Author's note: Many, many, many apologies for taking so damn long with this chapter *winces* All I can offer as an explanation is that the past months have been either exhausting or shitty or both, which makes working on a light-hearted story as this one fairly difficult to accomplish. I had a hard time getting into the right mindset for this one, but that's no excuse for leaving you hanging for so long. That definitely was not my intention.
I also apologise for the rather short length, but I really wanted to give you guys something after so many weeks of not updating ... I hope you can forgive me. If I don't have any readers for this one left, I'd understand :/ I feel awful for leaving you guys hanging for so long, especially after having received so many reviews for the previous chapter.
Thanks to the following reviewers: Smile317 (Glad you still like it and don't worry, I won't give up on this); Jan
Warnings: Nothing in particular, I think; except for a minor reference to a past character death
I hope you'll like it (despite the short length ...)
Chapter 5
The second Harry arrived back in his quarters, he went straight to his desk to write a letter to Fleur. It wasn't a long one, merely a request to speak to him because he had some questions about the Veela heritage, but it would be enough. He wasn't that close to her, but he thought she would be willing to answer his questions to the best of her abilities.
It wasn't that he didn't trust Malfoy – Draco – not to lie about this when it was something that could be easily researched, but he knew Hermione would scold him if he didn't verify it. Talking about Hermione, should he try Floo calling her and Ron still?
He glanced at the clock and hummed thoughtfully. It wasn't even ten o'clock yet, but if he Floo called them now, there was no way they would stop talking soon, especially not once they heard that Draco was about to court him. That news might actually sent them in a fit and he smiled wryly, folding the letter. Yes, probably best to wait until tomorrow before he would inform them of his news.
As a matter of fact, he was still attempting to wrap his mind around it. It was an odd concept to contemplate, him being Draco's Veela mate. He didn't know that much about Veela to start with, even though Bill was married to one, and he definitely hadn't expected to be a mate of one. But he was and it was going to take a bit of time to get used to that.
Briefly he wondered whether he and Draco were obligated to inform McGonagall about this already, but well, they were only just starting to date, so was there any point to informing her about it already? For all they knew, they both would get on each other's nerves so much despite being mates, that they decided to call it quits. Best to wait until things between them were actually official before they informed the rest of the professors.
"They're probably going to have a collective fit about this," he mumbled, recalling how even now still, some of the professors weren't at ease around the Veela.
"Selene, you mind making a trip for me, girl?" he asked his owl.
After losing Hedwig, it had taken a couple of years before he had felt comfortable buying another owl, having resorted to using one of the school owls until then. The ease of having a personal owl eventually overrode his apprehension and had him going to Diagon Alley to buy a new one. Selene was a jet black owl with pure golden eyes, the complete opposite of Hedwig and that was exactly why Harry had chosen her. No owl would ever be able to fully replace his first friend, but he also didn't want to be constantly reminded of what he had lost if he chose another snow white owl. So Selene had been his choice then.
Selene hooted softly, spreading out his wings as she ruffled her feathers.
"I need you to take this letter to Fleur and wait for her reply," he told her and she hooted again in confirmation, holding out her leg so that he could tie the letter around it.
As soon as he opened the window, she hopped off her wooden stand, spread her wings and flew into the night sky, rising higher and higher until she was nothing but a dark speck against the half full moon. He watched her until he no longer could see her and only then closed the window.
Stretching his arms, he debated for a short moment whether he should pick up a book before shaking his head and going straight to his bedroom. It might not be that late yet, but he needed to be fully rested for the conversation with his friends tomorrow.
No doubt he would need all his energy for that.
"I should have realised it sooner that he's a Veela," Hermione said chagrined and leant back in her chair with a huff, crossing her arms. "All the signs are so obvious in hindsight, I can't believe it took me this long!"
"Granted, it's not like we know many male Veela," Harry said, shrugging. "And even then, why should we have immediately known that he's a Veela?"
"I can't believe you're his mate," Ron said faintly, looking so pale Harry was becoming quite concerned that his friend was about to pass out soon. "You're sure he's not just messing with you? That'd be typical of him, trying to screw with your mind like that."
"No, he sounded very genuine," Harry said thoughtfully and took a sip from his coffee.
He had Flood to his friends' place as soon as he had finished his breakfast, needing to talk it over with them. Selene had returned this morning with Fleur's reply, inviting him to a Floo meeting this afternoon at three. He wasn't certain how much she was willing to divulge, but the fact that she didn't mind talking to him about it was already good enough.
"He might still be lying," Ron said, sounding a tad hopeful, ignoring Hermione's reproachful look.
"Considering he already gave me a gift, he would be going pretty far with his lie then," Harry replied idly, thinking about the stone. "I doubt he would waste money and the effort to get it through my wards if he's just playing a joke or lying to me."
