Hermione had returned back to Hogwarts alone, and had hidden herself away in the library. Hiding in the library was a pretty common thing that Hermione chose to do when she was upset. She knew that she should probably have found a better hiding place by now, as literally everyone knew where to find her if she wasn't in her room, but she didn't care. The particular place that she was currently in, was not one that was well known to students. Hermione had happened upon it during first year after coming to the library to hide from Draco when he had made fun of her for one of the first times. She had been wandering around looking for a good place to sit when a dark corner had caught her eye. She had headed towards it, and around the corner was a single table, which was hidden from view. Hermione had fell in love with the spot immediately, knowing that nobody would find her. Students didn't really come around the area, as it was away from the round tables that the student's studied at together. Whenever Hermione wanted to go to her hiding place, she would look around to make sure that no one was looking, and would sneak around the bookshelves, hiding her from view.
There were only two other students that Hermione knew of that knew about her hiding place; Ron and Harry. Whom she had had to tell as they had freaked out one day when they had searched both the common room and the library and hadn't found her. They had almost went to Dumbledore and told them that she was missing until she had randomly appeared in one of the aisles of the bookshelves and the two boys had demanded to know where she had been hiding.
And this was how Ron had been able to track her down and find her. Hermione now silently scolded herself for giving her spot away.
Ron stood a few feet in front of her, toying with his hands nervously.
Hermione looked up from the novel that she was reading and said "What do you want Ron?"
"We need to talk" Ron stated.
Hermione closed her book and clasped her hands together on the table. "Yes, we do. It has become evident to me that you still harbor feelings for Lavender, regardless of everything that you told me before"
"I don't have feelings for Lavender" Ron said quickly.
"Ron, I saw the way you looked at her in the Three Broomsticks. And you wouldn't kiss me while she was there, do you understand how bad that looks?" Hermione asked, her eyes filling with tears.
"Hermione, I'm sorry."
"No Ron, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I believed you were someone that you weren't." Hermione said as tears leaked down her face. She grabbed her book and stood up from the table and started walking away until…
"I slept with her."
Hermione froze.
She slowly turned around, looking directly at Ron.
"What?"
"I slept with Lavender" Ron said slowly.
"When?" Hermione asked sharply, her heart beating wildly in her chest.
Ron looked down at the floor, unable to look at her.
Hermione took a few steps towards him.
"When did you sleep with her?" Hermione asked slowly, trying to keep her voice even.
Ron looked up at her, and she read the answer on his face.
"You slept with her while we were together" Hermione stated bluntly, answering her own question.
"Hermione I never meant to hurt you.." Ron started.
"Never meant to hurt me?" Hermione exploded. "If you never meant to hurt me then you wouldn't have slept with Lavender in the first place now would you? I can't believe you would sleep with her while we were together!"
"You never made me feel wanted Hermione! How many times did I ask you to sleep with me and you wouldn't? You always had some bloody excuse and would try and make me feel bad for being a guy and wanting you physically. Lavender pursued me, she made me feel wanted all the time, and I couldn't say no. She was giving me things that you wouldn't, making me feel like I was actually wanted in a physical manner, so yes, I slept with her" Ron yelled back.
Hermione slapped Ron right across the face, a loud slap resounding throughout the library.
"Well you could have let me know that you were sleeping with someone else before you took my virginity" Hermione hissed venomously.
"I stopped sleeping with her the minute me and you slept together.." Ron said quietly.
"Oh like that makes it any better" Hermione snapped sarcastically.
"Hermione I swear.."
"Save your apologies Ronald, I don't want to hear it. Regardless of what you say, your apology has no relevance whatsoever. You're not sorry that you slept with her, if you were you would have told me right away, not continued to have an affair with her behind my back. Why are you telling me this now anyways?"
"Because Ginny threatened to tell you if I didn't."
"Ginny knew all along?" Hermione asked, feeling as though she had been slapped.
"No, she just found out in the Three Broomsticks, she didn't know. But she told me I had to tell you or she would, and I thought you would have preferred hearing it from me compared to somebody else."
Hermione felt a bit better, knowing that Ginny had also not known about the affair, nor that she had been hiding it from Hermione.
"Hearing that your boyfriend has been cheating on you is not something that is good to hear from anyone" Hermione said quietly.
