Chapter 64
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
With help from Lynn.
After handing over what he had picked up from Sirius, Harry sat down by Tom with a tired groan. It wasn't even noon yet and he already had to deal with plenty. As expected, Dumbledore was trying to get everyone moving the way he wanted them to without violating the order put in place. It was just suggestions and worded like it was someone else's idea, but you knew he was behind it.
When Tom picked up what was there, he said, running his fingers through his hair and tugging on it, “Sirius is turning him down flat. He doubts the other owl has reached him yet, the one where he said no, but will write him another making it clear he's turning him down again. From what he told me, he's writing one to Remus as well making it clear not to agree as the old man is trying for something.”“Good,” Tom told him with a distracted nod as he read through what was there. However, as he reached the part about Grimmauld Place, he grinned slightly then told his lover, “If he doesn't want Grimmauld Place, tell him you'll take it. As it's Order headquarters, you never know if you owning it can help us.”“Already told him,” Harry grinned himself. “He said if I want it, he'll sign it over without a problem. I said I wanted it, so he'll make arrangements to shift the title to me. We just need to send off for the proper paperwork, nothing more. And pay whatever fees there are for the title shift.”“Send something off to your Solicitor today,” Tom told him, flipping through all the papers there. “He can come up with whatever you need. And it can be tended to fast as it's not a sale.”“Will do,” Harry nodded, making a note of it on his ever present clipboard. After finishing reading through what was there, Tom leaned back with a groan. “None of this is unexpected. We both knew he would try something to get this moving how he wants. This is the result. You and I will come up with something he can send, though rewrite it in his own words again. If he's making it clear to Lupin not to bite, it just leaves the ones you normally have to deal with. Those you can take on.”“I can,” Harry agreed with a nod. “Turning them all down. Just going with the line I've made arrangements to stay with you for the hols and go from there. Let's see what presents itself.”“My bet is they're going to try to talk you into bringing Nick along for the hols. Don't bite. While it might be good to get into the house and be able to come through the Fidelius, we can't be gone that long. There is too much here to tend to.” Tom told him with a sigh, knowing there was plenty to push for over the hols and having Harry around would help a lot as he wouldn't be distracted with schoolwork.“Let's see what they say,” Harry said, picking up the letters to himself again. After thinking it over, he suggested, tone distracted, “If they push too hard, I can suggest Christmas day to come over and meet up. It will allow you access to the house and you can get back in if you need to. Going about it that way might pacify the masses slightly.”Tom thought over the suggestion then gave a slow nod. “Yes, we can do it that way. One day only, though. It should put some of their minds at ease as I doubt the old goat will be there. Good suggestion.” However, he then grinned slightly and added, “We'll be married by them, a nice bomb to drop on them.”“Oh yes,” Harry laughed, grinning himself. “If it comes down to it, we can get Sirius to come along for that short of a time. He can make plenty clear if we need him to, such as the marriage, nothing wonky, whatever. And it'll give you access to the house again if you need it while I'm at school.”“We'll plan for this as I'm sure plenty will push you hard to do something with them,” Tom told him as he made a note on his calendar himself to plan for it. “If we do the deed on Christmas eve, we can just make it clear it's our honeymoon and that should get you left alone.”“True,” Harry told him, still grinning. He was looking forward to getting married more than almost anything right now. They had the worst of what Dumbledore could do stopped in its tracks, but this would help even more. Well, and he wanted the commitment that came with the license. He didn't have doubts about Tom and what he felt for him, but it would cement it in his mind. And, honestly, it was protection for both of them, in many ways. One never knew when they might need it.“When you get the letter off to your Solicitor, tell him he needs to set up your test for the Apparation license. Since you're emancipated, you can get it rather than wait. It's something you'll probably need.”“Will do,” Harry nodded, jotting a note down about that as well. After he finished, he asked, “How do they work doing it? Do you know? Is it something you have to go to the Ministry for?”“Because you're in school, they'll just have you meet at Hogsmeade,” Tom told him. “Since it's an odd situation, you can get out of the school for it. If you send it off today and he sets it up, you can probably do it this weekend.” Then he chuckled and added, “I can meet you there. If I remember right, one of the teachers will have to accompany you, but it's not a hardship. The more who see us together, the better we'll be.”“Will have him set it up,” Harry told him with a nod.