Golden Hearts: Chapter 1: Bullying the Bully
Arumus Caelestis Morvolo Lestrange awoke shortly after dawn and sat up in bed. He ran his fingers through his tangled dark hair and rubbed the sleep from deep blue eyes. He wanted to avoid his family this morning because he had plans of which they would not approve. He rinsed his face at the washstand in the chill water and dressed quickly in his most useful disguise, worn jeans and a t-shirt.
Arumus regarded his reflection in the mirror. His pale face seemed ghostly in the early morning light, and he shook his head as he regarded the state of his hair, making a face. He hastily wet a comb and dragged it through the knots carelessly, practicing his most dazzling smile interspersed with a studied, formal blankness in the mirror. He couldn't keep his eyes from flashing mischievously, no matter how hard he tried. He gave up, figuring some mornings were obviously better than others were, and gathering a stack of books, he left his room stealthily.
Arumus padded carefully through the huge house, meeting no one, though he caught a glimpse of the family house elf through the kitchen door as he pilfered some bread and cheese for breakfast. The elf, Dobby, bowed silently to him, but said nothing. Arumus had an understanding with Dobby. He knew the elf was often miserable, so he went out of his way to make excuses when Dobby couldn't be found. Dobby, in turn, made excuses for him when he wished to remain undisturbed. They kept each other’s desire for privacy a tight secret out of a strange brand of unspoken understanding.
Arumus walked through the Malfoy Manor grounds, gripping the books and examining his surroundings. The forest within the grounds were one part of his home that he truly loved and truly considered "home" in a way the mansion failed to meet. The lavish Manor sat upon the small rise like a dark sentinel, surrounded by manicured lawns and an ornate, gated wall, which was enchanted to recognize only the inhabitants. The forest spread outside the walls, a wild, natural deterrent for all who would wish to call but were unwelcome. The leafy green depths offered Arumus a secret refuge and valid reason to walk the grounds in the morning mist.
Arumus often trekked down to the nearest village while supposedly exploring the forest because he visited the muggle library, much to his aunt and uncle's disapproval, to check out any number of bizarre muggle-written books. He wanted to return a particularly hilarious magazine that contained numerous articles on the science of muggle space travel and how faster than light speeds should be virtually impossible to achieve. Many ideas muggles cooked up were preposterous, though some were admittedly ingenious, like escalators and canned cheese.
Arumus enjoyed reading about the muggle world, not only due to the fact that it annoyed his Aunt Narcissa to no end, but also because he had a deep, unquenchable desire for knowledge. Even muggle science was interesting when the days stretched long and the hours would invariably carry unremitting boredom without a book.
He felt that most wizards and witches were so out of touch with the outside world that they were incapable of moving incognito through the muggle world. Most of magical kind thought they had no need of such skills, but Arumus often fancied himself a master of disguise, able to move through crowds of magical and non-magical people with equal ease.
This ability was mainly due to his thin but sturdy frame and surprising agility, added to the fact that most people ignored children of his age as a matter of course. If Arumus had been a few years older, his usual expression, a kind of studied blankness, would have been largely ignored in favor of his natural good looks. As it was, most of the muggles in the village referred to him as "the cute boy who always looks so serious." Most people refrained from calling him "cute" to his face, though. Few boys appreciated that kind of compliment at his age, and Arumus was no exception.
His cousin, Draco Malfoy, unexpectedly appeared in the sky whooping like a demented bird. He swooped down riding his broom and landed with a flourish nearly atop Arumus. Arumus hopped out of the way and dropped the books and magazines as he lost his balance and fell backward.
Draco tossed back his pale blonde hair and stooped to pick up a copy of Science Weekly, sneering. "I can't actually believe you read this muggle trash." His gray eyes held contempt.
"I can't believe you can actually read, Draco," Arumus replied as he smiled a small, pseudo smile and snatched the magazine from his cousin. "Your father said your marks weren't good last year. Sometimes," he paused mockingly, "I think he wishes I was his son."
Draco's pale cheeks flushed, and he waved his broom angrily. "You think you're so smart and precious, saying something like that. My mother knows what you are, though she won't admit it. She's seen that you’re a monster and a madman."