"Hermione.."
"Seriously Ron, stop talking. I've heard more than enough from you to last me a lifetime. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving. And don't you even think about coming after me. In fact, I want you to leave me alone for good." Hermione said as she turned around and walked away.
Just as she rounded a bookshelf, she ran directly into Draco, who she had not seen standing there.
Draco steadied her as she went to fall backwards. Hermione looked up at him, tears running down her face, and could tell from the look on his face that he had heard hers and Ron's conversation.
"Well isn't this perfect" Hermione snapped hysterically. "Of course you overheard everything that just happened. Go on, go and tell the entire school what you just witnessed Malfoy, I know you're dying to."
"Granger.."
"Buzz off Malfoy, I don't have time for you, as you can see, I'm having the best week of my life." Hermione said sarcastically, tears still spilling down her face.
Hermione hiccupped, and Draco stood there looking at this girl who was broken in front of him. She had gone through so much in the past two days; he was surprised to see that she still had any willpower left in that tiny body of hers.
"Get out of my way Malfoy" Hermione said as forcefully as she could.
"First things first Granger, you might want to use a spell to conceal the blotchiness of your face and the red of your eyes, otherwise people are going to start asking questions. Second, you're going to want to stop crying. You and that idiot back there were pretty loud, so I'm assuming that some student's overhead your argument, so obviously the word is going to get around quickly and everyone is going to stare at you. If you want to try and avoid people, I can show you a way back to the dorm that will provide minimal to no human contact."
Hermione looked up at him, confusion in her teary eyes. "Why are you helping me?"
"Honestly? I don't know. But like you said, you have had a horrible past couple of days, and even the strongest of us can only stand so much before we snap, or in your case go into shock or go crazy. As much as we despise one another, even I have to admit that what Weasley did to you was undeserving. Now, are you going to accept my offer? Because I don't need people seeing me conversing with a Mudblood in public without some form of argument."
Hermione shook her head "You're a very confusing guy Malfoy. But yes, I would like if you could keep me away from as many people as possible right now."
"Follow me then" Draco said taking off down the aisle.
Hermione followed silently, feeling the weight of everything that was happening slowly crashing down on her. She had acted strong in front of Ron, as she didn't want to be one of those girls who just cried uncontrollably in front of their ex. She was stubborn, and she was too pissed off to even allow herself to cry in front of him. The minute she had turned away from him, that's when the waterworks had started, and of course who would she run right into? Draco bloody Malfoy. Who, surprisingly so, was actually helping her get back to the dorm that they shared.
Before Hermione knew it, they were standing outside their dorm. Draco said the password, and the door opened. Hermione felt like a zombie, she was emotionally and physically exhausted, and was walking around in a daze. She heard Draco saying something to her, but she was unable to register what it was he was saying.
"I hope you know Granger, that this doesn't change anything between us. I still hate you, and you still hate me, I just decided it was best not to pick on you at a moment of such weakness, even I am not that cruel. Just kidding, we both know that I am" Draco started drawling, making sure Hermione didn't think that they were on a friendship level or something just because he had assisted her.
When Hermione didn't answer, Draco turned and looked at her. She looked lost, and Draco realized that she wasn't listening to a word that he was saying. In fact, she didn't really seem to be paying attention to anything in particular.
Hermione had a million things running through her mind, her attack, her attacker, Ron cheating on her with Lavender, Ginny and Harry; what was going to happen with all of them now? Malfoy, and why he decided to help her. She could feel her mind working a mile a minute, and she couldn't turn it off.
Draco saw as Hermione started to sway, and he caught her in his arms before she hit the floor.
She started shaking in his arms, and Draco realized that she was going into shock. He carried her over to the couch, and laid her down. Hermione had her eyes squeezed shut, and her lips were tightly closed. Her body was shaking in shivers, and she was breathing heavily.
He tried getting her attention, but to no avail. She was unresponsive. Draco knew that she wasn't dying, it was her body's way of dealing with everything that had happened to her, but still he found himself lifting his palm towards her forehead. He closed his eyes, and felt as power seeped out from his palm, towards Hermione. When he felt it stop, he opened his eyes, and saw chocolate brown.
"How did you do that?" Hermione asked, wonder evident in her voice.