"Wait, so you're going to continue with this?" Ron asked horrified, his eyes widening. "Mate, do you even hear yourself? It's Malfoy!"
"I know who it is," Harry said dryly. "I agreed to give this thing a try. Maybe it works out, maybe it won't; that's something we'll find out soon then. I don't see any harm in trying."
"But what if he tries something?" Ron spluttered, his cheeks steadily becoming redder and redder. "Harry, I know he's a professor now, but that doesn't mean he's completely changed!"
"Professor McGonagall wouldn't have hired him if she wasn't sure about his intentions, Ron," Hermione said, frowning.
He raised an eyebrow at her. "No offense, 'Mione, but she's not infallible. Dumbledore also hired some really questionable people, like Lockhart. Remember him? Guy was that much of an idiot that he managed to curse himself with my broken wand!"
"Okay, fine," she gave in begrudgingly. "But that doesn't mean McGonagall doesn't know how to read people better."
"Look, I'm the one who sees him every day," Harry cut in before it could blow up to an actual argument. "And while he still can be a git at times, he has changed. If he does try something, I'm pretty sure I can handle him, though. I doubt he can be any worse than Voldemort."
Ron frowned, only showing the barest of flinches still at the name. "I hope you know what you're doing, Harry," he muttered darkly.
"I know," Harry said soothingly. "And besides, what can he really try to do to me at school?"
"I seem to recall he did invite Death Eaters into the school that one time," Ron reminded him finely, scowling at him.
"Okay, yes, but we all did horrible things during the war," Harry said and furrowed his eyebrows. "Look, I'm not saying you have to start liking him now. Hell, for all I know, this might not even work out between us anyways. But I'm still going to try and make it work and I would appreciate it if you supported me at least."
It was quiet for a while; Hermione's eyes flitting back and forth between the two men as she gnawed on her lower lip. She was the one to break the silence first.
"I'm not immediately a fan of Malfoy, but I know we can trust Harry to know what he's doing," she said quietly and rested her hand on top of Ron's on the table. "If he wants to try this, we should support him. He's always been a good judge of character, no?"
"Yeah, I guess so," Ron sighed explosively and twisted his hand around to clasp their hands together, running his other one through his hair. "And Harry did turn out to be right about Malfoy in our sixth year, so if you say you trust him enough to try out … dating, then I'll support you, mate."
"Thanks, Ron," Harry smiled gratefully and dared to joke, "Don't worry, I won't tell you everything about what we get up to."
"Eugh, no, thanks," Ron shuddered. "The less I know about him and you, the better off I will be!"
"Don't be such a baby." Hermione clucked her tongue, before winking at Harry. "Feel free to divulge everything you want, Harry. Especially the courting part! I'd really like to know what he is planning!" Her eyes started to glitter with excitement; her studious part taking over once more.
"Yeah," Harry muttered and took another sip of his coffee. "So am I."
"Good afternoon, 'Arry," Fleur greeted in her heavy French accent. She had forgone any makeup today, but it didn't make her any less beautiful, even when her face was slightly distorted by the flames.
"Good afternoon, Fleur," he smiled and settled comfortably down on the floor. "Thanks for wanting to talk to me about this."
"Well, it iz quite a surprise, I'm not going to lie," she admitted. "I didn't expect Mister Malfoy to be a Veela too."
"Yeah, I didn't expect it either," he said ruefully. "I just want to confirm a couple of things he told me about yesterday, if you don't mind."
"Sure, I can try to help," she said easily. "No Veela iz the same, 'owever."
"I know. I was just wondering … He told me that only mates can see a Veela's wings. Is that true?" He still had a bit of a hard time believing that nobody could see those giant wings, but then again if they could, why had nobody else remarked on it during that time on the Quidditch Pitch?
He supposed the wings could have disappeared too quickly for anyone else to notice, but …
"That iz true, yes," she confirmed and her hand briefly appeared to stroke some strands of hair out of her face. "Only our mate iz allowed to witness our wings, nobody else. It iz a way to locate our mate, you zee. Finding our mate can be really difficult, so that iz one of the ways that makes it easier for us."
"Right, I guess that makes sense," he muttered, nodding to himself.
Considering how many people lusted after Veela because of their beauty, it was logical that nature had come up with a fail-safe to ensure that nobody could try to trick a Veela into thinking they were their mate.
"So the whole noticing the eyes changing – that's also something only a mate can do," he commented, though he still didn't see any point in that. Why would it impress him that Draco was capable of changing his eye colour?
"Yes, it makes the Veela and their mate more …" she trailed off, floundering a bit as she tried to find the appropriate word. "Attuned to each other. Veela can sense their mate's feelings, so in return the mate can - "
"Hold up, what do you mean, the Veela can sense their mate's feelings?" he asked, a tad alarmed. "You mean he's going to constantly know how I feel?" He wasn't sure whether he really liked that idea, of Draco constantly knowing how he felt, what he felt.
