Chapter 51
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Wandering down to the dungeons, Albus was thinking how he should go about this operation. With what he knew of the potion Harry had accidentally ingested, he might be able to implant some trust in the young man or get answers to some of the issues that were bothering him when it came to Harry. Though he was going to have to get around Severus to do this, he thought he could manage it or, at the very least, come up with a good enough excuse to get the man to let him in. Either one worked, just so he could get with Harry alone for a time. It wasn’t ethical to do this, he knew that, but he doubted Harry did. In the end, like so much anymore, it was a case of it needed done, no matter what it was, to further what had to be in place before he died. No, he couldn't leave as many loose ends as there were now. With that, he reminded himself that he had to get with Bill about his decision. He assumed, like he did with so much, that this wouldn't be a problem. The time was drawing near that the person wanting to take over the mantle of the Light Lord needed to be in place. As it was, he was pressing it close.
Stepping up to the hidden entrance to the room Harry was in, Albus was about to say the override password when Severus appeared before him, looking thunderous. Clearing his throat nervously, Albus told the man, “I was just going to check on poor Harry, Severus. There's nothing to worry about.”Shooting the man a death glare of epic proportions, Severus snarled, crossing his arms over his chest, “No one goes in there, Albus, not even you! You should know that and the reason for it. I can assure you that Mr. Potter is fine and nothing is wrong. I've been checking on him a couple times a day and the elves keep a watch as well. Just let him alone. It's far too dangerous, something you should know.”Sighing, Albus nodded, knowing there would be no getting through the man. “Well, yes, Severus, this is true. It was more for my piece of mind than anything else. I'm sure you understand that. With all that's going on, the need to ensure he's fine is there,” Albus told him softly, glancing at the hidden door.“And you're not going to help anything if Potter fixates on you. Once it completely wears off, it'll make the problems already there worse than what they are. Is that what you want, Albus?” Severus sneered, glowering at the man.Stroking his beard, Albus nodded, “True, very true. No, we can't have that.” With a sigh and another glance at the door, Albus told the dour man, “If there are complications, let me know, if you would, Severus.” Seeing a bare nod from the Potions Master, he then began to make his way back towards his office. He supposed, if he thought about it, Severus was right. If he accidentally came across with the right phrase and Harry did fixate on him, when it wore off, the young man would trust him less than he did now. At this point, that trust problem was a real issue anyway. He didn't need to make it worse than it already was. Though the information he could get would probably be a huge help, he didn't need to muck up what was already a touchy situation even worse than what it was. No, it was best to stay away unless he could come up with something, somewhere, to help. Maybe that's what he should look into.Thinking that over, wondering if there was something, he had a bit more hope as he made his way to his office.
Watching the man go, eyes narrowed, Severus was dead sure he was going to have to keep a closer eye on the man. Though he had foiled this attempt, he was certain others would probably come. Shaking his head, he slipped back into his office then grabbed the letter explaining what developed since this had come to pass before opening the hidden door and stepping into the room where Crouch was staying. Seeing the man sitting up in bed, reading, he nodded. “Albus just tried to get in. I'm going to set up an internal alarm spell to ensure he can't get through if I'm not around. It'll set off for both you and me. If he does get through, pretend to be asleep or something. I'll also alert Thorfinn so he can help.”
Lowering his book, Barty nodded then chuckled, sighing, “I was wondering when he was going to try. With him being the way he is, you knew it had to come.” Seeing a sneer from Severus then a shake of the man's head, he shrugged, “As long as I get a warning, I'm fine. Don't worry about it. I'll pretend to be asleep.” Stopping, he lowered his voice and asked, “Any word on him coming around?” Though that was a vague way to word it, he assumed the man would get what he was asking.Making sure the room was warded well and there were no eavesdropping spells on it, something he was sure Crouch had done but wanted to double check on, Severus nodded when it came back clean then said, “Yes. He's come around, slightly. He's disoriented, but awake. From what I was told, he should improve each day enough that we can get you out of here on time with no one the wiser.”Pleased and relieved, Barty said, “Good. I was worried about that. With him, you just need to give him a few days to get it together and he'll be able to pull it off.” He definitely felt better knowing Harry was recovering. After all, he had been worried about his friend.“I just wanted to let you know so you could be aware,” Severus said. Seeing the man nod, he swept out in case someone decided to come down to see him. They would most assuredly think it was odd if he were in conversing with a coherent Potter.Watching the man go, shaking his head and grinning a little, Barty shifted around to get comfortable. Right now, he was doing fine and reading or finding other things to do. He assumed he would get bored in a few days if he had to keep doing this. It was nice to relax, though, that's for sure! The only thing he really did want was to know just what was going on so he had a clue what to expect when he got back. He would hold off on asking those kinds of questions, though. If their Lord wanted him to know, he would find a way to get him the message.
