Twenty nine year old Hermione Granger was proud of her bookstore, Enchanting Books. She opened it up five years after the war. It was located in Hogsmeade, which gave her an advantage of being the only bookstore there. She carried a wide variety of books, magical and Muggle.
The store was very popular with the students at Hogwarts. She had written and published an abundance of study aids for each class. These texts were her number one seller during exam time. Inside there was a small café where hot or cold drinks were served with a small assortment of sweets. There were two levels. The first floor had all the magical books, everything from the latest potions book to business in the Wizarding world. Up the spiral staircase on the second floor housed all the Muggle books and the café.
In the six years she has been in business, she had her fair share of ups and downs. The first year she wondered if she had made a terrible mistake. Not many residences visited the store. If it weren’t for the Hogwarts students, buying her study aids, she probably would have closed up shop. Once she added the café and surprisingly, the Muggle section, business picked up. By the end of her third year, she realized that her dream was a reality, and she had an established business in Hogsmeade.
She was happy and content with her business life. Her personal life was another story. After she had finished Hogwarts everyone assumed that her and Ron would get married, and so did she, to a certain degree. But after a year into the engagement, he started to treat her as if she was his slave and not his fiancée. She was always picking up after him, she did all the cooking, which she hated, and they rarely ever went out together. He tried to control what she did and what she wore. When he started to tell her, whom she was allowed to hang out with she had had enough and broke off the engagement. Ron took the break-up badly, and he started to stalk her afterwards. Hermione tried not to involve Harry or Ginny, but Ron threw them in the middle anyway. Harry and Ron’s relationship also suffered, but they still are friends. Being Hermione’s closest friend, Ginny witnessed firsthand how he treated Hermione; she was not happy with her brother and told him off. The four of them are rarely seen together anymore. Hermione has yet to date anyone since.

It was a Wednesday afternoon, her slow day. The only other employee in the store was the café worker. Hermione was unpacking her latest delivery when she heard the bell over the door ring. She looked up from the counter and put on a bright smile ready to great her customer, “Good afternoon… ” Her face fell a little when she realized who had just walked into her bookshop. “Mr. Malfoy, how can I help you today,” she said with a little annoyance in her voice.
“Miss Granger, it is still Miss, right?” He emphasized the word as if it was an insult.
Hermione’s eyes narrowed a little and ignored the question. “Is there something I can help you with?”
“This store came highly recommend for your unusual assortment of book.” He stated nonchalantly.
Hermione wondered who would recommend the senior Malfoy to her store. Whoever it was would pay dearly. “Was there something specific you were looking for?” Please, she thought. She was not in the mood to deal with a pompous, conceited, Pureblood right now. The bell rang again, alerting Hermione to a new customer.
Lucius glanced at the woman that just walked in with irritation. “No, I think I will browse for a while.” He smirked and stalked off towards the Charms section.
Hermione fumed for a second before she turned to her new customer. “Can I help you.” It came out harsher than she realized, but the customer didn’t seem to notice.
“Yes, could you point me where the Muggle, fiction books are?” the woman asked.
“Sure it is up the stairs to the right. Were looking for anything special?”
“No, I am just looking for something new, and exciting to read.”
“There is a large selection to choose from, everything from suspense to romance.”
“Thank you.” She beamed at Hermione
“You’re welcome. Just let me know if you need anything.” Hermione smiled at the woman as she made her way to the staircase.
“Really, Miss Granger, Muggle books?”
She jumped at the sound of his silky voice behind her. She turned swiftly around, “They are very popular among the residence of the village and the Hogwarts students,” she replied, her voice was laced with venom.
Lucius only nodded at her. “You work in a very interesting store.”
Hermione stared at him dumbfounded, “I don’t just work… “
He cut her off with a wave of his hand, “No need to be embarrassed. I just figured that the brightest witch to come out of Hogwarts in years would have been able to find employment that is more suitable.
Hermione eyes widened. “For your information, Mr. Malfoy, I am not merely employed here, I own this establishment!”
She stalked off angrily to the counter where a customer was waiting for her. She tried to offer a polite smile to gentleman. “Did you find everything you were looking for?”
“Yes, thank you. You have a wonderful store.”
“Why thank you. How kind of you to say so.” She offered him a bright smile, while taking a side-glance at Lucius. “Have a good day.”
As soon as the customer left, Hermione grabbed a pile of books off the counter to put away. “Are you here to buy something or did you come in just to harass me?”
He followed her, to where she kept the potions book. “I was looking for more books to add to my collection. I would be more pleasant to me if you would like my business. I could take it else where.”
Hermione mentally rolled her eyes. “Then why don’t you. It is obvious that you think so little of me.” She was fuming. Who did he think he was? Royalty?
