Chapter 4
Going down to the basement where he knew Harry was, Remus looked around with a pleased smile as he descended to the floor. This was very nice indeed! Not only did all of it simulate a beach setting, rather than look like a pool, but the elves had even put up lights that gave off plenty of heat, making it feel like the temperature you would have at the beach. It was wonderful! Though it wasn't the same as the one in California, something none of them could create for Harry, it was enough to give him some pleasure. It was all they could hope for with this.
Seeing Harry look up at him from where he was sprawled on his stomach on one of the comfortable chairs, he made his way in that direction. Giving Harry a kiss before taking a seat in the chair by him with a soft groan, he settled back with a contented sigh. “This is quite nice, isn't it? I'm going to have to remember to shed the robes before I come down, however. It's a tad too hot down here for them.”“It's great,” Harry said, flopping his head back down on his folded arms. His phone was on the 'sand' down by his chair at the moment and he was resisting the urge to pick it up, though he glanced at it. He had something on it that calculated the time difference, so he knew that his friends in California were still in bed. After all, they had to go to school, they were in either their final year of high school or were in uni, in the morning. It was just odd to be without them or in such a different time zone that he had to calculate when to call.Seeing where Harry had glanced, Remus gave a sad smile. Scooting his chair closer, he put a hand on Harry's head then stroked it softly. While he didn't say a word, he knew Harry understood what he was going for.Sighing and looking at Remus, Harry asked, “Where's Sirius?” He didn't assume he went out of the house on his own, of course, but he was curious.“Up tending to what looks like a small mountain of paperwork. Since he was already swearing rather colorfully, I thought it best to leave him alone,” Remus explained with a small smile.Knowing just what Sirius was like and that it was probably wise to leave him alone if he was already cussing it out, Harry grinned then shook his head. “I have a feeling we're going to hear plenty of that before this is over.”“Oh, I imagine so,” Remus told him, smile growing. “While the solicitors will tend to much of it, I'm sure there will end up plenty he has to do as well. I've already agreed to take on parts to reduce our ears getting blistered by the barrage, but he has to take on some. It just means that he'll end up expanding your knowledge of curse words.”“I've learned plenty over the years. I might not use them, but I sure know them,” Harry laughed, shaking his head. Sitting up, he groaned then grabbed his bottle of butterbeer. Taking a sip, he asked, “You down here just to relax or did you need something?” He assumed it was the latter as Remus didn't tend to like baking like he did. Unless he was taking a swim for exercise or they were mucking about, he didn't join him much. There were times, of course, especially when he wanted to sit outside and read, but there were usually too many of his friends around for Remus to get the quiet he wanted.Looking around, Remus told him, “Well, no, I wasn't planning to at the moment, but I probably will more often. This is rather nice. And it's not nearly as hot down here as it was in California.” Snorting softly, he smiled again then added, “We won't discuss the multitude of teenage girls in very skimpy swimwear and the noise that comes along with them.”Reaching out to rub Harry's head to assure him that he hadn't minded either of those parts one little bit, he sighed then added, “I came down to let you know I'm going out for a while. I have the list of bits and bobs all of us want, so I'll be tending to that. On the itinerary is the shipment of several cases of butterbeer to the aforementioned gaggle of teenage girls. Sirius was rather firm in his insistence of them getting those.” Hearing Harry chuckle, he smiled again then sobered up and added, “I'm also going to visit a few people to see which way the wind is blowing with so much. At least try to start getting information. That we need. I won't poke too much, of course, as it's not needed when it deals what might be coming with you and their search for you, but we want some information of what's going on. That I can manage, easily, without anyone thinking there is something odd or lying.”