Chapter 58
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
Flopping onto the couch in the cottage Sirius lived in, Harry asked, “What's up?” Sirius had sent an elf for him, saying there was something important they needed to discuss. That had him slightly on edge. So far, Sirius was dealing with what was going on fine. You could tell he had issues with a few that were around, like Bella, but was dealing. He was trying to keep his godfather away from those that might set him off, but there were times they had to interact. When they did, he kept it as short as possible. From what he could tell, there didn't seem to be issues with that.
“This,” Sirius sighed as he handed over a letter he had gotten earlier in the day. “That came for me when I was coming back from having a pint down at the pub in the village. It caught me just before I came though the wards. You need to see it.”Taking the letter, brow furrowed, Harry wondered what was going on. A quick read through made him groan. Tossing it on the coffee table, he shook his head. “The old goat is just trying to get in my good graces again. I'm guessing that he knows I've not signed up to stay in the castle over break.”“My thoughts as well,” Sirius nodded. Quietly, he added, “This is one I'm not sure what to do with. On one hand, if I don't respond and fall for it, he's going to get suspicious. On the other, I can't face that, Harry. No more. That house—I wish it would burn to the ground. I never want to step foot back in it as long as I live.”Sighing, Harry nodded. “I understand completely. I'm not sure what to do here either, honestly. There's no doubt this is just another of his manipulations of all of us. Because I'm sure if I take him up on the offer, the house will end up packed to the rafters with all the people he thinks are closest to me so he gets in my good graces by ensuring I have a happy Christmas. That's not something I want to face either, honestly. We have plans over Yule, that's for sure, but I wanted to relax for a while. This year has been supremely stressful. I couldn't do that at Grimmauld Place.” Shaking his head, he leaned it back, shutting his eyes, trying to think what to do.“Harry, I vote we don't fall for this,” Sirius told him. “I get it's going to look odd, but I don't like being manipulated. I get you have appearances to keep up and to make it look like nothing suspicious is going on, but this—I flat out don't like it.” Quietly, he added, “Remus is backing away too. He said that plainly. From what he said, he's planning on staying right where he is. Oh, he doesn't want to come to your side, he said that. I think, maybe, he would reconsider if Fenrir wasn't involved, but he's done with Dumbledore as well. That's all there is to it. And he's staying away. The old man has tried getting in touch with him as well to lure him back for the hols. Which tells me he's plotting something more than just getting back in your good graces.”“It does,” Harry said, straightening up, trying to think. As he had delivered the letter from Remus to Sirius a couple of days ago, he knew how his godfather knew what he did. This was working out well. It wouldn't seem odd to anyone that Remus was writing to him, so the letter was transfigured into something else then he would undo it and pass it along. The same would go with Sirius sending them back. Shaking his head after pondering it, he said, “Let me get with Tom and see what he says. I'm going with your thought of I don't want to do this. It's—bad news. That's all there is to it. I don't want to fall into anything that old man is cooking up.”“Me either,” Sirius said honestly. “Look, I don't like how Tom is going about what he's doing or some of who are involved, but at least he's straight up about it. You know what you're dealing with there. Albus—I'm sick of that shite, all there is to it. This sneaking around, meddling, manipulating, all of it, is no better that anything Tom has done. And I want no part of it. Even if it's just over the hols.”“I agree,” Harry nodded. “Let's see what Tom says and go from there. This is one—I don't know, Sirius. I really don't.”“Let me know what he says this afternoon before we have that meeting with him,” Sirius said. “I'm going to have a letter for you to send out when you get back to school anyway.”Figuring the letter was to Remus, Harry nodded. “No problem. I'll send it out.” Groaning, he said, “Let me take this letter to Tom and see what he says. Then I'll get with you to work out whatever. It's—I just don't know, Sirius.”“It's a cluster fuck, I get that,” Sirius snorted. “Just—make it clear I don't want to be there, Harry. I know he would think that the two of us would jump at the chance, but I don't want to do this. Even to help you keep up your cover.”“And I'll make sure he knows that as well,” Harry nodded. Standing, he said, “I'll let you know what he thinks later and how we should go about this.” Seeing his godfather nod, Harry walked out, mentally snarling at the old goat for putting them in this position.