"Will you run to my dear aunt and tattle on me? I know she'll sympathize... but Lucius will only think you weak, being bullied by your younger, smarter, gifted cousin." Arumus kept his voice pleasant, still smiling lightly.
"You foul little git, how dare you--"
Arumus cut him off. "Oh, I dare, Draco, because very few people care what I do or say." Arumus' fake smile vanished, and his sapphire eyes seemed to capture the chill of the morning air and magnify it. "And anyone who does care knows enough to stay out of my way, if they've got any brains at all..."
Draco drew his wand and backed away, putting space between himself and Arumus. "If you try anything, I'll curse you speechless. I swear, I will." Arumus could hear Draco's voice shake slightly, but his wand hand was steady.
Arumus laughed mirthlessly, taunting as he spoke ever more softly, and Draco seemed to listen in spite of himself. "You won't be so brave when we are equally armed. As soon as that day comes, I promise that you will pay dearly for every curse you've even thought of casting on me," Arumus whispered the last part of the threat, choosing the words carefully so that he would be able to extract payment from Draco in virtually any fashion he desired. Draco would pay, but not in the quickest or least painful method. His debts had been building slowly for eleven years, and he would pay the same way.
Arumus allowed his rage, the rage he kept so carefully controlled behind that unassuming formal mask, to burst through the upper layer of his carefully constructed emotional barriers. He kept a tight rein on his emotions because it was necessary to avoid performing magic unintentionally.
Arumus' countenance changed entirely as he channeled a small portion of his anger to control the magical gifts he had inherited through birth. His mischievous exterior melted away to reveal something untamed and slightly frightening. His eyes flashed, icy yet electrifying, seeming to charge the very air around him. His hair shifted in a nonexistent breeze, and he threw his hand out toward Draco.
Draco's eyes widened as he stood, literally frozen, unable to move or even speak. Arumus wasn't old enough to have a wand, though he knew it was only a matter of days until his letter from Hogwarts arrived. He had developed this talent well, and he often had conscious control over the wandless type of magic all wizard children began manifesting at a young age. Most of the time, he could consciously control the things he caused to happen unless his rage was so great that he lost control completely.
"I could take your wand now, Draco," he spoke softly. "I could pay you back now, with your own wand, instead of waiting until I have my own." Arumus gazed into Draco's gray eyes, normally so cold and contemptuous, now filled with terror, and he felt sorry for his cousin. Draco was so depraved he actually believed that his cousin was cruel enough to carry out these threats. At times, Arumus wished he was heartless enough to hurt Draco. But he couldn't often bring himself to damage others, at least not consciously.
Arumus shrugged off the wish and wagged a finger in Draco's frozen face, his voice taking on contempt. Draco would never guess that his contempt was directed inward. "But you see, I think it's too easy that way. You should have a chance, at least. Now, I'll release you if you promise to be civil. Blink once if you agree."
Draco blinked, and a tear squeezed from the corner of his right eye.
Arumus shook his head, feeling disgusted with himself. "Pathetic," he said, turning away as his rage melted away and he reestablished the barriers. He listened to Draco's receding footsteps as he ran down the lawn. Arumus strode through the gates and took one of the overgrown forest tracks that would eventually lead to the nearby village.
He took deep breaths, trying to banish self-loathing by immersing his senses in his familiar refuge. The forest could always calm him, acting as a balm to his pain and soothing his anger away. Arumus didn't know why Draco drew out his rage so effectively. Maybe it was because Draco had parents who weren't in jail and who loved him, because he was so arrogant, because he was so spoiled, or because he had been covertly cursing Arumus ever since he had come home from his first year at Hogwarts.
Draco was so arrogantly sure he could best Arumus, but Arumus had been biding his time all summer, waiting to corner Draco alone. He knew that he only had to frighten Draco badly to stop the constant attacks. Arumus knew he could best his cousin, but he always refrained from causing actual harm. Draco needed to be cut down every so often because he liked bullying others. Anytime Arumus failed to exact a small amount of revenge by scaring Draco witless, Draco became unbearable. When Draco became unbearable, he provoked Arumus to lose his temper, and that always meant that someone would get hurt.
The last time Arumus completely lost control was nearly a year ago. He had injured Draco intentionally, but Aunt Narcissa had jumped into the fray to protect her son, and Arumus had not been able to stop.
