Golden Hearts: Chapter 6: Crime and Punishment
Arumus trotted toward the entrance, checking his watch. He realized that he would undoubtedly be late. Soon, he stood in the entrance, but he was surprised to discover the area deserted. Arumus leaned nonchalantly against a portion of the brick wall that he was sure would not suddenly turn into the archway, set down his heavy parcels, and waited. He took his wand out of his coat pocket, glancing around to spot any observers, but he was still alone. He flicked the polished rosewood in boredom, performing a nonverbal hover charm on a few surrounding pebbles.
The wand performed magnificently, and Arumus began levitating other things. Flick. A trash can lid rose unobtrusively a few inches and then settled down easily. Flick. One of his packages rose. Arumus glanced over his shoulder once more to spot Lucius, tailed by Draco, who was carrying packages of his own. Arumus hastily released the hover charm and stowed his wand away in one quick, dexterous motion.
"I see you arrived on time," Lucius commented.
Arumus did not answer the question, as he didn't approve of lies, and stood coolly returning his uncle's gaze. Instead, quietly he said, "And you, uncle, are late."
Lucius arched a brow, and stepping close to Arumus, spoke lowly, "Perhaps we will discuss my debt later..." Louder, he intoned, "Draco, place your packages next to Arumus' and stand away."
Draco deposited his parcels alongside Arumus' purchases and stood aside. Arumus moved a safe distance away as well and watched as his uncle sent them home with a quick vanishing spell.
"Now, let us return home." He held out his arms, and Draco gripped his right while Arumus took the left. Lucius turned into that crushing darkness, and they all vanished with a pop. They reappeared on the lawn before the Malfoy Manor. Uncle Lucius turned to Arumus. "I will review your purchases now, so you may follow me to my study, Arumus."
"Yes, sir."
Once in his study, Lucius took the multiple receipts from his nephew and began adding the total, and he paused when he came to the receipt from Ollivander's. "Why did you pay ten extra galleons for your wand?"
"The wand that chose me was particularly rare, sir, and Mr. Ollivander told me he must charge extra because acquiring the core was troublesome," Arumus replied.
Lucius located the box and flipped it open to find it empty. His eyes met Arumus' as he asked, "May I see it?"
"Yes, sir." Arumus withdrew his wand from his left coat pocket and handed it, somewhat reluctantly, to Uncle Lucius. Lucius examined the highly polished dark wood carefully.
"Ah... Rosewood. And what is the core?"
"The hair of a sphinx, sir."
Lucius' face took on a look of surprise. "Really? Fascinating." His uncle held the polished wand aloft, muttering an incantation. Nothing happened. He frowned. "It obeys you?"
"Yes, sir," Arumus said a trifle coolly.
Lucius handed Arumus his wand with a slight smile, and then returned to the receipts. After a few more moments, Lucius looked up from his tally. "You seem to be missing nine grots, Arumus."
Arumus looked slightly surprised, but then he dug into his pockets. The missing grots were at the bottom of his right trouser pocket. "Here, sir." He handed Lucius the coins.
Lucius shuffled them absently. "Tell me about your visit to Ollivander. I would know the story behind your wand, Arumus."
Arumus considered his answer thoughtfully. "Well, sir, he started by speaking of my parents and their wands. I he said that my mother uses a wand of walnut and dragon heartstrings, and my father has yew and phoenix tail feather. He--"
Lucius held up his hand, halting Arumus mid-sentence, a slightly frightened look on his face. "I know about your parents' wands. What did he say about you?"
Arumus shifted uneasily. "He said he thought that interesting things would 'follow in my wake.' Yes, those are the words he used..."
"Arumus, I must ask you to be honest with me. Why don't you want to discuss this matter?" Lucius eyed him shrewdly. "Ah. Perhaps you are worried that I will become angry with you for breaking my rules in the past?"
Arumus nodded.
"I'll tell you a secret, Arumus. If you break the rules correctly, no one ever finds out until it is too late. If you broke rules and I still know nothing about it, you have reason to celebrate a large success. Furthermore, I will not punish you for something you have already gotten away with..."
Arumus smiled his small, slight smile. "I see, sir." These words from Uncle Luius were the exact thing he had been hoping to hear. "Well, I have been stealing your wand at night to practice incantations for about five years now."
Instead of anger, Arumus was surprised to see a momentary flash of pride on his uncle's face. "Interesting. I wondered how you were able to master that hover charm so recently after purchasing your wand..."
Arumus smiled a bit wider. His practice sneaking about had certainly paid off, especially if he had successfully hoodwinked his uncle. "Ollivander somehow knew about my illegal magic use and told me that I had an affinity for persuasion. I had to use an actual spell to find my wand because Mr. Ollivander said I could probably use nearly any wand. Then he gave me a list of books about wandlore and said he would be happy to accept me as an apprentice after Hogwarts. That is, more or less, what happened." Arumus knew he had not retold the entire story, but he never really liked people to know more about him than was necessary, even Uncle Lucius.
"I see," Lucius said musingly. He seemed lost in thought for a moment, but then his eyes focused once more. "And now, Arumus, we need to discuss a payment of debt."
Arumus arched an eyebrow. "What debt?"
"The debt I owe you. I was, after all, late, and you were right to point out the unfair standard I hold you to when I cannot meet it myself." Lucius gave Arumus a small smile.
Arumus thought for a moment, coming to a decision. "Sir," He ventured, "Let's just say that you owe me." Arumus pressed his fingertips together, peering over them with eyes of blue. "I will, of course, collect when payment is due."
Lucius looked surprised, but he said, "Very well, Arumus. Though I am rarely the kind of man who accrues debt, in this case, I will make an exception. I owe you one circumstantially-based debt. You may claim it at any time."
"So be it," Arumus replied hiding the smile he felt. He thought that he might never ask for payment of the debt, but a person in debt to an individual was a useful individual. Arumus stood, thinking of someone who owed him debts that would prove much more difficult to pay. It was time that Draco learned proper respect.
"Thank you for your time, Lucius," Arumus said, nodding his head as if to an equal. Truly, Lucius was his equal, now. He moved to leave the study, not noticing how very thoughtful his uncle appeared.
Because of the idea of debt, Lucius would now always be obliged to listen to Arumus and take his opinion into account. Arumus had just won real estate with which he could effectively manipulate the fate of the Malfoy name, to a lesser extent. Arumus had waited quite a while for circumstances to be right for such a coupe.
Lucius spoke before Arumus had made it through the door. "At times, I think you have learned the lessons I have taught you far too well..."