Unable to help himself, Sirius snickered at the look Harry was giving him, shaking his head just a little. “You know, if I had raised you, you would have gotten anything you wanted out of me with looks like that, Harry.”Grinning a little, Harry then put the mulish look back on his face and huffed, “I need to help.”“I think you need to rest more than you need to help. Tom can handle it on his own for a few days,” Sirius told his godson, crouching down in front of where Harry was sitting on the edge of the bed.Glowering at his godfather, Harry huffed, “I need to help!” He went to cross his arms over his chest, but remembered the burn there before he finished then just let his hands drop to his sides, balling them into fists. He didn't think he could handle just staying in the room all day as he was so used to being busy all the time. No, he wanted to at least try to help.Rubbing his eyes, not sure what to do, Sirius said, “As fuzzy as you are, I don't think that you're going to be much help. Just stay up here and relax. You deserve that anyway.”“No!” Harry snarled, well the best he could anyway. He was still having 'fuzzy problems' and was not able to focus or articulate what he wanted to get out well. Rubbing his eyes, he sighed then shook his head, “I can a little.”Snickering more, shaking his head again, Sirius knew a losing battle when he saw one. Looking completely amused, he said, “How about this—we'll compromise. I'll help you down to the study and stay with you. If he says you can stay and help, we will. If he tells you to come back up here, we'll do that. Work for you, Harry?”Thinking that over, Harry then said. “That works.”Standing, Sirius told him, “Let me get you a robe and your ring. I'll help you. Just—no trying it on your own. You'll hang on to me. If you fall, someone is going to hex the shite out of me for letting you get hurt.”That was something that Harry could work with so he nodded.Shaking his head, Sirius snorted, “He might anyway for even agreeing to this! Just give me a few minutes.” Seeing Harry nod, he went to find what he needed.
Pouring over the mass of papers on his desk, Tom was shaking his head. Thankfully, he didn’t have any meetings this morning. There was also the fact that the practice sessions were canceled until such time as Barty returned. Those eased up what he had to concern himself with right now. Until Harry could help again, he was going to have to shoulder most of this himself as he couldn't farm it out to anyone else.
Tossing aside the parchment with a list of bills that were pending, something he really needed to go through later so he could figure out which to back and which to ensure didn't make it through, he was startled by a knock on the door. Brow furrowed, he leaned back in his chair and beckoned them to come in then waited.Eyes widening when the door opened and Black helped Harry in, he stood then asked, “What's going on? He should be resting.” Giving Harry a firm look, he reiterated, “You should be relaxing in bed.”Giving Tom a mulish look as he leaned heavily on Sirius, Harry told him firmly, “I want to help!”Chuckling at that look, Tom said, “I don't think you're going to be much help.” Glancing at Black, who had a sheepish expression on his face, he sighed and shook his head then observed, “I'm gathering that you couldn't resist that look.”“Uh, yeah,” Sirius said, scratching his head, looking guilty.Shaking his head, Tom said, summoning a chair and putting it next to his, “Help him sit down there. I don't know how much work you'll be able to do, but I can catch you up a little.” Knowing Harry the way he did, he was sure that even just being down here with him and listening to what he told him would make him feel better. Taking a seat himself, he watched Black help Harry into the chair and summon one for himself. Shaking his head once more, he said, “If you get tired, lay down on the couch. No need to overdo anything.”“I will,” Harry assured him, looking over all the papers scattered on the desk. Sighing, he shook his head then asked, “What about school?”“It's being handled,” Tom soothed. “Barty is there in your place and Severus is making damned sure no one can get in to see him. As soon as you're coherent enough to hold your own and deal with Albus, you can resume just what we were doing.”Taking that in, Harry nodded then rubbed his eyes, trying to stay focused. “What about Wormtail?”“He can stew a while longer,” Tom told him firmly, leaning back. “When you're feeling better, we'll figure out why in Merlin's name he tried this foolish stunt then I'll let you handle him.” Glancing at Black, he sighed then added, lowering his voice, “I think it was Titus he was aiming for, at least from what little he said.”