“We need to stay alert for anything Dumbledore is going to try beyond this bit,” Harry then groaned and leaned back in his chair. “We've taken plenty out of his hands. That fake vision I had—I don't see it as a onetime occurrence, Tom. It'll factor in again.”“It will,” Tom agreed with a sigh. “I'm sure he's planning some bit to force the two of us together. As short as his time is now and how you've thrown him so far off will factor in as well. My guess is he's about to pull something huge to try. And I don't see us getting a heads up from anyone what it might be. The only hint I have is the Hall of Prophecy bit. Even Snape says the old goat is asking him to take a turn at guard duty there.”“And if I'm making it clear I won't stay with anyone, want to bet it happens either just before school lets out for the break or the day he knows I'm at Grimmauld Place?”“Oh yes, we need to watch for both,” Tom nodded. “As limited as his magic is now, from what I know, I'm sure he's planning what's coming very carefully as he might not have the reserves to do it more than once. Which means you need to stay alert. If he tries anything, you get in contact with me so I know what it is. We aren't going to let him draw us in.”“Drawing us in might be good, Tom,” Harry told him, tone distracted as he thought it over. “He might think it's for the confrontation between the two of us, but we can then do something about him.”“There is that, yes,” Tom admitted, pondering it. “We'll see what we can concoct if we get any kind of foreshadowing about what he's up to. I don't want to drop either of us in the middle of something where we have no plan to deal with whatever he's concocted.”“True,” Harry agreed. “Let's see what I can figure out. I'm sure he'll give some hints, somewhere, when he realizes I'm not playing his game anymore. Up until now, I've made it look like I am, at least a little with some parts, though I've backed away from him. He'll give up something we can use to sort it out.”“Pay close attention to everything,” Tom schooled, reaching and tugging Harry's hair. “Between the two of us, we can probably figure some of it out.”Harry grinned at the pulling of his hair then nodded. Straightening up, he asked, “What all do we have to do today besides this mess?”“Legislation,” Tom told him, focusing once more. “We’ll knock out what you just brought first, then tackle the rest. I want as much in place as I can get before the break.”Harry focused then nodded. Legislation was always the tricky part, so he would make sure to pay close attention.
When the post was delivered at brekky, Harry was fuming. Unlike normal, he had several owls who delivered. The one from the Weasleys he expected. A quick read through of what they said wasn't anything unexpected either. There were also letters from other Order members offering plenty. Those were bad enough as it was apparent plenty was spread and told. Then there was how everyone was treating and talking to him. He expected some, of course, and questions, but this was almost over the top and had him fuming. It was readily apparent Dumbledore and, probably, McGonagall had told almost everyone plenty. While he expected some of it, he wasn't prepared for anything like this. Though he didn't mind the kid glove treatment as it would get him left alone, there were also questions he didn't want to answer yet. It was already on his nerves and he was sure it would grow worse as the day went on as it wouldn't just stay in Gryffindor. Yeah, this was enough to make him mental, that's for damned sure.
After Ron and Hermione asked some very pointed, and not real subtle, questions about bits he knew had to have come from someone who heard what went on in Dumbledore's office the night he 'found out' what happened to the Dursleys, he was done. He just needed a break for a while to sort through plenty. The letters from everyone and their bleeding uncle could wait, but there was one from his Solicitor he had to tend to right off. He would, of course, and get it off fast, but he was going to find the Astronomy tower and have a fag to get himself under control. As he had no class right after brekky, he could manage. By the time he was done, he would be in a better frame of mind.He quickly downed the last of his coffee then stood, gathering up the mass of letters he received. Though there were questions from plenty, he just mumbled something about having to take care of an important bit then left, still fuming. This didn't herald anything good for the rest of the day, that's for damned sure! He just hoped to get his temper under control enough so he didn't hex someone if they said the wrong thing. As he stalked his way to the tower, making sure to have what he needed with him, he gave a mental sigh. He wished Malfoy could join him. Talking to Draco seemed to help cool his temper a bit anymore, for some reason. He supposed it was he didn't have to hide so much from him like he did almost everyone else. It wasn't viable, though. Malfoy had a class first thing this morning, so he would just go it alone and deal from there. Some time alone would do him good. Besides, this wouldn't look off to anyone what with all that had gone on. It would just look like what it really was; he needed time to think. As long as he made it to his next class on time, he was fine.
