Summary: Response to TSS Contest #4 Serpent meets Lion challenge #1. Post War. Draco refused
the Mark. Harry defeated Voldemort. Draco and Harry are both working as Unspeakables for the
Ministry. They are ALWAYS bickering. Their supervisor is sick of both of them and sends them off
on an impossible task to recover some lost artifact which he and everyone else in the department
believes is a myth. Sometime on their journey the two stop fighting and start shagging.
~Parseltongue~
Neville Longbottom was fed up and frustrated. His top two Unspeakables were constantly at each
others throat and he was at his wit’s end. They had nearly caused several explosions with their
constant bickering. He thought he might have finally found a way to solve the problems.
He has owled both men and told them to meet him in his office this afternoon. They would be
leaving on a mission for the ministry the next morning. He was hoping that this would force them to
work together. He rounded the corner to his office and saw both men standing there glaring and
sneering at each other. He gave a silent sigh and prayed that his plan would work.
“Good afternoon gentlemen, I’m glad you could make it. Follow me please.” Neville had to hide his
grin as they both jumped when he greeted them. He opened the door to his office and gestured for
them to take a seat while he moved around behind the desk.
“I’m sure you’re both wondering why you were called here today. I have a mission I need the two of
you to take on. I need you to locate the daggers of Slytherin. The last known location was his home
in Scotland. No one is really sure where his land is but we suspect it is not far from Hogwarts. It is
said that only a Parseltongue can gain entrance to Slytherin’s property. Now do you have any
questions?”
“If you need a Parseltongue to find the properties, why is he going along?” Harry Potter asked while
pointing toward the man sat next to him.
“I thought it would be a good idea to send a former Slytherin along. He would know what to look for
in the way of traps and such.” Neville responded slightly exasperated.
“Look, Neville, you know Potter’s just worried that I’m going to kill him if I go with. We won’t
succeed on the mission. Why not send Zabini with him instead?” came the drawling voice of Draco
Malfoy. Neville looked at him and shook his head.
“I know that you know exactly why it has to be you that goes with Harry. We are all sick of the
bickering the two of you are constantly doing. I was hoping that this mission would force the two of
you to work together and perhaps get along.” Neville was sure he heard Harry mutter ‘Yeah right’
and Draco just stared at him.
“Look I don’t know what has gotten into you since the war ended but you are going to have to work
this out. Frankly I’m rather surprised at you, Harry. You practically fought side by side with Draco
during the war. You know for a fact that he never took the Dark Mark. What problem could you
still possibly have with him?” Neville stared at Harry for a long moment before Harry looked away
saying nothing in his defense.
“Are there any more questions?” Neither man said a word. “Alright then. I expect you both ready
to leave by noon tomorrow. I want to see you back here at 11:30 so I can give you any last minute
details. Dismissed gentlemen.” Both men stood up, glared at the other and stormed from the room.
XXX
Harry Potter was not in a good mood. He couldn’t believe that Neville was making him go on a
mission with Malfoy. He knew the real reason he was always fighting with him was because he
couldn’t tell the blonde beauty how really felt about him.
‘Oh well maybe I will finally be able to work up the courage on this trip.’ Harry thought to himself
and then snorted bitterly. ‘My luck though he will be as straight as a wand.’
XXX
Draco Malfoy was in heaven. He got to spend an undetermined amount of time with the object of his
dreams. He really hated fighting with Harry, but the other man generally started them. He wasn’t
sure why it happened but he suspected that Harry was trying to hide something. He was going to use
this trip as a way to find out.
As soon as he got home, packed everything he thought he would need into a weightless backpack and
then went to bed dreaming of what the next few days might bring.
XXX
It was just before 11:30 the following morning when both men were ushered into Neville’s office.
Neville was sitting there going thru some files and didn’t look up until they had both taken a seat in
front of his desk.
“Good morning gentlemen, I trust you both slept well?” Neither man said a word and Neville rolled
his eyes in exasperation. “Right then. As I said yesterday, I want you to try and locate the Daggers of
Slytherin. We believe that his home is in Scotland not far from Hogwarts. Harry, have you ever been
back in the Chamber of Secrets since our second year?”
“I did some training down there during sixth and seventh year. Why?” Harry was truly curious why
Neville had asked.
“We believe that there is a passage of some sort between the Chamber and Slytherin’s home. Did you
ever see anything like that when you were down there?”
“No, but I never really looked around that much when I was down there.” Harry knew Draco was
staring at him in disbelief. Draco could tell that he was lying about not looking around when he had
been down there. Harry knew exactly what passage Neville was talking about as he had explored it
during Christmas of 7th year. He had spent Christmas at Hogwarts by himself, except for the teachers.