Blowing out a breath as he looked at the letter from Albus on his desk, Tom then lifted his eyes and glanced at Harry. “This—I don't know. I really don't. For now, how about we leave it. I get that the old goat just happened to time it right for it to get in Sirius' hands, but we can go several ways with this.”
“He doesn't want to do this, Tom,” Harry told him, leaning back in his chair and crossing his ankles. “And I don't want to force him to either. It's a nightmare waiting to happen, for both of us. Because I'm damned sure it'll be more than just me and him there.” Shaking his head, he added, “Honestly? I need a break, Tom. I really do. I get we'll be busy over the hols, like always, but it's a kind of busy I can handle. Our end is the one I don't have to put up an act over. I can be me. And I get to spend time with you. That I want. This—he's plotting something and I'm going to walk right into it if we go there. I don't like that either because I won't have the out I do at school to deal with it. If I'm there, you won't be able to help if he pulls me into something. Yeah, we could talk through the link, but it's not the same as what we're doing now. I don't like that. I really don't. The last time we were separated was those few days before school. This will be far longer. We both know that the old man can pull a lot off in that time.”“Another point to consider as well,” Tom said with a nod, brow furrowed. “While we can explain your absence here in a few ways, most are swift enough to get that it's coinciding with the Yule break at school. I don't like that either. The same with you being gone for that length of time.” Drumming his fingers on the desk, he said, tone distracted, “I say tell Sirius to not do anything yet with this. Give us a few days to see what we can come up with. If the old goat says something to you, throw him off a bit with something, like seeing if Nick can stay with you. With what we have planned tomorrow night, that wouldn't look odd. He's not going to like that.”“Let me see what I can manage. I'll wiggle something to put it off. We'll go from there,” Harry sighed. Quietly, he added, brow drawn down, “Do you get the feeling that this is a set up of some kind? That he's trying for a big play? I'm not sure how much time he has left, but it can't be much by now. And he's in a tight spot. Which has to mean he's desperate. We both know what desperate men are like and what they might pull.”“You're right,” Tom agreed with a nod, rubbing a long finger over his upper lip. “I'll call Severus in tonight and see what he has to say on the matter. I'm sure he knows more than either of us about what's going on. If he doesn't know, he may have a way to find out. I'll get his report and factor that in. Though, the more I think about it, the less I like this. For now, lets go with stalling the best we can. The events coming are going to throw him more off. And once that happens, I'm not sure what he's going to try.” Looking at his lover, he asked, “Your solicitor has everything in place?”“I signed the last of the papers when he came to the castle. The only thing left is the court hearing. He's setting that up as we speak. From what he said, over Yule break is what he's trying for.” Harry confirmed.Pleased with that, Tom nodded. “That means we have everything in place we need before tomorrow night. Good.” Thinking it over, he said, “I'm a bit on the fence about Severus coming with us. On one hand. I want him to see what your life was like, even though we both know it won't change anything with him. On the other, though, when it comes out what we did, and Albus will know in minutes, he's going to guess Severus was there. Which could lead to issues.”“Have him there, but don't have him cast spells,” Harry said with a shrug. “That way he can report in like the lemming he appears to be for the old man. And give up plenty of information. That way he does get to see what you want him to observe. Let the old goat figure it out. That can only help drive him more into desperation as his plans get completely thrown off. My solicitor is supposed to be at the school in minutes after it's confirmed. If what you have planned with Lucius works well, so will Fudge. That will leave him scrambling and he's not going to bother with too much else while he figures out what they're going to do.”“Very true,” Tom said, pleased. “Yes, Severus needs to be there. All there is to it. I think I'll assign him to helping keep an eye on Bella and a couple of others that are still slightly unstable. That way he can see what we want him to see and still be of use.” Happy with that, he said, tone slightly distracted, “I'm slightly worried about Sirius' reaction to what we're going to do, Harry. It's one thing for him to know ahead of time, but another to see what you plan to do. I think if you weren't directly involved and just watching, he wouldn't be a problem other than to get angry over some of what might come out. With you leading it, though me being there, and planning for some revenge for what they did to you, he might not like this. And we don't need him being set off during this,.”Pondering that, Harry sighed then said, “Let me talk to him. We've discussed it a little and he knows what's coming. I think, finally, he's accepted that I'm not the good little boy everyone thought I was. And he gets why I'm this way. I'll get with him again, though. Because I want him there, Tom. Him and Barty are the two I trust most to cover my back. You've made that clear you want that. And with all that's coming, he needs to get used to it.”“He does,” Tom conceded. “I'll trust you to make sure he doesn't go off during this. We'll work out something if he can't handle it.”