As Harry came down from the Astronomy tower after spending time alone, he was feeling more in control and thought he could deal with whatever. He supposed it was just getting it all tossed at him at once, nothing more, coupled with the delicate dance he had to do anyway. Temper was warranted sometimes, the same with feeling overwhelmed. It happened. You just didn't let it get the better of you. He took a break, had a couple fags, dealt with the worst of the mess and was now back in control, probably able to handle most anything tossed back at him.
He was meandering towards Gryffindor, looking at a list of what he had to take care of still while he did, when he heard a familiar voice say his name. With an internal sigh, he mentally groused he didn't need to deal with the old man yet, but steeled himself to do so. “Yes, Professor?” he asked after stopping and looking at the old man. Though less than thrilled to deal with him, he was pleased to see he looked plenty frail and shuffled along like an old man rather than how he used to. Good. While he was sure there were issues with cognitive function, he still needed to stay alert to whatever he might think to pull out. After all, he was the tricky sort to work with.Albus tried not to let on how winded he was by the walk to his office from the Great Hall. It took plenty of time now, more than it ever did. He had planned to rest a bit once he reached his office before delving into what he needed to take care of, but was pleased to see Harry, who was probably headed towards the dorm. Of course, he had seen him leave the Great Hall earlier, looking a tad upset. With all that happened, he didn't take it as meaning anything off.“I was wondering, since you still have over an hour before your next class, if we could have a little talk,” he said, putting on his best grandfatherly smile.“What about?” Harry asked. As he no longer had the best relationship with Dumbledore, this would be in character.“You're plans for Yule break,” Albus told him, stepping closer then putting a hand on Harry's shoulder and guiding him towards his office. He was thankful it wasn't far off and he wouldn't have to walk much more. “I noticed your name isn't on the list of those who are staying this year.”This was a topic Harry thought he could handle. It was also a bit which could get the whole mess moving the way they needed and maybe get some information. “No,” Harry told him with a shake of his head, “I've already made plans.”Albus didn't like he had, but assumed it was the case. Waiting until they rode the staircase up to his office and he was able to sit down, putting his wand on the desk he then inquired, after Harry settled in, “What are those, if you don't mind me asking?”Though Harry did mind him asking, he said, making sure not to lock eyes with the man, “I'm staying with Nick. It was planned before the whole mess came about.” Harry told him, relaxing the best he could, or trying to show he was anyway. As he did, he took in everything he could of the man and desk, pleased he looked plenty tired, old and worn out.Though he didn't like what was said, Albus gave a slow nod. “I understand. Arthur and Molly told me they thought it best to have you stay with them this year. You're always welcome, you know this. They also said they were going to put out feelers to have Sirius return. While Grimmauld Place isn't the cheeriest of abodes, I'm sure you'd enjoy staying with those who care about you.”“Has Sirius said he's returning?” Harry asked, curious if the old goat would lie and it was a question which would be expected of him.“No, not as of yet,” Albus admitted, leaning back with a soft groan. “I'm sure he will, though, especially after he's heard what happened. There is a letter off to Remus as well.” While Harry was now far harder to work with than he had been, he was certain this would get him motivated in the direction he needed. As his time was now so limited with so much not in place, he needed something going his direction so he could end this mess before his time was up.Well, at least the old man didn't lie to him. After pondering what to do, Harry then asked, more to just see what the old man said than anything, “Can Nick come along? We made plans already and he's counting on them.”While Albus didn't have a bad impression of the man when he met him, Nick wasn't someone he liked either. It was more to do with the fact he was a spanner in the works and seemed to have a great pull with Harry anymore, something which would complicate matters plenty if it continued on. Face hardening, though he didn't intend it to, Albus quickly smoothed out his expression then said, tone light, “Of course. You need to realize this is a touchy bit, Harry, what with the Order and so much else. I'm not sure having Nick around would be wise.”