His eyes darkened as he leant in close to her. “If I wanted to, I could make it so your store would cease to exist.”
That was all Hermione could take. She didn’t even feel her hand come up and smack the older Malfoy across the cheek. “Who do you think you are coming into my store and insulting me? I am a brilliant businesswomen and a successful published author, and my store is beloved in this community! Now, if you don’t mind I have real customers to attend. Good day!” She left him there, with a shocked look on his face, and a reddening cheek.
He narrowed his eyes at her retreating back and rubbed his inflamed face. A small grin was forming on his lips.
“Well, well, it seems you haven’t lost your fire after all,” he whispered.
He watched her ring up the woman who was looking for a Muggle book. “Did you find what you were looking for?” Hermione asked the women.
He now realized why Severus recommended this store, not just for the books, but also for the fiery storeowner. She was just what he was looking for in a partner, someone who would keep him on his toes.
On his way out of the store, he noticed the rack of study aids that she had written. That did surprise him. He had not realized that she was a published author, even though she just screamed it at him just a few moments ago.
Next to the study aids was a stand of books that grabbed his attention. He picked one of the up and started to flip through it.
He noticed that the last customer has left the store. He walked up to the counter with a smirk on his face.
Hermione inwardly groaned at her next customer. “Didn’t he leave?” she thought.
“I would like the purchase this book,” he said as he held up the book in question. Hermione had to bite her cheek to stop her from breaking down into laughter, An Idiots Guide to the Muggle Stock Market. It suited him she mused.
Her eyes narrowed at him. “Since when are you interested in Muggle businesses.”
“I've been, expanding my interests,” he said with a little purr in his voice.
Hermione faltered at his change in tone. “Was there any there anything else you were looking for?”
“No, I think that is all,” he said as he paid for his purchase.
Hermione offered him a broad grin. “Thank you for purchase. Please come again,” she said sarcastically.
He didn’t move from his spot. “You are not going to get rid of me that quickly,” he thought.
Hermione rolled her eyes and grabbed another stack of books from the counter to restock. “Was there something else you needed?” He followed her to the bookshelf.
“No.” He spun her around and trapped her against on of the bookshelves. His body never touched hers, but her head was trapped between his hands. She could smell sandalwood on him.
Very uncomfortable at his demeanor, Hermione tried to move away to no avail. “Do I need to slap you again, Mr. Malfoy?”
He leant in close to her ear. Her body react to his closeness. “Do not start something you are not willing to finish, Miss Granger.” She let out a small gasp and her eyes fluttered closed. “I look forward to our next encounter,” he purred and turned to leave the store, smiling. “Very interesting reaction I will have to explore that further,” he thought.
Hermione shivered visibly, she was trying to get her emotions under control. She tried to convince herself that she was not briefly turned on by the senior Malfoy. It didn’t work; he had ignited something in her that she hadn’t felt in years. “I’m in serious trouble,” she whispered to herself.
**
The next few weeks Hermione tried all she could to avoid Lucius, which proved to be futile since he was in her store everyday! She changed around her employees so that she was never alone with him. She didn’t want another encounter like the first one. So far, he had kept his distance. He mainly browsed the magical business book, he had ventured up to the Muggle section around the second week. Of course, he explored the business section first, not surprising to Hermione, but when he started to venture into the crime and mystery sections. Hermione laughed to herself. It seemed fitting that he would find that section interesting.
The witch felt like she was being observed, or stalked. Why was he constantly in here? Was her store that interesting to him? At least he bought something everyday or she would have thrown him out for loitering, she only wished she could get away with that.
Hermione looked at her watch. Lucius had been sitting in the café reading for nearly two hours. Hermione knew that something wasn’t quite right and she was going to get some answers. She marched up to the second floor to confront him.
She found him sitting at a corner table, drinking a latte, and reading Agatha Christie’s, Murder on the Orient Express. Walking to him, she waited for him to acknowledge her. She stood there for a few seconds, his eyes never leaving the pages. “Are you enjoying that novel?” she asked, trying to get his attention.
Lucius looked up at her. He wondered how long it would take her before she came up. He was disappointed he figured she would have confronted him a little sooner. “Actually I am. This character, Hercule Poirot, is fascinating. It is amazing how fast he seems to connect all the evidence.”
“He became one of the more popular characters of the time. She wrote him in over forty novels.” Why am I telling him this?
“I see why.”
Hermione’s brow furrowed in confusion, “I thought Muggle books were beneath you?” she said with malice.
He seemed hurt at her comment. “I never said that.”
“You implied it. In fact, it wasn’t long ago that anything Muggle or Muggle-born was beneath you.”
“Did I? My mistake.”