"Do what?" Draco asked nonchalantly.
"Don't play stupid with me Malfoy." Hermione said, her attitude back.
Draco smirked and stepped back from her, seeing that she was herself. "I don't know what you're talking about Granger. You should focus on yourself and your problems and not worry about me."
Hermione narrowed her eyes at him. "Nice trying to change the subject Malfoy, but that is the second time that I've seen you use wandless magic. I want to know how you do it."
"That is none of your concern. You're welcome for getting you here without anyone seeing you by the way."
"Yes, thank you for being my savior Malfoy" Hermione said sweetly.
"Ugh, do not use that tone of voice with me again Mudblood, or I may be sick."
Hermione stuck her tongue out at him.
Draco raised his eyebrow at her "Very mature."
"I am very mature thank you very much" Hermione said standing up. She stood up too fast, and swayed, and Draco automatically reached out to steady her.
"You should go to bed Granger" Draco stated.
"Don't tell me what to do Malfoy. And why do you even care?" Hermione asked.
"I don't care so don't get your knickers in a twist. I was merely making a suggestion. But whatever, I'm done babysitting you. Try to make it to your room without falling over" Draco said walking away.
Hermione watched his retreating figure until he had disappeared behind his bedroom door.
She shook her head, and made her way to her bedroom, without stumbling once. She wished Draco had been there so she could have sneered at him. She got changed and crawled into bed, and the weight of what happened between her and Ron hit her, and she felt tears run down her cheeks. She let out a sob, and covered her mouth, not wanting Draco to hear her. She stuffed her face in her pillow and let herself bawl. She couldn't believe that Ron of all people, the man that she loved, and the man she had thought was her best friend, would do something like that to her. What bothered her the most is that she had given herself to him completely, thinking that he had done the same with her, that it had actually meant something to him like it did to her. Clearly she had been wrong, and that hurt more than anything.
Hermione cried herself to sleep that night.
Draco woke up the next morning mentally hating himself for how nice he had been to Hermione the previous night. He had a weakness for helpless girls, something he would never admit to anyone.
After showering and getting dressed, Draco headed down the Great Hall for breakfast. He spotted Blaise and sat down next to him.
"Morning" Blaise said sleepily, rubbing his eyes.
"Zabini" Draco said in greeting.
"So what did you end up doing yesterday?"
"Nothing too interesting." Draco said.
"You are not one to give away much information" Blaise stated.
"Because there isn't much information to give."
"Did you guys hear?" Pansy asked sitting across from them, a smug look on her face.
"Hear what?" Blaise asked.
"That Weasley cheated on Granger with that Lavender Brown bimbo" Pansy stated.
"What? When?" Blaise asked jumping in immediately.
"Not sure, but people overheard their argument in the library. Supposedly Weasley had been sleeping with Brown for a while, because Little Miss Prissy Pants wouldn't sleep with him, so he went and got action from someone who would give it to him until Granger finally gave up her V card" Pansy said laughing.
"I don't know who would want to sleep with that disgusting disgrace of a wizard" Draco said disgustedly.
Blaise looked over at the Gryffindor table, spotted who he was looking for, and stood up. Before Draco realized what was happening, Blaise was already halfway across the Great Hall. The heads of students turned and watched Blaise as he made his way to the Gryffindor table.
Ginny had spotted Blaise immediately, and she had a feeling as to why Blaise was making his way over to their table, especially by reading the expression on his face. She knew that a normal sister would warn her brother about someone coming up behind him with a look that could kill, but Ginny was currently pissed at her brother, and she wanted to see what was going to happen. Ginny knew that her brother had told Hermione, the entire school was talking about it. Which is how she knew exactly why Blaise was walking towards them.
Harry spotted Blaise also, but didn't say a word. All the Gryffindors watched as Blaise stepped up behind Ron, no one daring to say a word upon looking at the look on Blaise's face. Even the teachers had quieted down and were staring at the scene below them.
Ron realized that everyone's eyes were on him, and he felt a presence behind him, and he slowly turned around, and was met with Blaise's fist to his face.
