The corridor outside the room Roark and Rododolphus had gone into went completely silent, all eyes swinging immediately to the door as the utter scream of anguish was heard by all. No one could speak, nor could they seem to move as each of them felt that scream in their very souls.
It was Roan who broke the silence by moving on still shaking legs toward the door, only to freeze when it slid open. Roark, his face white, silver eyes full of tears, a hand on the wall. He went to take a step, only to collapse. Roan surged forward to catch him, to take him down to the metal floor, cradling him against him as he broke, his body shuddering with his anguished crying.
Rodolphus appeared then, his sherry eyes holding a look of...well, none of them could say what that look was, for none of them had ever seen it before. Rabastan moved then, Harry immediately behind him, his arms wrapping around his brother, drawing him into him.
"Bas," came his rough whisper as he buried his face in his brother's neck, "how do we survive this?"
"One day at a time," he replied as softly, hands moving up and down his back. "It's going to be the hardest thing either of you has ever had to face, but remember this one thing, you have each other. You have Hunter."
"I don't know if that will be enough,"
"Not right now, it won't, and Harry and I don't want you to worry about Hunter for the next couple of days. We'll take him," a slight smile, one that did not reach his eyes as he drew back to look up into his brother's eyes. "It'll be good practice."
Despite the pain, despite feeling like his heart, his very soul had been yanked out of his chest, his husband's harsh crying sounding in his ears, arched a brow. "Are you going to need it? The practice, I mean?"
"We'll need to have it confirmed, but yes," Harry said quietly as he hugged him tightly, "I think we're going to need it."
"A ray of hope in this dismal day."
He turned away then, squatting down and reaching out to slip his fingers into Roark's hair. Roan looked up, his hands moving slowly over his brother's back as he curled into him. Roark's anguished crying had eased, if only for the moment.
"Come on, babe," he whispered, slipping his arms around him to draw him away from Roan and into his arms, lifting him, "let's go to our quarters."
Roark didn't answer him, he just buried his face in his neck, his arms around his neck, murmuring Evan's name over and over. Without a word to anyone else, he walked away.

The door to his office slid open. Lifting his head from the file spread out over his desk, he was on his feet and moving around the desk. "Rodolphus," he said.
A very slight smile. "Roark" He allowed him to draw him into his arms, and slowly his arms went around the man who was his husband's father. "I need a favor."
Roark drew back, looking up into his eyes. "Anything. All you need to do is ask. Roark?"
Rodolphus shook his head. "He's barely responding. He won't eat, doesn't sleep...He hasn't even asked where Hunter is. We can't stay in those rooms. The memories are just too strong."
"I already have that sorted for you. Omega is seeing to having the rooms cleaned out as we speak as they haven't been used in a long time. It's also bigger than your current quarters, with four bedrooms, a kitchen/dining area, a study big enough for the both of you, and, of course, the main living area. It was being used as a storage area."
Rodolphus nodded. "His files--I think he wanted us to have them, but I know a lot of his work was restricted...confidential."
"His office is sealed. I tried to get into it to remove the sensitive files, but--" he shook his head. "The key wasn't in his uniform."
"As I begin to pack a few things, I'll look for it. Roark, I need to work. Need to take my mind..." he drifted, a look of pain so intense entering his eyes, Roark felt it like a blow to the chest.
"If your sure, you can return to your position whenever you're ready."
"I'm far from ready, but I just can't sit around and do nothing. It leaves me with too much time to think...to wonder if anything different could have been done. There is something I think I need to do."
"I'm almost afraid to ask, but I will. What do you want to do?"
"Malfoy."
Roark went still, then, slowly..."Come sit down, Dolph. Have you eaten anything?"
A shake of his head. "Not hungry."
"You still need to eat. Something light, easy on the stomach. Broth, and maybe some eggs and toast. I remember the mess I was in when I was told Selina was gone..."
Moving to the comm on his desk as his son-in-law took a seat, he called down to the kitchen, ordering up a light meal. Once that was done, he turned back to Rodolphus. "You and Rabastan never did discover who any of his inner circle were, did you?"
"We knew of a few, and those few have been dealt with."
A nod. "Evan found something, shortly after the happening's on Aquaria...and started following the trails...It hasn't been easy...and the proof we needed was well concealed. Evan was slowly unraveling the lines...the links that tied him to Riddle."
"Malfoy?"
"We knew he had someone...someone very high up in our ranks...That's why placing you and Rabastan had to be kept strictly between us in Counter-Intelligence. Dolph, if you want to pick up where Evan was, I'll allow it, but you have to promise me--"
"No unnecessary risks and I WILL be telling Roark. Maybe this will bring him back from the spiral he's in. Something like this...and Riddle's Inner Circle has been an unfinished job for all of us. Did Evan have leads on any others?"
"A few. They'll be in his files. He never told me much of what he was doing unless he had proof he needed to bring it to my attention. When he found Malfoy he kept him to himself until he had unraveled some of the strings."
"Just how long was Evan working for you?"
"I recruited him a couple of centars before I did you and Rabastan. He, like Sirius and Remus, worked completely behind the scenes. Those three were my trackers."
"I see. Did Sirius and Remus know of him?"
"No. Just like he didn't know of them. I kept them apart, working on different trails. Going after people opposite of what the other was working on."
The door pinged. "Enter."
"Did Dac and Gabe know about Evan?" he asked as the door slid open to admit a kitchen staff member with a tray.
Carrying the tray to the desk he set it down. "Will there be anything else, Admiral?"
"No, thank you." As soon as the young man was gone, he looked at Rodolphus as he lifted the lid on the tray, smiling when he heard his son-in-law's stomach rumble suddenly. "Not hungry?"
A chuckle. "I guess I am A little hungry. So, did they?"
"They knew only I had someone else in play, not who. When it came to Riddle, we had to be very careful."
A snort as he took the plate handed to him. "You don't have to tell me," he said as he began to eat. "Is it alright if I tell Bas and Harry?"
"Keep it strictly between the four of you. Once you find the key to Evan's office, his files are yours. Take over his work--Are you sure you can handle it on top of your other responsibilities?"
"Roark...Really?"
Roark chuckled.
