Golden Hearts: Chapter 9: Aboard the Express
Arumus traveled with the Malfoys to King's Cross Station in a sleek, black limousine driven by a household servant. The limo seemed to jump to the ends of long traffic lines and squeeze through impossibly small gaps. After gathering his luggage, Arumus followed Draco into the wall separating platforms 9 and 10, emerging onto platform 9 3/4. He gazed at the puffing red train with excitement. Draco bid his father and mother goodbye and pushed his things to board the train. He glanced back at his family, making brief eye contact with Arumus before disappearing into the interior as Vincent and Gregory helped him with his trunk.
Arumus turned to say farewell to his aunt, who managed to offer him a cool smile. Then he approached Lucius.
"Well, Arumus, have a pleasant school year. Write to let us know if you will stay over the holidays," Lucius said, a cool smile on his face.
"I will, sir. Please, I want to ask you a question about..." Arumus paused. "About my father."
Lucius' smile faded. "And what do you wish to ask?"
Arumus gathered his courage and spoke. "Is my father truly Rodolphus Lestrange?" Arumus searched his uncle's eyes.
Lucius regarded Arumus for a few moments. "I... do not know," He finally replied. "What did Narcissa tell you?" He shot a glance at his wife.
Arumus, too, glanced at his aunt, who seemed to be judging every other adult on the platform. By the expression on her face, she found them wanting. "She didn't actually tell me anything. I just found one of her comments strange, that's all."
"I see," Lucius said, lost in thought for a moment. He returned to reality as the train whistled. "Now, Arumus, you must board the train. Perhaps we will discuss this further another time."
Arumus nodded, feeling snubbed as he struggled with his trunk. Gregory Goyle was waiting to help him maneuver it onto the train. Arumus greeted him coolly, but he felt a faint start of surprise.
"This is unusually polite behavior, Gregory..." Arumus commented.
"Draco sent me to help you," Gregory explained gruffly, glancing a little apprehensively at Arumus.
"Ah, yes..." Arumus smiled his small, secretive smile. "Well, thank him for me, then, Gregory," Arumus said. "I can manage now that we are aboard. I appreciate your assistance." Arumus spoke the last phrase as a clear dismissal, and Gregory stomped off.
Arumus peered into the nearest compartment and realized that most were full. He heaved his trunk down the aisle until he encountered a compartment containing only two boys. They seemed to be bent over a book in an intense conversation, and both were holding their wands. Arumus slid the door open and poked his head inside.
"May I join you?" He asked.
Both boys looked up at him, then at each other. The one with brown hair and eyes, a kind of sharpness about his features, shrugged, and the other, blonde with green eyes, nodded and replied. "Sure."
Arumus pulled his trunk inside the compartment, and the two boys stood to help him lift it to the luggage racks. Arumus watched them both shrewdly from the corner of his eye, catching a faint wand movement as the blonde boy stowed his wand away before taking one end of the trunk.
"Thank you," Arumus told them after they finished.
"No problem." The blonde boy held out his hand formally, his eyes flashing with mischief. "My name is Jordan Hitarsus."
Arumus shook his hand, but at the last moment, he pulled out his wand with his left hand, flicking it slightly before pointing it directly at Jordan. He still held onto Jordan's right hand as he spoke. "It's a pleasure to meet you, but you should think twice before releasing my hand. I noticed that you cast a delayed stinging jinx before helping me with my trunk. I have just altered the perimeters of your delay..."
Jordan gaped slightly. "You can't do that! You're a first year."
"Age does not always matter in the world of magic..." Arumus replied mysteriously.
The boy with dark hair laughed. "You've found a keeper, Jordan." He turned to Arumus. "I'm Percival Tarragon." Percival did not offer his hand. Instead, he brandished his wand to banish the stinging hex.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you..." Arumus warned.
"Why?"