He had done a lot of exploring down in the Chamber. He had found the weapons he needed to finally
end the war.
“Ok. We have a couple of options here. You can floo over to the Three Broomsticks and then walk
up to Hogwarts, or you can apparate to Hogsmeade and walk up. We also can set up a portkey to take
you to the area we believe Slytherin’s property to be in. What would you like to do?”
“I, personally, would like to see if we can find anything in the Chamber of Secrets. It would be better
than portkeying to an unknown area.” Draco put in before Harry could say anything. Harry shot a
glare in his direction. Draco just smirked back at him before turning his attention back to Neville.
“Ok. Did you want to floo or apparate over to Hogsmeade?”
“IF we floo over is there anyway that we can just floo into the Headmistress’ office?” Harry asked.
He really didn’t want to have to walk all the way up to Hogwarts.
“No, you will need to either floo or apparate into Hogsmeade and then walk.” Neville answered.
“I’d prefer to apparate in. I never really have liked flooing in.” Harry answered. He never really had
gotten the hang of it and almost always ended up on his face.
“Alright. Are you both ready to leave then?” Both men just nodded. “Ok. I’ll be expecting a report
on your progress in a few days. See you when you get back.” Neville said, raising to his feet. Draco
and Harry stood and left the office heading to the apparition point in the ministry.
XXX
As soon as Harry appeared in Hogsmeade he started walking toward the castle in the distance. He
heard Draco apparate in behind him and also heard a slight growl coming from his companion when
he realized that Harry was already heading for the school. Draco quickly caught up to him and sent a
glare his way. Harry didn’t even look in his direction.
They quickly reached the school and went straight to the second floor girl’s bathroom that the entrance
to the Chamber was in. Harry could feel Draco staring at him again. There was another entrance to
the Chamber down by the Slytherin dorms but Harry wanted Draco to experience it the same way he
had the first time he had gone down there. When the men got there they were greeted by Moaning
Myrtle.
“Harry. You haven’t come to see me in years. You haven’t been back since you graduated. Why?”
Myrtle’s eyes began to fill with tears.
“Sorry, Myrtle, this is the first time I’ve even been back in Hogwarts since I graduated. I’d love to
stay and catch up but I’m really in a hurry.” With that Harry turned to the charmed sink and told it to
open in Parseltongue. He could feel Draco staring at him again. Draco had not heard him speak
Parseltongue since second year. The sink began to slowly move down as it had in second year and the
pipe was exposed. Harry turned to Draco and motioned for him to go first.
“Potter, why are we going this way? Isn’t there an entrance down by the Slytherin dorms?” Draco
asked looking at the pipe in disgust.
“I never found one leading into the dungeons. This is the only way I know of to get down there.”
Harry replied. Draco just looked at him before groaning and sliding into the pipe. He never saw the
smirk Harry had when he slid down.
It was not nearly as bad as the first time Harry had gone down there. He had cleaned it up quite a bit
when he spent so much time down there during sixth and seventh year. The body of the Basilisk had
been incinerated and the blood and ink cleaned up. When they reached the actual entrance to the
Chamber, Harry once again hissed at it to open. They cautiously entered the Chamber and looked
around, Harry in contemplation and Draco in fascination.
Harry walked further into the Chamber and turned around to face Draco. “Well Malfoy, where do
you want to start looking?”
Draco looked around again before turning back to Harry. “I don’t know Potter, where do you suggest
we start looking? You know this place better than I do.” Harry just stared at him and then looked
around again trying to remember. He was surprised to find that he really didn’t remember where the
entrance was. He hoped that by looking around it would jog his memory.
“I’m not sure where to start. I guess we split up and just see if there are any passages leading away
from here.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me, Potter. I know that you’ve spent a lot of time down here. I also know
that you were lying to Neville when you told him that you never saw a path leading to Slytherin’s
property. So where is the entrance?”
“I don’t remember where it is Malfoy, alright? Now are you going to help me look or are you going
to fight with me all day?” Harry replied indigently.
“What good is it going to do for me to look? I can’t speak Parseltongue, Harry. Only a Parseltongue
would be able to open the passage to Slytherin Manor.” Draco had turned his back to Harry but could
feel him staring at him.
“Now what Potter? Why are you staring at me?”
“You just called me Harry.”
“That is your name, isn’t it?”
“But you haven’t called me that since . . . ” Harry trailed off, unable to finish his sentence. He heard
Draco give a sigh from behind him, and started walking away, not wanting to hear what the blonde
may have to say. He was quite happy holding on to his past hatred of the man behind him. As he
searched, trying to find the entrance to Slytherin Manor, his mind became lost in memories.