“Why am I not surprised,” Sirius mumbled, rubbing his eyes, guilt curdling his stomach. The mere thought that Harry was in this kind of shape because someone had a grudge against him was a sickening thought.“Because he's an imbecile,” Tom sneered, red eyes furious. “It doesn't matter. It'll be handled when Harry is up to it.”“I will,” Harry said firmly, a determined cast on his face. Shaking his head, trying to get rid of the disorientation, something he knew wouldn't work, he then asked, “Anything else I need to know?”“No, nothing,” Tom said, shaking his head. “The rest is just the normal we always deal with. That I'll catch you up with when you need to know it. Tomorrow, if you're in better shape, I'll have Narcissa start working with you on covering the burn. We have something for it you can use until you can apply a glamour or other spell to it. You need to be a little more coherent to do that than you are now.” Giving a soft snort, he said, “She used Titus as a guinea pig for it. That was rather amusing to watch, especially when she would rap him on the head with her wand.”Grinning at that thought, Harry looked at Sirius, who was looking down scratching his chin then asked, “Really?”“Oh yes,” Sirius confirmed, chuckling. “And I'm warning you now, whatever voodoo magic she uses to do that tickles.”Grinning bigger, Harry shook his head.Looking at his lover, Tom said, “If you feel up to it tomorrow, I want you to make your normal rounds at least once. That way, everyone can see you and know you're still around. You don't have to stay and do anything, of course, just be seen. You can lean on Titus as I'm not sure how balanced you'll be.”Liking the thought of getting back into the 'groove', Harry nodded then told him, “I can do that.”“We'll ease you into everything else after that as you improve. For now, just relax. That will help. Don't push it,” Tom cautioned.“I won't,” Harry told him. Looking at the desk, he asked, “What are you doing now?”“Just going through this mass that's here trying to decide what needs handled and what doesn't,” Tom told him with a sigh and shake of his head. Picking up the next parchment, he talked, quietly, to Harry about what it was, as that was something he normally did. He wasn't sure what his young lover would retain from all of it or how well he would process what was said, but it was something normal for them so he was going to continue on.
Sitting up on the Astronomy Tower smoking just before Prefect rounds, Draco was gazing at the sky. This had, for so long, been his escape from the hassles that went on before he had to deal with the other mess. It was his time to relax alone and think about the problems that were in his life. Tonight—it wasn't that way. Instead, he kept glancing at the seat next to him, the one Potter had been occupying for a while now. It wasn't until this mess that he realized that Potter was a really good friend, one he liked having around. Now that he wasn't there, he missed him.
Sighing, looking down, he shook his head and wondered when that happened. Along with that, there was worry. He knew, basically, what was going on; that Potter had taken a curse straight to his chest that caused all kinds of problems. What the curse was and what those problems were, he didn't know. Along with that, he knew that the person isolated wasn't Potter, but not who it was, something wise. Now he was worried. If whatever happened was bad enough that Potter was out of commission and they had to come up with something like this plan, it was really bad. And, he wanted details. He just didn't know how to go about getting them or who to ask. Rightfully so, everyone was going to be closed mouthed about what was going on so what happened didn’t leak out, but he was concerned.Flicking away his butt, he leaned back and shut his eyes, trying to think the whole thing through. He just couldn't come up with anything. The only ones he knew to ask were ones that wouldn't tell him or probably didn't know much more than he did on the topic. And, honestly, if they did know something, they wouldn't say it anyway as they would be afraid of it leaking out. That he could understand. The only thing that came to mind was writing his father to see what he knew. He discounted that, though, as owls could be intercepted. As this wasn't an emergency of some kind, he didn't want to use the other means of communication they had either. All that meant was he would have to sit and wait like everyone else. He hated that.Sighing, he shook his head and lit another fag then inhaled deeply. Hopefully, he would know something soon.
