he rolled it back the required number of turns and waited for time to catch up then Apparated the two of them away.
Watching the two vanish, Tom rubbed his eyes. Shaking his head, hoping that it all went as planned, he looked at Lucius then said, “I believe that's all I need you for tonight. If something arises, I'll summon you.”
“Anything you need, my lord,” Lucius replied. Then, with a respectful bow, went to find his wife to head home. It had been a long and trying day, so rest was needed.
Watching Lucius go, Tom let out an internal sigh then headed back towards the family wing. He doubted much sleep was going to happen tonight, but he needed to try to get some rest. Perhaps, he and Black could take turns sitting up with Harry while the other slept. That might work and it would give them both some much needed shut-eye.
Landing in one of the tunnels, the first thing Snape did after making certain he had a good grip on the unsteady Crouch was send off a ball of light to illuminate the tunnel. Once it was lit well enough, he activated the map. Pleased to see that Thor and Draco were waiting for him like they were supposed to and that his past self was down in his private quarters as had been planned, he made his way in that direction.
Getting to the statue at the end, he tapped it with his wand and watched it open. Stepping out, looking around, cautious, though he knew from the map that no one but Thor and Draco were there, he then lowered his voice and said, “We need to start making our way to the dungeons. The note was passed off as planned?”
Stepping forward, putting one of 'Harry's' arms around his shoulder to steady him and handing off the box of chocolates to Draco, Thor said, “Everything is as ready as we can get it.”
Handing over the copies of the map to both Thor and Draco, passing the one off for 'him' as well, he said, looking at a determined Draco, “Go get McGonagall. Tell her what we planned. We'll get him down to the dungeons. Tell her to meet us there. Just make sure to give us time to get down there and a reasonable amount so that I can supposedly figure out what is going on.” Taking the chocolates back, tucking them under his arm, he saw the younger Malfoy nod then take off. Jerking his head in the direction they needed to go, he instructed, “Let's get moving.” Keeping a firm grip on Crouch, they began to make their way towards the dungeons.
Keeping the map out to make sure they didn't run into anyone, Thor directed them towards a side passage to avoid a couple students. Though he had plenty of questions about just what was going on, something the instructions he had received had promised, he wasn't going to ask them right now. That could wait until the following day when he was assured they would be filled in. Right now, all they had to make sure of was to get 'Harry' down to the dungeons and follow Snape's lead in what was to come. There was plenty riding on this, that's for damned sure, and there couldn't be any slip-ups.
Standing in his classroom with Thor, McGonagall, Dumbledore, Poppy and Draco, hoping like hell his past self stayed quiet in his chambers, Severus pointed to the box of chocolates on his desk. “I tested it. Someone slipped Potter Amatoria Coagmentation in some chocolates and sent it to him in the guise of that Nick. From my tests, it's aged as well, meaning he's going to be out of it, even after the antidote.”
Smoothing down his beard, shaking his head, Albus looked at the chocolates. “You have the antidote, don't you, Severus?”
“I have it,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “I was waiting for your and Poppy's approval to give it.” Shoving the chocolates toward the medi-witch so she could run the test, he said, “I've already doubled checked them to make sure, but that's the reading coming back.”
“You have him isolated?” Minerva asked, rubbing her eyes under her glasses in a tired way, shaking her head.
“In the room next to my quarters. I've spelled it shut so that only I can get in for now,” Severus confirmed.
Testing the chocolates, mouth pursed, Poppy said, “It's Amatoria Coagmentation. Give him the antidote, Severus.” Looking around, she asked, “Any idea who sent them or what the phrase might be?”
“I have no idea,” Severus said, with a shake of his head. “The card says Nick, but we can all safely assume that the man probably didn't send them. The phrase could be anything as we don't know who did this.”
Sighing, Minerva said, “I'll have his things sent down to the room with an elf and keep his friends away. We can try to trace who sent them, but it's doubtful we'll come up with anything. How long will he have to stay isolated?”
“A week, minimum,” Severus told her firmly. “At the week mark, I'll check to see if there are any lingering side effects. He may be slightly out of it and tired after that if the effects have waned, but he should be fine with no lingering after effects that will cause problems.”
Glancing at the innocuous looking box of Honeydukes chocolates, Albus shook his head. “I'll take them with me. Between Minerva and Filius, they may be able to determine who sent them. It's doubtful, but we can try.”
“The potion—there is no way it could have been brewed here, is there Severus?” Minerva asked, looked at Snape.
“No,” Severus told her with a firm shake of his head. “It not only takes too long, the only ones capable of taking on one this volatile and complex are my seventh years. None of them would try, I wouldn't think. Where they would even come up with it, I don't know. Even in the restricted section, there aren't any books with this one in it. Which means it had to be purchased elsewhere.”
“I doubt many of our students would even want to try something like this. The only ones I can think of would be younger ones that aren't aware of the effects of it. Then, how they would get it, I don't know. Very few places sell it. The ones I do know won't give up the list of people that bought it either,” Albus told them. Looking at Draco, who he was told was the one that found Harry staggering down the hall, he asked, “You didn't see anyone around?”
“No,” Draco told him with a firm shake of his head. “I was just starting Prefect rounds when I happened to come across him not far from the dorms. He was mumbling all kinds of things that made no sense and acting like he was drunk. Professor Rowle was close by and I managed to get Potter to him.” This was the line that he had been fed to give and, hopefully, he wasn't going to be asked too many questions. He could think on his feet, no doubt there, but didn't want to make up any details that might come back to bite him later.