“If Vernon or Petunia start with their usual stupidity, he's not going to object too much. Then if we make damned sure he sees that cupboard I had to live in, it'll be better. I think we need to make sure he's slapped in the face with what they are like and that Dumbledore left me there for him to not be a problem.”“This is an area I'll have you handle personally. We have the meeting this afternoon with the two of them, so we'll make sure there isn't a problem.” Tom said with a nod.“I say we make it clear that if he feels he can't deal with it, to go outside and keep an eye out. We do need someone to watch as we know something is going to get set off somewhere and the alert will go up,” Harry told him.“Good plan,” Tom said, pleased. “We'll go with that. I have someone in mind to keep watch, but another would be good as well.”“You need to make sure Lucy gets to the Ministry before this sets off anything there,” Harry said with a grin. “It's going to look odd if he isn't and turns up right after it happens.”Snorting at that name and grinning slightly, Tom said, “I'll handle it. We're going to use the time turner to make sure he gets there. Don't worry. This is one I'm sure he'll get just right. He's still in the mode of making up for his mistakes.”“Good,” Harry nodded. “There is so much that can go wrong with this operation that we need as much in place as we can get.”“This I know well,” Tom told him, reaching over to run his fingers through his lover's hair. Smirking, he gave a tug then waited.Grinning at that, Harry looked at him and shrugged. “I can't help it. It's the first time you've had me lead anything. You'll be there, I know that, but it's stressful.”“No more than what we did at Azkaban. And that was far riskier. Keep that in mind. If I didn't think you could do this, I wouldn't have you lead it,” Tom told him bluntly.“Very true,” Harry said, still grinning.“Think of it as you're finally giving payback for all they did to you. Its past time they reaped what they have sown.”“Another true statement,” Harry said with a bigger grin. “I'm looking forward to this.”“I don't blame you a bit for that,” Tom admitted. After another soft tug of his lover's hair, he let it loose then began going over other bits that they had to handle in other areas. They had Barty and Sirius coming in soon, so he wanted parts covered before then.
“What I want from both of you is to stick to Evan like there is a charm on all of you. I don't want you participating, just watching out for him. Let the rest of us take care of business,” Tom told Sirius and Barty. Shifting around in his chair, leaning forward and putting his elbows on his desk, he said, “I'll be there, as will plenty of others that can take care of what we need. I just want you two watching out for him, nothing more.”
“Easily handled,” Barty said with a firm nod.“Same here,” Sirius agreed.Looking at Sirius, he said, “If you can't handle what's going on, step outside. I have a couple others that will be keeping watch. Just join them. I think, though, once you realize just what went on in that house, you should be fine. Let Evan tend to matters the way he sees fit. We need this, desperately, to protect him. That's all there is to it. What's coming from it will make it to where Albus can't force him into anything anymore. His manipulations of so much will end. We have plenty in place so we can push that.”“Understood,” Sirius nodded. Already, he was wary of this and wasn't sure if he could handle what he knew was coming. He had seen what Harry could do to someone because of Wormtail, but this was bound to be worse. With what he knew went on in that house and the anger Harry directed to his so-called family, he was sure that he would see plenty from his godson he wouldn't like. He would deal accordingly, though. Protecting Harry was his priority and that's what he was being asked to do. So, he would handle it.Figuring that's all that needed said on the matter, Tom then focused on Barty. “Is everyone that we want along up for this or are there a few that we need to exclude?”Sighing, Barty thought it over then told Voldemort, “While there are a couple that are iffy, such as Bella, because of their mental states, I think that we need to let them participate. Doing something such as this can only help them. It's a case of for the first time since leaving Azkaban, they are once more participating in a cause they believe wholeheartedly in and paid for. That can only do them good. With you along, I believe they should be fine. They might be rusty still as practicing with dummies isn't the same as doing a real mission, but I think they'll rise to the occasion once more. I think, despite some doubts about a couple, that they should be fine once we get going. Just expect a few small issues. Nothing that would endanger the mission, of course, but more in the form of some over enthusiasm with it. A word from you should be all it'll take to calm them down.” Glancing at Harry, he added, “I also think seeing Evan leading this and pulling it off will only aid in whatever doubts that may still linger with a few of them. In the long run, that'll be more help than anything else.”Thinking that over, Tom nodded, “I'll make sure to keep an eye on them. Evan will tend to what's needed and direct, I'll focus on them and make sure they don't pull something foolish.”“What kind of timeline are we looking at for the operation, if I may ask,” Barty inquired, wanting to make sure he was prepared.“I would think no more than a half an hour,” Tom told him. “With the wards gone, the alarm won't go out quickly, so we have time. We just need to stay alert.” With that, he had Evan start to give the rundown of what they wanted to do and how he wanted the operation to go. That way the two had a feel for what they might need to watch out for. He didn't expect spells flying in all kinds of directions like there would in an all out battle, but it was always good to be cautious. Especially when dealing with people that were rusty in a battle situation.