“Be careful,” Harry told him softly, brow drawn down in worry already.“Oh, I will. That I assure you in no uncertain terms,” Remus told him softly, hand drifting down to give Harry's shoulder a squeeze. “I know where I'm going and how to manage this. There will be no unnecessary chances, Harry. In fact, I plan to get in and out of areas where our kind congregate as fast as I can manage. The one I'm going to see about information doesn't live among our kind anyway, so I should be fine. The rest is in Muggle areas. Those shouldn't be a problem. Even then, I'm going to get what I need as fast as I'm able. As I'm now far more used to dealing with Muggles and their stores, though the ones here in the UK are different than the ones in the States, I'll manage that quite nicely. I also plan to scope out what's around here close to us. Before I come home, I'll stop to pick us all up lunch.”Snorting softly, smiling once more, he said, “Prepare yourself for the fact that I'm getting Sirius curry. It's my hope that if I do it for lunch that it'll have worked its way mostly through his system before bedtime tonight, so we aren't in danger of waking to the noxious fumes it causes.” Hearing Harry laugh at that and agree, he then added, softly, smiling once more, “And your cappuccino machine arrived. I'll pick up the UK version of what you need for it, but I already have an order off for the State's version. It'll just take but a few days to get it here, then all will be normal for that.”“Good,” Harry smiled at him. That he wanted and was one of those bits he didn't want to do without. Sobering up, he said, “Just be careful. We get it's coming out, but we've also heard how bad this is. Even the Prophet says it is and we know it understates the severity of everything.”“I'm aware,” Remus agreed with a nod. “Keep in mind that I know what I'm doing, Harry. That will keep me safe. If it looks like something catastrophic is coming, I'll summon an elf and have them bring me back here. Nothing to worry about. This is actually easier on me than what we had to do to hide over the years. That's not something I need concern myself with or worry what will happen if it's revealed that I'm around. All I have to do is keep an eye out for some people. One of the things I plan to get caught up on is who we need to worry about, beyond the obvious ones that followed You-Know-Who during the last war. That concerns me more than most other bits. If we don't know, we can't be alert.”“That we need,” Harry admitted with a sigh, already hating what might come of this and how bad it could get. They all thought the years of watching over their shoulders had finally ended, other than for the most basic sort of thing. Now they had to do it again and it was because of extreme danger. That he didn't like. Sitting up and leaning over, he gave Remus a soft kiss. “Just get back here safe. That's all that matters to us. Anything else—we can do without it.”Putting a hand on the back of Harry's head, Remus kissed him tenderly then, when he broke it off, assured him, “I will, never fear. Don't overly concern yourself. Remember, I've been in and out of the country several times since it started and know what I'm doing.”“Can't help it,” Harry told him with a small smile.“I know,” Remus told him. “Comes with the loving someone part, just don't let it make you mental. If there's a problem, I know how to get myself out of it. Keep that in mind.” Sliding over and taking a seat by Harry, he began asking if there was anything special he wanted for lunch or for him to pick up. It wouldn't soothe all the fears to sit here and do this, but it might help some. Holding Harry close, he asked about the food that he knew Harry favored so see if he forgot anything, something he hoped would get Harry to focus away from him going out.
Shoulders shaking, Harry leaned against the doorjamb and crossed his arms over his chest, a huge grin on his face at what he saw. Sirius was sitting at the desk in the study they had set up with his head on it, moaning morosely. That was enough to tell Harry he was about at the end of what he could take when it came to paperwork. If everything he knew about such displays held true, Sirius had already gone through the stages of mild swearing, progressed to severe swearing then beyond that to swearing in other languages and all but stabbing his quill through the parchments as he did whatever before finally moving to the brain melting stage. This was the usual display of the last one. Which meant he needed a break.