“When Draco grabbed me, I sent him for Severus as there was something really off there. Mr. Potter has never even given a hint that he drank anything stronger than butterbeer. This was really strange,” Thor added, looking around.
“That was a good observation, both of you,” Albus told them with a nod. “Alright, we'll go from here. Minerva, let the other professors know Harry won't be in classes this week.” Seeing her nod, he looked at Severus, “Can you take charge of monitoring the room and if he needs anything? You're closer and can get there faster than I can.”
Though scowling and looking thunderous at that, something that would be expected of him, Severus nodded. Crossing his arms over his chest, he told the man, tone icy, “I will. Just keep everyone away, and I do mean everyone. Without a clue as to what that code phrase is, anything that might be said can trigger it. That we don't want to deal with.”
“I will,” Albus told him with a nod and sigh. “I'll have one of the elves tend to whatever he needs and his meals, but ensure they don't come in contact with him.”
“Just not Dobby,” Severus said, thinking quickly. The elf would know something was off if he did take on that duty then Dumbledore would know in seconds. After that, he would be down investigating. No, they didn't need that. “He's too fixated on Potter and might, inadvertently, come in contact.”
“I'll get one of the others,” Albus told him. Rubbing his eyes in a tired way, he said, “Check on him a few times here and there, Severus and let us know if anything is needed. We'll take the chocolates and go from there.”
Nodding, Severus said nothing, waiting. This was going well and he wanted it to stay that way.
Walking back into the room he shared with Harry after Severus reported in, was given a story to feed to Albus and went back to the castle, Tom was tired. It had been a long and trying day. Seeing Black still there, though looking like he was dozing off then startled when he stepped in, he said, “I thought we would take shifts staying up with him. Just sleep in the room next door for the night. I'll take the first two hours and you the second then so on. That way one of us is here all the time if he comes around, acts like he's in pain or whatever. If he comes around, I'll send an elf for you.”
Though wanting to stay with Harry until he woke up, Sirius could see the sense in this. He was tired and needed rest. “I can work with that.”
“I'll send an elf in a couple hours to wake you then I'll take a nap,” Voldemort said to the man, walking over to the bed.
After giving Harry's hand a squeeze and leaning down to whisper what the plan was then giving his head a stroke, Sirius stood, stretching. Shaking his head, he said, “Have 'em get me in a couple. If you need anything, yell.”
Nodding to the man, Tom said nothing. Waiting until Sirius left, he discontinued the transformation then sighed. Stepping over to the bed, he gently moved Harry around and seated himself then put his young lover's head in his lap. Gently running his fingers through Harry's hair, he said, softly, “I'm here, Harry.” He assumed, since he could get through to Harry through their connection, that he would hear him.
Leaning his head back, resting it on the wall, he shut his eyes. His thoughts right now were chaotic and there was so much going on that he found it hard to focus. Nor did he want to meditate in case Harry came to slightly.
The first thing his mind circled to was that damned rat. Oh yes, Wormtail was going to pay! Already he had something in mind that would work quite nicely for that and Harry would probably enjoy the hell out of it. He also wanted to know just what the hell the man was thinking when he pulled this stunt! He doubted it would make sense, like Black said, but he wanted to know why. Along with that, the retribution that would come was not only going to be done by Harry, something he was now firm on, but in a very public way. Most of his Death Eaters knew better than to even think to pull a stunt like this, but he wanted to make damned sure that they knew the price they paid would be high if they attempted something so foolish.
His next thought was kicking himself for not even having considered that something like this could happen. No, not the assassination attempt, but that something would come up to make it to where Harry might not be able to make it back to the castle. Neither of them had thought that possible since they had it down to a science and it had worked well, becoming second nature. That meant he was going to get with Harry to hammer out something in case this happened again. He wasn't sure what, honestly, but they would come up with something as they always managed.
Reaching up and rubbing his eyes with one hand, he let out a tired sigh. The adrenaline he had been running off of was starting to wane and he was now tired. He wasn't going to let himself fall asleep though. There was still too much to deal with for him to allow himself to do that. Looking down at Harry when he dropped his hand, for the first time since the whole mess started, there was a tightening of his gut over what could have come. He doubted, because of the horcrux in Harry's scar that even if he had taken the Killing Curse without the cloak that he would have really died. However, what this had done was hit home a very real fact; that Harry, despite how good he was at what they were doing, was mortal and he could lose him. As he hadn't let anyone close to him in his long life, this hit him particularly hard. He didn't even want to think about his lover's mortality or the fact that he could lose him. No, that wasn't a good thing! Harry was someone he needed in so many ways anymore and was sure if he lost him that he wouldn't handle it well. That he couldn't let happen.
Pondering the problem, the easiest solution came to mind. It could work and it would give Harry the same kind of extended life he had without the fear of losing him. He just didn't know how Harry would react to the situation or if it could be managed because of what was in his scar. He was going to look into it, though, and find out. Because he wasn't going to take even the slightest chance that he could lose his young man.
Giving Harry's hair a gentle tug as he looked at his passive face, something he knew Harry adored, he felt his heart clench painfully at the mere thought of losing him to this damned war in some way. No, that wasn't going to happen, he would ensure that! Sighing, he said, softly, “Wake up soon, Harry.” Then he tried to direct his thoughts to something more productive as he continued to run his fingers through Harry's hair.
A special thanks to Tenchi as she went in and had to do something different with this than normal because I broke my friggin' glasses this weekend and am rather blind without them. So, it took some extra work on her end, something I thank her for. Thanks, woman! You're the best!