"No, not constantly!" she immediately denied, her eyes widening a notch. "I'm not explaining myself well," she said chagrined and was silent for a moment.
"Some of the time then?" Harry guessed, though that still didn't sound that appealing.
"It iz more like – like we're really attuned, that you don't need words to know how the other one feels," she said slowly and a hint of frustration shone through when she said, "I'm sorry, it iz really hard to explain, because it iz instinctive to me. It iz knowing each other so well that you can read each other immediately."
"But we don't know each other that well – or at least not in a positive way," he quickly amended, because years of rivalry had taught him a fair bit about Draco as a person. "Does that mean that he won't be able to, well, sense my feelings at the start?"
She tilted her head to the left. "I suppose," she replied contemplatively. "The sensing does not work with timestamps, 'Arry. It iz something we can do when we know each other well. And you know, the Veela iz not the only one who can do it. You will be able to do it too, sense 'im, I mean."
"With the eyes' part then, I guess," he mumbled, his eyebrows drawn together.
"Partly," she confirmed. "But in other ways too, you'll zee."
Well, as long as Draco wouldn't literally be able to sense his feelings … He supposed it would be more like couples knowing each other so well that they could guess how the other one was feeling.
"And that he managed to send me a gift through my heavy wards – that's normal too?" Not that he was particularly worried that Draco would try to tear down his wards or try to get something malicious through – if he did, that would be the last thing he would ever do – but it still seemed strange that even the strongest wards weren't capable of keeping out gifts from a Veela.
That kind of defeated the point in having wards set up in the first place.
"Yes, the mate bond between you two allows 'im to bypass any wards," she said. "That iz partly because of our protective nature, you zee. If someone ever tried to hurt our mate and keep the mate behind wards, then we would still be able to find them and get them back. No ward can 'old us away from our mate."
"That is actually kind of amazing, not going to lie," he said impressed. Not that he still encountered a lot of enemies when he spent most of his time at Hogwarts nowadays, but it was still interesting to know that in the event that he somehow did get abducted Draco would be able to find him.
If they remained together, of course.
"I know this might be a very confusing time for you, 'Arry, but he wouldn't lie about this," she stated, staring at him. "We Veela take our courtship, our mate, very seriously. We do not joke about something as serious as thiz. We cannot joke about this. If you can zee his wings, if you can zee his eyes change, if he can reach you through your wards – you're his mate, no doubt about that."
He bit down on his lip, hesitating to ask his next question. "Is it true that I can reject being his mate without something really bad happening to him? Like say, he won't die or so?" He winced when he saw her face momentarily twitching with pain, a grimace distorting her face.
"No, he won't die – it will just hurt for a really, really long time," she answered honestly. "We are not some tragic being, 'Arry. We're not a slave to our Veela, we 'ave full autonomy over ourselves. But that does not mean that being rejected by our mate won't hurt us. It will hurt a lot, but we will survive."
She sighed softly. "I know a bit about your 'istory from the others. Your beginning will not be eazy, it might be a lot harder than how it was between Bill and I. I cannot tell you what to do, but I do ask that you take this seriously, 'Arry. Do not give him false hope, because that iz worse than outright rejecting him. If you want to try, you have to try because you want to, not because you feel forced."
"Yeah, that's what he told me as well," he muttered and looked away for a moment. While he could admit that he still thought the idea of him being Draco's mate was odd, he wasn't entering this dating part out of pity either. That would be an insult to the both of them.
It was good to hear, however, that Draco really wouldn't die if Harry ended up rejecting him. The last thing he wanted, was for someone to die because of something he had said or done.
"I don't know 'im," she said; her voice carrying a vague apologising note. "I don't know whether you two will work out or not with the kind of 'istory you two 'ave. I cannot promise a 'appy ending, but I can assure you that he iz sincere when he tells you you're his mate."
"Yeah, I know, he sounded sincere," he sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "I believe what he told me, I just wanted – to be sure, I guess. You're the only other Veela I know, so …"
"It iz okay, I don't mind!" she exclaimed. "It iz a good thing that you ask these questions, because to me that sounds like you are very sincere about this, which iz good. If you 'ave other questions, ones you think you cannot ask 'im, you can always talk to me, I do not mind."
"Thanks, Fleur, you really helped me out here," he smiled gratefully and wrinkled his nose then. "And sorry for taking up your time. I'm sure you and Bill had better things planned than discussing Veela with me."
"It iz no problem," she insisted. "I'm 'appy I can help you. I 'ope you and Mister Malfoy can make things work."
"Yeah, I guess we'll find that out soon," he smiled, feeling cautiously optimistic.
They had already proven that they could work together as colleagues – how much more difficult could it be to make dating work out?
When he woke up the next morning, ready to tackle a fresh week of classes, a single pure red carnation greeted him on his nightstand.
