Draco grumbled as he approached Hermione's door. He couldn't believe that he, Draco Malfoy, was taking orders from his best friend, and actually doing them. He could care less as to how Hermione was, he knew she wasn't dying, she had a break up, something that she needed to deal with on her own, and not be pestered by everyone to see if she was okay. Obviously she wasn't, which was why she was hiding out in her room in the first place. And here he was, going to bug her in order to get Blaise off of his back.
Draco knocked on the door three times forcefully. He heard movement from the other side, and the door creaked open. He spotted a mass of brown curly hair and brown eyes.
"Oh good, you're alive. Now I can go and inform your annoying friends that you're alive and well, and keep them off my back."
"They're worried about me?" Hermione asked softly.
"No, I'm just here checking on you because I care. Obviously they're worried, considering the Weaslette went to your old dorm room and was knocking on the door and you didn't answer. Smart move there Mudblood. You have them asking questions, and it's hard to cover for you when I know where you are. They're going to go to Dumbledore if they don't hear from you or see you before dinner. So get up, stop moping over that pathetic excuse of a wizard you called a boyfriend, and get your ass to the Great Hall for dinner." Draco snapped.
Hermione looked shocked, and then he saw her eyes narrow.
"Just because you have no heart Malfoy doesn't mean that other people don't. I just found out that my boyfriend was sleeping with that tart while we were together. I gave myself completely to that prat, so EXCUSE ME for being a little upset about it!" Hermione yelled, slamming the door in Draco's face.
"Good to know you're feeling better Granger" Draco yelled through her doorway.
Hermione swung the door open, looking at him dangerously.
"I am not feeling better Malfoy" she snapped.
"Compared to last night, you look a lot better." Draco commented. "You don't look upset.." he said studying her. "No, you have that fire in your eyes, the one I am so accustomed to. You look pissed."
"That's because I am pissed Malfoy" Hermione stated.
"Good, maybe you can go and punch Weasley too, I must admit I would love to see that happen twice in one day."
"Who punched Ron?" Hermione asked curious.
"Blaise"
"What? Why?" Hermione asked confused.
"Defending your honor I guess. I really don't know why he did it. But regardless, it was quite amusing to watch. Especially when Potter and his red headed girlfriend didn't do anything about it."
"I wish I was there to see that" Hermione said, an evil smirk on her face as she pictured it.
"Well, like I said, please feel free to punch that idiot in the face again at dinner time, I could use some entertainment." Draco stated walking away.
"Who said I'm going to dinner?" Hermione asked.
Draco turned back around and studied her. "You're going to dinner whether you like it or not, even if I have to drag you out of your room by your hair."
Hermione narrowed her eyes at him. "I don't have to listen to you."
"You're right. Why don't I go and let everyone know that you're alright, just really moody, and then have them ask me how I know. Or better yet, explain to them how I got you to open up your dorm room to me, Draco Malfoy of all people, yes that would make for an interesting story. It would probably piss off your friends too, so actually, that might be interesting.." Draco said contemplating the situation.
"Alright Malfoy, I get your point. Stop being such a prat about it."
"There's the Mudblood that I love to hate" Draco said before turning around and heading towards his room, where he shut the door behind him without looking back.
Once Draco was in his room he let out a deep breath. There, he had done Blaise's bidding and had pretty much blackmailed Hermione into going to dinner. Which, he knew that she would attend because she wasn't allowed to tell her friends where she was staying, and having him know where she was and how she was doing would cause one too many questions.
He set his wand on his nightstand, and green numbers automatically popped up into the air. Draco had done a spell that whenever his wand was placed on his nightstand, the time would show and his alarm would be set automatically. It was more convenient then having to figure it out for himself, and he didn't have to worry about forgetting to set his alarm every morning.
Draco found that he was actually somewhat glad that Hermione was doing better. Not because he cared about her, but because he hated seeing girls crying and weak. It was unlike Hermione to be seen like that, especially in front of him, and it made him uncomfortable. He liked when she was feisty and sassy towards him, as he enjoyed riling her up and making her snap. It was a form of entertainment for him, and he found it fun. Seeing how much he could say before he caused her to go past her breaking point and flip out on him.
He flopped down on his bed, which was made of silver silk sheets, and an emerald green duvet with matching pillowcases. Draco himself was sort of a neat freak, so nothing in his room was out of place. Everything had a spot, so he knew where to find it, and also to know if anybody had been in his room. He sighed as he felt the familiar comforts of his room, which was still colder then most rooms in the castle. Draco didn't get cold easily, and didn't like overheating, so he kept his room at a temperature that was comfortable for him. He also enjoyed darkness, which was why his room was so dark. Living in the dungeons for the past six years, you got accustomed to having a dark room, and having it all lit up and bright just didn't feel right.