Remus had been gone about an hour now, so he was twitching himself, nervous over what could happen, so he couldn't just lounge by the pool as his mind was all over about the worst of the possibilities. Rather than just sit down there and make himself mental, he came up to see what Sirius was up to. He figured the two of them could find something to do together. Shaking his head as the moaning grew louder and more pitiful, he grinned from ear to ear.Producing a butterbeer, he cleared his throat. When Sirius looked at him, a miserable expression on his face, he held up the drink and said, “I thought you might need a break.”“Damned right I do,” Sirius said, conjuring a chair and motioning him closer. Taking the beverage after Harry sat down, he leaned back and sighed softly. “I can't take anymore, all there is to it.”Looking over the piled up parchments that seemed to have overtaken the desk, he asked, “How much more do you have to do with this mess?”“All of it,” Sirius moaned, head going back. “I've already sent off what I finished. This is all the shite I still have to fill out, write up, check off on, you name it.”“Well, you'll stay busy,” Harry grinned as he sipped his butterbeer. Then he laughed when Sirius shot him the two-fingered salute over it.“Bloody hell,” Sirius breathed, scanning over what was there. “This is—shite! Too much crap here. Remus is going to help with what he can, but some of it is just bullshite that isn't needed as far as I can see. It's just paperwork to be paperwork so the Ministry looks like it's covering everything. It doesn't relate in any way to what we're trying to start. On the upside, though, I got everything filled out that we need for that meeting with Arthur. I also have all the documentation to prove these phones are a Wizard invention, not Muggle one, including the Magical patent that predates Muggles even having cordless phones of any kind. That should be all we need to get this moving. As long as we can prove they aren't a modified Muggle device, we can get the approval.”“Muggles have mobiles now, but they aren't anything close to what we have when it comes to functionality. Even our older ones are more advanced than what they are currently using,” Harry said, sipping his own drink.“Which is good to prove what we need,” Sirius told him with a nod. “I've even got the chart Plato had made up to show, in pictures, the progression of the phones compared to what Muggles are using. More that counts in favor of this going through. Then there's the obvious need for them. Plato can get the basic network set up fast, as he's done it in other countries, but we're betting we'll make a small fortune because the Ministry is going to want this quickly, with all that's going on. They'll have to contract with someone and it'll be Plato as he has the experience in setting up what governments need. So, we'll make a damned fortune off that. Probably more than the standard as he's sure that they'll want it as fast as he can push it. That costs extra, a lot extra. So, we'll manage and the money will end up quite good.”“The faster we get it all done, the quicker we can go home,” Harry nodded, sipping his drink.“My thoughts on the matter,” Sirius admitted. “We'll have the basics set up in under a month and can route the calls through the continent. It's not the best way and there'll be some frustration with parts, as I'm sure it'll end up plenty overloaded, but we'll manage. It's setting up the network here and what it can do beyond that which is the big issue and will take the most time. We're going to hurry this along as fast as we can manage. Plato told me that if he has to have people working twenty-four hours straight and pay whatever, he's going that route. I agree with that, completely. Setting up for the Ministry alone, as I'm sure we can push our version of the landline through right along with it, will take just as much time.”“How sure are you two this will go that way?” He asked. He'd heard plenty, honestly, as he was the first one Plato began asking about the laws in the UK and what they had.It had started right after Marissa 'claimed' him and his first slumber party at their house with all the girls. He had been overwhelmed by it, of course, as he was not used to girls much, let alone having his hair, nails, facials and all those other bits done. Plato had been home and told the girls he needed him for something. Though there had been some whining about that, though the man promised it wouldn't be for long, then led him to his study. Harry hadn't known what to think about that at first and was nervous, wondering if Plato was upset with him being there, though he hadn't said anything when he was invited. He calmed down when they were seated and Plato passed him a soda then grinned, telling him that he thought he needed a break. Harry had appreciated that, more than the man ever knew. For an hour, the man sat and talked to him about all kinds of bits, but then started with the questions about the phones in the UK. It had pressed on from there with each visit until it was beyond what Harry knew. That's when Plato went to Sirius and Remus about it. From those meetings, the venture was born with Sirius, with him and Remus as silent partners, and Plato setting it up to give it a shot. All they were now waiting on was the approval from the Ministry. Nothing could be done until they had that.“We'll get it,” Sirius grinned, stretching out his legs and crossing his ankles. “Their laws are set up just how we need them as we can prove all we have to. These are not classified as Muggle artifacts as Wizards invented then patented them first. That's the only requirement. We just need to get it by Arthur Weasley then we are ready to go. Plato already has a lock on the buildings we need for not only the stores, but warehouses, business offices, maintenance and building, all of it. So, we just need the signature and we're in business. I'm sure some are wondering who bought all the space, as he's kept it as quiet as he can, but we've got it.”