“I trust Nick,” Harry told him bluntly, tone firm. “With every secret I have.” Once that was out there, he shook his head and said, “Let me see what he says. Not sure what all plans he made, but I don't want to agree for him. Well, and if Sirius and Remus are going to show up. I'll decide from there.”“I'm sure we'll hear something from those two in a couple of days,” Albus told him with a smile. He also made a mental note to get a letter off to both of them again today to see if he could push them to join. As he used the fastest owl he could for the last one, he was certain they received it, but he would send another and see what he could manage. Maybe making it sound worse than what it was with Harry. He didn't know. Either way, he needed Harry back on track.“After break is over, I want to once more resume the special lessons we were having. They've been rather side-tracked by so much. We do need to pick them up again, Harry,” he told him. Yes, he did. He knew he didn't have much time left and needed Harry to learn what he could pass on.“That's fine,” Harry agreed with a nod, curious again what the old man wanted to show him. He was sure it was about Tom, of course, but wondering what more it could involve.“Right, we'll set it up when school resumes. I'll let you get back to what you were doing then,” Albus told him, feeling the now familiar weariness wash over him. He needed a nap to tackle what else he had to do and press on.With a nod, Harry stood and said goodbye then headed to the stairs. As he rode down them then headed to the dorms, he tried sorted through what was said. While it wasn't an overt manipulation and the hard push on so much, the agenda was there. Since he had put him off, he was certain worse was coming when he turned it down.As he walked along, he sighed, thinking of all he had to do today. Schoolwork was just the start of it. There were plenty of other bits he had to worry about. He also fully planned to avoid his 'friends' if he could at all manage to do so.
After his next class, Harry was up in the common room working on various bits he had to take care of. Though plenty were trying to talk to him, from his friends to those curious about what was in the paper, he was brushing them off in an attempt to finish what he needed to get done. Homework was always piling up and he liked to stay ahead. As he worked, though, his mind wasn't on what he was doing fully. Oh, he could concentrate and finish it, but he was distracted, and didn't know why.
As he slogged through everything, his mind kept circling back to the meeting with Dumbledore. It wasn’t so much what was said where he was focused, but the man and his desk he kept envisioning. And he didn't know why. It was just the visuals there and it was niggling him, hard.As he finished the one assignment, setting it aside, he leaned back with a sigh and shut his eyes. He figured everyone would take it as he was resting for a minute when what he was doing was trying to focus on the visuals to try to sort through the mess and pinpoint what was drawing him. Slowly, he walked himself through everything from the moment he walked into the office until he fully focused on what the old goat had to say. As he did, his mind kept shifting back to the desk. It wasn't the desk itself, but something on it, from the feeling he had. Trying to slow down the visuals so he could take in everything he saw, ignoring anything about Dumbledore, it wasn't coming to him. After several minutes, he gave a mental shake of his head. While the niggling was still there, he didn't have a clue what it could relate to by now. He had seen everything on that desk many times by now and didn't know what was off. Rather than make himself barmy trying to pinpoint what it was, he decided to go back to work on everything he had to do. It was his hope whatever it was would jog loose while he focused elsewhere. With a sigh, he snagged his Arithmancy text and opened it to the chapter they were working on. While this homework wasn't bad, he had to pay attention while he worked as it was tricky. After snatching up his parchment and quill, he dove in, hoping to knock it off quickly. It was the worst he had to tackle today, thankfully, as he had the massive essay for Potions done. As he plowed on, his mind drifted to the desk again. Though he could focus on the equations, he kept seeing the desk.Just as he finished the last of the page, planning to go back and double check to make sure he had them all right, his head came up. Fighting off a huge evil grin, he now understood what his mind was trying to tell him. The Elder Wand! He knew where it was and where he had seen it before. Oh yes, he could get his hands on it. It would just be tricky as hell to get it away from Dumbledore!A mental note to get with Tom and Sirius about how the Elder Wand passed from one person to another, as he doubted it would end up a simple task, he was fighting off an evil grin as he picked up the next textbook in the stack and went to work. This was good, that's for damned sure!