Flashback
Harry was standing in the middle of his room before the leaving feast in shock. He had been going out
with Draco Malfoy since Christmas of that year. He had thought things were going really well for
them. Draco had contacted him earlier that day saying that they needed to talk. Harry had met with
him feeling that something was very wrong. He was right. Draco had broken up with him and not
given a reason behind it.
End Flashback
Harry sighed again, looking around when something jogged his memory. He walked forward putting
his hand on what appeared to be a blank stretch of wall and hissed for it to open. It slowly started to
shift open.
“Malfoy, over here.” Harry called back over his shoulder. He barely acknowledged when Draco came
up behind him.
“So, is this it?” The entrance to Slytherin Manor?” Draco asked sounding surprised. Harry just
nodded before leading the way into the dark passage. Draco followed behind him after whispering
‘Lumos’ so that he could see where he was going. It wasn’t long before they had reached the entrance
to the Manor.
“I think we should get some food before we start looking for the daggers. I’m kinda hungry myself.”
Draco said in his usual drawl. Harry merely nodded leading the way to the kitchens. Draco was
surprised to see house-elves upon entering the large kitchen. He watched cautiously as Harry
approached one and addressed it.
“Linton, would you be so kind as to make some dinner for Mister Malfoy and myself. We will be
staying here for a few days. Could you also prepare the Master suite for me and a room in the same
wing for Mister Malfoy?” Linton bowed and then disappeared from the room to presumably do as
Harry had asked. Harry then turned to Draco.
“It will take them about half an hour to prepare us something to eat. Is there something you would
like to do until then?” Harry asked.
“How about a tour of this place?” Harry merely nodded before leading the way out of the room. A
quick tour later and they were back in the kitchen preparing to sit down and eat the meal the house
elves had fixed for them.
“So Potter, where do you think the daggers might be?”
“ I’m not sure Malfoy. They could be almost anywhere. You’re an ex-Slytherin. Where do you think
Salazar might have left them?”
“ I have no idea. What if we ask a couple of the portraits if they know where they might be?”
Harry nodded and they finished their meal in silence. When they finished, they went into the study
where Salazar’s portrait was hanging. When they entered it hissed its greeting to Harry.
~Hello, again young heir. It has been many years since you have been here.~
~Hello, Salazar. How have you been?~ Harry hissed back. Salazar shrugged. Harry turned back
toward Draco missing the look that had crossed his face at Harry speaking Parseltongue.
“Salazar, I would like to introduce you to Draco Malfoy. Draco meet Salazar Slytherin.” Draco gave
a short bow before addressing the portrait of the Founder.
“Lord Slytherin, it is an honor to meet you. We have come in search of your legendary daggers. Do
you know where they might be?” Salazar turned back to Harry with a puzzled look on his face.
~Does he not know that you posses the daggers he is searching for?~ Salazar hissed to Harry, not
knowing if the other man knew and sensing that Harry was wanting to keep it a secret.
~No, he does not, Salazar. We were sent here by our supervisor at work because we are constantly
fighting. He thought that by sending us on an impossible mission he could force us to work out our
differences. No one knows that I posses your weapons.~ Harry hissed back. Salazar nodded before
turning back to Draco.
“I do not know exactly where they are, young Malfoy. I suggest you start with searching in the
armory and then perhaps my private study off the master suite.”
“Thank you Lord Slytherin. I hope to speak to you more at a later time.” Draco replied bowing. He
had noticed the puzzled look on Salazar’s face when he mentioned the daggers. He walked slowly out
of the room waiting for Harry to show him the way to the armory. He didn’t wait for long before
Harry was following him out of the room and leading the way up the stairs. Draco waited until they
were both in the armory before throwing up a locking spell in an attempt to keep Harry in the room.
“Alright Potter. What was with the look Salazar gave you when I mentioned the daggers? And don’t
act like you don’t know What I’m talking about.” Draco huffed when he saw Harry about to deny
everything. He heard Harry give a sigh before answering him.
“Just leave it for now, Draco. I don’t want to talk about it, okay?” Harry replied tiredly.
“No, Potter, I will not just leave it. I want to know what is going on. Why have you been acting like
this lately? What happened to you?”
“You want to know what’s happened, what’s wrong with me? I’ll tell you then. It’s you. You
happened. I let you into my heart and life and you threw it all away and then acted like nothing had
ever happened.” Harry yelled at Draco. Draco stood his ground knowing that this had been coming.
“You know why I walked away from all of it Potter. You know why I had to. I did it to protect you
dammit, you know that.” Draco yelled back.
“What about after everything? You defied your father and refused the mark. Why did you still stay
away from me?” Harry was trying not to let his hurt and pain show on his face and was trying to keep
the tears that formed at the corners of his eyes.
