Chapter 62
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
With help from Lynn.
Minerva folded her hands on her desk and looked at those gathered in front of it, giving a pleased nod. All the Weasleys in the school and Hermione were there. She knew Miss Lovegood was a friend of Harry's, but she and Albus decided to confine the conversation to those in her house so there wasn't a chance of information spreading. It would come, of course, but for now this was the best way to handle the situation.
After they all settled, looking slightly tense, she launched in. “For now, we want this confined to those of us in this room. So, if you would, please be discreet about what I say. I imagine that most will know by tomorrow, since the Prophet will probably pick up the story.”From the expression on McGonagall's face, everyone sitting there was concerned. Hermione looked between the faces, seeing all of them shoot her confused, wary looks, before she finally faced their head of house and asked, “What happened Professor?” Her assumption was it had to do with Harry since he vanished for so long last night, but couldn't be certain. So far this morning, he'd been in class or off somewhere else, she wasn't sure where. The night before, he had come in after Prefect rounds and vanished to the dorm. So, no one had talked to him yet, even at breakfast. He had brushed off their questions, finishing quickly after getting a couple owls, then vanished again.“Something happened to Mr. Potter's family last night,” she sighed, giving a sad shake of her head. She then gave a quick rundown of the events they were aware of. It wasn't much, as Albus still didn't have details, but enough to give all of them an overview of what transpired. When she finished, she looked around at the pale faces of her students and told them, “Albus thinks, and I do concur, that during this trying time Mr. Potter needs a great deal of support. We all understand that he and his family didn't get along. Also, that there were issues. However, we're equally as sure he's having a rough time because of the event. What he needs now is the support of his friends, especially since everyone in our world is likely to find out via the Prophet tomorrow. So, if you would, quietly offer him your support or, if he's willing, let him talk about what happened. The latter may be something he needs at this time.”“We'll make sure, Professor,” a pale as a ghost Ginny told her before anyone else could say anything.“Oh yes,” Hermione nodded, wringing her hands. Then, quietly, she asked, “Was it real Death Eaters or just people dressed as them? Do you know?” While she was on the fence anymore when it came to plenty about Prof. Dumbledore, he did have contacts that could get the information on so much, ones that were usually right.“From what we know so far, it appears as though it was a real attack by Death Eaters. He still doesn't have all the information on it,” Minerva told them, looking between the pale faces.“Why would they attack Privet Drive?” Ron asked, completely bewildered. “Harry's not been there in over a year.”“We don't know,” Minerva admitted with a shake of her head. Not wanting to go into that end of the issue, as none of them had answers, she changed back to the original topic, “We just need all of you to be what you are for Harry; his friends. Nothing more. No need to go overboard or press for something he's not willing to talk about, but be there for him. It's all you have to do. Pressing him for details or what he knows is probably a bad idea at this time, so just let him discuss what he feels comfortable with.”After more agreements from all of those there, she dismissed them, hoping they didn't try to pressure Harry into areas he wasn't ready to talk about.
“Madam Bones gave me the injunction,” Harry told Sirius after taking a seat on his settee with a soft groan. “My Solicitor also managed to get the hearing bumped up to tomorrow and it'll be held in secret. Dumbledore won't know ahead of time its happening. In fact, he won't know anything until my Solicitor comes to get me out of the castle. With this mess, it could mean any number of bits I'm needed for, so it won't look odd.”