Draco sat back and smiled, truly smiled at the look on Ron's face once Blaise pulled his fist back from his face. He had been waiting for the day that someone would punch Weasley, he absolutely despised the kid, and was surprised it took someone this long to deck the kid. Although usually, Harry, Hermione and Ginny were there to defend him. Draco looked at Ginny, who looked had watched Blaise punch Ron, without saying a word. She actually looked smug?
Draco then shifted his gaze to Potter, who had seen the whole thing, and then turned his head away, pretending he hadn't seen anything.
Draco smirked. Clearly Harry and Ginny were not overly enthused with the way that Ron had treated their precious Head Girl. And from the looks of it, they had both thought that Ron had deserved to be punched.
Ron, who was a complete idiot, stood up angrily.
"Oi! What the hell was that for Zabini?" Ron yelled angrily.
"You know exactly what it is for. Be happy that's all I did." Blaise said darkly.
"What happens between me and Hermione is none of your business" Ron said coldly.
"Actually it is, as she is one of my best friends. And no one gets away with treating my friends that way. Plus, everyone else here wanted to do that, I was just the only one with the balls to actually do it. As you can see, no one is standing up to defend you, so they clearly feel that that punch was deserving"
Ron turned and looked at Ginny and Harry. Ginny raised an eyebrow at him, but said nothing, and Harry refused to look at Ron.
Ron turned back to face Blaise, a scowl on his face.
"That's what I thought. Anyways, I hope you have a terrible day. Potter, Weaslette" Blaise said acknowledging them with a nod before he turned around and walked back over to the Slytherin table, where everyone was staring at him in awe.
"I can't believe you just did that" Pansy stated awestruck.
"The git deserved it" Blaise stated dryly.
"I'm not saying he didn't, I'm just surprised you did it, and that Potter and Weasley's sister didn't jump up to defend him like they normally do."
"Well clearly they are on Hermione's side"
"I don't care if they're on the Mudbloods, or that red headed git's side. I just enjoy watching the lot of them get what they deserve" Pansy stated smugly.
Blaise turned his attention away from Pansy, ignoring her and the rest of her comments. He turned and looked at Draco, who was staring at him with an amused look on his face.
"What?" Blaise asked.
"Oh nothing" Draco stated smirking.
"Seriously Malfoy, why are you so amused?"
"Because I have waited for the day to see somebody knock that kid a new one. I've always wanted to do it, but having Potter and the Mudblood constantly at his back it's hard to do so. Trust me I have been trying to figure out a way to do something like that for years."
"Well I didn't do it for your amusement. I did it because he deserved it." Blaise stated.
"I honestly don't care why you did it. I'm just glad you did. It was amusing and entertaining to see the look on his face, especially after he realized that nobody was standing behind him."
"Whatever. Have you seen Hermione at all? She isn't here for breakfast."
Draco debated on telling Blaise that he had indeed seen her, that last night she had been an utter wreck and that she was probably still sleeping through the shock that she was experiencing, but then he would have to explain how he knew. And he did not want to have to get into that conversation with Blaise, and admit that he had willingly helped Hermione. It was against his nature, to help people, especially a Mudblood. She had caught him at a moment of weakness he assumed. Besides, he was used to seeing Hermione strong and fighting back, not a complete mess like she was. It wasn't right seeing the usual flame non existent in those chocolate brown eyes of hers. Not to mention that Blaise would more than likely have some snarky comment about how it was nice that he helped her, and that maybe he was starting to realize that she was just like them and all that utter nonsense that he was constantly going on about while trying to convince him of what a good person Hermioine was.
"No, I haven't" Draco stated tonelessly.
"What's the password to your dorm?"
"First of all, I'm not giving you my password because then I'm going to have to worry about you sneaking into my dorm whenever the hell that you please, and I like my peace and quiet. And second, no one is supposed to know where she is staying, so if you go barging in there demanding to see her I am not only going to get in supreme crap from her, but probably Dumbledore as well. They stressed keeping the living arrangements a secret, don't make me regret telling you Zabini."
"Right, I forgot that it wasn't known. I'm just worried about her and I guess it slipped my mind."
Draco waved him off, showing he accepted his somewhat apology.
"Can you check on her mate?"
Draco looked at Bliase like he had grown three heads.
"Please tell me you are not serious. Why on earth would I check on her?"