Sitting up in bed that night with Harry's head resting in his lap while he slept, Tom was running his fingers through the young man's hair. Honestly? He was happy that his lover had been so determined to get back into the swing of things today. That proved that Harry was dead serious about what they were doing and was going to keep pushing himself despite what happened. Good.
Smiling as he looked down at Harry, he gave a sigh. There was so much to do still and he had no idea when Harry would be up for it or back to the way he was, if that would ever happen. He assumed, from the goose, it would, but there was a tiny amount of fear there, with how addled Harry still seemed to be, that he would fully come back. Which meant, he had to plan around the unknown and work from there. That he hated doing, that's for damned sure. There was no way around it, though. He just hoped that Harry's determination to get back to doing what he usually does would speed up the process. After all, he, more than anyone else, knew just how determined Harry was when he wanted something.Sighing, leaning his head back against the wall, Tom shut his eyes. Everything was so complex already that he didn't need this spanner tossed into it. He just hoped that Severus was up to the task of ensuring that Albus stayed the hell away from Barty. The mere thought of that deception coming out was one he didn't like and had no way to prepare for. No, in that case, he was just going to trust the two of them to deal with what was there and press on.After moving Harry off his lap, smiling slightly at the discontented grumbles his lover made at being shifted around from his comfortable position, Tom curled up behind the younger man and wrapped an arm around him, pulling him close. Tomorrow—they would see how much better Harry was and go from there. It would work out, it had to.
Sipping at his beer, lounging in the comfortable chair in the room next to the one his godson shared with Tom, Sirius was thinking. The whole bit with Wormtail—yeah, that was what was bugging him the most. Realistically, he knew that Peter had made the choice to do what he did and didn't fully think through whatever plan he had concocted. Hell, anyone with half a brain would know not to pull a stupid arse stunt like that in a room full of people. It was even more foolhardy to cast it at him as Wormtail would be the first suspect. That was Peter, though. Now, it left him feeling guilty that his godson had been so badly hurt by something intended for him. He couldn't shake that, no matter what he did. However, he was working with it. Staying with Harry and helping him was definitely assisting there with that. Plus, it's something he liked doing as he got to spend time with his godson in a way he never had before.
Thinking it all over while sipping at his beer, he shook his head then looked out the window. He knew Harry would want revenge over this and whatever his godson had in mind probably wouldn't be pretty, but he could understand it, nor would he say a word about whatever it was. Between this shite and his parents, he wouldn't blame Harry for anything he did. Hell, he was surprised that Peter had managed to live this long with the way Harry was. Frankly? He understood it too. He, too, wanted revenge on the rat for the hell he had gone through, and not just seeing the man Kissed over it either.Draining the last from the bottle and chucking the empty into the bin, he leaned fully back and shut his eyes. Part of him, after having thought over so much of what his godson had talked about and what he had seen so far, was wondering if Tom didn't have this all right. After all, much of it made sense. No, he didn't like the methods here, that's for damned sure, but he could understand why it was being done this way. With the stigma attached to so much of anything to do with Dark magic, they wouldn't manage to straighten anything out through normal channels. In fact, there would probably be mass hysteria if they tried. Which meant they had to go about it another way. What Tom and Harry were doing was working. He supposed that's all that mattered in the end. After all, from what he was seeing, the Light side wasn't as pure as they professed themselves to be. Albus was living proof of that.Shaking his head, he stood and stretched. He was going to lie down, even though he knew that sleep wouldn't come. Making his way to the bathroom to change, he sighed as the line 'Light becomes Dark' ran a loop through his head. No, sleep wasn't going to come, but he needed to try. Something was telling him that whatever the hell that prophecy meant was something that would mean he had to protect his godson even more than he did now. And he had to be on his toes for that.