Draco realized he must have dozed off when he woke up to the sounds of Hermione thrashing around in the living room, more than likely making a racket on purpose in order to annoy him. He silently thanked her for waking him up, otherwise he would have missed dinner, and he was not a happy camper when hungry. He knew there was a way into the kitchens, but he still had not discovered it, something that pissed him off a lot more than he cared to admit.
He threw his door open dramatically, and spotted Hermione sitting on the couch, dressed and looking back to normal.
"So, it looks like you're going to dinner after all. Wise choice Mudblood" Draco said lazily.
"I'm not going because of you" Hermione stated. "I'm only going to assure my friends that I'm alright."
"And are you alright?" Draco inquired.
Draco caught Hermione's eyes water momentarily, but she controlled her emotions and whisked it away quickly.
"I'm fine."
"And I'm an angel" Draco replied sarcastically.
"Why do you care whether I'm fine or not?" Hermione asked, her voice cracking.
Draco wanted to smack himself for asking too many questions. Now he looked like he actually cared whether or not she was okay. "I don't really. I can just tell that you're trying to put up a front of pretending you're okay. So you might want to work on it a bit if you're going to convince your friends."
Hermione closed her eyes and swallowed, and looked at him with determination all over her face. "I will convince them that I am fine. Because I don't want Ron to know how badly he hurt me. In fact, I want him to suffer. He's the one who messed up, and I want him to realize it."
Draco had to admit, he felt some form of respect for her. He could see that she was hurting, but she was doing a pretty good job of holding herself together. He wondered if she would be able to stay that strong as soon as she saw Ron. He was going to say this to her, but decided against it. If he said that, he would once again say too much and would look like he cared about the entire situation, when in reality he did not.
"On that note, let's go" Draco said walking towards the door.
"I don't need a babysitter Malfoy, I'm fine" Hermione stated stubbornly as she pushed past him to get through the door.
Draco shook his head. Maybe he was wrong about being relieved that the old Granger was back.
Hermione opened the doors to the Great Hall, her head held high. She felt all eyes on her as soon as she walked in, and ignored all the stares and whispers. She turned her head to the Gryffindor table, and spotted one face in particular. She felt anger rise up inside of her, and she mustered the must hateful glare that she could and sent it Lavenders way, who actually shuddered and looked away, a look of panic on her face. Hermione smirked, and walked towards the Gryffindor table. She felt her breath catch in her throat as she spotted Ron staring at her, but she made sure to let no emotion show on her face. She looked away from him and spotted Harry and Ginny, who were both looking at her with concern. She smiled at them, and sat down across from them, a few seats away from Ron, who was staring at her intently.
"Hermione, how are you?" Ginny asked softly.
"I'm fine Ginny, how are you?" Hermione asked, trying to keep her voice strong.
Ginny leaned in towards her. "Honey, I know you're probably hurting right now, and I am so sorry for what my brother did, but I am also so proud of you for walking in here like you did just now with your head held high. You are a strong girl and I know that you can get through this."
Hermione felt her eyes start to sting, and her eyes watered. "Thanks Gin" Hermione said quietly.
Ginny reached across the table and squeezed Hermione's hands reassuringly.
"Me and Harry are both here for you" Ginny stated.
Hermione looked at Harry, who was nodding his agreement.
"Thanks guys" Hermione said smiling.
"You must be absolutely starved" Ginny stated changing the subject, much to Hermione's relief. "Missing both breakfast and lunch, I don't know how you do it. I would be dead on the floor by now."
Hermione laughed a genuine laugh at her friends over exaggeration. "Ginny, it is not humanly possible for you to die after only missing two meals."
"Maybe in your world, but in mine I need to eat every meal, and sometimes snack in between."
The food appeared on the table, and Ginny grabbed Hermione's plate and threw something of everything on her plate and then sat it back in front of her. "There you go, bon appetite!"
Hermione looked down at her plate, her eyes wide. Then she looked up at Ginny. "Gin, there is no way I can eat everything you just stacked on my plate. That's enough to feed at least three people!"
"Well then, eat what you can. You are not leaving this table until you have at least put a dent in your food."
"Ginny, you're going to end up killing the poor girl by overfeeding her" Harry said laughing.
"I am not!" Ginny said acting offended.
"Such a drama queen" Harry said smiling as he leaned in and gave Ginny a peck on the lips.
Hermione felt her chest tighten at the show of love between her two best friends.
Ginny pulled back from Harry and looked at him sternly indicating Hermione.
"Oh, I'm sorry Hermione, you probably didn't want to see that" Harry said realzing what he had done.
Hermione sent him a small smile. "Honestly Harry, don't worry about it. You don't have to act differently around me now. You and Ginny are in love and are allowed to show your affection for one another, please don't let me stop you."
"You'll find true love one day Hermione, and then me and Harry will be the one's saying that exact same thing to you" Ginny said optimistically.
