Sirius half walked, half ran up the familiar sidewalk. The phoenix pin that he wore had lit up. James had called for help. And of all things that the dark haired wizard had expected to find, a quiet dark house hadn’t been one of them. Sirius tried to convince himself that maybe James had managed to fend off the attacker and had gone to bed; but deep down he knew better. James almost never called for help. There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t handle.
Sirius held his breath as he pushed open the broken door. As soon as he stepped inside he was sick all over the floor. The living room looked like a war zone. Pieces of broken and burned furniture lay scattered all over the floor, and blood was streaked on the walls.
He was afraid to go upstairs for fear of what he would find, but he forced himself to climb the creaky stairs one at a time. The only thing that ran through his mind as he saw the busted in nursery door was that he had gotten Lily to change the secret keeper to Wormtail to protect his dearly loved friends. It seemed that instead of protecting them, he had signed their death warrants.
He stepped inside the nursery and took in the sight. The first thing he noticed was Harry lying quietly in his crib. The young child seemed completely unconcerned with the mass destruction around him. It was so strange that Sirius had to run over and pick up his godson to make sure it wasn’t just a sick and twisted illusion. Sure enough, Harry was alive, and relatively unharmed. The only mark on him was a lightning bolt shaped cut on his forehead. It would probably leave a scar, but that was the least of the young child’s worries.
Next Sirius knelt beside Lily’s body. She was completely untouched and looked like she was simply sleeping. There was no doubt about what killed her; the killing curse. It was the only curse that killed without leaving a trace.
His attention was then turned on James. His best friend’s body was only a few feet from Lily’s, and didn’t look nearly as peaceful. James looked like he had been beaten to death with a spiked mallet. His arms and legs were arranged in unnatural positions, and no doubt broken in several places. He was drenched in blood; the carpet beneath him was soaked with the now cold red liquid.
Before Sirius could completely break down he became aware of someone else in the house. He pulled out his wand and crept out to see who it was. He was relieved to see the familiar face of Albus Dumbledore entering the house and surveying the wreckage just as Sirius himself had done. “We’re too late,” the younger wizard spoke softly. “They’re up here.”
Dumbledore nodded solemnly and joined Sirius upstairs in the nursery. A small half smile appeared on his face at the sight of Harry still alive and well. “We can be thankful that there is at least one surviving member,” he commented.
Sirius was about to say something as well when he heard a very feint groan. He could’ve sworn that the sound came from James… but it couldn’t be! He knelt down beside his friend barely daring to hope. “James…,” he whispered softly.
He hadn’t really expected anything to happened, but those sparking blue eyes actually opened! James wasn’t dead… yet. “Is… is Harry ok?” James asked in a barely audible whisper.
Sirius nodded as a few tears slid down his cheeks. “Harry’s fine. You just rest and don’t worry about a thing.” He turned to Dumbledore with an expression of hope and fear. “We need to get him to the hospital! If we act quickly he may actually make it.”
Dumbledore nodded in agreement. “Yes, and I believe I know exactly where to take him.”
The elder wizard picked Harry up in his arms and knelt down beside Sirius to grab a hold of James. Sirius grabbed a hold of Dumbledore determined to not be left behind. They disappeared from the nursery and reappeared right in front of a muggle hospital’s emergency room doors.
“This is a muggle hospital!” Sirius cried out. “We can’t bring him here!”
Dumbledore sighed and shook his head. “Sirius now is not the time to argue. His injuries for the most part are not magical in nature. Now help me carry him in.”
The dark haired wizard quit arguing for the moment and helped to carefully carry his dying friend inside the building. As soon as they stepped inside the door they were swarmed with nurses who took James straight back in a hurry.
Sirius took Harry from Dumbledore and sat quietly beside the man while he talked to a nurse. Dumbledore told her that he was James’ father, which wasn’t entirely a lie, and that they had gone to visit him and found the house torn apart, as well as James on the floor nearly dead.
Once they were finished giving the hospital all of James’ information they were told to have a seat in the waiting room. It was then that Harry started to sense that something was wrong and started to fuss. Sirius wanted nothing more than to wake up from this nightmare, but he took his godson outside to do his best to comfort him.
It was nearly four hours before they heard anything about James. A doctor came out to inform them about the situation. He told them that James’ injuries were extensive and severe, and it was nothing short of a miracle that he was still hanging on. He had multiple fractures and lacerations combined with heavy internal bleeding. The doctors had done all they could, and only time would tell if James was actually going to pull through.
They were allowed to go back to see him and Sirius almost lost it at the sight of his best friend lying there in that hospital bed. This was all his fault. If he had only continued to be their secret keeper James and Lily would be fast asleep warm and safe in their own beds.
Both Sirius and Dumbledore stayed until morning. Dumbledore said that he had a lot of business to take care of. Sirius asked that he take Harry because he too had a few things to attend to. He was bound and determined to find Peter, and make the little rat pay for this.