As he looked over the paper Harry handed him, Sirius nodded. “It's a good step, that's for damned sure. And it'll stop the most overt attempts. It's just not going to stop him completely, Harry. You know what he's like. All this means is he'll be sneakier and more underhanded about it, nothing more.” Sirius sighed then handed it back.“We know,” Harry agreed with a shake of his head, folding his arms over his chest. “I'm already planning on a bombardment at school as I'm damned sure the old goat is letting some know what happened, like my friends. Then I'll expect more tomorrow when it hits the papers. Nothing to worry about. I'll manage to handle whatever comes.”“He's going to drag everyone in he can to put pressure on you. It might not be overt and pushing, but he'll lay it out in such a way that they'll do his bidding without him having to suggest anything,” Sirius warned, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. He was feeling a tad better about the mess as that injunction could stop the absolute worst of what the old goat could pull out. And if Harry could get the hearing that fast, it would derail plenty. All it meant was Harry needed to stay alert to other manipulations and bits the barmy man would try with him.“Oh, well aware of this,” Harry snorted, shaking his head. “We're preparing and putting measures in place to head off the worst while I'm in the castle, don't worry. I can fend off most on my own. The rest? We're going to have a few watching my back for me.”“You need to,” Sirius told him. “It's not a joke, Harry. I trust him with you as far as I can throw that castle.”“We're implementing several things, don't worry. One is having a couple watch my back for me, people Albus wouldn't consider keeping an eye out for. Don't worry, I know what I'm doing.”“Snape and the other one can't watch you all the time,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “And you sure can't have those in your house do it. Dumbledore would think of them first and keep watch. Not to mention some might end up going to him and talking.”“Not them,” Harry grinned. “I'm getting with Draco tonight. He'll watch my back for me and make damned sure that it’s not looking like it's what he's doing. Tom's going to have a few others as well, though I doubt they'll be told why. Nothing to worry about. I'll be protected.”Then he sobered up and sighed, “I'm not the only one that needs to worry, Sirius. You probably do as well.” Pulling out the basic letter he and Tom composed, he handed it over. “We came up with this bit for you. It's the truth, completely, so you don't have to lie. Get it off, fast. I'm also going to say he'll end up going to work on you as well to get you back. I'm damned sure Mr. and Mrs. Weasley have already been brought into this mess and pushed in the direction he wants. So, you might want to make sure this is off today to start derailing anything he might try.”Sirius read through what was there quickly then nodded. “I'll get it written up then get it off to Remus. It's not going to stop him, though. He'll try something else. And we won't know what that is until he does it.”“True,” Harry groused, slouching slightly. “It's a start. I don't want you pulled into this, Sirius. Though I doubt I can stop it. All I'm going for is making it as hard on him as we can.”“I think I can spin him in circles enough to give you the time you need to get married. Once you do the deed, you can stop more,” Sirius told him, putting the letter aside, planning to work on it once Harry left. “And it might give us an idea of what the man is planning. Let's see what he does with it then go from there.”“With owl post, despite them being good, we can put plenty off because it takes time to route it the way they are. Until then—we're going to do all we can to throw spanners into his plans. We just need a heads up when it comes to what the hell he's trying, nothing more. It's something I think we can manage.” Harry told him. While he was tense about what this might bring, he was sure he could take it on. After all, he had more help than Dumbledore knew.“I'll stay alert for whatever he thinks to throw at us then we'll go from there. Let me worry about this bit, you worry about what else is coming,” Sirius told him pointedly. While Harry was damned good, something he now understood more than he ever had, Albus was trickier than anyone knew, the part that worried him more than anything else in this mess.“I'm good,” Harry assured him. “Nothing to stress over. We'll manage, trust me.”Though Sirius nodded, he couldn't help but worry. Protecting Harry was his job and he couldn't take it on all the time. So, when he couldn't, he worried. And he was more apprehensive as he knew one of the end games was on. Oh yes, that was a cause for worry.