Lying on his side in bed, Tom traced the scar that now graced Harry's chest. As it was completely healed, he didn't risk causing him pain anymore. Pondering just what that could mean for them and what it signaled, well, more than they already knew, he wasn't sure what to do about it. Shaking his head, he asked, “You're not overly worried about the operation, are you?”
“I'm good,” Harry nodded, looking down to watch what Tom was doing. “Actually, I'm more worried about whatever stupid scheme Dumbledore is cooking up than I am this.”“Smart man,” Tom smirked, reaching up to give Harry's hair a tug. “I think he's more of a concern than anything else right now. Let's see if we can get some hints from Severus.”“We need something as I'm sure he already has a plan in place. I get that he's had plenty thrown off with some of it, but you know he won't let that deter him.”“It won't. If nothing else, he's persistent,” Tom snorted. Leaning down, he gave Harry a soft kiss then slipped his arm over Harry's chest and pulled him close. “I think we're more than a match for him and anything he might pull. It just means we have to stay alert and think on our feet, nothing more. That and see how much we can throw him off. The more of a tailspin we put him in, the better off we're going to be.”“Which means it's time to get creative,” Harry chuckled, pressing tighter to his lover.“Oh, I somehow think we can manage that,” Tom told him looking more than a tad smug. “We've done a brilliant job thus far, so we can keep right on going. Tomorrow night is going to send him scrambling.” Figuring that was enough of that, he leaned down and kissed Harry again.Putting a hand on the back of Tom's head, Harry kissed him back relishing the feelings it produced. When Tom broke it off, he chuckled and said, “Nick and me getting married over the hols might send him into a panic. Not to mention most of the damned school.”Thinking that over, Tom chuckled, “That's something I need to think on as Nick doesn't really exist. You're right, though, it would. And you could manage as you'll be a legal adult.” Looking down at his lover, he added, softly, “I rather like that idea as well. Let me see what I can find on what it takes and whether it would register my real name. That I'm not sure of.”“It would be a great cover,” Harry told him, liking that spur of the moment idea more as he thought about it. “And it would probably allow you into Hogwarts.” Brow creasing, he said, “Though that would be dangerous.”“It would be, I admit that, but it could end up being more helpful than we know,” Tom admitted, pondering it harder. “Let me look into some areas. Or get Lucius to do it for me. There are a couple others as well. We'll see.” Looking down at his lover, he grinned ferally then said, “That would mean no one could get you away from me.”“Like I would go,” Harry snorted. “There isn't anyone out there that could compete with you and you know it.”“There is that,” Tom told him, looking and sounding plenty smug.Grinning, Harry shook his head then leaned up and kissed Tom. Somehow the idea of getting married was something that pleased him more than he would admit. And he wanted it. More than he realized. It was even better that Tom seemed to like the idea as well. Good.Holding Harry close, Tom sighed contentedly. This was good. Shutting his eyes, he held Harry closer, head leaning against his lovers. At this juncture, he didn't think he could stand to be away from Harry the whole Yule hols. In fact, he was sure he would go slightly barmy if that happened. Which meant they had to come up with a way that didn't happen that would look good. More work for them, of course, but he would manage. No, Harry would stay right here and they would enjoy it together. That he promised himself. After all, it would be the first Yule they could spend completely together, so it had to be special. And he would find a way to make it just that.