"Because you're the only one that has access to her at the moment"
"So that means I have to play babysitter and check up on her? No thank you. It's a break up, the girl will get over it. People experience things like that all the time, it's a way of life. Besides, it's the Weasley, he's not exactly handsome or some prize, he can't be that hard to get over. Hell, she's probably going to be thankful that she doesn't have to end up with garbage like him."
"Are you saying that Hermione is better than Weasley?" Blasie asked lifting an eyebrow.
Draco's narrowed his eyes at Blaise. "I would never say such a thing, both him and that Mudblood are just as bad as one another. He's just more useless than she is, especially considering he actually has magical blood in his body. And before you say anything else and try and twist my words, the Mudblood isn't a prize either. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm leaving before you try and look into something that isn't there."
Blaise watched as Draco strutted out of the Great Hall. He didn't understand why Draco would not try and see what a good person Hermione was. He at first had believed that he was better than Hermione also, following the rules of Slytherin house of course, and he listened to everything his best friend had told him as Draco was the King of Slytherin, everyone listened to what he said, but then he had realized for himself that Hermione was not all that different then he was.
Blaise just wished that Draco would open his eyes and see what was in front of him. Regardless of if he would admit it or not, Hermione was Draco's equal in more ways then one. The only thing that Draco had over Hermione was that he was a pureblood. Once Draco got over the fact that blood literally meant nothing, then he would maybe see that Hermione was indeed his equal. Blaise knew that this was nearly impossible, as Draco had been brought up under a bad family, who had drilled things into this brain since childbirth, but he was hoping that one day Draco would take his own path and stop listening to what his father told him.
Lunch rolled around, and once again Hermione was absent, something that Blaise made sure to point out to Draco.
"It's Sunday, maybe she decided to sleep in" Draco stated annoyed.
His irritation level increased further when the Weaslette approached the Slythein table. Draco smirked however, when he took in how uncomfortable she looked. It didn't help that the entire Slyterthin table was glaring at her with murderous looks on their faces.
"Zabini, have you seen Hermione?" Ginny asked quietly, but with a lot of confidence in her tone.
"No I haven't. I was hoping that either you or Potter might have."
"I went to her dorm after breakfast to see if she was okay, but there was no answer. I even tried her password, and it didn't work. So I'm assuming that she wants no visitors. I was just wondering if she had tried contacting you at all?"
"She hasn't."
"Has it ever occurred to either of you that maybe she doesn't want the likes of you bugging her? And that she's isolating herself for a reason?" Draco said speaking up.
Ginny narrowed her eyes at him hatefully. "As you can see Malfoy, I was not addressing you, meaning that I was not asking your opinion. So you can keep your comments to yourself or save them for someone who actually cares to hear what you have to say."
Draco smirked. He loved getting the Gryffindors all riled up. It was so easy, all he had to do was talk and they were ready for a fight.
"Just trying to help" Draco stated shrugging, feigning innocence.
"Well you can shove it up your ass because nobody was asking for it" Ginny stated venomously.
Blaise chuckled at the dark look that crossed over Draco's face. Before Draco could say anything, Blaise spoke up. "If she doesn't come down by dinner, we'll go looking for her. We'll contact Dumbledore if we have to."
Ginny nodded her head in agreement. "Alright sounds good. Thanks Zabini" she said as she turned and walked back over to the Gryffindor table.
"I don't know who she thinks she is, talking to me like that." Draco hissed.
"You're just mad because she doesn't put up with your crap and stands up to you."
"Shut up" Draco snapped.
Blaise smirked.
"I don't care what you said earlier, it's either you check up on Hermione and give me an update before dinner, or I'm going to go to Dumbledore with the Weaslette. You know her and Potter aren't going to sit around and wait for Hermione to show up, they're worried, and are going to do anything to try and make sure that she is alright."
"I don't appreciate how you try and get me mixed up with all this Gryffindor drama" Draco stated.
"You're the Head Boy, it's your duty. Besides, you're also the one living with her, and the only one who is able to get in contact with her."
"I knew having the Mudblood move in with me was going to be a pain in the ass, but this? This is absolutely ridiculous. I am not her damn babysitter, nor do I care if she is okay or not."
"Draco, if you don't get back to me by dinner with information about her, I will take it into my own hands" Blasie stated warningly.