Hermione smiled through her sadness. She didn't think that she was ever going to find love. She had thought that she had already found it with Ron, and look how that had turned out for her. Hermione knew that not a lot of guys were interested in her, they were intimidated by her because of her brains. And a lot of other guys were afraid to like her because of the body guards that she had. No one wanted to mess with Harry Potter's best friend, because they knew that they would then have Harry to deal with also, and nobody wanted to be on Harry's bad side.
"Thanks Gin"
"No need to thank me, it's the truth. Now start eating before I come over there and sit on your lap and start feeing you myself" Ginny said dangerously.
Hermione picked up her fork and dug in.
Blaise watched Hermione intently, wanting to see how she was doing. From the looks of things, she didn't seem too bad. But then again, she did have her back to him. He had seen her tense up once, but had relaxed again almost immediately.
Blaise knew that Hermione was a strong girl, and that when she did finally decide to show her face again, that she would do so with her head held high, which is exactly what she had done when she had entered the Great Hall. The whispers had started upon her entrance, and she had acted indifferent to it. Although, he did see her staring at someone intently, and when he looked over he had realized it was Lavender, and from the look on her face, Hermione was not looking at her in a friendship manner.
"You happy?" Draco asked from beside him.
"I'm happy that she is finally eating, yes."
"I don't see why you care so much" Draco drawled.
"She's my friend" Blaise stated strongly.
"I know that. But I mean it's not like you had anything to do with what happened, so why are you letting it affect you as much as it is? So what, the Weasley is a cheating bastard, who cares."
"I care because he hurt one of my friends. Something you would understand if you cared about anyone but yourself."
"Caring is for the weak. You don't see me getting all emotional and involved in other peoples drama. Sorry that I'm just smart and refuse to let myself worry about other people."
Blaise shook his head at his friend sadly. "If that's how you're going to live the rest of your life then I feel bad for you. You're going to end up all alone."
"I would prefer that compared to what my father has set up for me. I'm betrothed to Pansy, something that was chosen for me when we were both born. Sorry for not being overly excited about it."
"Pansy is your friend, it could be worse" Blaise stated.
"Pansy is an annoying overdramatic nuisance that has the intelligence level of a ten year old. Father could have at least tried to find me someone with a bit more common sense and intellect. But no, he wants to keep the alliance between our two families, and this way it guarantees him a Pureblood grandchild."
"Draco, you're one of the most intelligent guys at this school, and the only person who can even compare to you on an intelligence level is.."
"Don't even say it" Draco said cutting him off.
"Well you know it's true. She's the only girl here with even close to half of the intelligence that you have."
"And my father is so thrilled about that, let me tell you. He doesn't let me hear the end of it. Being beaten in grades by a Mudblood, being beaten in Quidditch by Potter, the list goes on and on."
"Draco your father is an idiot that expects way too much of you."
"Don't speak about my father that way" Draco hissed fiercely.
"Sorry that it's the truth. No matter what you do, it is not good enough for that man. I wish you would open your eyes and realize that you are better than your father, that you don't have to do everything he tells you. You are your own person Draco, and I wish you would come to terms with that. You're an adult, you can do what you want, make your own decisions, not follow in his footsteps and take orders from him like a child."
Draco slammed his hand on the table, knocking his pumpkin juice over. "It's not that easy." He snapped. "If I even step a toe out of line, I am punished for it. Besides, my father believes in me, I will not disappoint him."
Blaise shook his head at his friend sadly. "Whatever Draco."
"Sorry I'm not a pureblood traitor who decided to love Mudbloods and fight on the light side. I am true to my name, and our blood status. If the Dark Lord knew that you decided to switch sides and fight against us, what do you think he would do?"
"We both know exactly what he would do, which is why you are not going to say anything Draco. We've been best friends for years, and I would really hope that you would not sell out your best friend to the Dark Lord just because I don't agree with what you all believe in."
"So you are going to fight opposite me when the time comes" Draco stated slowly.
"If you choose to fight for the Dark Lord, then yes."
"If I choose? My destiny has been set out for me since the day I was born, I'm a Malfoy, meaning I follow the Dark Lord and fight by his side. My family is one of his top leading families, do you think he would just let me get away?"
"There's always a way Draco, you could go and talk to Dumbledore."
"Oh, and what? Sell out the Dark Lord so I have a bounty on my head? All so I can help Potter win? I can't wait to see the day when Saint Potter finally falls."
"You would wish that on him?"
"Why wouldn't I?"
"Because he's young, the same age as us. Do you honestly think he deserves to die for something that he had no control over? Do you honestly think that he enjoys being the 'Boy Who Lived?' If given the choice, I am sure that he would rather be someone other than himself."
"I highly doubt that, he loves the attention."
"Is that how you would want to be remembered? As the Boy Who Lived? He had a reputation before he even understood what it meant. I couldn't imagine a life like he has had to deal with. There are a lot better ways of gaining fame. He didn't have a choice in the matter, and look, the Dark Lord has been hunting him down ever since."
"That's enough" Draco stated, signaling the end of the conversation.