“I didn’t think you would want me back. You never gave me any indication that you cared about me.
All you’ve ever done was picked fights with me. I thought you truly hated my guts after everything I
put you through.” Draco responded nearly in tears himself.
“After what we went through in 6th year, I thought you knew I could never hate you Draco. I picked
fights with you because that was the only way I could get you to talk to me. I didn’t know what else to
do. I’m sorry.” Harry finished in barely more then a whisper.
“I’m sorry too, Harry. I honestly expected you to hate me. There were times I almost wished that you
did. I think I always knew that you never really hated me but you were scared to let me get close to
you again in case I ever left again. You do know you are the only reason I went into the Department
of Mysteries, right?” Draco asked with a goofy grin on his face. Harry just nodded. They both turned
away from the other to let some time lapse before either spoke again. They both needed time to get
their emotions in check.
Draco was the one to finally break the silence. “So Harry, about those daggers. What aren’t you
telling me?”
‘That I have them and have had them for years .’ Harry thought to himself. “Nothing, Draco. I
promise.” He replied out loud.
“Come on Harry. I know you better then that. Please, let’s not have any more secrets between us. It’s
already cost us too much time.
“Please don’t push me on this Draco. I’ll tell you when the time is right but now is not the time.”
Harry replied wearily. Draco didn’t want to let it go but know better then to push him. He reluctantly
gave up and went back to searching through the armory for the daggers.
They searched for about another hour before both felt the fatigue of the day catching up with them.
Harry was the one who finally broke the silence they had been working in.
“Draco, I don’t know about you but I’m ready to call it a day I’m beat.”
“I think you are right Harry.” At that moment there was a crack in the room and both turned to see
that Linton had entered.
“If masters’ are ready to turn in please follow Linton. I will show you to your rooms.” Linton said
before leading the way to the master suite.
“Here is your room Master Harry. Mister Malfoy your room is right across the hall.
“Thank you, Linton, goodnight.” Harry said before entering his room. The elf just bowed and then
disappeared with another crack.
Draco turned to his door and softly called out “goodnight Harry” then entered his room shutting the
door behind him. Draco never heard Harry say “goodnight, Dray.”
Both men lay in bed that night, neither being able to sleep as their minds were on the man across the
hall. Harry got out of bed and began to pace around his room. He wanted to end the fighting between
him and Draco. He still cared deeply about the other man and he would love the chance to give their
relationship another try. He just wasn’t sure if Draco wanted the same thing.
‘It’s time to find out, and to stop worrying about it.’ Harry chastised himself as he headed for the door
to the hall. He had just stepped out of it when the door across from him opened and Draco stepped into
the hall.
“Harry, I-I– “ Draco trailed off and ran a hand thru his hair. He flushed deeply and looked down at the
floor.
“Draco, would you come to my room. I think its time we talked things over.” Draco nodded and
followed Harry back into his room. He stood nervously in the doorway until Harry sat on his bed and
motioned him over.
“Draco, I’m tired of always fighting with you. If you want, I would like to give us another try. Can
we?” Harry looked shyly at Draco. Draco’s only response was to pull Harry into a deep passionate
kiss. Harry eagerly responded to the kiss and quickly deepened it. He ran his tongue along Draco’s
bottom lip asking for entrance and it was immediately granted. Harry groaned as their tongues came
into contact with each other and he felt a tremor run all the way down his spine. He felt all his of his
blood beginning to pool in his groin. It wasn’t long before they had to break for air. They broke away
panting, lust and love shining in both of their eyes.
“Harry, are you sure this is what you want?” Harry nodded before drawing Draco into another kiss
and pulling him on top of him as he lay down on the bed.
XXX
Neville Longbottom was setting in his office going over some paperwork when an owl tapped on his
window. It had been a week since he had sent Draco and Harry off to Slytherin manor to find the
daggers of Slytherin. He had yet to hear from them and was hoping this was their report. It was, but
what was inside surprised and pleased him more then he could say.
Neville,
We have found Slytherin Manor, but it appears that the daggers are not here. Of course I already
knew that since I have had them since 7th year. Anyway you will be pleased to know that Draco
and I have stopped fighting. As it stands right now, we will be taking an undetermined amount of
time away from the Ministry in order to pledge our vows to each other and travel a bit.
On a side note, thank you for sending us on this mission. It was the best thing that has happened
to either of us. Till we see you again.
Harry J. Potter
Draco X. Malfoy
Neville shook his head and gave a light laugh. It looked like things were definitely working
themselves out. He filed the letter away, grabbed his cloak and left his office with a new spring in his
step and a large smile on his face.