"Just trust me, it's better if I do it." Arumus waved his wand lazily and let go of Jordan's hand. Then he explained. "I harmonized the spell to respond only to my wand. It would have stung you both magnificently if either of you had tried to disarm it. It was, after all, a very effective hex." He nodded to Jordan.
Percival shook his head in disbelief. "I didn't think that was possible. Why don't you sit down and introduce yourself properly?"
Arumus sat, tucking his wand away. "My name is Arumus Lestrange. You two must be in Slytherin, I take it?"
"Yes. How'd you guess?" Jordan smiled slyly. "We already dealt with three first years and two seconds. We weren't planning on sharing our compartment. However, you have proven worthy of our company. Percival and I are in third year."
Percival seemed thoughtful. "Lestrange... Hey, aren't your parents doing a stint in Azkaban for something?"
"Ah. Yes, they are." Arumus sighed, and then continued. Best to get this over with. "They tortured some Aurors into insanity." He thought he had spoken casually enough.
Both were silent for a moment, but then Jordan whistled. "That takes some guts... and skill..." He paused. "Have you ever... uh... visited them in prison?"
"No." Arumus failed to keep the irritation from his voice. "I was raised by the Malfoys, and my aunt would not allow it. She doesn't consider it an appropriate place for children."
"Oh." Jordan seemed slightly disappointed.
Percival spoke. "So, how'd you learn all that stuff? You can't have had your wand more than a month at the most..."
"I just read a lot, that's all."
Jordan looked at Arumus in disbelief. "There's no way you could get all that from a mere book. Altering another wizard's spell perimeters on a delay? You can't do that without practice."
Arumus felt uncomfortable, so he just shrugged and didn't answer.
Percival seemed to understand. "I won't tell. We both believe rules were created to be broken."
Jordan nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. If it makes you feel any better, I promise I won't tell anyone either."
Arumus looked first into Jordan's green eyes, searching for truth. Satisfied, he weighed Percival's truthfulness. They both were completely serious, and Arumus could see no trace of dishonesty about their claims.
"Very well. However, if either of you breathe a word, I'm afraid you will come to regret it..." Arumus said in a soft, slightly threatening voice.
"A man after my own heart!" Declared Jordan. "When in doubt, threaten undying pain upon revenge."
Percival smiled wryly. "I think he's serious, Jordan. I don't want to discover whatever brand of regret he might be ready to serve."
Jordan arched a brow. "Percival's the sensitive type, Arumus. I, on the other hand, rarely take people seriously unless they prove to be capable of true evil. Needless to say, I never take anyone except Professor Snape seriously."
"What did he do to prove he is capable of true evil?" Arumus asked curiously.
Jordan regaled the tale with apparent relish. "He got fed up with my 'flippant tongue' and gave me detention for two weeks straight. Normally, that alone would be far from enough to convince me. However, over the successive evenings, he convinced me that I was copying an incantation that would turn me into a toad once completed. Still not entirely sure that it would not have worked. Scared the wits out of me. He allowed me to stop copying the incantation after I began calling him 'sir.'” He paused. “So, Arumus, do you think you are capable of such a thing?"
Arumus smiled blandly. "Do you really want me to frighten you witless to earn your respect? I should remind you that you needn't call me 'sir,' Jordan."
Jordan laughed. "You have nerve, that's for sure."
Percival smiled, returning to the subject that had caught his interest. "But, really, Arumus, where did you learn all that stuff?"
Arumus decided to reveal a portion of the truth. "I read, and I used to steal my relatives' wands to practice. My uncle used to set a boatload of delayed curses to keep me out of his study, but he gave up after I kept getting past them..." Arumus shrugged.
"A fellow rule-breaker. Know what house you'll be in?" Jordan asked.
"I am sure I'll be in Slytherin. It is where I belong." Arumus said simply.
"Excellent," Jordan said.
"I hope so," Agreed Percival.
They sat in a companionable silence for a few moments, and Arumus felt the train lurch into motion. He smiled a slight smile. He was finally on his way to Hogwarts.