Hand trembling slightly, Albus downed the stronger version of Pepper-Up Severus had provided him with. While it helped some, he was nowhere close to what he was before the curse. He could function, though, something he needed. With a sigh, he leaned back in his chair after passing the order Harry's Solicitor managed to obtain to the Potions Master then said, “We have issues, Severus.”A quick scan of what was passed over to him told Severus all he needed to know on the topic. Once he tossed it back on the desk, he asked, “Have you heard anything else that might be coming of this? Mr. Potter is under age, after all, so they won't just kick him loose to fend for himself.”“My sources have said he's applied for, and will probably get, full emancipation. The hearing for it is in a week, if what I heard is right,” Albus told him with a groan and sad shake of his head. “And I don't have any way to stop it. The best solution I've heard so far won't derail that step, but can help us. Molly and Arthur are going to offer him a place to live with them. If he accepts, we'll have to tend to the wards on the house.”“Those wards are a tricky venture,” Severus sighed, trying to keep up his normal act for the old goat. What he wanted to push for was any plans Albus had. So, he decided to poke slightly and see what he could manage. “I looked at the signup sheet earlier for the hols. Mr. Potter's name isn't on it, Albus. Someone might want to talk to him to see what his plans are. The gossip around the castle is he's planning to stay with this Nick character for the break. Is he still or will he change his mind, do you know?”“That I don't and we need to find out,” Albus told him, making a note on a piece of parchment. Once more leaning back, groaning softly as he did, he told Severus, “We need to find a way to get Harry away from this Nick. I do understand he's attached, but I don't like not knowing his history. For all we know, he could be aiding Tom. I just feel that Harry would be better off staying with someone from the Order. Arthur and Molly come to mind there. With all that's coming, I don't think Nick can protect Harry the way we'll need.”“And if Mr. Potter is granted emancipation, there's nothing any of us can do to put a stop to it, Albus,” Severus snorted. This was one of those areas he was going to use his initiative with. Once he put it out there, he would relay what he had done to Potter so they could prepare. After pretending to think it over, he said, “Perhaps see about persuading Black to return. He's the only person I can think of that might be able to reason with Potter. While the two of them together are bad news, at least we can keep track of the boy.”The plan about Grimmauld Place coming to mind, Albus nodded. He pondered the Sirius factor for a few moments then said, “Yes, I think we need Sirius involved. Let me send something off to Remus explaining the gravity of the situation. It's my hope that I can persuade him to return for poor Harry's sake. If he's there, I'm sure we can nudge Harry in the direction of staying with Sirius instead of Nick. After all, they haven't had much time together over the years. Well, if Molly and Arthur can't talk him into staying with them.” He had to tread carefully here as that order would magically stop him coming out and saying some of what he wanted to. So, he was just going to keep nudging. Though Severus had a point about Sirius.Sirius was tricky to work with when it came to so much as he didn't always tend to fall in line with what he wanted. He had been that way in the last war when it came to parts and was in this one. While he was perfect to help with Harry, he was also an influence in Harry's life he didn't want there much. The Weasley's were far better for such ventures. It was just getting Harry moving and trusting him once more that was the issue. If he couldn't manage, some plans were moot and he didn't have the time left to come up with an alternative. So, it was time to pull out the big wands to nudge this how he needed. It would take a lot of magic, something he didn't have much of to spare anyway, but he would. If he could get Harry nudged that way, he could manage with the other areas. It would just take work.
Head resting on Tom's shoulder, Harry gave a contented sigh. It had been a busy couple of days and looked like it would continue to be so for the next few. As this was beyond their normal busy, he was tired and stretched a tad thin. Eyes drifting shut, he said, softly, as Tom went through the papers his Solicitor had given him for the following day, “I wish you could come with me tomorrow.”
“As do I,” Tom told him, putting the papers on the bedside table and leaning back. After giving Harry's hair a soft tug, he added, “It's not possible. Going into the Ministry is too great a risk as I can't hide who I really am from some of the spells they use for various bits. Just trust in your Solicitor and other areas. Lucius will get with Fudge tomorrow to ensure it doesn't slip out and the hearing is closed to everyone. From what I know already, your Solicitor is pressing for it to stay sealed for the foreseeable future. We need him to manage that. Lucius will help. Trust in that. As we discussed, I’ll be waiting for you at the restaurant nearby when you’re done. It's the best I can manage, Harry.”“I know,” Harry sighed. “It's just—while I want this, more than anything because of so much, it's just the idea of facing it alone. There's no one close to me I can take with me because of various—whatever. Mostly because you're all wanted.”“That is true,” Tom chuckled, realizing he was right.