Hermione was taken aback. “I do not understand you, Mr. Malfoy.” she said, turned, and walked away.
Lucius smirked behind her back and was up on his feet and next to her before she made it to the stairs. “Do I intrigue you?”
“No, you annoy me. Don’t you have an actually profession to be at?” she snapped back.
“I am doing my job. The Ministry wants me to evaluate the business surrounding Hogwarts,” he replied self-importantly.
Hermione stopped halfway down the staircase. “For what purpose, may I ask?”
“To make sure no ill-activity is going on?”
Hermione raised her eyebrows in disbelief. They put him in charge of that? Had Shacklebolt finally gone mental from stress? “Well, since you have been here, irritating me for the past two weeks, did find any ill-activities in my establishment?”
Lucius smiled at the fiery brunette. “No, it seems you run a perfectly legitimate business.”
“Then why are you still here?” she fumed.
“I must confess I find your store fascinating.”
“How so, Mr. Malfoy?” she said with a bite and curiosity as she descended the rest of the stairs.
“You were able to successfully sell Muggle books to a completely wizard community.”
She held up her hand to correct him. “You are forgetting that there are more Muggle-borns living in Hogsmeade then there was ten years ago. And with the Muggle-born students attending Hogwarts, I knew that this would be the perfect place to open a Muggle/Wizard book store.”
“Indeed, you do have an eye for business.”
Hermione stared at him in disbelief. “Was that a compliment?” she asked slightly gob-smacked.
“Yes, it was, maybe you should learn to accept them.”
Hermione raised her eyebrows. “Are we actually having a civil conversation?”
Lucius smiled at her. “See, I am not the fiend you believe I am.”
Hermione stared at him for a minute. “I never thought you were a fiend, maybe an arrogant, conceited, arsehole, but never a fiend.”
Lucius stared at her with wide-eyes. “Language, Miss Granger.”
She shook her head. “Please stop calling, Miss Granger, I’m starting to feel like my mother. Call me Hermione.”
“Okay, Hermione,” Lucius purred.
Hermione inwardly shivered. “I shouldn’t be turned on by the sound of my name on his lip,” she thought.
He raised an eyebrow at her. “I noticed that you carry quite a variety of books of the sexual nature.”
“Err… I carry a large variety of all types of books. You never know what someone might be in the mood to read. Romance novels are very popular.” She walked to the back of the store towards her office.
“I’m not talking about the ridiculous books that the Muggles write.”
Hermione swelled up, but said nothing, in truth she did not care for the cheesy romance novels either. “What are you talking about then?”
“I am talking about the section of books you have buried in the corner next to the diet and exercise books.”
“Oh, that section. Like I said, I carry a large variety of books,” she quickly explained.
“Have you read any of those particular volumes?”
“I know what they are about, since I do all the ordering for stock.” She reached her office, but did not open the door. She did not want him to follow her inside.
“Do they interest you?” he asked
Hermione said nothing. She did not want to give him a reason to harass her.
“I see you are speechless.” He moved behind her against the wall next to the door. His arm circled her waist and pulled her against him.
“Please let me go. Do you want my employees to call the Aurors?”
He threaded his fingers through her hair. “Answer my question, and I will let you go. Do the books on dominance and submission interest you?”
Hermione closed her eyes. “Gods he smells good.” Before she could think, she moaned at his touch. “Yes.”
Lucius grinned at the top of her head. He leaned his head down and whispered in her ear, “Just want I suspected.” He abruptly let her go and strolled away, leaving behind a very confused and stunned witch.
Several minutes went by. Sally, one of Hermione’s afternoon employees, found her leaning against the door to her office with a blank look in her eyes. “Miss Granger, are you alright?” She lightly tapped her arm. It seemed to snap Hermione out of her catatonic state.
“What? Oh, Sally, I’m fine. I am going in my office to do some paperwork. If you need me just let me know,” she said shakily.
“Okay, did you want me to get you something to drink from the café? You look a little flushed.”
“No, I am okay, but thank you for the offer,” she replied nonchalantly and walk in her office, leaving a confused Sally behind.
Once inside the privacy of her office, Hermione sunk down in her chair and let her emotions take over. “How could I have admitted that private part of my personal life to Lucius Malfoy?”
She cried out her mortification. “What is he going to do, now that he has this piece of information?”
Hermione picked up a piece of parchment and wrote Ginny a quick note, explaining that she was going to stop by after work if it was convenient for her. She really needed to talk.
It wasn’t long before she got a reply. Ginny was more then happy for Hermione’s company.
Hermione sighed to herself. “Maybe Ginny can help me figure out what I have gotten myself into.”
A very special thanks to my betas Sbrande and Valady for all their help and suggestions.