“Good,” Harry nodded, leaning over and resting against Sirius. Glancing at the time, he sighed, worried about Remus, but didn't say anything about that. Instead, he told Sirius, “Remus is getting us lunch before he comes back. Even curry for you.”“Wonderful!” Sirius grinned, chuckling. “First time I've had it since coming back. I'll enjoy that.” Sobering up, figuring what was probably bugging Harry, Sirius assured him, “Remus knows what he's doing. You know he's come back several times without us. He knows just what to do, how to go about it, who to go to, what to ask and how to protect himself. If I thought he was in any kind of real danger, he wouldn't be going this alone. He's also made sure that if it looks bad, he'll get himself out of there. Just have faith in that.”“I know, I really do, it's just—you know,” Harry sighed, shaking his head.Slipping an arm around Harry, holding him close, Sirius admitted, quietly, “I do. It wouldn't take much to pull him into a nightmare. We know that. Keep in mind he does as well and will stay on his toes about it. It'll end up fine and he'll be back just as he said he would.” Lowering his voice, he chuckled, “It's hard, no doubt, especially since we're all used to coming and going as we want, but none of us have forgotten how to keep a look out for trouble.”“True,” Harry groaned, remembering how long they had to do that before moving to the States. It wasn't until then that they could stop. Even then, it took time for them to realize they didn't have to do it anymore. Old habits die hard and the mentality was still there, so it wouldn't take much to get used to doing it yet again.“I think this will be the last time he has to go it alone, honestly. We've got that meeting with Arthur in a couple of days. Once I show up for that, everyone is going to know we're all back, including you. I plan to make sure that we attend to everything at the Ministry we have to that day. After that, we're doing all of it together. Not only will we stay safer, but it'll make all of us feel better. That way we can watch over each other.”“I'd feel better doing it that way,” Harry admitted with a sigh.“So will I,” Sirius conceded, nodding. Looking up when he heard the door open, he grinned when he heard Remus call out for them, and he nudged Harry. “Food! Curry! Let's get him.”Laughing, Harry stood, knowing Remus might end up tackled over this, as he trailed after Sirius, shaking his head. He was relieved that Remus made it back, though, that's for sure.
“Remus is back, you say?” Albus asked Alastor. “Did he say why and for how long?” The ex-Auror was in his office delivering the news of the visit, something he was highly curious about.
“He is,” Alastor confirmed with a snort. “He was getting a list of who he needed to watch out for, a wise move of course, since he's been gone for so long. That and getting caught up on what's going on.” Shrugging, he explained, “He said he'd be back for a couple of years. Didn't say why, of course, just that he was. I assumed back looking for work again.”Nodding thoughtfully at that tidbit, Albus pondered it then asked, distractedly, “Did he mention Sirius? I've heard a report that leads me to believe Sirius may have returned as well.”“No, nothing was mentioned about him,” Alastor grunted. “I do have to say that Remus was slightly dodgy about answering some of the more pointed questions. Didn't take that to mean anything rotten, of course, just that he didn't seem to want to talk about it. Maybe Sirius did come back with him and knows something that can help us? I don't know. I’ll leave that up to you to sort, Albus. You might get a bit further with him than I did.”“Let me see what I can manage,” Albus said with a thoughtful nod. “Thank you ever so much, Alastor. Any tidbit of information helps with this mess, as you well know.”“I figured,” Alastor told him, standing with a groan. “Let me get out of here and tend to some of the other things we have to work with.”Nodding to him, Albus watched him go. Waiting for the staircase to start up, he leaned back and twiddled his thumbs. Remus back and that painting being destroyed told him that Sirius probably had returned with him. He was also sure that the two were probably at Grimmauld Place. As secure as that house was, there wouldn't be any getting into it, of course. He also didn't want to spook them by posting people in the park across the street. If they saw someone there, even if they knew them, they would probably take it as the worst, thus putting them on edge. No, that wasn't the way to go about this. Maybe a friendly owl addressed to Remus was in order instead. He could do some fishing that way.Nodding at that, he pulled a blank parchment forward and grabbed his favorite quill. Quickly penning a social note, hoping to enlist Remus, no matter what was going on, he also tried to fish for information. If Sirius and Remus were back, he was sure that meant the two might know Harry's whereabouts. After all, he was positive that's why Sirius didn't return after he was cleared. It was obvious the man was looking for his godson. If the two had returned, it might mean they either knew where Harry was and that he was safe, or he came with them. Either option was good and he could use it. This fight had to end and only Harry could manage that. He just had to get them focused on what was going on, nothing more than that. Once he did, things would press on in a way they hadn’t until now. That they needed as Tom wouldn't know what to do. The more chaos they could cause that side, the faster they could end this. Well, once Harry was involved that was.As he wrote, making sure to keep the tone friendly and not make it sound like he was fishing for information, he decided it was time to find the rest of the Horcruxes. If Harry was back, they needed them gone before he could step up and end this. Yes, he needed to start the hunt. Just in case.