“And I don't want anyone else with me because of what Dumbledore probably has already managed to push them towards.” He added with a groan. Then he turned on his side and draped an arm over Tom. “We have more to prepare for, all of us. Especially me, though. There was nothing in the paper today, probably due to the DMLE investigating and the whole not wanting to admit anything when it comes to the Death Eater part, but it'll hit tomorrow. We both know it. Then I'll have more issues in school. I'm sure that he's going to draw plenty in as well, if he hasn't already. With him, I'm sure it's the latter. Which puts on more pressure.”“Very true,” Tom conceded with a nod. “Don't let it overly stress you. I think all you truly need to worry about is your house. With what else we're putting in place, we will have others watching out for you during class or other areas. You worry about the ones that Albus probably enlisted to get you moving how he wants.”“I can do this,” Harry told him, focusing on what Tom said.“You can,” Tom nodded. “If you couldn’t, I wouldn't have pushed it in this direction. Just do what you always have and press on. Keep in mind that you get breaks and don't have to deal with it for more than 24 hours at a time. So, you can regroup between then.”“There is that,” Harry said with a grin, looking up at him.Once more giving Harry's hair a tug after running his fingers through it, Tom turned on his side with a groan then held him close. “Tomorrow will probably be the worst. Not only do you have the hearing, but will start to deal with the fallout of what we did. Just get through the day then you can gauge just what you have to do and are working with. Plans will start to show. Once you get a feel for what's going on, you'll be better able to cope and know what to do.”“And I'll have some help watching out for problems from others.” Harry admitted. “Draco is someone that can pick up on plenty and no one will know he did. I need someone who can manage to tend to that chore.”“Which is why I want him tending to the task,” Tom confirmed with a nodAs he held Harry close, he realized for the first time since the year before that the teenager was still in Harry. He hid it well, of course, and was more mature than anyone his age he had ever met, besides himself when he was the same age, but there were still shades there. And there were some insecurities. He figured it was probably something Harry would get over once they were through the worst of what they were doing. The following day would be a big step towards it. Harry would be a legal adult when they finished the hearing the following day. And Albus couldn't do a damned thing to manipulate him into what he wanted, at least legally. It was other ways they were worried about. He was sure that those other ways factored into part of Harry's insecurities. Come the break, he planned to help with the rest. From experience, he knew it would just take time, nothing more. His partner had been just a mere teenager, one that was manipulated, used and abused just a couple of years ago. There was tremendous growth in him since then. All it meant was Harry needed time to grow out of the rest. He doubted it would take much longer either.“Don't let it worry you,” Tom told him, giving Harry a squeeze then leaning down to kiss him tenderly. “I'll make sure that plenty are keeping watch on you so no one tries anything foolish. And I'll ensure Severus keeps up on what that old man is doing. In a week or so, most of it will die down. Nothing to worry about.”“I know,” Harry smiled after Tom broke off the kiss. Then he snuggled up closer to his future husband. With a sigh, he said, “And once we take so much out of that old man's hands, we then have to worry about what he is cooking up. He's going to catch on real fast when it comes to me not playing and that I won't fall in step with what he wants. Once he gets that slap, he's going to change tracks. What that will be I don't know either.”“Which honestly concerns me more,” Tom admitted, brow furrowed. “I'm sure it has something to do with that fake prophecy and the Department of Mysteries. Let me see what Severus can get out of him. Well, and how much time he has left. I'd rather not confront until we're sure he's at the end. He'll be desperate by then and much will come out. We just need to bide our time.”“If I didn't want revenge so much, I'd say we just run him in circles until he drops,” Harry snorted, rolling his eyes.“We both want revenge on him, for plenty,” Tom told him. “Though losing his magic slowly and becoming what is basically a squib is wonderful revenge,” he added, an evil grin on his handsome face. “Killing someone defenseless like that isn't satisfying, though. No, he will come to his end by our hands. We just have to figure out how.”“Maybe we should let him 'draw you out',” Harry told him in a distracted tone. “He's damned close, Tom. The faster we end him, the better shape we're going to be in. As far as we know, there is no Light Lord waiting to step in and take his place. No one has heard if he found anyone. A gap can only help your mission and us to set everything right once more.”Seriously pondering that, Tom gave a distracted nod. “Yes, maybe this is something we need to consider. I'm not sure if he has the magic left to pull off another of those fake visions, but I bet he's going to try. He wouldn't do something once when it comes to an area such as this.” Though he made a mental note to get back to the topic tomorrow, he wasn't going to delve too deeply into it tonight.“Enough of that,” he then said, looking down at Harry. “We'll delve more into plans tomorrow. I'd rather clear our minds before sleep. No sense in falling asleep stressed.” With that, he grabbed a handful of Harry's hair and pulled him into another kiss, holding him there. Oh yes, this was the way to lessen stress before bed and clear your mind. For him, and Harry, from what he knew, it worked better at stress relief than meditation. As they had so much to do the following day, he was going for as relaxed as he could get them both.
